Mothers carry the weight of the world on their shoulders, not to mention the heaping loads of guilt they feel for not being perfect.

Adults who blame their parents have so many psychological aspects to focus on, from Attachment Theory to the unmet needs of an inner child.

Even basic acts of love, like fixing a daughter’s smudged lipstick, can elicit harsh responses.

What is it going to take to stop blaming mom?

Can we create a world where no mother ever wonders again, “Why does my daughter blame me for everything?”

Why Do Daughters Blame Their Mothers for Everything?

Adults who blame their parents are common, but it seems no parent takes more of the brunt than the mother of a daughter.

Yes, there are really bad moms out there who probably deserve to take some, if not all, of the blame.

However, that’s the exception, not the rule. Not only do daughters’ blame shift like crazy, they now have psychology and genetics to back them up.

Attachment Theory

Psychoanalyst John Bowlby developed the Attachment Theory to explain the connection between adult behavior and the first few years of that person’s life.

In the first two and half years of life, a child depends on a mother for affection, nourishment, and basic needs. How the daughter and mother “attach” will likely define how that child turns out as an adult.

Inner Child Issues

“Healing the inner child” are buzzwords in today’s culture. Even though our behavior is directly related to the attention or neglect we received as children, we still work to heal that inner child allegedly inside all of us.

While adults can adapt or overcome early childhood issues, the inner child is still sitting somewhere suffering deep in our souls.

Easy Targets

Mothers, with their unconditional love, just make easy targets for daughters. Whether it’s the temper tantrum of a two-year-old who wants another snack or the hormones of an independence-seeking teenager, it’s easy to blame mom.

Mothers are used to unrealistic expectations from society, social circles, and inside their own homes. Nothing makes a mother more upset than seeing their child hurting, and they’ll take all the punches to help the daughter through whatever challenge.

Hereditary Patterns

Mothers might inadvertently be teaching their daughters that it’s never okay to stop blaming mom. How many people do you know who had really strict parents but then those parents became grandparents who spoiled their grandkids?

Adults who blame their parents can carry on into old age. If a daughter sees her mom blaming grandma for everything, she might act accordingly.

Daughters Who Blame Their Mothers for Everything: 13 Reasons It’s Bad for Both of You

Mom blaming isn’t a new thing for Generation Z or the Millenials. Even the Washington Post tackled this topic back in 1987. While there isn’t a perfect way to stop blaming mom, there are perspectives every daughter needs to consider before making a maternal mess.

1. It Feeds the Beast of Blame

What starts out as outrageous accusations of blame eventually becomes so common neither mother nor daughter thinks twice about it.

The daughter shifts blame, and the mother absorbs it to keep the peace. This sets the stage for another blame showdown throughout both of their lives.

Valuable opportunities for mother-daughter connections are lost in a chess match of “Who’s to Blame?”

2. It Supports Everything Women Have Fought Against

Moms already get a raw end of the deal. Either they work too much and don’t give their kids enough attention, or they “sit at home all day” doing “nothing” but raising their children.

Even the number of snacks or screen time a child gets is blamed on the mother by her condescending counterparts.

Ours is a society that demands a work-life balance but still expects mothers to be perfect. Women of all ages should support each other and fight for precious civil, professional, and medical rights. They should not wage wars with blame ammunition.

3. It Builds Resentment

Adults who blame their parents will generally get away with it, even if a verbal fight precedes it. Deep down, in places the mother doesn’t like to talk about, she becomes more resentful.

This can lead to the mother carrying resentment and risk hurting her relationship with the daughter and all her other children.

The daughter can become resentful when “blaming mom” is second nature, and she can’t let go of what the parent did that impacted the daughter’s life.

4. It Causes Words We Can’t Take Back

Words like “I didn’t ask to be born!”, “I wish you had never been born!”, “I can’t believe I endured so much pain to have an ungrateful child like you!” and “You are the worst mom ever!” can be so hurtful for years to come.

When mothers and daughters are caught in the blame game, hurtful words come out. While we can forgive the people we love, we can never forget verbal scars that cut deep.

5. It Creates a Toxic Attachment

We see it in nature and our daily lives. No bond is stronger than that of a mother and daughter. Even the most inexperienced nature lover knows never to get between a momma bear and her cubs.

When a relationship is strong and healthy, a lifetime of memories is created. When the blame stays the same, two women are now co-dependent on each other.

The mother is always trying to avoid getting blamed by helping the child, and the child doesn’t know about life without being able to blame the mom. The daughter might not chase dreams because they are living a blame nightmare.

6. It Creates Avoidance of Real Issues

Let’s say a daughter has ongoing issues with finding a trusted and respectful partner. If the daughter blames the mother for not setting an example of a healthy relationship, the daughter isn’t addressing her own issues directly.

The same can be said of eating disorders: “Why did you always make me clean my plate? Now I’m so afraid of being fat I can’t eat anything!”

7. It Creates a Transactional Relationship

When a daughter feels wronged, she’s not going to stop blaming mom if it has worked in the past. The cycle can be something like this:

I blame mom.

Mom feels bad.

Mom buys me something or does a task I don’t want to do to make me stop being mad at her.

This transaction is nowhere near the grace expected in a loving mother-daughter relationship. Blaming someone for something generally requires a resolution of the issue.

A daughter being nice to her mother shouldn’t come with terms and conditions like a website.

8. It Can Breed Narcissism from an Early Age

“Daddy, I want an Oompa Looma NOOOOOW!…. You never give me anything I want.” Those words from Veruca Salt in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory show the worst side of giving a child too much of what they want with no consequences or accountability.

Narcissism can develop just as much from excessive praise and adoration as it can from gross neglect.

Children who blame their parents can become adults who blame their parents. Without learning accountability, the child is never accepted or treated as they are. They are treated how they want to be seen as perfect and blameless.

Parents can inadvertently feed the narcissistic beast that was once their adorable child. This can create children who turn into adults with a personality disorder among the hardest to treat.

9. It Can Create a Lack of Boundaries

A daughter’s relationship with her parents forms the very foundation of boundaries in the child’s life. We learn early not to touch a hot stove. Either fear of the hot stove or the act of touching it reinforces that boundary.

When a daughter doesn’t stop blaming mom for the stove being hot, that daughter isn’t learning boundaries and will struggle with this in every single relationship for the rest of her life.

A well-blamed mom will continue to adapt to the lack of boundaries to keep their precious child “happy,” not realizing they are setting the child up for a life of relationship challenges.

10. It Can Very Well Be True

Topping the charts of “Very Unhealthy Mother-Daughter Relationships” is when a mom truly is to blame but might be dealing with her own personality disorder or genetic traits that make it impossible to see her faults.

It creates a childhood and lifetime of conflict as a daughter can’t stop blaming mom because mom really is to blame for certain things.

While any relationship between a mother and daughter will have conflict, every gathering shouldn’t be akin to a verbal UFC match. Own your errors as a parent. Set a good example of accountability.

11. It Can Cause Mental Illness

Verbal abuse can be just as damaging as physical abuse, and it can go on longer because there aren’t injuries in plain sight.

A mother might ask a friend, “Why does my daughter blame me for everything?” but inside, she could be dealing with crippling anxiety, depression, and self-loathing.

Many expect mothers to be perfect, always have the right answer, and never make a misstep. On top of that, few mothers think, “I am doing a great job at this mothering thing. I should have two more kids!”

Add in sleepless nights, emotionally draining fights, and balancing out other relationships, and it’s no wonder that one in 10 moms is depressed. When a mom is prone to depression, that trait can be passed on to daughters, creating a family tree of mental issues.

12. It Can Impact Every Other Relationship

The mother-daughter bond is one of nature’s strongest and most resilient. When the two parties involved don’t have a healthy relationship, there can be a sense of “If I can’t get along with her, I can’t get along with anyone.”

A daughter who doesn’t stop blaming her mom will assign blame in other relationships, causing tension in her personal and professional life.

A mother who always gets blamed by her daughter could begin to accept all responsibility in her circle.

13. It’s Most Likely You Will Live to Regret It

The odds are a daughter will outlive a child, but research from the Institute of Medicine shows that 18% of parents lose a child by age 70.

As Buddha said, “The trouble is, you think you have time.” When maternal blame becomes common, it might be the last conversation a mother and daughter have.

That leaves the surviving woman with guilt on top of grief and a lifetime of regrets. Guilt is rarely rational or logical. Even in the “bargaining” phase of grief, the survivor tries to unweave years of blame for just one more chance to do it right.

What Do You Do When Your Child Blames You For Everything?

Even in the earliest Bible chapter, Adam blames his heavenly father for “giving him a woman,” who then shared and ate the forbidden fruit. It’s essential to start by knowing you are not alone.

You are not a failure because your child has these blame game issues. You do, however, have to own your role in it.

There are simple ways to avoid “fault lines” in your home.

Don’t Fight Back: When a child is in the heat of the moment and shooting blame darts at you, keep quiet. At most, say, “I’m sorry you feel that way.” Circle back to the topic when the child has calmed down.

Don’t Allow Blame at Home: That goes for everyone in the household. If something goes wrong, don’t assign blame. Figure out the path to fix it.

Own Your Mistakes: If you are to blame, set a good example by accepting responsibility for it. Don’t get into a tit-for-tat of “Remember the time you did XX, and I forgave you?”

Use the Socratic Method: Mothers often want to solve all their children’s problems. It can set the stage for blame. For example, “You told me it sounded like fun to go to Europe instead of getting an internship before graduation. Now I can’t get a job because of it!” When you use the Socratic Method to solve a problem, you aren’t giving advice but guiding your children through critical thinking.

“What are the benefits of going to Europe? What are the potential risks? How will this benefit your future career?”

End the conversation with something like, “You have a lot to think about. I trust you’ll make the best decision for you, and I support whatever decision you make.”

What if you are already caught in the Blame Game hamster wheel and can’t get out? Remember this mantra, “It’s never the wrong time to do the right thing.”

Enlist a family counselor if you think that’s the best path, or have an honest conversation about boundaries and accountability with your daughter.

Final Thoughts

There is going to be tension in a parental relationship.

Whether it’s a child who isn’t emotionally developed enough to understand accountability, a teenager dealing with hormones (or a mother going through the hormone-drive cycle of menopause), or an adult child who struggles with past sins, you can’t avoid conflict.

You can set a healthy stage to address and resolve the conflict. Mothering doesn’t stop when the child is 18. It’s a lifelong commitment, and you always have time to turn the relationship around.

Bananas are the most popular fresh fruit in the United States — and for good reason. They’re portable, tasty, and have many nutrients like potassium, vitamin B6, vitamin C, magnesium, copper, and fiber. But many people get hung up on the question of the fruit’s nutrition, especially how much sugar is in a banana.

Each medium banana provides 105 calories and 27 grams of carbs, including about 14 grams of fruit sugars. It’s that sugar — naturally found in bananas — that makes some people question whether they should swap out these beloved fruits. But before you sour on bananas, let’s look at their nutrition content in more detail.

How Many Grams of Sugar Are in One Banana?

The amount of sugar depends on the size of the fruit:

There are 14.4 grams of sugar in one medium banana

An extra-large banana has 18.6 grams of sugar

An extra-small banana has 9.9 grams of sugar

All of this sugar is naturally occurring — so don’t lump it in with the processed sugars found in foods like regular sodas, cakes, and candies. Sugar from fruit is “better than any refined sugar, because it’s a whole food that comes with nutrients and fiber, which helps regulate blood sugar,” says Keri Glassman, MS, RD, CDN. That doesn’t mean you can eat fruit all day long — it’s still possible to overindulge, Glassman notes — but our bodies are well equipped to handle the natural sugar in a banana and other types of fruit.

“We should not not have bananas because they have sugar in them,” adds Andrea N. Giancoli, MPH, RD, registered dietitian. “That’s how we’re intended to have sugar in food — versus as added sugars which are often ultra-processed foods. Don’t shun fruit because it has natural sugars. It should be a part of a healthful diet.”

Bananas also have “lots of different nutrients in the banana that our bodies are designed to digest and utilize,” Giancoli says. Bananas can be a good source of potassium, a “nutrient of concern” (a.k.a. a nutrient we don’t get enough of), according to the USDA 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

A large banana contains 487 mg of potassium. While there’s 905 mg of the essential mineral in a medium potato, “Americans eat a lot of bananas so they do lend a meaningful amount of potassium to our diets,” explains Giancoli.

Do Ripe Bananas Have More Sugar?

If you’ve ever eaten a slightly green banana or one that’s brown and mushy, you know there is a difference in how bananas taste based on their color. That is due to the natural ripening process.

“As a banana ripens, some of its starch turns to sugar,” says Giancoli. “The more ripe it is, the more sugar it’s going to have in it and the less resistant starch and more pectin you’re going to get.”

But, she reiterates that it’s imperative to remember those are naturally occurring sugars — and the sugar in fruit is not “bad” for you. If you prefer the taste and texture of bananas when they are less ripe, eat them when they are a little green. But if you like them sweeter and softer, there’s no reason to pass over a ripe banana as part of your healthy diet. You can even use ripe bananas in place of added sugars in foods like yogurt, oatmeal, and baked goods.

“When you need a sweet treat, snap off half, let it thaw a minute, blend it — and prepare for guiltless custardy goodness,” says Michele Promaulayko, author of Sugar Free 3. “I also like to smear fresh slices with nut butter.”

Are Bananas OK for People With Diabetes to Eat?

“Bananas definitely can be part of a healthful diet for someone who’s trying to manage their blood sugar,” says Giancoli. “They’re not that high on the glycemic index because of the resistant starch and pectin that dampen that blood sugar rise.”

First and foremost, if you have diabetes or you’re pre-diabetic, you need to follow your healthcare provider’s instructions when it comes to diet, but for the most part, those living with diabetes “should be eating a healthful diet that ought to include fruits” like bananas — if that’s a fruit they like to eat, says Giancoli.

Which Fruit Is Highest in Sugar?

Dates are among the sweetest fruits, says Giancoli. One medjool date contains 16 grams of sugar.

While a single date contains a similar amount of sugar as banana, “You get a lot more from a banana, including more to eat,” she adds. “A banana is more nutrient-dense than a date in comparison.”

Which Fruit Has the Least Sugar?

On the flip side, grapefruit scores lowest among fruits on the glycemic index, following closely by peaches. Technically, unripe (green) jackfruit contains less than 2 grams of sugar per 100-gram serving, but it’s usually not eaten as a fruit (but as a vegan meat swap). However, when a jackfruit ripens, it contains nearly 10 times as much sugar at 19 grams per 100-gram serving.

Almost everyone will admit they have areas or habits in their lives they feel can be better than they are at the moment. Some people may feel they can be more kind and compassionate, others feel they can be more assertive, and others feel they can be more peaceful and happy.

For me, a few years ago, I felt I could be less angry and explosive. I was short-tempered and would often result in very cruel words which I didn’t think through well or just simply be violent. And this was not something I enjoyed at all.

I tried a couple of anger management techniques to see if they could help but they were barely helpful. When I almost gave up on this character improvement project, it’s when I discovered mindfulness and went on to work with it to overcome this problem.

A Clear Breakdown of How I Used Mindfulness to Conquer Anger

Step 1. Research about mindfulness and get to know it

Although I had a rough idea of awareness, I decided to do deep research on it so that I would have concrete detailed information on the practice. I used reliable sources of information online for learning about mindfulness which are credible and authoritative in the self-improvement industry.

I also read books, visited self-help websites, watched videos, and listened to podcasts on mindfulness.

Step 2. Figure out an approach plan and where to start

After my research, I tried to figure out how I could apply it practically in my life. I had learned that mindfulness meditation was a form of training in mindfulness so I only found it natural to begin mindfulness by training myself through meditation.

My approach plan was to start with the meditation practice and later on try out other mindfulness techniques to increase my moments of mindfulness and increase its effects in my life.

Step 3. Get started with mindfulness meditation immediately

After having a vision and a plan of how to approach things, I made the effort of beginning the meditation practice right away. I used guided meditation resources for mindfulness meditation to help me learn how to do the meditation practice and also have a feel of what mindfulness is like. I began meditating for 5 minutes and slowly increased the duration as I got comfortable. This is an important step because most people don’t take it. They never get started at all.

Step 4. Aim to get better with every meditation session

After a couple of meditation sessions, I noticed that, since I was still a beginner, I was making a lot of mistakes which included feeling weighed down by the practice and feeling like it was too much work to do, just to name a few. So I researched more about the problems from people who have experienced the same in the past, found effective solutions for them, and began applying them as I aimed to make some improvements in every session. Online meditation communities and forums helped me find the solutions to my meditation problems.

“Mindfulness is the kind of light that shows us the way. It is the living Buddha inside of each of us. Mindfulness gives birth to insight, awakening, compassion, and love.” – Thich Nhat Hanh

Step 5. Reflect and visualize about solving the problem you have

My goal was to control my anger to the point where it couldn’t affect me even when I was told anything that might trigger negative reactions. I desired to be told something that felt insulting and not even flinch. So I would reflect every so often on how I wanted my life to be. I would think about the specific problems that are brought by the anger and I would try to look for solutions. And then I would visualize myself applying those solutions in the needed areas. I would consciously tell my mind that the visualized solution is exactly how I’m going to be doing things in my life going forward. Doing that helped me remember to be aware of myself when such times came and made applying the solutions much easier since I had already established in my mind, through visualization, exactly how I wanted things to be.

Step 6. Put in personal effort consistently to apply the solution

Now applying the solution every time isn’t easy. The first few times might be a bit easy but making them stick and become your second nature is quite hard. What I found to help with the issue of consistency and habit creation is that you have to view the solution like a new habit you’re going to form that’s going to stick with you forever.

So when you apply it the first few times successfully, you should still remind yourself that it’s what you’re going to do again when you’re in the same situation in the near future. I reminded myself and followed it up with physical effort. If I came across anything I knew might make me angry, I would try to be aware of myself and my emotions and then remind myself what I decided to be doing, and then I would act upon it immediately. Sometimes, I would choose to walk away, and other times I would keep quiet and discipline myself to not speak at all.

Step 7. Aim to be aware of yourself

Based on my personal experiences, I have learned that being always aware of yourself, not just when you want to solve a problem in your life, but every other moment really helps. Awareness helps you not get into that problem in the first place so that you avoid having to solve it after it has already affected your life.

However, being always aware is pretty hard and needs a lot of work. I achieved it by doing mindfulness meditation daily for 10 to 20 minutes to start with.

I also worked with mindful listening and speaking when I was having conversations with other people, mindful working when working, mindful walking when commuting to work or generally any time I was walking, mindful eating during my meal times, and mindful showering when taking a bath. Ideally, taking any chance you get to be aware and fully maximize it.

However, before I got to use these other mindfulness techniques, I only worked with mindfulness meditation and visualization to be aware of myself when trouble came and then used the other mindfulness techniques to be always aware of myself.

Moreover, I’d take my time in the evenings to review how my day was and how I did with regard to calming down my anger. And I’d visualize how I would approach the next day when I had the same anger problems. I’d take different versions of scenarios that would get me angry and see myself handling them much better without being lost in emotions. Doing this helped me remember automatically how to behave when I got into such situations.

To achieve all that I was dedicated, committed, disciplined, and focused on making a permanent change. Eventually, it worked!

The past two years have been challenging to say the least. Between people losing their jobs, businesses going under, and the medical condition of the world threatening our freedoms, it’s been a significant amount of trauma for us to adapt to as a collective. On the positive side of things, if anything, the last two years have taught us the power of resilience.

But surviving isn’t enough. Making it through is not a way of life. So how can you learn to be at your best when bad things are happening to and around you? How can you show up for yourself to make sure that you’re in the best possible position to be nimble and pivot as necessary, but also stay in alignment with who you really are?

These are the secrets to staying at the top of your game when life gets extra challenging.

What it takes to be at your best

When life has a season that drops you to your knees repeatedly, the very first thing you want to do is go back to basics because when things get tough, your mind defaults back to your most engrained coping habits—ranging from counter-productive to dangerously destructive. This can look like cutting back on sleep, bingeing TV shows for an escape, and isolating yourself from others. People also tend to eat comfort foods like mac and cheese, fried chicken, and ice cream that makes them feel safe but doesn’t actually support their bodies.

Having moments of these things is okay. Everyone needs a break sometimes. But if these have become your main coping mechanisms, it’s time to go back to basics so that you’re supporting a strong, healthy nervous system that can help you manage the stress.

Things like eating nutrient-dense food, getting high-quality (and enough) sleep, and caring for your body well are important factors in your stress management, as well as keeping yourself adaptable. Caring for your body can look like a lot of different things. This may mean going out in nature for a bit every day, getting massages to help release tension from your muscles, or exercising so that your body is strong enough to handle what life throws at you. Pay attention to the activities that make your body feel supported and build those into your schedule as non-negotiables.

To take this to the next level, build in practices that take care of your mind and manage your energy. Your mind affects your body. If you want your machine to run properly, you have to take care of its operating system—your mind. You can do this through journaling, meditation, conversations, personal development work, and learning new skills to keep your mind in tip-top shape. Likewise, you need to pay attention to your energy and how you spend it. There are certain things that will cost you more energy than others, even if those activities take the same amount of time. For example, it may take you less energy to read a book for an hour than it does to have a conversation with your mother for an hour. When you understand how you spend energy, you’re able to craft your days more intentionally so that you don’t overspend one day and rob yourself of energy for the rest of the week.

All of these things will strengthen your base so that when things go wrong, you have the best chance at handling them.

“Your reality is as you perceive it to be. So it is true, that by altering this perception we can alter our reality.” -William Constantine

Emergency catches

On top of having a solid foundation, you need practices in your toolbox that can catch you in an emergency. Those practices you can do when things hit the fan and you need help now. Our two favorite categories of emergency catches are grounding and breathing exercises.

If you haven’t taught yourself to consciously breathe, you’re likely a shallow breather. That means you breathe into your chest without inhaling fully. Proper breathing goes deeper into the belly, making the diaphragm move. This is how you properly oxygenate your blood, body, and brain. This matters because deep breathing can actually help you release stress, which promotes a healthier immune system. Breathing exercises like laying on your back, placing your hands on your lower abdomen, and breathing into your hands to push them away from you for a count of eight on the inhale, hold for four, and exhale for eight will help you develop deeper breathing habits.

Grounding exercises are also great in emergency situations. In times of trauma or stress, people can disassociate from their bodies. This means that the world may not feel real to you, it can seem as if you’re outside of your body, or you may not be experiencing reality as it truly is because of the disconnect from the feelings of your body. Things can go blank and your mind can refuse to focus. If you struggle with these things, grounding exercises can help you by bringing awareness back to your body. This is especially important to note if you find yourself in the space of needing to make a decision. Your body gives you information through your feelings. If you’re disconnected from your body, it becomes difficult to read those signs which can lead to making misaligned choices or having a skewed perspective. By grounding your body, you reconnect to its messages and can make better choices.

One grounding exercise is to sit comfortably and every part of your body that is touching the floor, imagine it growing roots into the earth. Imagine those roots pull in the nutrients and nurturing of the Earth’s pulse, as you bring your awareness to your breath. Feel what it’s like to breathe deeply into your belly. Pay attention to how your rib cage expands. Then consciously start to release any tension you feel in your feet, then your calves, then your thighs, and work all the way up your body. By putting your focus on your body, you bring yourself back to the present moment and fill up your vessel.

It’s important to remember that not everything needs a response now. Coming from a place of calm is better than operating from a place of fear or anger. If your emotions start tipping that way, these are powerful exercises to implement into your toolbox.

The daily energy practice that is often overlooked

There are powerful ways to shift and direct your energy. One of the most overlooked practices that you can implement is the power of the spoken word.

Your voice has resonance, which means that you can command your energy to focus in a specific way using your voice. Remember, your mind is the facilitator of body health. So when you take time in your day to take your thoughts and put them into spoken words to direct energy, you can create change.

For example, if you feel tired you can command energy to refill your energy levels. If you feel like there is negative energy in your space, you can command that energy to leave, and for the space to be filled with bliss and peace. Keep in mind that you must believe in what you are saying for this to change your reality.

This takes time and practice, and that’s okay. Results come from consistent action, and this spoken word energy clearing will create results the more often you use it.

Food is the foundation of how our body looks and feels from within. Therefore, what we eat directly affects how we look and feel. If you spend innumerable hours hitting the gym and still fail to see any significant results, maybe it is time to modify your diet.

Your diet plays a vital role in your overall fitness. A bad diet that lacks essential nutrients or contains excessive calories can hamper your health and fitness levels. Your fitness is 80% of your diet and 20% of your workout.

You cannot expect excellent results if you consume an unhealthy diet or starve yourself. It is true, lack of calories affects the way your body performs, too. Therefore, understanding your body and its needs is the first and the most crucial step in your fitness journey. Whether you want to lose weight or gain muscle mass, diet will help you achieve your fitness goal. People who eat healthy, well-balanced meals rich in all essential nutrients have significant fitness levels. They are fitter and leaner even though they do not exercise vigorously every day.

The human body needs food to function efficiently and at its best capacity. Starving or over-feeding your body will not only make it super unhealthy but can also lead to irreversible damage. For example, a car cannot function without gas; similarly, a workout without a good diet cannot help you achieve your fitness goals.

If you are someone who only concentrates on working out and takes their diet lightly, then this article is just for you. Read on to understand the importance and significance of a good diet that can make or break your overall fitness.

What is Fitness?

Many fitness professionals have defined fitness as 80% diet and 20% workout in the recent past. So what does this mean? The emphasis on diet and nutrition has never reduced ever since health and fitness have gained paramount importance.

The first set of questions that any person gets is, why is this formula true? We have many athletes who eat and work out hard and do not look unfit. To add to the confusion, our parents and grandparents say that they never used to think before they ate their food. Instead, they used to keep themselves physically active, and voila! They have fit bodies even at 80 years old.

So the big confusion for the current generation of fitness enthusiasts is, should we eat more or less? How much to eat while working out? Well, every industry has its professionals to talk to and release journals. Similarly, fitness has also had its experts, and we should always listen to them. They study about it or experiment with different things on their bodies before seeing the result they desire.

Yes, they are right. Fitness is all about how good your body works bio-mechanically, apart from the great looks a fit body can show. Moreover, food plays a vital role in supporting fitness.

Importance of Food in Fitness

First, let us understand what food provides us to keep ourselves healthy.

The food that we eat provides us with all the nutrients that help to keep our bodies intact.

Micronutrients like vitamins and minerals help in the normal functioning of the body parameters. Macronutrients like carbohydrates, proteins, and fats present in food are equally essential to provide us with energy, rebuild our tissues, take the nutrients to the bloodstream, and much more.

Food not only fills our stomachs or satiates our taste buds, but it provides nutrients for our body to perform better.

A solid and fit body consumes more nutritious food than its unfit counterpart does. Even if it means both people are hitting the same gym simultaneously and doing the same workout routine.

Fortunately or unfortunately, eating food ultimately works like an equation inside us, where the results show up on the body. The formula for how to fit a person is always about calories in vs calories out.

The experts measure food in terms of calories, which is the total addition of all the macronutrients consumed by one.,

An increase in fat accumulation is a clear indication of unfit bodies. It is always a result of excess calories that we consume.

Summary

Let us assume that one of our friends spends a good 3 hours at a fitness centre doing some of the best workouts on the planet. However, suppose this person ends his day at a bakehouse or a fast-food joint and consumes way more calories than he burned. In that case, he ultimately stores the excess food as fat.

Let us consider another scenario, and we have another fitness-conscious friend who spends a good 3 hours of his time. Additionally, he goes to the best fitness centre and has access to the best training available. Unfortunately, he ends up consuming way too few calories. The body does not show the best results because it does not have the micronutrients required to adapt to the intensity of training. Nor does he have enough calories to rebuild the broken tissues.

All these suggest that food is the primary reason why we look and perform fit or unfit. However, it can make or break your training days. The hard work you put into training can alter depending on how you consume your food.

The harsh reality of the food industry is every amazing-looking food on the counter out there with great taste is loaded with unwanted calories. But, on the contrary, all the healthy food that mother earth produces is full of all the essential nutrients we need.

So let us get smart, start consuming nutrient-dense food, and stay away from all those empty calorie-dense foods. These empty-calorie-dense foods can ruin all the hard work we do in our training.

That is why it is safe to say that fitness is about 80% diet and 20% workout, and this is why you cannot outrun a bad diet. So be smart and plan your fitness regime well, including a wholesome diet and some great workouts. Then, supplement your workouts with a good diet and see your body transform in no time.

Seltzer water is officially everywhere: It’s all over your social media feeds and on every store shelf in endless flavors. (Like your fizzy water with a kick? There’s a hard seltzer for that!)

But is seltzer water bad for you?

Let’s learn more about seltzer water and its potential effects on your body.

What Is Seltzer Water?

Seltzer water is water with added carbon dioxide.

The carbonation gives it a distinct fizz without adding any nutrition.

It goes by other names such as carbonated water, sparkling water, club soda, tonic water, or simply by brand name (#WhiteClaw).

Most of us tend to lump all carbonated water together, but for some, there is a distinction between seltzer vs. sparkling mineral water (think: Perrier).

Mineral water is taken from springs and contains natural carbonation, whereas store-bought seltzer water is artificially carbonated.

Also, seltzer water doesn’t contain minerals — calcium, sodium, and magnesium, to name a few.

While these minerals are helpful for human health, you can always get them through food.

Do Seltzer Waters Make You Gain Weight?

Short answer: No. Seltzer water won’t make you gain weight.

A small study did find that drinking seltzer water increased ghrelin, the “hunger hormone” in male rats.

According to Brittany Crump, M.P.H., R.D. at Savor Nutrition, “Seltzer water is a good alternative to soda if you’re watching your weight. This is particularly true if you crave soda and want a no-calorie, zero-sugar replacement to stay hydrated.”

By swapping soda for seltzer water, you can still enjoy the fizz without the extra sugar and calories.

Is Seltzer Good for You?

As far as nutrition goes, seltzer water offers similar benefits compared to plain tap water, including hydration.

Keep in mind that the carbonation in seltzer water affects us differently.

Some downsides: you might find it can cause gas and bloat or worsen heartburn.

On the other end of the spectrum, some people find that the carbonation in seltzer water actually improves digestion.

Is Seltzer Water Bad for You?

But what does seltzer water do to your body that can potentially be harmful?

Seltzer may be hard on your teeth

Seltzer water can potentially harm teeth:

The carbon dioxide in seltzer water makes it slightly acidic with a pH around 3 to 4, which can erode tooth enamel.

Keep in mind that water has a neutral pH of 7, and that tooth erosion happens at below a pH of 4.

If you’re sipping seltzer daily, it’s time to rethink how much you’re drinking.

Mineral water may be a better alternative since you still get the carbonation with a pH of approximately 5.

Crump adds, “There isn’t much nutritional difference between one brand of seltzer water and another, but they do contain varying amounts of added artificial flavors, acids, sodium, and coloring.”

Some of these additions, namely citric acid or phosphoric acid, can further drop the pH of the drink.

How to Choose Healthy Seltzer Water

When deciding which seltzer water brand to buy, always read the label to ferret out ingredients that you may want to avoid.

These include additives like artificial sweeteners, added sugars, or food coloring. Making your own seltzer water with an at-home carbonation machine is also an option.

To fancy up that fizz, try adding these to your drink:

Sliced fruit or vegetables

Strawberry

Orange

Lemon or lime

Cucumber

Herbs and other mix-ins

Rosemary

Mint

Sage

Extracts or bitters (e.g., grapefruit, peach, lavender, vanilla)

(Pro tip: Gently mix or muddle to release flavor.)

You can also jazz up your seltzer with these easy fizzy water recipes:

“To affect the quality of the day, that is the highest of arts.”
Henry David Thoreau

“Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant.”
Robert Louis Stevenson

Some days are great, better than you would have expected when you rolled out of the bed in the morning.

Quite a few days are just good and OK days.

And then we have the other ones. The days that just wind up being bad.

What do you do then? I used to let them drag me down and I often wound up having not just one but a couple of bad days because of whatever happened.

Nowadays I do things a bit differently. And this week I’d like to share how I do that.

Here’s 21 tips and habits that help me to turn a bad day around. Most of the time I use more than one of these habits to do that.

1. Breathe.

I usually start turning my day around with shaking things up by using my body in some way.

The first thing I almost always do is to just breathe. I breathe deeply through my nose by using my belly. I focus only on the air going in and out for 1-2 minutes.

This calms my body and mind.

2. Do a power pose.

Then I sometimes follow that up by striking what Amy Cuddy calls a power pose for about 2 minutes (check out her TED talk, it’s really good).

The simplest way to strike a power pose is to stand up confidently like Wonder Woman or Superman with your legs apart, head up and your hands on your hips.

It might sound odd but it can really change how you feel in a quick and positive way.

3. Work out.

Another habit I use several times a week to shake things up by using my body is to lift free weights in my home. I do this for about 30-40 minutes and it helps me to release tensions and worry.

And after I am done I feel more powerful, focused and energetic.

4. Hug.

Just by hugging someone quickly you can feel safer and more optimistic again.

And an embrace that lasts 30 seconds or a minute or more can recharge your batteries and release an unexpectedly large amount of stress and tensions.

5. Pet an animal.

If you don’t have anyone close by to hug during a bad day then pet your cat, dog, bird etc. It has a very similar calming and stress reliving effect.

And it makes your animal companion happy and that in turn will boost your mood too.

6. Find a new viewpoint.

The body tips above often work well to change my perspective by altering my emotional state and energy level.

Sometimes something more is needed though.

So I start looking more actively for a better and more helpful viewpoint on the situation at hand by asking myself a couple of questions.

Three of my most commonly used questions that help me with that are:

Will this matter 5 years from now?

Who cares?

What is one small action, one small and practical step I can take to start turning this day or situation around?

7. Go out into nature and enjoy the summer.

Leave your couch or workspace for a little while.

Talk a walk and just soak in the summer sun and warmth. Enjoy the birds singing and the nature blossoming.

Just being out there in nature tends to make it easier to think optimistically again and to start looking for practical solutions or upsides.

Or you can simply be there in the moment fully and let your thoughts about for example work rest for a while (and then later on you can return to that with fresh eyes and a calmer mind).

Another upside is that the sunshine and exercise during this 20-30 minute pause in my day also recharges my energy.

8. Accept what is.

One thing that sometimes work better than just about anything is simply to accept what is at this moment.

To not deny or try to push away negative feelings or thoughts that show up. Even though you may feel an impulse to do so.

Instead, just accept what is right now.

The thoughts and feelings within you.

And just be with them fully and observe them flowing through you.

By doing so you are not giving up.

No, because when you accept what is then you stop feeding the negative thoughts in your mind with more energy. And so they become weaker.

They start to lose their grip on you after a while and then they float away. And so you feel more open and are able to think more clearly again.

9. If you made a mistake then don’t let your inner critic take over.

If you’re having a bad day because of a mistake you’ve made or a failure you’ve had then don’t let your inner critic take over.

Instead, as soon as you hear it start berating you in your mind with negative thoughts about you and your worth do this:

Say a stop phrase. In your mind, say or shout, something like: Stop!

Or: No, no, no we are not going down this road again!

Then, after you have silenced your inner critic ask yourself this:

How would my friend/parent support me and help me in this situation?

Then simply do things and talk to yourself like he or she would.

This will help you to feel better again and to move forward to solve and improve upon the situation. And it’s a much better use of your time and energy than beating yourself up.

10. Tell yourself: Just for today!

I learned this one from Brian Tracy probably 10 years ago.

And in this case it can help you avoid falling back into those destructive responses to a bad day that may have become a bit of a habit for you.

So what you do is this, tell yourself that:

Just for today I will X!

And in this case you can replace that X with for example “not beat myself up about a mistake!” or “focus on solutions and action instead of procrastinating!”.

The nice thing about this one is that you only make a small commitment to do things differently today.

Then you can go back to your old ways tomorrow if you like. But you may not want to and perhaps you instead start building a positive spiral of positivity for the whole week.

Or you go back to your old ways sometimes and sometimes you use this tip to handle a bad day in a more constructive way (which is still an improvement compared to doing things the old way 100% of the time)

11. Get outside of your own head by adding positivity to someone else’s life.

One of the simplest ways to get outside of your own head and out of sinking deeper and deeper into your own negative thoughts about your day is to add positivity to someone else’s life.

That focus outward and on someone else can drastically shift your perspective around for the better.

You can for example:

Help someone out. With for instance moving houses, with planning for an upcoming job interview or by offering some advice that has helped you in a similar situation that your friend is in now.

Just listen. Sometimes people just want someone to truly listen for a little while as they work out their own situation and possible solutions.

Be kind. Give a genuine compliment for something that means a lot to the other person or something she does that is often taken for granted.

12. Take 5-15 minutes to read some motivational quotes.

This is something I quite often do to change my mood and viewpoint and to find some new motivation.

Here’s 6 of the my favorite and most popular posts about quotes that I have put together over the past 10+ years:

13. Journal about your day.

Writing down your thoughts and feelings about your day can help you to mentally step back a step or two from what is happening and to see things with more clarity (and from a wider perspective).

Doing this has helped me many times to not build a mountain out of a molehill and to start finding solutions to my current situation and or at least a small step or two that I can take to begin moving in the right direction.

14. Talk it over with someone to find that new perspective.

This is a bit similar to journaling and it’s in my experience one of the best ways to find a new perspective on a negative situation.

Because just letting your thoughts and feelings about your bad day bounce around in your head tends to exaggerate things and can make you feel more and more powerless.

But letting those emotions and thoughts out helps to vent all of that built up inner pressure and it allows you to start to either figure out the situation and what to do about it for yourself as your friend just listens.

Or the two of you can have a conversation about it and together come up with a plan – or the start of one – for what you can do to improve upon the situation you’re in.

15. Take a laugh break for 10-15 minutes.

Few things can so easily relieve stress and inner tensions and allow you to see things from a lighter perspective as laughing and having fun.

So I often take a laugh break and watch, read or listen to something that makes me laugh. Like for example a favorite episode of The Simpsons, a couple of online comics I like (such as the Oatmeal and Poorly Drawn Lines) or a bit of a standup show on Netflix.

16. Find something to look forward to.

Find something to look forward to or to reward yourself with after you have done what you need to do today, no matter if that is boring work or a doctor’s appointment that you’re nervous about.

Like for example that movie you’ve been looking forward to seeing coupled with your favorite take out food.

17. Take a shower.

My wife sometimes recommends this one to get a bit of a restart. And I often find that it works surprisingly well – considering how little effort it takes – to mentally reboot a day that has not begun well for me.

18. Clean up.

I find that taking a shower and then following that up with spending 5-10 minutes decluttering my workspace or home and organizing things makes me feel more in control again and more ready to start anew and take care of what I need to do to improve my current situation.

So try that combination or combine that shower with one of the other tips in this post to get an even better effect.

19. Tap into gratitude.

When you’re having a bad day or you’re in some kind of bad situation then you may get lost in only seeing the negative things in your life.

A way to counter that and to break out the pessimism that can suck out so much of your energy and trap you in inaction is to ask yourself a few questions that help you to tap into gratitude.

So ask yourself these 3 questions:

What are 3 things I can be thankful for in my life today?

Who are 3 people I can be thankful to have in my life and why?

What are 3 things I can be thankful for about myself?

These things don’t have to be big things. They could just be the nice weather, that you have access to clean drinking water, that you flossed today or that your friend made you laugh yesterday.

20. Look back and celebrate how far you’ve come.

Another thing that is easy to lose sight of when you’re down and you’re having a bad day is what you have actually accomplished so far.

The steps you have taken, the obstacles you have overcome and what you have learned.

Reflect on that when you’re having a bad day to find a wider perspective and to see that this one day is just a temporary step back and nothing more on your journey.

And take a few minutes to appreciate and celebrate what you have done so far to move yourself towards your goal or dream.

21. Remember: sometimes a bad day will just be a bad day.

Now, from time to time, even if you use several of the techniques above – one after the other – you won’t be able to turn a bad day around.

That has been my experience at least.

Because no matter what habits you adopt, life will never be perfect, positive or awesome all the time.

And this website was never about living some kind of life that only exists in a perfect dream anyway.

This website is about replacing unhelpful habits with better ones.

It is about raising the percentages of times where you can handle things in a better way. In your regular, everyday life. And when bigger things happen.

Because that will make a huge difference.

But still, life will have natural valleys.

And a bad day will sometimes just be a bad day. And that’s OK. That’s life.

But the interesting thing is this: if you accept that life is like this sometimes – and let go of the dream of perfection – then you’ll create less suffering for yourself and life will become lighter, simpler and happier.

So in the long run there is an upside even to a bad day that you may not be able to turn around.

No matter how seasoned a cook you are, you know that the right herbs and spices will enhance flavor.

But have you checked the expiration dates on your spice jars lately? Seasonings may look like they’ll last forever, but do spices go bad?

Do Herbs & Spices Really Expire or Go Bad?

Not really. According to the USDA, most pantry items can last for years, if not indefinitely, including dried herbs and spices.

Still, herbs and spices do have a shelf-life for freshness, even if they don’t appear spoiled.

Air, heat, and bright light can cause herbs and spices to lose flavor over time, and if that happens, they simply won’t work.

Can spices go bad and make you sick?

According to Brittany Crump, M.P.H., R.D.N. at Savor Nutrition, “Over time, herbs and spices will lose their flavor, but there’s a very low risk they will make you sick.”

Herbs and spices don’t go bad as milk or yogurt would.

Eating 25-year old curry powder won’t kill you, but that spiced chicken won’t taste or look quite right.

It’s tough to tell how long spices are good after the expiration date. But the longer you wait, the more flavor you lose.

Shelf-Life of Common Herbs & Spices

When should you throw out old spices? To get the maximum flavor out of your herbs and spices, use them before the “best by” date (if one is listed).

The type of spice — fresh, ground, or whole — affects how long they last.

Here’s a chart of the average shelf-life for common herbs and spices from Iowa State University:

Whole Vs. Ground Spice

In general:

Ground (dried) spices will last 2-3 years.

Whole spices will last 4-5 years.

You can apply this rule of thumb to:

Asian spices (ginger, star anise, lemongrass, etc.)

Indian spices (cardamom, garam masala, turmeric, etc.)

Mexican spices (annatto, chile, oregano, etc.)

Mediterranean spices (rosemary, thyme, sage, etc.)

Moroccan spices (paprika, nutmeg, Ras el hanout, etc.)

Other spices not listed above

While the strategy might work for the average palate, you might want to observe stricter “best by” dates if you have truly discerning tastes.

Some chefs or recipe sites recommend chucking ground spice after three months and whole spices after 10 months.

Salt is an exception. Table salt, kosher salt, sea salt, Himalayan — no matter which kind you like, you can store salt indefinitely.

Do Different Spice Brands Matter?

“The most important factor is the freshness of the spice, not the brand,” says Crump. Most spice companies will seal their spice jars to lock in the freshness.

Look at the “best by” dates before you buy because stale spices won’t do your dish justice!

Anti-Caking Additives

Some manufacturers use anti-caking agents to help preserve the freshness of their products.

Since caking is caused by moisture, these additives act to absorb or repel water and oil to prevent spices from clumping together.

One of the most common anti-caking food additives, silicon dioxide, is approved by the FDA for safe human consumption.

Not every spice brand uses anti-caking agents, but many do.

If you really want to avoid these additives, be sure to read the ingredients list on the label.

Tips to Enjoy Fresher Herbs & Spices

Now that we’ve answered the question, “Do spices go bad?” let’s look at some best practices. Herbs and spices can be expensive.

Here are top tips to get the most out of your culinary investment:

Buy whole spices instead of ground. You’ll have a longer window of opportunity to enjoy them. Invest in a spice mill or pestle to ground whole spices.

Don’t buy in bulk. Buy smaller quantities that you can use up in just a few months to a year.

Use air-tight spice jars. If your herbs and spices don’t come in a jar, use a glass mason jar or stainless steel container to keep air out.

Store in cool, dry places. Avoid direct sunlight or moisture, which can degrade the herbs and spices. “The convenience is tempting, but avoid storing your spices near your stove or any heat sources that generate humidity, which can cause spices to lose their freshness,” Crump adds. “I prefer to store mine in a cool, dry cabinet.”

There’s an old saying: If you find yourself standing in a deep hole with a shovel in your hands, stop digging. So if you’ve been gaining weight, but you haven’t been making any changes to your daily habits, you’re just digging yourself a little deeper into the hole every single day but still ask yourself “why is this happening?”

In fact, as much as you may guilt-trip ourselves over a couple of innocent indulgences—the decadent dessert you broke down and ordered, or the extra helping you served yourself of a pasta dish you finally mastered cooking—it’s not the occasional extravagances we should focus on. An extra 500 or even 1,000 calories a week isn’t going to make a dent on the scale.

Instead, it’s the little things you do, day in and day out, things that you barely notice you’re doing, that determine whether your waistline is trending outward or inward.

And that’s great news! Why? Because if you can suss out your own sneaky weight-gain habits, you can completely change your life without having to, well, change your life. That’s why we uncovered the bad habits that are the root causes of why you’re gaining weight. Tweak just a few of these everyday routines and you could be on your way to a flatter belly in no time! And you can start out on the right track by adding

It sounds crazy, but stop buying foods marketed as low-fat or fat-free, even weight-loss smoothies. The answer to “does fat make you fat” is “no.” Typically, low-fat products save you only a few calories. Only a few, you ask? It’s because food manufacturers replace harmless fats with low-performing simple carbohydrates that digest quickly—causing a sugar rush and, immediately afterward, rebound hunger. Researchers from the University of Alabama at Birmingham found that meals that limited carbohydrates to 43% were more filling and had a milder effect on blood sugar than meals with 55% carbohydrates. That means you’ll store less body fat and be less likely to eat more later.

Your favorite trail mix only has 150-calories, but did you check to see how much sodium is lurking inside the package? All too often, those who aren’t suffering from a health condition overlook that part of the nutrition label. “Americans consume, on average, about 50% more than the daily recommended intake of salt, and most of the excess sodium is coming from processed foods like frozen waffles, bagels, cheese cottage cheese, veggie burgers and salad dressings,” says Michelle Loy, MPH, MS, CSSD, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and owner of Go Wellness in Orange County, California.

Does salt make you fat? It’s not likely to cause fat gain, but salt will make you look fatter as it causes bloat. Sticking to The Institute of Medicine’s daily recommendation of 2,300 milligrams per day or less can help you keep a bloated belly, high blood pressure, and other health conditions at bay.
Adequate water intake is essential for all your body’s functions, and the more you drink, the better your chances of staying thin. In one University of Utah study, dieting participants who were instructed to drink two cups of water before each meal lost 30% more weight than their thirsty peers. And you can magnify the effect by adding ice. German researchers found that six cups of cold water a day could prompt a metabolic boost that incinerates 50 daily calories. That’s enough to shed five pounds a year! Weight gain isn’t the only repercussion of consistent dehydration, there are also 7 Side Effects of Not Drinking Enough Water.

According to Wake Forest researchers, dieters who sleep five hours or less put on 2½ times more belly fat, while those who sleep more than eight hours pack on only slightly less than that. Shoot for an average of six to seven hours of sleep per night—the optimal amount for weight control. And burn calories overnight with these 8 Ways to Lose Weight While You Sleep!

Although you may get scanned for high cholesterol or diabetes at your annual exam, doctors don’t typically test or look for physical signs of nutritional deficiencies—which can be dangerous! Loy suggests having your vitamin D levels checked if nothing else. “Many people are deficient and don’t even know it—and not getting enough may increase the risk of osteoporosis, heart disease, and certain types of cancer,” she warns.
If your body has one major flaw, this is it: It takes 20 minutes for your stomach to tell your brain that it’s had enough. A study in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association found that slow eaters took in 66 fewer calories per meal, but compared to their fast-eating peers, they felt like they had eaten more. What’s 66 calories, you ask? If you can do that at every meal, you’ll lose more than 20 pounds a year! Translation: More food, more calories, and more body fat. Keep your portions in check by choosing smaller serving dishes. If need be, you can always go back for seconds.

A University of Vermont study found that overweight participants who reduced their TV time by just 50% burned an additional 119 calories a day on average. That’s an automatic 12-pound annual loss! Maximize those results by multitasking while you watch—even light household tasks will further bump up your caloric burn. Plus, if your hands are occupied with dishes or laundry, you’ll be less likely to mindlessly snack—the other main occupational hazard associated with tube time.

Because when you order items bundled together, you’re likely to buy more food than you want. You’re better off ordering your food piecemeal.
Good news here: By reading this, you’re already forming habits that can help you shed pounds. When Australian researchers sent diet and exercise habits to 75 people, they found that the recipients began eating smarter and working more physical activity into their daily routines. Not surprisingly, the habits (and waistlines) of the non-recipients didn’t budge.

The average American guzzles nearly a full gallon of soda every week. Why is that so bad? Because a 2005 study found that drinking one to two sodas per day increases your chances of being overweight or obese by nearly 33%. And diet soda is no better. When researchers in San Antonio tracked a group of elderly subjects for nearly a decade, they found that compared to nondrinkers, those who drank two or more diet sodas a day watched their waistlines increase five times faster. The researchers theorize that the artificial sweeteners trigger appetite cues, causing you to unconsciously eat more at subsequent meals. There are immense benefits of giving up soda!

You manage to avoid sweets, which is pretty impressive—especially on super stressful days—but you’ve got to let off some steam somehow. If you don’t, it could lead to chronically elevated cortisol levels, causing sleep and immunity problems, blood-sugar abnormalities and weight gain. How should you chillax? Registered dietitian Lori Zanini, RD, CDE, says stress relief is very individualized, so what helps your BFF relax may not work for you. Give a few different tactics a try and see what works best for you. Practicing yoga, meeting up with friends and unplugging from technology for an evening are all things Zanini says are worth a shot.

If you’ve just hopped on the Paleo or low-carb bandwagon, proceed with caution! “Often diets that cut out entire food groups do not allow for the balance and moderation we need to follow a healthy, lifelong eating plan,” warns Zanini. “Plus, dieters who follow these plans may be prone to potentially dangerous nutritional deficiencies. Or they may simply get bored with their restricted plan and end up overeating down the road,” warns Zanini. To learn more, we put together a definitive guide to The Best & Worst Diets for Weight Loss.

A study from the University of Alabama found that emotional eaters—those who admitted eating in response to emotional stress—were 13 times more likely to be overweight or obese. If you feel the urge to eat in response to stress, try chewing a piece of gum, chugging a glass of water, or taking a walk around the block. Create an automatic response that doesn’t involve food and you’ll prevent yourself from overloading on calories.

Just because your meal is healthy doesn’t mean you don’t have to practice portion control. Remember, even virtuous foods have calories! Half of your plate should be filled with veggies and the remaining half should hold a cell phone-sized serving of lean protein, a fist-sized serving of grains, and a bit of fat no larger than the size of your pointer finger.

Shutterstock

Breadsticks, biscuits, and chips and salsa may be complimentary at some restaurants, but that doesn’t mean you won’t pay for them. Every time you eat one of Olive Garden’s free breadsticks or Red Lobster’s Cheddar Bay Biscuits, you’re adding an additional 150 calories to your meal. Eat three over the course of dinner and that’s 450 calories. That’s also roughly the number of calories you can expect for every basket of tortilla chips you get at your local Mexican restaurant. What’s worse, none of these calories comes paired with any redeeming nutritional value. Consider them junk food on steroids.

Let’s answer the question again: does fat make you fat? No! You know that eating trans fats can increase your risk of heart disease, weight gain, and stroke, so you’re smart to stay away. But not all fats need to make your “do not eat” list. Consuming healthy fats like flax seeds and nuts can actually help you slim down and stay healthy. “Fats not only help us absorb many of the vitamins from our diets, but they also help keep us fuller longer, which can aid weight loss efforts,” explains Zanini. She suggests consuming one serving of healthy fats each time you sit down to eat. This could be 1/4 cup of almonds or walnuts, some sautéed veggies cooked with a tablespoon of olive oil or a few slices of avocado.

You may think it’s beneficial for your hourly pay, or to prove yourself to your boss, but eating your lunch at your desk isn’t doing your waistline any favors. And you’re not the only one doing this. According to research conducted by the NPD group, roughly 62% of working American professionals dine “al-desko.” The issue is that you’re eating distractedly, which can cause you to consume up to 50% more calories than you intended, according to a 2013 review in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Instead, take a minute off from work and dine in the breakroom, at a nearby park, or even at a restaurant.

Do you always feel bloated after eating grains? Are you a dairy-lover but constantly feel congested? Many of us try to work through these problems, brushing them off our shoulders like they’re not an issue. But in reality, they might be signs of a food intolerance or allergy, which could be contributing to extra inflammation, a weakened immune system, and weight gain. Learn to listen to what your body tells you by keeping note of any discomforts in a food journal.

“Alcohol can make you drowsy, but it inhibits your ability to get quality deep sleep later at night. Ideally, don’t have any drinks 90 to 120 minutes before bedtime. This will allow enough time for your body to metabolize alcohol before your body transitions into the deep stages of sleep,” says Dr. Mike Roussell, PhD.

Before you can come “in with the new,” you have to go “out with the old!” Because researchers have found that people will reach for whichever food is closer—regardless of whether it’s an apple or popcorn—it would benefit you to get rid of any snacks that could derail your slim-down efforts. Don’t believe us? Well, how about this: a study by Cornell University researchers, found that women who have soda sitting on their countertops weigh an average of 26 pounds more, cereal an additional 20 pounds, and cookies about 8 pounds more compared to those with clean countertops. The lesson is clear: Throw your junk food in the junk bin to make better choices and lose weight. 40 Nutrition Experts Told Us The Foods You Should Be Eating Every Day, so you can replace that junk with these healthy eats!

Shutterstock

Just because you’re going to see a movie doesn’t mean you need to buy an extra-large popcorn. The same goes for that leftover food from the morning meeting that’s been placed in the breakroom. Just because it’s free—or because you’re bored—doesn’t mean you should eat. Whenever you see food that’s tempting you, ask yourself, “Am I actually hungry?” Test yourself by knocking back a cup of water and waiting 10 minutes. Around 60% of the time, people inappropriately respond to thirst by eating instead of drinking, according to a Physiology & Behavior study. It’s one of the reasons you’re always hungry.

Shutterstock

Yes, this bad eating habit goes for everything from sodas and alcohol to juice cleanses and bottled teas. That’s because beverages often lack healthy fats and fiber: two satiating nutrients that keep hunger pangs at bay. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that participants ended up drinking more (and thus consumed a greater number of calories) until they felt satisfied, compared to when they ate solid food.

There are several factors at play when it comes to satiety, and experts believe that both the sound and the physical act of chewing helps monitor your consumption; they think chewing will even increase satiety better than slurping. So, take a cue from a recent study published in the same journal—which found that thick smoothies made people feel fuller than a thin drink with the same amount of calories—by adding in a generous scoop of Greek yogurt and a sprinkling of crunchy nuts to your protein shakes in the mornings.

Shutterstock

No, it’s not because your metabolism slows down after this time—that’s a common food myth. But it is true that late-night eaters are more likely to gain weight compared to those who take advantage of the early bird special, according to a study published in the journal Appetite. It’s not because they don’t burn those calories as rapidly; it’s because these night owls are more likely to binge eat (after starving themselves since lunch) and subsequently choose unhealthy foods high in sugar and fat to quickly put in their rumbling tummies. Not only will these high-energy foods pack on the pounds, but many of them can make it harder to fall asleep. And if you didn’t already know, getting enough sleep is one of the answers to how to lose 10 pounds.

Shutterstock

When it’s time to order out, here’s our advice: order ahead of time. Like, right after you get in the office. Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania and Carnegie Mellon University found that when people ordered lunch more than an hour before eating, dieters chose meals with an average of 109 fewer calories than those who ordered immediately before lunch. The reasoning behind the saved calories? Your willpower to choose healthy meals rapidly deteriorates when your mind is distracted by a rumbling stomach that craves energy-dense food. Talk about being hangry.

Shutterstock

Chefs often add fat and salt to make meals taste better—but these ingredients aren’t necessarily something they advertise on the menu. Since you’ve already taken such care to choose a meal that sounds healthy, take the extra step and ask if there is any cream or butter in your dish. If there is, ask for your veggies and meats to be cooked dry and have sauces come on the side so you control how much ends up on your plate. After crunching the numbers, we discovered that no matter what kind of restaurant you’re dining at, you can save up to 1,000 calories at each meal by making this simple request!
