Breakfast can hands down be the most important meal you eat every day. The meal sets the tone for the rest of your day and can provide you with a way to eat healthy foods first thing in the morning. However, because breakfast is so important to the rest of your day, it can also derail your health goals depending on what type of breakfast you eat.

If you want to lose or manage your current weight, breakfast can be a helpful way to get the necessary nutrients in order to help you meet your goals. To learn more, we talked with Courtney D’Angelo, MS, RD, author at Go Wellness, about specific breakfast habits that are helpful for your waistline.

Shutterstock

Oftentimes people will be trying to lose weight without focusing on how much protein they’re getting in their day, but protein is one of the most important nutrients for your weight loss goals.

“Protein is essential for building muscle and reducing fat, and it’s one of my main recommendations for anyone who’s trying to lose weight, especially around the waistline,” says D’Angelo. “Consuming enough protein has shown to help you feel full longer, which is vitally important if you have a habit of snacking on more sweets or unhealthy snacks after breakfast.”

If you’re looking to add more protein to your breakfast, you could try foods like eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, or black beans, “or you could make a bowl of oatmeal and add in a scoop of your favorite whey protein,” says D’Angelo.

Many of the most beloved breakfast items come packed with added sugar, but this can, unfortunately, have a negative impact on our health goals if consumed on a regular basis. Because of this, D’Angelo suggests limiting your consumption whenever you can.

“People use sugar from their morning cup of coffee to eating pastries, donuts, or cereal as a breakfast meal, and too much sugar will make you want to consume more sugar throughout the day,” says D’ Angelo. “These sugary sweets, snacks, foods, or drinks also carry more empty calories, which can lead to weight gain, and a chance to develop type 2 diabetes.”

According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, it is suggested that adults consume no more than 50 grams of sugar daily, but ideally no more than 25 grams. If you can, maybe switch out a pastry for a slice of whole grain toast and your favorite nut butter.

Shutterstock

“I have a glass of water when I wake up and one with breakfast because water keeps you hydrated, which in turn provides more energy and the body will function more effectively,” says D’Angelo. “The benefits can be even greater for some people who replace a sugary beverage with water because they are automatically cutting back on sugar and calories.”6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

Drinking water before breakfast has been found to help reduce appetite, and one study found that water may help improve metabolism. It’s also important to drink enough water not just at breakfast, but throughout the day to help keep your digestion moving.

“If you eat toast for breakfast, you may want to stay away from white bread and switch to whole wheat bread,” says D’Angelo. “Evidence has shown that eating whole grains can decrease the calories retained in your body and increase your metabolism at the same time.”

Whole grains, which include wheat, barley, oats, and rice, also contain much higher levels of fiber than white bread since they haven’t been as heavily processed. Fiber can help digestion and keep you feeling full and more satisfied for longer periods of time.

So you want to lose weight, huh? No problem. Grab your grocery list. Whatever the length of your go-to list, we’re about to double it. That’s because when you pair certain foods together at the right time and during the right meals, you can supercharge your weight loss efforts more than simply eating one food alone.

The secret lies in making sure your meals contain satisfying nutrients like protein, fiber, and healthy fats. This one rule will set you up for success, preventing you from noshing on empty calories that do nothing to nourish your body (and which may even leave you hungrier than you were before eating).

And there’s no better time to double your weight loss efforts than during the first meal of the day: breakfast. Even better, it also happens to be the easiest. With so many healthy breakfast foods to choose from, we’re about to show you exactly which foods pair together perfectly to optimize your fat loss results.

Read on, and for more on healthy eating, don’t miss 7 Healthiest Foods to Eat Right Now.

Shutterstock

Avocados are famous for their healthy fat content, but did you know that this fruit is also an excellent source of fiber? Half an avocado contains 7 grams of fiber or 25% of your recommended daily value of the nutrient! That might be why a Nutrition Journal study found that when people added half an avocado to their lunch, it decreased their desire to eat by 40% in the three-hour period following the meal compared to people who didn’t have avocados with lunch. Pair it with salmon, a fish that’s rich in anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids and protein, and you’ll be well on your way to a healthier weight.

One of the 7 Amazing Benefits of Eating Oatmeal? It can help you lose weight. A Journal of the American College of Nutrition study found that when participants ate oatmeal for breakfast, they reported feeling more full, less hungry, had a lower desire to eat, and actually ate fewer calories at the next meal than those who ate cereal. Experts believe oatmeal’s hunger-busting properties are due in part to its high fiber levels, and a soluble fiber known as β-glucan, which has been found to slow the body’s digestion, helping you stay fuller longer. Add a couple of tablespoons of nut butter like peanut butter and you’ll add 8 grams of protein and healthy fats to double down on oatmeal’s satiating properties.

Shutterstock

Grab yourself a container of a high-protein yogurt like Greek yogurt or Icelandic yogurt and a container of berries to help lower the number on the scale. Yogurt consumption is associated with lower body mass index, lower body weight/weight gain, smaller waist circumference, and lower body fat, according to a comprehensive review published in the International Journal of Obesity. Berries are the perfect complement to this high-protein food. That’s because blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries are all rich in a class of antioxidants known as flavonoids, which studies have connected to weight maintenance. A BMJ study found that a higher intake of foods rich in these antioxidants may contribute to weight maintenance and the prevention of obesity.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

Shutterstock

Dump that bowl of cereal and crack a couple of eggs. Egg breakfasts have been shown to enhance weight loss when eaten in place of high-carb breakfasts like bagels, according to an International Journal of Obesity study. Season up your eggs with a few splashes of hot sauce. Researchers at Purdue University found that just half a teaspoon of red pepper was enough to reduce appetite and burn more calories after a meal. Scientists think capsaicin, the compound in chili peppers that gives them their heat, stimulates weight loss at a molecular level by altering key proteins found in fat.

Shutterstock

Increasing your fiber intake will do wonders for your weight loss goals. In fact, one study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that when participants increased their fiber by 4 grams per day over what they consumed before the study, on average, they saw an additional 3 ¼ pounds of weight loss over the course of six months. Perhaps the most incredible part of the study was that participants weren’t instructed to change anything else about their diets—just to increase fiber by 4 grams per day. One easy way to do that is by tossing a tablespoon of chia seeds into your morning smoothie. That’s right—a single tablespoon of chia seeds contains 5 grams of fiber, exceeding the amount of fiber the researchers found to be associated with an increase in weight loss. In addition to fruit, make sure to add leafy greens to your smoothies. Greens like spinach and kale are incredibly nutrient-dense and high in many essential vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals necessary to keep your body functioning at its best.

Pair those weight loss-supporting frozen berries with another fat-burning ingredient: protein powder. Studies consistently support that increasing the protein ratio of your diet—by reducing intake of refined carbs—along with reducing total calorie intake can support weight loss and have metabolic benefits.
We hear it all the time, “breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” But when it comes to choosing the right foods for breakfast, how can we know which ones are best for our health goals?

Even though breakfast is an important meal, certain breakfast habits may derail your weight loss goals without you realizing it. To learn more about healthier breakfast habits we can choose when trying to lose weight, we talked with a few expert dietitians to get their advice.

Continue reading to learn more, and for more healthy breakfast tips check out 5 Best High-Fiber Breakfasts When You’re Tired of Oatmeal.

Treating yourself to your favorite pastry or baked good every now and then is totally harmless, but getting in the habit of having one on a daily basis can possibly contribute to weight gain.

“Reaching for that pastry can be very tempting. They taste amazing and there’s usually a variety of choices that don’t seem to get old—until your clothes feel too tight. That’s because they’re loaded with sugar and sugar causes weight gain, especially around the stomach. You could also be putting yourself at risk of things like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, depression, skin aging, and acne. Instead, try grabbing a healthy snack such as a protein pop tart or any type of fruit,” says Courtney D’Angelo, MS, RD, a registered dietitian and author at Go Wellness.

You don’t have to drink your coffee black for it to be healthy, but it’s important to consider what you’re adding to your morning cup of Joe on a daily basis.

“Unhealthy creamers that we put in our coffee have added sugars and artificial flavors that can be detrimental to our belly area. On top of that, adding your own sugar with the creamer to your coffee will have double the effects. Too much sugar, especially at breakfast, can cause us to want more sugar throughout the day. It also slows down our metabolism, which won’t help us burn calories, provide the energy we need to exercise, or burn belly fat. Instead, try having your coffee black, or with alternative sweeteners. You can even add protein to your coffee, which would be an awesome habit replacement,” says D’Angelo.

RELATED: 7 Things You Should Never Add to Your Coffee

Shutterstock

Oatmeal is one of the healthiest meals you can have for breakfast, especially if you’re intentional with the type of toppings you add.

“Oats are high in carbs, which provide our bodies with energy. They also have protein, fiber, and fat as well – all essential nutrients we need if we’re trying to cut weight around the belly area. Both protein and fiber are excellent to help you feel full, resulting in less snacking between breakfast and lunch. Adding more protein to your oatmeal, like whey protein, can provide excellent weight loss benefits, as protein helps build muscle. Building muscle helps speed up your metabolism and ultimately burn calories, which burns fat,” says D’Angelo.

Shutterstock

Many people think that they have to get rid of grains in order to lose weight, but replacing refined grains with whole ones is more beneficial than getting rid of them altogether.

“Whole grains are rich in fiber and nutrients, whereas refined grains have been stripped of their vitamins, minerals, and fiber content, making them less filling. Whole grains also have more volume than refined grains so they stretch out your stomach better and make you feel fuller for longer periods of time. A few great options include oatmeal, brown rice, quinoa, and whole wheat breads/pastas,” says Janet Coleman, RD a registered dietitian with The Consumer Mag.

Shutterstock

And lastly, fitting a serving or two of veggies into your breakfast can help you throughout the rest of your day.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

“Vegetables are low in calories but high in fiber content, so they will help fill you up without adding too many extra calories to your diet. They also contain nutrients that can benefit your health overall (like vitamin C or potassium), which makes them worth including at every meal! Try adding vegetables to omelets or scrambled eggs instead of cheese or meat for an added boost of nutrition,” says Coleman.

Losing weight can be a tough journey at any age, but it’s important to note that it may become more difficult as you get older. For example, your metabolism begins to shift as you age, which plays a large role in how you lose and manage your weight loss goals.

If you’re in your 50s and looking to lose weight, one of the first things you can make sure you’re doing is eating a healthy breakfast! This truly is the most important meal of the day, and it will set you up for success throughout the rest of the day. Getting enough protein, fiber, and healthy fats in your first meal of the day can help you meet your weight loss goals in your 50s.

One of the most common breakfast staples, eggs are great for starting your morning off in a healthy way!

“Eggs contain protein and fat, both helping you curb your appetite throughout the morning and likely the day. Research suggests that those that eat 25 to 30 grams of protein in the morning are often satisfied with less later in the day. Pair eggs with a fiber carbohydrate like whole-grain toast or oats for a well-rounded breakfast,” says Amy Goodson, MS, RD, CSSD, LD author of The Sports Nutrition Playbook and member of our expert medical board.

Greek yogurt is one of the healthier yogurt options on grocery store shelves because it usually comes with more protein and less added sugar.

“High in protein, Greek yogurt provides around 14 to 18 grams of protein for 6-ounces, depending on the brand. It also contains calcium and probiotics, which are essential for optimal health. Have a yogurt parfait, add it to whole-grain waffles or blend it into a smoothie for a protein-packed breakfast,” says Goodson.

Shutterstock

Oatmeal is a win in every way. It provides fiber that can keep you full, help with your digestion, and even help you manage your heart health. Not only that, but it can help with your weight loss goals as well.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

“I’m a firm believer in hitting your daily protein goals. If you’re looking to get rid of belly fat, then eating enough protein is very critical to your success,” says Courtney D’Angelo, MS, RD, author at Go Wellness. “You should aim to consume the same grams of protein in relation to your weight goal (if you want to be 140 pounds, you should aim to eat 140 grams of protein every day). Protein has many health benefits, and one of them is that it helps get rid of fat and build lean muscle. Oats are high in fiber, which will slow down digestion and keep you feeling full for longer, which in turn will prevent overeating throughout the day.”

Shutterstock

Nut butter on its own wouldn’t be enough for breakfast, but it can be a great addition to many types of meals.

“Adding natural nut butter to your toast, oatmeal, or parfait can add some healthy fats and plant-based proteins that can help support satiety, which could possibly help you combat hunger pangs and take in fewer calories in the long run,” says medical board expert Lauren Manaker, MS, RDN, author of The First Time Mom’s Pregnancy Cookbook and Fueling Male Fertility.

Shutterstock

And lastly, while not technically a food, green tea is packed full of health benefits—including helping to manage weight.

“Sipping on green tea can be a nice addition to your breakfast. As long as caloric sweeteners aren’t added, green tea can support weight management thanks to the natural compounds it contains,” says Manaker.

Though the adage coined by American nutritionist Adelle Davis about how one should: “Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper” comes with caveats these days, Davis’ primary point is still heeded by nutrition experts. That point is, namely, breakfast is important and there will be some side effects if you’re skipping it regularly.

When you start your day with a balanced breakfast—one that has plenty of protein, healthy carbs, and the right mix of vitamins and minerals—your body tends to work at its best. Essentially, you set yourself up for ideal physical health, mental acuity, and stable energy levels.

On the other hand, when you skip breakfast, you may be inviting in a host of problems in both the short term and long term. Here are some side effects you may not know about skipping breakfast.

RELATED: Eating Habits to Lose Abdominal Fat As You Age, Say Dietitians

You know how you can delay eating for hours on some days without feeling all that hungry, but if you have even a little morsel of food, you suddenly feel famished for more? That’s because eating revs up your metabolism for the day, according to a study in The Journal of Nutrition. They concluded that eating breakfast as the largest meal of the day prevented weight gain.

And starting it up early is a good thing, as your body is most efficient at secreting insulin, digesting food, and other processes early on in the day after a good night of rest. Delaying eating means delaying starting up these healthy processes and therein reducing their efficacy at subsequent meals.

A healthy breakfast can not only give you the energy and nutrients your body needs to launch itself into the day, but it can also stabilize blood sugar levels to stave off feelings of hunger and associated irritability throughout the day, says Mary Stewart, RD, LD, founder of Cultivate Nutrition, in a recent Yahoo article. By not eating breakfast you could be setting yourself up for failure later in the day, making it harder for you to make healthier choices due to blood sugar fluctuations.

Shutterstock

Studies overwhelmingly find that eating a majority of one’s daily calories in the morning is the best way to shed pounds or maintain a stable weight, reports Life Hack. On the other hand, eating larger meals closer to bedtime is correlated with gain weight.

And the same can be said for eating a number of smaller meals and snacks later in the day, too: it’s far better to do the bulk of your eating early. A study at San Raffaele Rome Open University concluded that timing was. even more important than what was being eaten. The study of 18 women showed that those who consumed most of the day’s calories in the first half of the day lost more weight and had improved insulin sensitivity.

Shutterstock

The stronger and more energized your body, the stronger and more energized your immune system. A healthy breakfast can foster a robust, healthy immune response when you come into contact with any manner of bacteria or virus. As we previously reported, “Periods of fasting appear to trigger damage to the cells and the body needs to be fed food regularly in order to maintain healthy levels of immune cells that fight infections and improve the action of fighter cells (T-cells) in the body,” explained Tehzeeb Lalani, a nutritionist with Scale Beyond Scale.

Shutterstock

You can file this one in both the “decidedly unexpected” and “definitely unwelcome” columns, but habitually skipping breakfast can lead to hair loss, says The Health Site. That’s because an insufficient infusion of protein in the morning curbs your body’s ability to produce keratin, the building block of your hair (and nails). Without a protein-rich breakfast in the morning, you may well, be leaving more hairs on the pillow at night, and growing less to replace them.

Shutterstock

A study of women 18-45 years old showed increased cortisol levels among breakfast skippers. Cortisol is often called the “stress hormone,” says the Mayo Clinic. And while cortisol can be a vital natural chemical, increasing glucose content in the bloodstream and enhancing your energy levels, sense of awareness, and even your body’s ability to repair damaged cells, an excess in everyday life can leave you feeling fatigued, irritable, confused, depressed, and, quite simply, stressed.

“By having breakfast, you refill the liver glycogen levels so that the cortisol levels can decrease. If you don’t eat breakfast, then cortisol levels will continue to increase to maintain blood glucose levels eventually causing insulin resistance that makes you more hungry throughout the day,” said Dr. Barry Sears, president of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation, in a previous article.

Shutterstock

Do you often suffer intense headaches in the afternoons? It could be the fact that you’re not eating a proper breakfast. According to Tata Health, when you forgo breakfast in the morning, you invite in hypoglycemia later, and this is a biological process wherein blood sugar levels drop and blood pressure increases. And, this sudden elevation in blood pressure can cause debilitating headaches.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

According to Life Hack, it takes a good three hours for a human body to digest foods, so if you compensate for a skipped breakfast at the start of the day with a larger-than-usual dinner at the end of the day, you will almost surely go to bed with undigested or semi-digested food in your system. And that can lead to discomfort and bloating, interrupted sleep, acid reflux, and perhaps even some odd dreams, reports News.

There are all sorts of acute problems caused by skipping breakfast, such as headaches and sugar cravings but the insidious side effects of missed morning meals can have much larger, longer-term effects on your health as well. In fact for some people, habitually skipping breakfast can dramatically increase the likelihood of the development of Type 2 diabetes. Chronically increased insulin resistance and hormone imbalances caused by improper breakfast practices are the culprits.

How to Build a Balanced Breakfast

High Fiber Carbs. Carbohydrates are your body’s preferred energy source. High fiber carbs like oats, fruit, whole grain bread, quinoa, oat bran and whole grain waffles/pancakes provide you with nutrients that support digestion and balance blood sugar levels for sustained energy.

Quality Protein. Adding protein to your breakfast helps to keep you feeling fuller for longer and can support optimal metabolic function. Protein is also important for maintaining lean muscle mass. My top protein sources for breakfast are eggs, greek yogurt, cottage cheese, turkey sausage, smoked salmon, tofu, beans, protein powders and high quality protein bars.

Healthy Fats. Fats are an essential nutrient that support nutrient absorption, hormone function and provide satisfaction when eating. For breakfast, the best fats to choose are avocados, nut butter, nuts (almonds, walnuts, cashews), seeds (like chia, flax, sunflower or hemp) or cooking oils like avocado or olive oil.

A Boost of Color. This means adding in a variety of fruits and veggies. The more color you have in your day, the better. Most people opt for fruit in the morning, which is fine, but if you can sneak some veggies in too, that’s great! For example, try a fruit and veggie smoothie, an omelet with veggies or savory oatmeal.

Now that we have the formula, let’s review some ideas. One of my favorite go-to breakfast options lately is a yogurt bowl topped with my favorite protein bar, Zing Bars. Check out the recipe below:

Trying to plan the perfect breakfast is easier said than done, especially when you want to burn fat. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, dieters should try to target visceral fat, which builds up around your abdominal cavity and correlates to higher risks of heart disease, insulin resistance, and other serious conditions. Eating too much saturated fat can lead to an increase in visceral fat, and knowing exactly how to target it can help you feel better in the long run.

Diet and exercise both help reduce this type of fat which prominently gathers in one’s abdominal area. By tackling visceral fat with breakfast, you can hit the day running and start reducing this harmful substance from the get-go.

When it comes to the best breakfast, dieters might wonder if they should greet the morning with a breakfast smoothie, try to prepare a massive meal, or find a balance in between. Luckily, we asked a handful of dietitians to find out exactly how breakfast can help burn visceral fat.

While breakfast can help jumpstart this process, make sure to include some other Surefire Ways to Lose Visceral Fat into your lifestyle to burn that stubborn belly fat regularly.

Shutterstock

You may have heard that a glass of water in the morning helps jumpstart your metabolism for the day, but you might not know that this simple drink can get you burning visceral fat in the morning.

“A breakfast routine is a good way to kick-start healthy habits for the day,” says Blanca Garcia, RDN Nutrition Specialist of HealthCanal. “Choosing to drink water first allows your body to rehydrate after hours of being on a fast. This also gets your stomach juices ready for the food to come.”

“Choosing breakfast foods that are high in fiber will help reduce the amount of sugar and fat that is absorbed and spare you the storage of visceral fat,” says Garcia. “Fiber-rich foods can be found in vegetables and whole grains with more than 5 grams of fiber per serving.”

“When eating breakfast, add vegetables to your meals, pre-cut vegetables, or use leftover vegetables to add at breakfast time for time-saving.”

Shutterstock

Oatmeal has stood the test of time as a breakfast staple, and it turns out that this morning option can help you burn a ton of fat in the long run.

“Opting for a whole grain and protein-filled breakfast can help reduce fat by keeping you feeling full for longer,” says Trista Best, RD at Balance One Supplements. “This will prevent overeating throughout the morning and gives you a nutrient-dense breakfast rather than a calorie-dense one.”

“Oatmeal is an excellent breakfast to replace your refined carbohydrate-laden breakfast pastries. Oats are an excellent source of whole grains and contain plenty of fiber and nutrients that make them a healthy meal or snack,” Best continues. “However, many of their benefits are often negated with excessive sugar and calorie-dense toppings and mix-ins. Healthy oatmeal can be made either savory or sweet without excess calories. Some of the best toppings and mix-ins for oatmeal include nuts, cinnamon, blueberries, strawberries, and bananas. Savory oats can be made healthy by adding tomatoes, eggs, mushrooms, and spinach.”

Keeping an eye out for particular toppings can seriously affect how much visceral fat you burn.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

“Maple syrup, brown sugar, dried fruit, and chocolate are toppings that can make [for] an unhealthy meal,” says Best. “It is best to exchange these ingredients for nutrient-dense varieties.”

It might feel tempting to heat up some microwavable pancakes or breakfast sausages, but these items can’t help you burn visceral fat in the morning.

“A lot of people tend to have convenient or fast foods for breakfast,” says Julia Glanz, RD at living.fit. “Break that habit and make an effort to prepare yourself a healthy breakfast. There are quick grabs you can choose like fruits and yogurt, oats with lean proteins, or make smoothies.”

Make sure to stick to whole foods and avoid as much added sugar and fat as possible. When in doubt, whip up one of 30 Nutritionist-Approved Healthy Breakfast Ideas for a great way to start the day.

Choosing the right breakfast to kickstart your morning can be tricky—especially if you don’t know what healthy breakfast to reach for. And while it’s convenient to grab something on the go, or to even skip the meal altogether, these factors can be roadblocks to your goal of trying to slim down. Nevertheless, numerous dietitians say breakfast is a crucial meal for weight loss, so it’s important you try to add it into your day.

If you’re at a loss for what to make in the mornings, we spoke with members of our medical expert board, The Nutrition Twins, Tammy Lakatos Shames, RDN, CDN, CFT, and Lyssie Lakatos, RDN, CDN, CFT, to give us some healthy and nutritious options that will help get the ball rolling on your weight loss journey. Then, for more helpful tips, check out these 25 Healthy Breakfast Habits to Jumpstart Weight Loss.

Thanks to the Greek yogurt, eggs, and either low-fat cottage cheese or ricotta, this breakfast pulls out all the high-protein stops to jumpstart weight loss.

“Getting adequate protein helps to keep appetite in check by balancing hormones,” say The Nutrition Twins. “Whole-wheat flour and wild blueberries add fiber for even longer-lasting fulfillment.”

An added bonus is that the wild blueberries pack in antioxidants that play a crucial role in the battle against inflammation– something that makes weight loss harder, the Nutrition Twins point out.

In most cases, pancakes can contribute more calories than you need while eating both breakfast and lunch combined. However, these particular pancakes serve up the ideal macronutrients for weight loss full of satiating protein and fat.

This breakfast is key for keeping yourself full with few calories. A huge part of jumpstarting your weight loss is preventing hunger (and the overeating that comes with it) with minimal calories.

So, what is the “most satisfying weight loss breakfast?” It’s only 4 ingredients; cinnamon, berries, whole grains, and eggs!

“The combination of naturally sweet cinnamon, which has been shown to reduce body weight and belly fat, helping to prevent against obesity—[as well as] antioxidant-rich, low-calorie berries, which have been shown as a possible treatment for obesity-induced inflammation—provide sweetness without the need for inflammation-promoting sugar that makes weight loss more difficult,” say The Nutrition Twins.

Also featured in the breakfast are whole grains that satisfy carb cravings without overdoing it on calories, and protein-packed eggs that contribute to the satiety benefits.

A study in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition even showed that when the subjects ate eggs for breakfast (versus equal-calorie breakfasts that contained either cereal or croissants), they ate fewer calories over the entire day. Plus, studies have found that breakfasts that include eggs may help control hunger for 24 hours.

Who said you couldn’t have “dessert” for breakfast? Any breakfast that is nourishing and healthy, yet feels like a decadent dessert, immediately has a leg up in the weight loss department. This sweet, creamy breakfast that feels like a treat won’t leave taste buds wandering. It also helps to prevent the deprivation that leads to falling off the healthy eating path.

“Yogurt consumption is associated with smaller waists, lower body weight, body fat, and body mass index,” say The Nutrition Twins. “Greek yogurt has extra protein for an additional satisfaction benefit.”

Additionally, with three different types of berries in this breakfast, it helps fight obesity since higher amounts of fruit have been found to reduce weight and promote a healthy lifestyle, including increasing physical activity and reducing the intake of sugar and fat.

This recipe really helps execute the weight loss goal, as it’s the perfect recipe for those in a rush.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

“Many weight-loss hopefuls get derailed when they’re in a hurry at breakfast and quickly choose a calorie-bomb, fatty, fast-food breakfast,” say The Nutrition Twins. “This throw-in-the-blender-and-go recipe has all the makings to set you up to start your weight loss day with success.”

The smoothie contains a high protein-to-calorie ratio, meaning it gives you a lot of satisfaction and fullness for a relatively small number of calories. It’s rich in water and potassium to help restore normal fluid balance and helps flush any bloat from excess salt or sugar.

The blueberries’ antioxidant cyanidin-3-glucoside (C3G)–a phytochemical that has been shown to lessen appetite while enhancing fat metabolism–decreases hunger by increasing leptin, the hormone that helps to regulate energy balance by inhibiting hunger. While doing so, it also increases adiponectin–a hormone your fat tissue releases that helps with insulin sensitivity and inflammation.

The Nutrition Twins also recommend adding a liberal amount of lemon because it contains potent polyphenols–micronutrients that naturally occur in plants–that may help to suppress body fat accumulation and prevent obesity.

Get the recipe from The Nutrition Twins.

Mitch Mandel and Thomas MacDonald

Another great breakfast meal for weight loss, each serving calls for two full eggs, which rates very high on The Satiety Index List – a tool that ranks different foods on their ability to satisfy hunger.

“The less hungry you are, the less likely you’ll be to overeat, so it will be easier to lose weight,” say The Nutrition Twins.

They also point out that the amino acid, asparagine, in the asparagus acts as a natural diuretic—a water pill that will immediately help you to lose excess water weight and bloat.

Salmon is an omega-3 rich fatty fish that fights against obesity-promoting inflammation and may have additional weight loss and belly fat-busting benefits.

“Replace smoked salmon with fresh salmon to reduce carcinogens, as well as sodium, that can contribute to water weight gain,” say The Nutrition Twins.

There are two types of people in the world: those who go to bed thinking about what they’re going to eat for breakfast, and those who don’t. And for those breakfast-lovers out there, they know that what they choose to eat can either make or break their morning.

If you’re a breakfast lover who is also trying to lose weight or stick to a similar type of health goal, finding healthy breakfast food that you can still get excited about can sometimes be a challenge.

The key to choosing breakfast foods to lose weight, especially around your abdominal area, is making sure you get enough protein. For example, a great way to start your day is with some eggs and avocado on whole-grain toast, or Greek yogurt with berries and nut butter.

But what about certain foods that you should avoid if you’re trying to lose belly fat? According to Trista Best, MPH, RD, LD at Balance One Supplements, one breakfast food that you may want to limit or avoid when trying to lose abdominal fat are breakfast pastries.

Continue reading to learn more about how refined carbs like breakfast pastries can derail your weight loss goals, and for more healthy eating tips, check out Best Eating Habits to Shrink Belly Fat.

Why you should avoid breakfast pastries if you want to lose belly fat.

Shutterstock

“Breakfast pastries like processed and pre-packaged toaster pastries, donuts, and even some meal replacement bars can be stalling your weight loss efforts, especially because weight gain around the belly is easily exacerbated by a diet containing refined carbohydrates and sugar,” says Best.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

While eating a decadent, fluffy pastry in the morning can be satisfying in the moment, Best warns that there really isn’t much nutritional value to them at all, which may be detrimental to your health goals over time.

“These pastries are calorie-dense and loaded with ingredients that will lead to inflammation, glucose spikes, and subsequent crashes, as well as only temporary relief from hunger,” says Best, “and this may lead to overeating on other foods soon after consuming breakfast pastries with little to no valuable nutrients.”

Best also points out that eating foods that are low in nutritional value, especially in the morning hours, can “leave you feeling hungry and fatigued throughout the rest of the day.”

The link between refined carbs and belly fat

While refined carbohydrates like breakfast pastries can have an immediate impact on your glucose levels and energy, they can also contribute to more belly fat over time if consumed on a regular basis.

For example, one study recently published in The Journal of Nutrition found a connection between regular consumption of refined carbohydrates and more weight around the abdominal area. This same study also found that replacing refined carbohydrates with whole grains could help improve abdominal weight gain, as well as lower your risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

You certainly don’t have to avoid breakfast pastries forever, especially if eating them brings you joy in the morning. However, Best suggests making some adjustments in how you consume them.

“Breakfast pastries should be limited to occasional consumption and replaced with nutrient-dense foods that will fuel your body and set you up for success,” she says.

On the mornings when you do treat yourself to a muffin or a donut, try pairing it with a healthy breakfast food with plenty of lean protein like eggs or low-sugar Greek yogurt.

It’s another day on your healthy weight loss plan—so what are you gonna eat? There are tons of healthy breakfast foods, and depending on the diet you’ve chosen, your ideal breakfast might look different from someone else’s. People on a low-carb, high-fat keto diet might reach for a salmon and egg frittata, while those on a high-fiber plan may want to load up on berry-filled oatmeal, for example.

As a nutritionist, I say it’s best to follow the menu-planning guidelines of whatever weight loss plan you’ve chosen. But for a healthy, pro-weight loss breakfast anyone can enjoy, you can’t go wrong with a nutrient-rich breakfast burrito.

I don’t mean any old breakfast burrito! Some can be total calorie bombs, filled with high-fat meats and cheeses (and nary a veggie in sight), then wrapped in a refined flour tortilla. The key to creating a more weight loss-friendly Mexican breakfast is to reimagine it with healthier ingredients, such as a low-carb, whole wheat tortilla, eggs, sauteed spinach, and a sprinkle of cheese. (For more inspiration, check out these 20 easy burrito recipes for weight loss.)

Shutterstock

You’ll start with a whole wheat tortilla—which, believe it or not, doesn’t have to mean an inflexible, carboard-like wrap. Many whole wheat flour tortillas actually have plenty of stretch. My personal favorite is the Xtreme Wellness High Fiber tortilla from Olé Mexican Foods. Not only does it have good elasticity for wrapping, but it also contains just 50 calories, 4 grams net carbs, and a whopping 11 grams of fiber. Research shows that diets high in fiber (such as about 30 grams per day) can boost weight loss. Here, a single tortilla can get you more than one-third of the way to that daily goal.

Next, scramble up some eggs. These humble breakfast foods are packed with protein at 6 grams each—so if you decide to scramble three of them for your burrito, you’ll clock in at 18 grams total. Getting plenty of protein keeps you full and helps you build muscle, so it’s a one-two punch for weight loss.

Once your eggs are almost cooked, it’s veggie time! Toss a generous handful of spinach into your pan and cook until wilted. Even if you add two full cups (about 50 grams) of fresh spinach, you’ll only increase your burrito’s calorie count by 14 calories, and will add a smidge of extra protein and fiber, to boot. Plus, cooking spinach allows your body to absorb extra minerals from it, like calcium and iron.

Because weight loss is your goal, your first instinct might be to reach for a low-fat cheese for your burrito’s finishing touch—but the latest research shows you don’t have to sacrifice the tasty goodness of dairy fat to drop pounds. In fact, a 2013 review found that not only were high-fat dairy foods not associated with weight gain, but they were also linked to greater weight loss. A tablespoon or two of shredded cheddar or mozzarella is a great way to get full-fat dairy in your morning meal. (And it tastes delicious, too!) Wrap the whole thing up and pat yourself on the back—you’ve just made a tasty, on-the-go breakfast to fuel your day.
