Let’s agree—menopause is no joke. After decades of dealing with a regular period and the cramps, mood swings, and pain that come with it, people with uteruses also have to endure the hot flashes, irritability, lack of sleep, and even the potential depression that comes with menopause.

This event, which marks your body’s final menstrual period and usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, causes a significant change in people’s hormones. Because of this, it can easily lead to weight gain and/or a more difficult time losing weight. Not only that but the time before menopause, known as perimenopause, is also known to contribute to unwanted weight gain as well.

To help with this experience, Mary Claire Haver, MD created the Galveston Diet for those who want to stop weight gain before menopause. This diet is a way of eating that includes plenty of whole foods and is focused on reducing inflammation.

Read on to learn more about how this eating pattern may help prevent weight gain before menopause, and for more healthy eating tips check out The #1 Best Supplement for Women Over 50.

What is the Galveston Diet?

Shutterstock

The main purpose of the Galveston Diet is to help people in perimenopause manage their weight and avoid the common occurrence of weight gain associated with this stage. But more than just focusing on weight management, the Galveston Diet is also intended to help regulate hormones and improve symptoms associated with menopause.

The diet is structured around three pillars: anti-inflammatory foods, intermittent fasting, and what is known as a “fuel refocus,” which means limiting your consumption of refined carbs and focusing more on nutrient-dense carbohydrates.

“This diet encourages eating foods low in carbohydrates, lean protein, healthy fats, and a select group of low starch produce,” says Trista Best, MPH, RD, LD at Balance One Supplements, “as well as integrating three supplements: vitamin D, fiber, and omega-3 fatty acids.”

Aside from the element of intermittent fasting, this eating pattern most closely resembles the popular Mediterranean Diet, which pulls inspiration from places like Italy, Greece, Spain, and France.

How the Galveston Diet may help you avoid weight gain.

This is a fairly new diet, so there isn’t much research to be found on it. To learn more about the possible benefits, we asked a few of our expert dietitians to weigh in.

Overall, dietitians agree that eating anti-inflammatory foods is a good step towards preventing weight gain before menopause.

“Data shows a link between chronic inflammation and weight gain, so eating anti-inflammatory foods is a great practice when trying to avoid weight gain, regardless of which stage of the life cycle you are in,” says Lauren Manaker, MS, RDN, author of The First Time Mom’s Pregnancy Cookbook and Fueling Male Fertility, and registered dietitian on our medical expert board.

The “fuel refocus” part of the diet—eating more whole foods and limiting your consumption of processed foods—can also help you manage your weight at this life stage.

“Limiting foods that are pro-inflammatory, which includes many ultra-processed foods, can help people manage their inflammation and potentially help them lose weight” says Manaker.

RELATED: 4 Best Eating Habits to Reduce Inflammation and Slow Aging

The intermittent fasting pillar of the diet may not be for you.

While eating anti-inflammatory foods and limiting your consumption of pro-inflammatory foods is helpful to most, some dietitians warn that intermittent fasting isn’t for everyone.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

“To be honest, there is nothing magical about intermittent fasting that will promote health and weight loss in this population so I’d skip that part,” says Lisa Young, Ph.D., RDN, author of Finally Full, Finally Slim and member of our medical expert advisory board. “Limiting late-night eating is a great idea, but limiting your eating window can possibly set you up for a cycle of restriction and then overeating.”

Should you try the Galveston Diet?

Most information you can find about the diet is from books and online subscription resources. For specific information about the diet, you can purchase Dr. Haver’s book, The Galveston Diet: The Doctor-Developed, Patient-Proven Plan to Burn Fat and Tame Your Hormonal Symptoms.

For more structured guidance, you can access the official Galveston Diet program online, which is offered in three levels: signature ($59), Gold ($99), and Platinum ($229), each with varying degrees of information provided.

While there is some research that supports the Galveston Diet’s method of preventing weight gain before menopause, because the diet is relatively new there is currently no concrete evidence besides customer testimonials to verify its success. Our dietitians are supportive of two of the three pillars—eating anti-inflammatory foods and the “fuel refocus”—but do not recommend intermittent fasting.

If you want to learn more, talk with your doctor or dietitian about how something like the Galveston Diet may affect you and your health goals.

Doctors and dieticians across the globe advise individuals aiming to lose weight to integrate at least 20 to 30 minutes of walking every day. But before building a daily walking regime, one must be aware of the direct and indirect walking-related mistakes most commonly made by individuals. Not only will it help one correct their pre-existing flaws, but it will also help prevent the possible mistakes they might make down the line.

The most common walking mistakes usually occur due to improper postures, such as slouching, leaning forwards or backwards for more than 5 degrees, and deliberate arching of the pelvis and back. These often lead to fat stored in the lower abdominal region, making it much harder to burn off while walking. Adding to this, improper sleeping habits, unhealthy diets and extreme anxiety often fiddle with one’s hormones and adrenaline levels which often inhibit efficient weight and fat loss.

These mistakes appear grave, however, correcting and preventing them is unbelievably simple. One must maintain a proper walking posture and be aware of mind and body coordination while walking. Additionally, it is essential to be mindful of which muscles to engage in gaining the maximum weight loss results healthily. It is advisable for individuals who suffer from obesity to consult a doctor or dietician before trying out an intense walking routine or making sudden changes to their diets.

Common Walking Mistakes That Hamper Weight Loss

Before we look into ways to prevent and correct the commonly occurring walking mistakes we make that hinder our weight loss, it is vital to be aware of what causes them in the first place. While most of these walking mistakes often result from mindless walking where individuals are often unaware of their posture and bodily clues, other external reasons are also responsible. Some examples are uncomfortable clothing and footwear, unhealthy eating habits and an unhealthy sleeping and eating schedule often impede one’s walking efficiency and the results obtained from it.

Over-Straining Yourself

Too much of anything is wrong; similarly, too much walking can be counterproductive instead of assisting good health and weight loss. When one overstrains themselves, it leads to muscle injuries such as cramps and muscle pulls, followed by joint problems.

Therefore, one must maintain moderation according to fitness levels and activity thresholds to prevent unnecessary straining. When one strains themselves, it sometimes leads to weight gain instead of weight loss as the body starts storing the excess calories in the form of fat instead of burning them up. It is to ensure the proper functioning of all the organs within our bodies.

Bad Posture

Bad posture is another one of the most common walking mistakes individuals make while walking. Research shows that leaning forward excessively (anything more than 5 degrees) or arching your back backwards the whole time leads to many spinal cord-related issues later on.

In addition, constant arching or straining of the back leads to a fat cushion forming in one’s lower abdomen, which leads to a belly pooch even though you might be following an intense walking regime.

Unnecessarily Long Strides

In an attempt to increase their walking speeds, individuals often acquire the habit of taking unnecessarily long strides, which is also called overstriding.

Overstriding is bad for one’s walking posture and ankles and knee joints. It is important to note that when one overstrides, their core and thigh muscles are not activated properly, preventing the body from burning the fat in the targeted areas; it just makes you sweat.

Not only does it make one lean forward abruptly to maintain their balance during overstriding, but it also increases the risks of shin, ankle and knee injuries, as shown by studies. Injuries not only will put off your ongoing walking routine but will also reduce your efficiency and speed.

Faulty Footwear

Using faulty footwear is probably the primary cause of most walking-related issues, especially in individuals who suffer from obesity. Not all the fancy footwear sold in the stores are suitable for walking.

The walking shoes one chooses should ensure that the body weight gets spread evenly across the feet, which reduces the chances of injuries and increases agility. It is essential to realise that gymming and running footwear differ considerably from the sports footwear needed for firm and brisk walking.

Additionally, wearing shoes either too big or too small also leads to muscle injuries due to undue strain. Therefore, one must change their footwear after every year or two to ensure maximum safety from any muscle injuries.

Dehydration

Research shows that lack of proper hydration leads to a drop in the electrolyte and blood sugar levels inside our bodies which often leads to drowsiness, fatigue and lightheadedness during a prolonged workout.

It reduces one’s stamina and hinders proper muscle functioning, leading to an ineffective workout. Lower blood sugar levels will only make the body store up the calories so it can continue functioning properly.

Improper Arm Movement

Weight loss does not only mean one needs to tone down and strengthen their core. One must also ensure proper strengthening and toning down of the arm muscles.

Free and appropriate arm movement during walking is vital to maintain balance and equilibrium with other body parts. Arm movements also help one in determining their gait and speed of motion.

If one moves their arms either too fast or too slow, it will naturally lead to the rest of our bodies trying to cope with either extreme, which leads to postural problems during walking such as slouching, bending, or leaning too far back.

Walking Mistakes for Weight Loss: Preventing and Correcting Them

It is unbelievably simple to prevent and correct most walking mistakes for weight loss.

All one needs is to be more mindful during walking and make fundamental changes in their daily walking routines and diet. One must be fully aware and in sync with all the cues and signals given by the body during their regular walking regime.

Mistake 1: Over-Straining

Like any other exercise, it is easy to overdo walking and strain one’s muscles in the intense exercise regime. Overstraining occurs when your body does not get enough time to heal and rebuild the muscles and bones, which leads to them wearing out quicker. Hence it is imperative to let our bodies rest for a sufficient amount of time and not try to push them too far beyond their limits.

Therefore, one must practice moderation and consistency in walking instead of overdoing it to achieve quick results. In this way, the body stores the good fat and uses it to burn out the unwanted fat much more efficiently than when it is overworked.

Mistake 2: Bad Posture

You can correct bad posture by practising walking in front of a full-length mirror for a few minutes every day. One must stand straight but with their shoulders relaxed.

The chin should be up and parallel to the ground, in a confident stance with proper engagement of the core muscles, where most fat accumulates. The back and the spinal cord should have a natural curve without external bending or arching.

Individuals with an anterior pelvic tilt can consult their general physicians to practice certain yoga and stretching poses which help correct unnatural back arching or slouching.

Not only will this help strengthen one’s core and lower tummy muscles, but it also burns a considerable amount of body fats, assisting weight loss.

Mistake 3: Unnecessarily Long Strides

While walking, it is vital to have one’s weight distributed evenly on both feet. Using the back leg to help propel our body forward is the best way to conserve energy and minimise injuries.

Getting a firm push with each step helps the body move forward in a more streamlined manner. If one wants to increase their walking speed, the focus must be on taking shorter but quicker steps rather than forcing one’s legs to go farther than their stepping span.

It helps engage one’s thigh and calf muscles more and leads to a loss in thigh fat and any help in toning them down leading to weight loss.

Different footwear brands might have different sizing charts. It is thus necessary to get your foot size measured at each store. There are shoes dedicated specifically for walking to provide maximum comfort and support.

So one must buy shoes of the correct size and fit, have enough cushion, and enable the natural flow of motion by evenly distributing the body’s weight.

In addition, the shoes must be lightweight, cushioned well, flexible, and changed yearly to ensure maximum feet safety. While footwear does not directly link to weight loss, it helps distribute one’s weight evenly across the feet while walking, making us more mobile.

Mistake 5: Dehydration

The best way to prevent dehydration is to drink water throughout the day at regular intervals. It is better to avoid caffeinated drinks before the walk as they often make dehydration worse. One might instead go for a basic salt sugar water-electrolyte drink at least two hours before going for their daily walk.

Research shows that this not only helps flush out toxins inside the body before the workout, which assists in weight loss but also ensures a stable glucose and electrolyte level in one’s body throughout the duration of the walk. In addition, it is crucial to carry a water bottle during the walk to make it easier to rehydrate when required.

Mistake 6: Improper Arm Movement

You can correct arm movements like body posture by practising in front of the mirror for a few minutes daily. Your arms must be parallel and move back and forth in a relaxed but structured manner. They should not converge or sway outwards as it leads to improper balance. Proper arm movement also helps regulate one’s walking speed properly and maintain synchronisation among mind and body while walking, which helps in reducing arm fat and toning down the arms.

Mistake 7: Unhealthy Eating Habits

One must make conscious and well-informed decisions on the type and quantity of food they consume to correct unhealthy eating habits. It is essential to avoid junk food, fast food, foods rich in artificial synthetics and preservatives, and sugary foods and drinks. Walking in itself will not help us lose weight. Thus, eating wholesome and healthy meals throughout the day will help nourish our bodies.

Consuming whole grains and pulses, fresh fruits and vegetables, and healthy fats such as tofu, olives, dates, mangoes, and fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids support overall development of one’s body. It not only helps the muscles and bones to grow and heal quickly but also increases one’s stamina and energy.

The HealthifyMe Note:

A few common walking mistakes include improper arm movements, eating unhealthy foods, dehydration, faulty footwear, unnecessary long strides, bad posture, and over-straining. Correcting these mistakes will aid in weight loss.

Summary

Walking mistakes individuals make while aiming for weight loss are more common than one can imagine. Unfortunately, most individuals do not even realise some of the walking mistakes they make.

Most of these mistakes are due to improper postures, such as excessive slouching and leaning forward or excessive back arching. A few more gait and posture-related issues are improper arm movements and unnecessarily large steps.

There are some external factors such as not wearing shoes which fit well or shoes which are not suitable for walking, being dehydrated and parched, improper sleep schedules, and unhealthy eating habits. However, it is unbelievably easy to fix these common walking mistakes.

All one needs to do is be aware of their postures which you can do by using full-length mirrors for practice. Being more mindful of one’s gait and staying well hydrated and well-nourished ensure proper walking techniques and prevent fatigue and muscle and joint injuries.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q. Why is walking not helping me lose weight?

A. Some reasons which prevent one from losing weight even after walking regularly might be lack of sleep, improper diet, not sipping on enough water, and overexerting oneself. All these reasons cause one’s metabolic rate to slow down and prevent calories from being burnt, leading to no apparent weight loss.

Q.What are the wrong ways of walking?

A. Some of the wrong ways of walking are overstriding, meaning that your strides are longer than your comfort limit, causing your posture to bend. Swinging your arms excessively and improper postures such as hunching or leaning too much are wrong.

Q. Can walking too much cause weight loss?

A. Studies show that just like any exercise, walking too much will lead you to gain weight instead of losing it because over-exercising messes up your hormones and adrenaline levels. In addition, the excess fatigue prevents your body from healing and growing properly and leads to the excess calories being stored inside for survival and natural bodily function.

Q. How soon will I see results from walking?

A. Within just a week of walking, one will feel visibly fitter and more agile as compared to their earlier state and will also find their endurance slowly building. However, for visible signs of fat loss and muscle definition, one might have to wait for at least 7 to 8 weeks.

Q. Does walking reduce the tummy?

A. According to various studies, it is recommended that one must integrate at least 20 to 30 minutes of walking per day to enable the body to properly work up all the muscles and joints and burn up the excess calories stored. It leads to a reduction in tummy fat. However, just walking is not sufficient; one must also keep track of their diet and calorie intake.

Q. Can I correct the way I walk?

A. It is pretty simple to correct how an individual walks even if they have potentially harmful walking postures. First, one can start by being aware of their gait by looking down while walking. Next is to walk in front of a full-length mirror which enables one to study their posture and fix them accordingly. And finally, one must take note of overstriding, which is often one of the leading causes of incorrect walking styles.

Q. Can you overdo walking?

A. It is possible to overdo walking just as with any other exercise. One must remember that every individual has a different tolerance to the number of steps they can walk per day without overstraining themselves. Excessive walking can increase the risk of joint injuries and muscle pulls and tears.

Q. What is the best time to walk to lose weight?

A. There is no specific ideal time to walk to aid weight loss. However, one must remember that early mornings are when the body is usually the most well-rested and alert, leading to a more mindful exercise that aids weight loss. Also, later during the day, fatigue slowly starts to set in, making it more difficult to put our minds entirely toward walking.

Q. Can walking reduce thigh fat?

A. Walking is one of the best ways to reduce thigh fat. It stretches out and works up all the muscles in the thigh and calf regions which in turn strengthen those muscles and help burn up all the excess fat in the thighs. One must integrate at least 20 to 30 minutes of walking every day.

Weight Loss Foods

Eating right has a key role to play in one’s weight loss aspirations. It is important to consume foods that are low on calories and rich in nutrients in order to achieve your goals. The following weight-loss foods can help in better weight management and reduce obesity.

1. Eggs

Eggs have gained a reputation for being one of the healthiest diet foods for weight loss. They contain a high amount of healthy protein and fats. Although they were notorious for increasing cholesterol, it has been proven that the correct amount of eggs in the diet promotes weight loss.

Studies show that including eggs in a weight management diet may offer a nutritious supplement to enhance weight loss. Having eggs for breakfast also leaves you feeling more satisfied, thus helping prevent overeating.

2. Green-leafy vegetables

According to studies, leafy vegetables like spinach, drumstick leaves, fenugreek and mustard leaves are incredibly efficient in promoting weight loss.

Being low in calories and high in fibre, these foods provide a feeling of fullness. They are packed with antioxidants and essential minerals which are very healthy in the long run.

3. Chicken Breast

Although meat is high in calories, chicken breast is packed with healthy protein and fats. It is one of the best foods for weight loss. As it is a slice of lean meat, it can help you cut out the need for excess carbohydrates in your food. Research shows that increased protein intake helps promote weight loss in an efficient manner by helping maintain your muscle mass and boosting your metabolic health.

4. Fish

Fish, when cooked correctly, can be an extremely efficient food to eat for weight loss. It is high in omega-3 fatty acids and is packed with protein and healthy nutrients. Fish can be cooked in a number of ways and is an ideal lean protein to consume for weight loss. It can also provide good amounts of iodine. Read this article to know how fish oil may spur weight loss.

5. Cruciferous vegetables

Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, brussels sprouts and cauliflower have a combination of protein, fibre and low energy density, making them an ideal food for weight loss. Research shows that broccoli juice reduces weight by supporting and boosting bodily functions like insulin sensitivity and good bacteria modulation. Cauliflower, which is especially popular in Indian food, can be used in many recipes and is one of the best Indian foods for weight loss.

6. Nuts

Healthy nuts like almonds, walnuts, peanuts and pistachios are packed with healthy omega-3 fats and are also high in protein. Snacking on nuts during the day and in between meals is a healthy way to promote weight loss. Nuts are also filling and can keep you satiated in between meals.

Additionally, protein reduces the level of Ghrelin- the hunger hormone and increases the production of Peptide YY – the hormone responsible for making you feel full.

7. Fruits

Fruits like apples, pears, papaya, bananas and oranges have proven to be the best foods for weight loss. As they are packed with nutrients and essential vitamins, they are known to be very healthy, in addition to being tasty. Having a bowl of fruit during the day can promote weight loss and keep you healthy. Know more about the 10 best fruits for weight loss.

8. Whole grains

Substituting your carbohydrates with whole grains is a sure-fire way to boost your weight loss. Whole grains like oats, quinoa and brown rice are very healthy alternatives to white rice and refined wheat, as stated in this research. They are packed with fibre, and healthy amounts of protein and are one of the most popular diet foods.

9. Legumes

We often hear our parents and adults saying that legumes like beans and lentils are good for health and this study proves this, specifically in terms of weight management. Black beans and kidney beans can be used in numerous Indian recipes and are great for weight loss. Being high in protein and fibre, they can keep you full for hours.

10. Soups

Soups are a very healthy way to start a meal. Home-cooked soup can include plenty of vegetables and lentils. These provide plenty of nutrients as well as health benefits. It has been observed in studies that having a small bowl of soup before your meal will provide you with the right nutrients to keep you full and prevent you from overeating. Here’s a magic soup that guarantees weight loss.

Foods to Avoid for Weight Loss

Consuming certain kinds of food can lead to unnecessary weight gain. It is ideal to avoid foods that have too many calories and can be harmful to one’s health. Here’s a list of foods that one must avoid in their weight loss journey.

1. Sweetened drinks

Most of the aerated beverages available in the market have been doused with sugars and preservatives. Sugar has no nutritional value and is added only for taste. Liquid calories also increase your appetite, making you consume more food than usual. This study proves the aforementioned claims about the relation between sugary drinks and weight gain. Cut out sweetened beverages from your diet and drink plenty of water to see proper weight loss results.

2. Processed foods

Avoid eating processed foods like biscuits, chips, pastries, candies, ice cream and other quick snacks. These processed foods are packed with preservatives, refined flour and unhealthy ingredients. There’s documented evidence that links processed foods and obesity. Choose to eat healthy snacks like fruits and nuts as alternatives. Processed foods have an undesirable amount of sodium present in them and high sodium intake leads to an elevated risk of obesity.

3. Refined flour

Refined flour or maida lacks nutritional value. As it has been subjected to a heavy manufacturing process, it loses its health benefits and is packed with empty calories. Research indicates that the degree of food processing has an effect on its consumer’s body weight. It has been known to cause health problems when consumed in excess. Another research has proven that heavily processed foods cause overeating and subsequent weight gain. Choose healthier options like whole wheat flour or healthy grains instead of refined flour.

4. Junk foods

Although junk food is delicious, it only has that taste due to the number of artificial ingredients added to it. Junk food contains large amounts of fats, sugar, salt and carbohydrates and negligible to no minerals and vitamins that cause weight gain. In addition, you tend to eat more junk food because even large amounts can keep you unsatiated. It leads to binge eating and becomes another cause of abnormal weight gain. Junk food uses artificial colour and flavouring and is known to increase cholesterol substantially. Cut out junk food from your diet to see a significant weight loss.

5. Chocolates and candies

Chocolates and candies are known to be packed with sugars and other sweetening agents. Excessive consumption of chocolates and candies can lead to increased blood sugar and diabetes in the long run. A healthier alternative is to consume pure dark chocolate, as it is known to not have sugars and is also significantly lower in calories. Consuming a small piece of dark chocolate a day has been known to be good for heart health.

6. Alcohol

The fallouts of alcohol consumption are exponentially high as proven by studies. One way alcohol negatively impacts your body is by increasing the risk of abdominal obesity. Beer, in particular, is filled with carbohydrates and is known to cause an increase in weight over time. Alcohol consumption causes greater hunger and less satiety further pushing one to make poor food choices.

It further causes stress on the stomach and the intestines. This leads to a decrease in digestive secretions through the tract which is essential for healthy digestion. Alcohol intake of all levels can lead to impaired digestion and absorption of these nutrients. This can greatly affect the metabolism of organs that play a role in weight management. Interestingly, most people consume lots of snacks when they are drinking. Combining fatty and processed foods with alcohol can lead to a significant increase in weight. Most people add some aerated or sugary beverage with their drink, which can unknowingly lead them to consume much more calories than needed.

7. Breakfast cereals

Although most breakfast cereals have been advertised as a healthy and nutritious way to start the day, academic probes have proven that they are not as healthy as one may expect. These cereals undergo a multi-step manufacturing method and lose a majority of their nutritional value in the process. They are also filled with added sugars and artificial flavours to appeal to the masses, kids in particular. Foods that are advertised as ‘fat-free’ are also filled with artificial sweeteners to make up for the lost taste. Choose to eat healthy and fresh home-cooked food for breakfast to start your day on the right note.

Diet plan for weight loss

There are two types of people in the world: those who go to bed thinking about what they’re going to eat for breakfast, and those who don’t. And for those breakfast-lovers out there, they know that what they choose to eat can either make or break their morning.

If you’re a breakfast lover who is also trying to lose weight or stick to a similar type of health goal, finding healthy breakfast food that you can still get excited about can sometimes be a challenge.

The key to choosing breakfast foods to lose weight, especially around your abdominal area, is making sure you get enough protein. For example, a great way to start your day is with some eggs and avocado on whole-grain toast, or Greek yogurt with berries and nut butter.

But what about certain foods that you should avoid if you’re trying to lose belly fat? According to Trista Best, MPH, RD, LD at Balance One Supplements, one breakfast food that you may want to limit or avoid when trying to lose abdominal fat are breakfast pastries.

Continue reading to learn more about how refined carbs like breakfast pastries can derail your weight loss goals, and for more healthy eating tips, check out Best Eating Habits to Shrink Belly Fat.

Why you should avoid breakfast pastries if you want to lose belly fat.

Shutterstock

“Breakfast pastries like processed and pre-packaged toaster pastries, donuts, and even some meal replacement bars can be stalling your weight loss efforts, especially because weight gain around the belly is easily exacerbated by a diet containing refined carbohydrates and sugar,” says Best.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

While eating a decadent, fluffy pastry in the morning can be satisfying in the moment, Best warns that there really isn’t much nutritional value to them at all, which may be detrimental to your health goals over time.

“These pastries are calorie-dense and loaded with ingredients that will lead to inflammation, glucose spikes, and subsequent crashes, as well as only temporary relief from hunger,” says Best, “and this may lead to overeating on other foods soon after consuming breakfast pastries with little to no valuable nutrients.”

Best also points out that eating foods that are low in nutritional value, especially in the morning hours, can “leave you feeling hungry and fatigued throughout the rest of the day.”

The link between refined carbs and belly fat

While refined carbohydrates like breakfast pastries can have an immediate impact on your glucose levels and energy, they can also contribute to more belly fat over time if consumed on a regular basis.

For example, one study recently published in The Journal of Nutrition found a connection between regular consumption of refined carbohydrates and more weight around the abdominal area. This same study also found that replacing refined carbohydrates with whole grains could help improve abdominal weight gain, as well as lower your risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Takeaway

You certainly don’t have to avoid breakfast pastries forever, especially if eating them brings you joy in the morning. However, Best suggests making some adjustments in how you consume them.

“Breakfast pastries should be limited to occasional consumption and replaced with nutrient-dense foods that will fuel your body and set you up for success,” she says.

On the mornings when you do treat yourself to a muffin or a donut, try pairing it with a healthy breakfast food with plenty of lean protein like eggs or low-sugar Greek yogurt.

It happened.

Your spouse cheated, and now it’s decision time.

Should you leave?

Is reconciliation after an affair possible?

Ultimately, it depends on the couple and their situation.

How long have you been married?

Was your spouse in their right mind at the time of the incident?

Is infidelity a recurring issue in your relationship?

If, after answering those questions, you choose to stay together, navigating the marriage reconciliation process must be done with great care.

To that end, today, we’re exploring 10+ common marriage reconciliation mistakes to avoid.

What Should You Not Do After Infidelity?

After a cheating incident, don’t make a rash decision — especially if you’re married, have kids, or shared assets! Even if you once agreed that cheating was a deal-breaker, slow your roll.

People make mistakes — big and small. Your partner may be exceptionally and genuinely remorseful.

Yes, your spouse made a horrible, rotten, terrible, no-good, hurtful decision, but relationships contain multitudes.

In the aftermath of infidelity, also consider the following:

Indulge in Self-Care: Be kind to yourself. Pamper yourself. It will relieve the inevitable stress.

Assumption Junction Doesn’t Have a Function: Don’t assume the incident has anything to do with love.

Go Ahead and Grieve: Allow yourself to grieve.

Avoid the Self-Blame Game: Don’t blame yourself.

10 Common Reconciliation Mistakes To Avoid After Infidelity + a Critical Bonus Suggestion

You’ve decided to give the relationship another shot. Now what?

Couples take different tacks, but there are ten (plus) common mistakes to avoid after infidelity — and we threw in a bonus one for good luck.

1. Don’t Ask Too Many Questions

Do you really need to know where the affair occurred or the quality of the sex? Questions of this nature do not need to be discussed. It’s just a form of torture, and there’s no satisfactory answer anyway.

The bottom line is that your partner cheated. Yes, you should probably uncover a few broad-stroke issues — which we’ll get to below — but you don’t need a play-by-play. It doesn’t serve your mental health.

2. Don’t Ask Too Few Questions

Asking too many questions is a problem — so is asking too few. It’s essential to know how long the affair has been going on. The answer to that question will inform the best path to reconciliation — if there is one.

Determining your partner’s feelings for the other party is also a must. Are they in love, or was it really just a one-night stand that happened in a drunken stupor?

3. Refrain From Taking Revenge

“Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves,” said Confucius. In other words: seeking revenge can blow up and harm you in the end.

Infidelity-related revenge can be messy to the point of danger because emotions are piqued, and people can easily slip into psychotic breaks, resulting in catastrophic outcomes.

Instead, follow the other famous quote about payback: living well is the best revenge.

4. Don’t Let It Go if You’re Not Ready

Don’t let your partner force you into a timeline. Sure, if it’s been over three years and attempts at reconciliation keep failing, it may be time to pack up the relationship. Otherwise, getting over betrayal takes time. You cannot be expected to snap out of it in a matter of days.

5. Though Difficult, Don’t Let Paranoia Rule

Extreme paranoia often rears its head in the aftermath of infidelity. Understandably, the cheated person becomes obsessed with their partner’s whereabouts and contacts. But while it’s to be expected, it’s not healthy in any way, shape, or form. Obsessing increases stress, which has physical consequences.

Not giving in to paranoia may be one of the most challenging aspects of working through an affair, and it’s also one of the most important.

6. Don’t Involve the Children

This one is common sense: don’t involve young kids.

They don’t need to know the intimate details of your marriage. It’s simply not appropriate — especially if they’re young. Sure, if your kids are in their 20s or older, and you need to explain some familial tensions or decisions, then have at it.

But even then, think long and hard about including them in your bedroom matters. No rule says you must share everything with everyone — not even your offspring.

7. Don’t Dole Out Emotional Attacks

Yes, your partner stuck a proverbial dagger in your back — and it hurts tremendously. And yes, you have every right to shout and scream upon learning of the news. But once the initial shock and trauma pass, refrain from doling out emotional attacks. All that does is reopen wounds and keep the infidelity alive.

Plus, emotional attacks are catastrophic on our mental health. While you may have a burning desire to torment your spouse for stepping out, remember that their state of mind can affect your sanity, too!

8. Don’t Refuse To Seek Help

Reconciling a marriage after a bout of infidelity is no easy task — and professional, outside help is almost always needed. Couples counselors know how to put your Humpty Dumpty marriage back together again. Moreover, therapy provides a safe space for communication where everyone can express their emotions in a controlled environment.

Counseling, however, can be expensive. Many people — even middle-class folks — cannot afford it, which is why there are public psychological services. You may be surprised at the number of lower-cost therapy options available. Online counseling is also becoming popular and can cost a lot less.

9. Don’t Involve Casual Friends and Coworkers

Jane from accounting may be a good lunch partner and fellow “Love Is Blind” enthusiast. But Jane from accounting doesn’t need to know that your spouse cheated. Neither does your least-annoying neighbor with whom you spend the most time at the community summer barbecue.

However, It’s always acceptable to confide in your hairdresser or manicurist. That’s just the way of the world.

But seriously, smearing your spouse around town will only make things worse — which, again, could boomerang back and clobber your mental health.

10. Keep It Off Social Media

For the love of Saint Betty White, do not put your business in the social media streets! It’s a colossal mistake. For starters, although it may feel fantastic in the heat of the moment to blast your cheating spouse publically, it could ruin your chances of ever reconciling.

Moreover, it could negatively impact your spouse’s employment opportunities. Think about that logically: whether you stay together or get a divorce, they need to earn a living to contribute to household costs or alimony payments.

BONUS: No Matter What, Under No Circumstances Should You Contact the Other Party

It’s tempting to blame the other person and absolve your spouse of sin. And sometimes, you may want to track them down and tell them what’s what.

But practically and emotionally speaking, it’s never the right call — unless the other party is someone you both know, like a friend or family member.

Even in that case, though, split the blame evenly.

The bottom line is that no good will come out of tracking down your partner’s paramour. Let it be.

How Do You Reconcile a Marriage After Infidelity?

It’s possible to reconcile a marriage after infidelity. It’ll take time and work, but millions of couples have done it, and you can, too, with the right approach and attitude.

When working through the redemption and reunification process, consider doing the following:

Date Nights: It may sound cliche, but setting aside some time to rekindle your romance is imperative. You don’t have to get dressed up and go out, but you should take a few hours a week to hang out, talk, and enjoy something mutually.

Abstain from Alcohol When Arguing: There will be arguments while you rebuild your relationship. Alcohol only makes it harder and can unnecessarily escalate the situation. So when you’re having discussions about the matter, stick to soft drinks.

Be Patient and Compassionate: We get it: cheating hurts — and it will hurt for a while. But a while isn’t forever. So give it time. Also, being compassionate with yourself and your spouse goes a long way. Remember, throughout life, we all mess up in countless ways. Yes, this may be a bigger mistake than most, but ultimately, that’s what it was: a mistake. However, it stops becoming a mistake when a pattern arises, and at that point, divorcing may be the best option.

Set or Reset Rules: Formally resetting or reaffirming relationship boundaries is wise in the wake of a cheating scandal. Bringing expectations to the fore reestablishes parameters and renews each party’s commitment to the union. But save yourself some money and skip the vow renewal. Too many people use it as a band-aid and fail to do the real reparative work.

Does Infidelity Pain Ever Go Away?

It’s been said that time heals all wounds — and that’s true for many people, but not all. Whether the pain will ever go away depends on the person and situation.

However, studies suggest it takes the average individual between 18 months and two years to heal the pain caused by a cheating partner.

List of Marital Boundaries After an Affair

Falling out of love after infidelity is also a possibility. And if that describes you, it’s OK to walk away. But if you plan to stay, setting boundaries while working through the issue is necessary. Not setting any could hamstring the process.

But what should they be?

All communication with the other party must be severed.

The person who was cheated on has every right to create a safe space for themself. So if they ask you to sleep on the couch or spare room, acquiesce.

The scorned party also gets to decide the level of intimacy.

Agree to either counseling or scheduled talks to work through the issue.

Banning your partner from spending any time with members of their sexual preference is tempting, but it’s a bit extreme. Instead, consider a general curfew or implementing an entertainment schedule.

Set emotional boundaries. Are there certain words or phrases that unnecessarily escalate the situation? If so, ban them. The same goes for triggering topics that have nothing to do with the issue at hand.

Infidelity doesn’t necessarily spell the end of a relationship. Marriage reconciliation is possible — it happens all the time. You just don’t hear about it because people would understandably rather show off their latest vacation pics than talk about their marital discord.

So don’t despair. There is a way through. It won’t be an easy haul, but there very well could be a light at the end of the tunnel. Good luck.

Breakfast is still one of the most important meals of the day, especially if you’re trying to lose weight. Choosing a morning meal that contains protein, fiber, and very little added sugar is key for your success throughout the day.

In fact, research shows that those who consumed around 30 grams of protein for breakfast were more satisfied throughout the day and experienced fewer cravings and less hunger.

Continue reading to find out what you should be leaving off your plate to lose weight faster, and for more healthy breakfast tips, check out 13 Cozy Breakfast Recipes for Weight Loss.

Breakfast pastries like donuts are a delicious choice in the morning, but these will easily derail your weight loss goals for multiple reasons.

“It’s not just the calories that make these pastries a poor choice for weight loss goals, but they also may contain lots of added sugar, unhealthy fats (many of which come from the deep frying process), and very little fiber, which could leave you feeling unsatisfied,” says Christine Milmine, RDN and Owner of Plant-Powered You. Fiber can help you feel full for longer, helping prevent overeating that could derail your weight loss efforts.

Many different types of flavored yogurt you can find at the store come with high amounts of added sugar, and starting your day this way, without protein and fiber, can hinder your weight loss attempts.

“A better idea would be to purchase plain (high-protein) yogurt and add fresh fruit or unsweetened dried fruit. If you need more sweetness, you could drizzle a little honey over it, which would more than likely be less sugar than certain packaged yogurts,” says Jinan Banna, PhD, RD.

An important component of a breakfast that can help with losing weight is a balance between protein, fiber, healthy fats, and carbohydrates. So when you grab a quick breakfast pastry on the go like a muffin, you’re not giving the body enough of the nutrients that it needs in the morning.

“Muffins are typically high in calories, refined flour, and sugar with very little (if any) protein which will not keep you full on its own,” says Hannah Byrne, MS, RDN, “and with this food not being filling, it will cause you to snack more throughout the day, making weight loss more difficult.

Shutterstock

“Toast is great to pair with other breakfast foods, but by itself is not filling and is low in protein and fiber, depending on the bread,” says Byrne, “and just like muffins, not eating a filling food can cause you to snack more throughout the morning and afternoon.”

Dietitian Jeanette Kimszal, RDN, NLC with Root Nutrition & Education warns that many types of breakfast cereals will give you a dose of added sugar with very little protein and fiber, which isn’t a helpful combination when you’re attempting to lose weight.

And according to Cleveland Clinic, regularly consuming too much refined sugar can lead to things like type 2 diabetes, spikes in glucose, and excess storage of fat.

For healthier cereal options, you can try one of these options that are best for weight loss.

Sometimes when we try to lose weight, we don’t always get the results we hope for. But it’s not always because of obvious problems. If you’re in your 40s and have been trying to lose weight for quite some time but keep hitting roadblocks, there may be some underlying reasons that you’re not aware of yet.

For instance, even when you exercise regularly and change around your diet, small choices throughout the day can still hinder your progress. These habits can be harmful to your process because they can easily go unnoticed. That’s why we talked with a few experts to get their take on some of the drinking habits you may want to avoid to get a lean body after 40.

Continue reading to learn about drinking habits to stay away from when you’re trying to lose weight. And for more healthy eating tips, make sure to check out 7 Healthiest Foods on the Planet.

Shutterstock

There’s nothing wrong with putting some delicious creamer into your morning cup of coffee, but registered dietitian Sarah Williams, MS, RD warns that it can quickly pack on the calories.

“Coffee creamers can be a hidden source of excess calories for many people, and I’ve had clients discover they were getting over 200 calories each day from coffee creamer without realizing it,” says Williams, “so instead, I recommend adding a tablespoon of half and half (which has about 20 calories) and using something like stevia as a sweetener.”

Alcohol in moderation is usually okay for your health. In fact, some studies have suggested that moderate consumption of red wine (one glass per day) can have positive benefits on your heart health. And many “Blue Zone” parts around the world, areas where the average lifespan is longer, partake in drinking wine on a daily basis.

However, registered dietitian Lindsey DeSoto, RDN, LD, owner of The Dietitian Momma warns that it is far too easy to go past a “moderate amount,” which can negatively impact your health goals.

“The typical glass of wine or beer can contain around 160 calories, and this can easily lead to consuming an extra few hundred calories and unwanted weight gain,” says DeSoto, “and even low-calorie options can impact your body composition because when you consume alcohol, your body uses it as a source of energy before fat or carbohydrates, which leads to excess storage of lipids and glucose, ultimately being stored as extra fat.”

Shutterstock

Drinking excess amounts of sugar is of the quickest ways to get off your weight loss track. In fact, a study published in Circulation found that sugar-sweetened beverages (think sodas and sugary processed juices) were directly linked to excess fat around the belly.

“Drinks with excess sugar also cause blood sugar spikes and can contribute to feelings of unnecessary hunger,” says registered dietitian Morgyn Clair, MS, RDN, an author at Fit Healthy Momma, “and some of the worst choices are things like margaritas, piña coladas, and cocktails made with heavy syrup and regular soda.”

RELATED: The #1 Worst Drink That Increases Belly Fat, Says Science

Shutterstock

It may be tempting to switch over to diet sodas to avoid the added sugar, but studies, unfortunately, show that these most likely won’t help your weight loss goals either.

“Despite having zero calories and sugar, overconsumption of diet drinks can prevent you from having a lean body because artificial sweeteners found in diet sodas can lead to food cravings and excess calorie intake,” says DeSoto, “and a study from earlier this year found that diet drinks made with the artificial sweetener sucrose can cause an increase in appetite and cravings for high-calorie foods in people who are obese.”

Whether you’re buying a new car or just some groceries, there are always risks that come with making a purchase. This blog post will go over ways to protect yourself from being scammed when buying something, so you can have peace of mind.

Research The Company Before Making A Purchase

If it seems too good to be true, then it probably is. You should research any company you plan on purchasing from and make sure they have a positive reputation. This way, if anything goes wrong, your money won’t be lost forever. Also, take the time to explore online sources until you find honest product guides from reputable sites. These guides will be able to help you make a more informed decision regarding the product you are interested in purchasing.

Ask For Warranty Information

When you buy an expensive item such as a car or furniture set, ask for information about what kind of warranty the company offers in case something goes wrong. If you’re buying an item that is under warranty, then it can be repaired for free or replaced if necessary. Be sure to read the fine print and ask as many questions as possible so nothing gets lost in translation when making a purchase. This way, you will be able to avoid any surprises in the future.

Do Not Give Out Payment Information Until You Are Ready To Finalize Your Purchase

If a company asks for your financial account number before they ship an item, then this is usually a sign that something is wrong. Unless it’s PayPal or Venmo, do not hand over sensitive banking information until you have confirmed that the product has been shipped to you. Also, make sure that any payment arrangements are in writing before finalizing your purchase. Keep in mind that the number one rule for avoiding scams is to never pay upfront before receiving the product you are buying.

Take Time To Compare Prices

If you’ve found the right company with the perfect product, then take the time to compare prices before making a final purchase. You can always find online coupon codes that are available for new customers or returning buyers, so don’t forget to do some research until you have found something within your price range. In this way, you’ll be sure to get the best deal on whatever it is that you’re buying. However, make sure that it is a fair price. If the item you want to purchase suddenly seems too cheap, then it might be fake or stolen.

Don’t Click On Pop Up Ads

Be wary of any popup advertisements when shopping online, especially if it’s a product or service that you haven’t heard about before. These websites are often created by hackers who want to trick people into giving them their sensitive information, so they can steal from them down the line. If you’re not sure about a product, then try and do some research online rather than clicking on any ads immediately. Keep in mind that ads are often designed to look like legitimate pages, so you should always be careful before making a purchase.

Avoid Using Public Computers

If you’re buying anything with an account number or personal information attached, then it is best to use a computer that you only access privately. Many scammers will try and trick people into giving out their account information through phishing websites, so be sure to stay away from public computers when making any kind of online purchase. As much as possible, try and stick to your devices when shopping. You will be more secure that way. Nevertheless, when you have no choice but to use a public computer, try to be discreet about anything you do so scammers can’t get their hands on your personal information.

Be Careful When Using Peer To Peer Networks

When you are looking to buy something big, such as a car or furniture set, it might be tempting to turn to peer-to-peer networks like Craigslist. However, these platforms can often be breeding grounds for scammers. If you’re not careful, you could end up losing your money without getting the product that you wanted in return. Try to stick to reputable companies when buying anything large. This way, you can ensure that you don’t get scammed.

These are just a few tips that can help you avoid being scammed when buying something. By following these guidelines, you’ll be able to make safe and informed decisions when purchasing products online or in person. Remember, the most important thing is to never hand over payment information until you are sure about your purchase.

If you’re 40 or thereabouts, your life is probably pretty busy. You’re at the peak of your career. If you have kids, they are eating up a ton of your time. Maybe you’re not exercising as much ask you’d like to because of the above. And maybe you’re still entrenched in those eating habits you established in your late 20s and 30s.

Your 40s are the perfect time to assess your lifestyle and health. Have you put on a few pounds? That’s pretty common for the 40-something. As we age, many of us move less, lose muscle mass, and often consume as much if not more than we did when we were younger, says Liz Weinandy, MPH, RDN, a registered dietitian nutritionist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus. “If you are over 40 and have started to put on some pounds, rethink your total calorie needs,” she says. “It changes as our lives change.”

Overlooking how your calorie needs change as you age isn’t the only reason why you may not be able to maintain a lean body. There are many eating habits you once had that now pack on the pounds as your body has changed. Avoid these eating habits that registered dietitians say pack on the calories that are keeping you from achieving that lean body at 40+, and for more on how to eat healthy, make sure you learn of these Breakfast Habits to Avoid If You Want to Lose Visceral Fat, Say Dietitians.

Shutterstock

Aim to eat the bulk of your calories during the daytime hours. “If you are seeing your blood sugar trend upwards, eat fewer carbs at night and move them to the morning and early afternoon when your body can handle them better,” suggests Weinandy. “Research is showing that late-night eating is really not good for us.”

“It’s easy to grab a glass of wine or a beer after a long day especially when dealing with the added pressures of life that come in our 40’s,” says registered holistic nutritionist Pamela Barton, founder of Butterfly Holistic Nutrition + Lifestyle. “However, our bodies process alcohol less efficiently as we get so regular drinking will increase fat stores and can contribute to a fatty liver.”

Shutterstock

Weight gain in our 40s is often followed by drastic attempts to lose it by severely restricting calories, which is nearly impossible to sustain, or eating unsatisfying “diet” meals, which can lead to binge eating later on. Trying to lose weight fast usually fails and exerts an emotional toll on the dieter. “Repeated attempts to lose weight can be more harmful than just remaining at a higher weight,” says registered dietitian nutritionist Laura Krauza, MS, LDN, of Waistline Dietitian. “Studies have reinforced the connection between dieting to lose weight and weight cycling and suggest that yo-yo dieting most strongly predicts future weight gain.”

Shutterstock

In other words, avoid unpredictable, haphazard, unplanned eating that results from not being on a relatively regular eating schedule that works with your body’s natural circadian rhythms. Spur-of-the-moment eating “confuses the body, triggers unwelcome blood sugar fluctuations, throws your hunger hormones out of whack, and disrupts sleep,” says Isa Kujawski, MPH, RDN, a functional mind-body nutritionist and owner of Mea Nutrition LLC.

Shutterstock

For most women over age 40, simple carbohydrates become harder to process and use without being stored as fat. But we like our refined flour products and sugary snacks and beverages. “If you like carbs, switch to more complex carbohydrates, such as sweet potatoes, whole oats, brown rice, and quinoa,” suggests Krauza. Pay attention to nutrition facts and ingredients labels. “Skip the breads and baked goods as much as you can,” says Krauza. “Highly processed, refined foods are typically calorically dense with relatively low nutrient density and contain a host of ingredients that may be foreign to the body and not only detrimental to your waistline, but to your overall health,” adds Kujawski.

Shutterstock

Keeping a food log not only illustrates what you’re swallowing but when. If you keep track of everything you eat, you may find that you’re eating meals and snacking throughout the day and your “eating window” has grown to maybe even 16 hours. “Studies have shown that in order to remain lean and avoid blood sugar imbalances—which contribute to belly fat—intermittent fasting and other time-restricted eating strategies can support a healthy body weight,” says Barton. A new study found the #1 Best Fasting Schedule for Quicker Weight Loss.

Do you ever find yourself in that dreaded situation where you’re face-to-face with an acquaintance or stranger, and you’re forced to make some kind of conversation?

Whether or not you were expecting to be with this person, you’re now stuck in the moment trying to come up with small talk topics and struggling to know exactly what to say.

How was your weekend? What do you think about the weather? Do you have any plans for the summer?

The prospect of having these short conversations can lead to anxiety, as you try to straddle saying enough while not saying the wrong thing.

Let’s review some small talk topics you can bring up in these uncomfortable situations that will seem neither forced nor awkward.

What is small talk?

Small talk is the polite (and sometimes superficial) conversations you have during social interactions.

When you engage in small talk, you generally address unimportant and non-controversial subjects, and the conversation doesn’t often veer into more profound or deep topics.

These kinds of conversations happen between people who aren’t particularly close to each other — such as two guests at a dinner party or a coworker on the elevator.

With small talk topics, people are aiming to find points of genuine agreement with someone they don’t know well enough to delve into more substantive conversation.

While this idle chit chat doesn’t convey important ideas or engage your analytical mind, that doesn’t mean it’s not important. It serves a social function of bonding over information.

What are examples of small talk?

Let’s say you’ve been invited to a party by a friend (Sarah). You don’t know anyone except Sarah who introduces you to a new person named Jim. Here’s how to talk small talk when you meet someone new:

You: Hi Jim, it’s nice to meet you.

Jim: Good to meet you, too.

You: So, have you known Sarah a long time?

Jim: Yeah, we’ve worked together for a few years.

You: Oh yeah? Are you in marketing as well?

Jim: No, I’m in IT, but I coordinate with Sarah’s team a lot. How about you? What do you do?

You: I’m in marketing, too, for a sports radio station.

Jim: Oh cool. That sounds like fun. Did you watch the game last night?

You: Absolutely! It was a nail-biter.

As you see, small talk evolves from one piece of commonality — in this case, the relationship with Sarah. But sometimes the thread of small talk conversation can stall out once you reach a natural ending to the initial topic.

That’s why it’s so valuable to develop your skills and have small talk starters handy when you feel the conversation waining.

Why is small talk an important skill to have?

Research shows that small talk skills are necessary for building connections with other people.

If done correctly, making small talk with someone can lay the foundation for a potential relationship with this person.

It helps demonstrate your communication style, which can be an effective way to develop and extend your personal and professional networks.

Engaging in small talk also makes you likable. People are attracted to those who are confident enough to engage in comfortable conversation.

It is important to remember that small talk isn’t just a method of communication and a way of filling an awkward gap. It’s also a gesture of respect that most people appreciate.

How to Use Small Talk in Conversation

So, how do you make small talk interesting so that the conversation can evolve into a deeper connection. Let’s take a look at some topics and small talk questions you can keep in mind for social occasions.

You might write down some of these small talk tips and keep them in your purse or wallet so you can refer to them shortly before your next interaction with someone.

9 Good Small Talk Topics

Select some of these 9 small talk examples for your next conversation:

1. The Weather

Yes, talking about the weather seems dull, but it is a good neutral topic that everyone can relate to.

Even if the weather isn’t particularly noteworthy at the moment, it can still be a good topic of chit chat. Some things you can say are:

It’s a nice day, don’t you think? I thought it would rain.

Looks like you brought the beautiful weather with you.

Can you believe how cold it is? I thought this was supposed to be spring!

You can also ask someone about the climate in their hometown.

Is the weather here much different from where you grew up?

What climate do you prefer? Why?

If you could live anywhere based entirely on the weather, where would you live?

2. Sports

Some people know about sports than others, so there are some rules of thumb to consider before discussing sports.

You want to know your audience, so this topic may be best for people with whom you have crossed paths in the past. You can also preface the conversation with, “So, are you a sports fan?” or “Did you watch the game last night?”

Having an enthusiastic conversation about your favorite team can be fun, but don’t let it get heated if you and your conversation partner disagree about some aspect of your sports discussion.

If you find the conversation is taking a tense turn, make a quick topic change and find an area where you better connect.

3. Entertainment

Some entertainment subjects that are effective conversation starters and good small talk topics are:

Movies

TV shows

Local restaurants

Music

Books

To get ready to discuss these topics, keep up with what is trending and popular in these topic categories. Refresh your memory about the latest book you’ve read and the most recent restaurant you’ve tried.

Ask the other person if he or she has seen any good movies or Netflix series lately or heard any new music that’s worth sharing.

Talk about your book if you think it will interest the other person, or ask if they have read it. This is a quick way to find some common ground.

4. Food

Food is one of the best small talk topics because everyone can relate to it.

Ask people which restaurants in the area they like to frequent and the best dishes that are offered. If they aren’t fans of going out to eat, ask them what (or if) they like to cook.

Or, if you are at an event, say something positive about the food that invites a response. For example, “The wedding cake is gorgeous. What flavor do you think it is?” or “Have you tried the crab cakes? They are the best I have ever had!”

5. Work

Talking about work is a natural conversation starter because most everyone has had a career or is currently working.

Sharing your career backgrounds allows you to find areas of common interest and connection. You may discover you know the same people or that your job responsibilities have some similarities.

It’s also interesting to learn more about a career field you haven’t pursued or experienced before.

Talking about your profession can be tricky, however, because you don’t want the conversation to turn into a boring explanation of what you both do as you watch each other’s eyes glaze over.

Make it interesting and unexpected by asking something like, “What skill do you most often use in your work?” or “What’s your favorite aspect of your job?”

6. Hobbies

Try to learn about the other person’s passions. People are often enthusiastic when talking about the things they love, and this will give you a chance to connect with the person on a more personal level.

Ask how they spend their free time, if they’re taking any classes for fun, or what things they would like to try doing in the future but haven’t had the chance yet.

A small talk example on this topic could be, “What’s the most recent new hobby or interest that you’ve tried?”

7. News and Current Events

An effective way to prepare for small talk in social situations is by reading (or listening to) the news every day.

Stay up-to-date on the happenings in the world and your city. Talk about the new construction project that’s being planned for downtown, the rising costs of traveling, or the recent teachers’ strike.

There is always something going on in the news that is on everyone’s mind. But be sure to stay away from controversial news and divisive political topics that could tank the conversation.

Use current events to build a bridge between you and the other person but not as a way to discover the other person’s political leanings.

8. Family

People commonly ask others about their families. You may ask something like, “Do you have any children?” or “Where is your family from?”

Be prepared to answer these types of family questions as well as ask them. Engaging in small talk about family will help you learn a lot about each other in a short period of time.

You will likely find some common ground here, whether its that you both have an older sister or your parents grew up in the same town.

9. Travel

People love to talk about the places they’ve visited. Ask your conversation partner about her favorite places to travel and what she recommends doing while there. This might help spark your interest for your next vacation.

If you’ve been to the same travel destination, share your experiences and your views of the culture. There are so many topics you can build around a travel conversation, such as favorite restaurants, local interests, sports, language differences. etc.

If the other person hasn’t traveled much, ask about his bucket list travel and adventure ideas.

Now that you know some good topics to talk about for small talk discussions, let’s drill down to some unique questions you can incorporate into the conversation to make it less mundane.

If you want to have more positive and meaningful conversations, it starts with great questions.

15 Good Small Talk Questions

Review these 15 questions to make small talk in a conversation with someone:

1. What is going great in your life right now?

It’s so easy for conversations to turn negative – work’s stressful, the weather is unpleasant, tax season is around the corner. By starting a conversation with a positive question, it can keep moving in that direction.

2. What is the weirdest thing that has happened to you lately?

This is a great way to connect to new people, and with such an open-ended question, they have the room to take it wherever they want.

Maybe they’ll recap an awkward meeting they recently had or they might share a hilarious personal story.

3. What were you like in high school?

When you meet people who are decades out of adolescence, you have no idea who they were during these self-defining years.

Sometimes it may come as a complete surprise that your conversation partner was the class clown, the jock, or a bookworm who spent most of the time in the library.

It’s always fun to be surprised by people’s pasts and to share your own stories from your high school days.

4. What was your first job?

You and your conversation partner may be serious professionals now, but you both had to start somewhere. Take the time to laugh about the movie theater uniforms, paper routes, and cheap mall stores that were part of your first real job.

5. What is the best advice you’ve ever gotten?

Not only will this question help you get to know someone really quickly, but it also allows you to hear some quality advice that you may have never heard before.

6. Which app on your phone do you use the most often?

This is another unique get-to-know-you question that will take people by surprise. But if you think about it, the answer offers you a good peek into their life.

7. What’s a movie you didn’t enjoy that everyone else loved and vice versa?

Find out what makes this person different from the rest and get a viewpoint from someone who has an unpopular opinion.

8. What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten?

This could get someone talking about some traveling they have done or maybe a hilarious cooking mishap. Either way, it will have them reminiscing about something funny.

9. What is your guilty pleasure?

While people don’t often proudly announce their guilty pleasures, once they are voiced, other people usually follow suit.

Maybe it’s that glass of wine before dinner or taking a 15-minute break for a cat nap during the workday.

If you can find common ground with someone on their guilty pleasure, you just made a great connection.

10. If you could talk to anyone in the world, living or dead, who would it be and why?

What a fun question to ask to get to know someone’s values and interests. Choosing one person out of millions of possibilities forces the speaker to zero in on someone who might be an inspiration, mentor, celebrity, or historic figure.

Understanding why your conversation partner chose the particular person can launch another series of interesting and informative answers.

11. Are you more of an introvert or an extrovert? What preferences make you one or the other?

You may be able to guess the answer to this question just by speaking with this person for a few minutes. However, many introverts have extraverted qualities for short periods of time.

Discovering the answers to these questions can help you better navigate the conversation and know whether or not to keep it light or go deeper. Introverts tend to prefer deeper conversation over prolonged small talk.

12. I noticed that you _____. Tell me more about it.

Take notice of something about the other person. Are they wearing something you like? Did they drive up in a classic sports car? Are they not eating meat? Do they have a cast on their arm? Are they holding a book?

Of course, you don’t want to point out anything unsightly or controversial (ie: a political button), but if you notice something interesting, bring it up and find out more.

13. What made you decide on a career in _______?

It’s fascinating to learn how people landed in the their particular career fields. Some people have had a passion for their careers since they were young. Others fell into their jobs or were pressured by parents or peers to follow a certain path.

The answer you receive can open the door to a longer discussion about the person’s background, education, experience, and interests.

14. Do you have any pets? If so, what kind? If not, why not?

Is this person you’re talking with an animal person? If so, knowing if they are a cat person or a dog person can tell you a lot.

Cat people tend to be more creative and enjoy solitary activities like reading, writing, and gardening. They credit their pet with helping them reduce stress.

Dog people are twice as likely to work in finance and enjoy sports, dancing, and travel. They see their dogs as a means to get more exercise.

If they don’t have a pet, is it because they don’t like animals or because they can’t fit one into their lives right now?

15. What is your biggest pet peeve?

We all have them — that something that really bugs us and yanks our chain. Maybe it’s loud talkers, throat-clearers at the movies, people who interrupt, or someone leaving their dishes in the sink.

If you want to get below the surface of this question, ask your conversation partner why this particular pet peeve bothers them so much. You might find out something much more interesting about his or her personality.

Keeping all of these small talk ideas in mind, what are some things that you definitely want to avoid while engaging in small talk?

You don’t want to find yourself in an awkward situation where there is a silence that you don’t know how to fill because the momentum of the conversation just came to a halt.

Let’s look at some topics that are best left untouched.

As you are considering what to talk about when you’re having small talk, you want to make sure the conversation stays light and relatively uneventful.

You don’t want to cause an argument of any kind or make people want to leave the conversation. What is not an appropriate topic for small talk? To avoid making anyone feel uncomfortable, don’t talk about:

politics

religion

personal finances

personal appearance

death or illness

personal gossip

offensive jokes

anything so specific that very few people can relate to it

topics that are sexual in nature

You’ll know pretty quickly if you’ve veered into a conversation topic that is offensive or questionable if you’re able to read body language and facial expressions.

If you think you might have said something out of line, be sure to quickly repair the damage by saying something like, “I said the wrong thing here, and I apologize. Let’s talk about something else.”
