Leading a team is rewarding work, but it can also be challenging. Your mental health may be shaky after dealing with management stress. These are a few mental health tips for managers experiencing burnout who need new tools to find more balance in their lives. You can use these ideas to find your way back to inner peace without compromising your professional responsibilities.

1. Save Five Minutes For Yourself

Managing people often means that team leaders give all their time and energy to the workplace. When it’s time to go home, you may not get to recharge because you have to continue giving your energy to your family.

Start saving five minutes for yourself at some point throughout each day. Whether you sit by yourself while drinking coffee or relax with a book before bed, you’ll get a few minutes to recharge and feel rested for tomorrow.

2. Learn How To Delegate

It’s tempting to attempt to handle everything when you’re a manager. People look to you for all the answers. The pressure might make you want to prove yourself by taking on more responsibility than your mental health can handle. That’s when it’s time to start delegating.

There are a few signs you can delegate work that you might currently miss. Reflect on your workload and see if these factors apply to your job:

Someone else has the experience to lead a project.

Specific work could help one of your team members grow.

Your schedule can’t accommodate more recurring work in a healthy way.

Discuss potentially delegated work with your team to decide who can handle which responsibilities. Give them a period of trial and error to figure things out. If they can’t shoulder the work well, you can always delegate it to someone else. Your mental health is more important than pretending you can be a superhero with your workload.

3. Form Better Work Relationships

Sometimes burnout occurs when managers don’t know their team members personally. When people know their supervisors well, it facilitates a greater sense of trust that improves the workplace. Your leadership will become more effective because you know how to help everyone thrive. In return, your team will trust your decisions and follow you anywhere.

4. Take Work Breaks

What happens when you can’t delegate your responsibilities or change your daily routine? Your stress may stem from a lack of workday breaks.

You don’t need to split your lunch break into segments and spend it throughout your day. Put everything on pause and take a deep breath using the Pomodoro technique. Every 25 minutes enjoy a five-minute break before diving back into your work. The technique’s creator found that it improved his overall productivity because he felt better after returning from short breaks.

5. Find A New Hobby

Hobbies are always a good outlet for pent-up stress causing your burnout. Find a new activity that you can enjoy after work. Knitting, painting and even exercising will release any anxiety caused by your job. You’ll walk away from your hobby feeling restored and even get to know yourself more profoundly.

6. Eat A Healthier Diet

Stress affects people in more ways than their mental health. It also affects your physical health. Use your diet to combat burnout by eating more nutritious meals and snacks. Research shows that individuals who eat whole foods like vegetables, white meat and fruit experience less daily stress than others who eat processed foods. The processed ingredients increase cellular inflammation, intensifying symptoms of burnout by increasing your physical stress.

Improve Your Mental Health Today

Consider these mental health tips for managers experiencing burnout when you’re ready to make positive changes. Stress doesn’t have to ruin your professional life or make you feel disconnected from who you are. Simple things like delegating, eating healthier foods and even connecting with your team members will make you happier and a more efficient manager.

Are you feeling run down and exhausted? Do you find it difficult to concentrate or make decisions? If so, you may be experiencing the early signs of burnout. Burnout is a condition that can occur when you are overworked and stressed out. It can lead to physical and emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and feelings of detachment from your work. If left untreated, burnout can have serious consequences for your health and wellbeing. This blog post will discuss how to listen to your body and recognize the signs of burnout.

1. Listen To Your Body

Even if you love your job, it can become stressful at times. You might have a full calendar with meetings, deadlines and time-intensive projects that add more responsibilities than you know how to juggle. When the pressure gets too extreme, you may suffer from feeling burnt out. These are a few healthy ways to cope with stress at work and avoid burnout that saps your joy.

1. Step Away From Your Desk

People often put pressure on themselves when they get sucked into their work. It might seem like if you didn’t keep up the pace, the world would fall apart. When that happens, step away from your desk. A ten-minute break won’t cause everything to fail. Stepping away gives you a moment to breathe and collect yourself, then return to your work with a renewed perspective.

2. Eat A Healthy Snack

Burnout is more likely to happen when your body gives way to stress. Fueling it with sugary breakfast bars or iced coffees doesn’t provide the nutrition you need to cope with high expectations or long workdays. Consider your current diet and bring healthy food to work so you can snack between meals and keep your energy up.

3. Break Your Goals Down

Everyone chases big goals, but that can leave you with days, weeks or months that don’t seemingly make any progress. Feeling stuck magnifies burnout symptoms, so break your work into micro-goals to manage your anxiety. Checking things off your to-do list will instill more confidence in your career and your role in the workplace.

4. Identify Your Daily Triggers

It’s challenging to sort through burnout symptoms when you’re not sure what causes them. Start writing a quick journal entry each evening. Reflect on them after a week to identify your daily stressors and more accurately find burnout coping strategies. Episodic stressors might only need a quick fix, like a walk during your break, while you can solve time stressors by rethinking your schedule.

5. Learn To Say No

You might feel like turning down responsibilities or delegating work could make you seem like an ungrateful employee. Even though it’s important to learn new skills and contribute to your team, taking on too much will lead to burnout.

Learn to say no by rationalizing why saying no is best and explain yourself when you have to hold back from new opportunities. You’ll have more peace of mind by pacing yourself and apply your work more wholeheartedly to what’s already on your plate.

6. Schedule Time To Organize

Visual clutter can add to the mental mess that often contributes to exhaustion, irritation or feeling like you have nothing else to give. Look at your upcoming schedule and add a few minutes to organize whatever’s causing you stress.

You could clean up your desk and rearrange folders so they’re easy to sort through. Your inbox might need a few new folders and a hefty trip to the digital trash can. Even organizing the folders on your desktop screen will streamline your work. Making everything feel easier by saving time is a great way to cope with stress at work and avoid burnout.

7. Listen To Background Music

Think about the last time you walked a local trail or sat on the beach. The environment brought you peace because it took you away from your stressors, but it also had calming noises. You can experience the same stress and anxiety relief by listening to background music through a set of headphones at work.

Create a playlist and have fun listening to different songs or noises to figure out what works for you. You might love playing classical piano music while responding to emails or listening to forest sounds while plugging numbers into spreadsheets. Even white noise like the sounds inside a plane cabin or a static radio could banish the tension in your mind and put you at ease.

8. Talk With Your Team

When someone adds another meeting to your calendar or asks you to move a deadline up, you might keep your frustrations or exhaustion bottled up. Although it keeps the peace at the moment, that pressure builds until you’re mentally fried. Talk with your team or your manager about where your head’s at and what you need.

Your supervisor should want to create new ways for you to succeed in your role. Your coworkers could also discuss shifting individual responsibilities within a project or presentation. It’s okay to ask for a helping hand sometimes. Your team is there to support you, just like you support them.

Cope With Stress And Avoid Burnout

Burnout affects everyone, but sometimes people start unhealthy habits to avoid dealing with it. These are eight healthy ways to cope with stress at work and avoid burnout that steals your motivation, joy and energy. Consider what’s causing your stress to determine which tips will help you the most. With time and practice, they’ll become part of your routine and your burnout will disappear.

Burnout has become so commonplace that we don’t realize it until we’ve hit a crashing point. This crashing point can feel like a brick wall closing in on us, slowing us down and blocking us from getting up. If you’re tired of carrying this heavy weight on your shoulders, keep reading to learn the ultimate cure for preventing and recovering from burnout.

Let’s start with what burnout is exactly. Burnout is when we have chronic stress and don’t manage it well. It happens from overextending ourselves past our limits. From overworking, overthinking, and overdoing. It affects our energy levels, our moods, our actions, and how we show up. Not to mention it just feels plain crappy!

When we feel crappy it can feel debilitating or impossible to come out of it. The good news is, burnout isn’t permanent, and there’s something we can do to shift it. If burnout comes from not managing our stress well, then the opposite will cure it, managing our stress better.

The Cure To Burnout

The cure to burnout is extreme self-care. Not the kind of self-care you might be used to – the image of mani-pedis and margaritas. Although a fun activity, it won’t give you long lasting effects. For a longer term solution we’re going to have to dig deeper.

We need a solution that nurtures your WHOLE SELF, not just a portion of it. That solution is an integrated self-care practice. A self-care practice that is rooted in your daily routine and nurtures your mind, body, spirit, and environment.

Most of us have heard about body wellness – in terms of eating right and exercising, but what about the other components? The lack of care for our mind, spirit, and environment are negatively contributing to our stress levels. Building a self-care practice that covers all of these components will reduce and prevent burnout.

“The land of burnout is not a place I ever want to go back to.” – Arianna Huffington

Building Your Self-Care Practice

Ready to build your personalized self-care practice? Before you sigh and say you don’t have time for yet another thing on your to-do list, here’s what you want to remember: self-care brings time back to you. So if you feel short on time, this is the solution to give you more time. When you care for yourself, you have more energy, more clarity, and more focus. This reduces the time you spend in confusion, indecision, and worry. If you’re not sold yet, try it for yourself and see what results you get.

To build your self-care practice you have to know yourself deeply because your practice will be unique to you. What relaxes one person, might be stressful for another. Think about cooking for example. For some, this might be the most relaxing, nirvana activity. For others, the idea of preparing dinner makes them want to pull their hair out.

Building the perfect plan for you, requires self-discovery work. Below you will find some questions to help you understand yourself better to create a plan that matches your style.

Questions to help you build your self-care practice:

Do I have a self-care practice right now?

If yes, how can I enhance my self-care practice to help me reduce stress and thrive?

If not, what would an ideal self-care practice look like for me?

What is important to me?

What gives me joy?

What fills up my cup?

What recharges me?

What kind of environment do I thrive in?

Where and when do I feel the most relaxed?

What calms my spirit?

Where in my day can I add 10 minute breaks?

The answers to these questions will help you develop your unique self-care practice. See where in your day you can take breaks, or simply decide to take breaks. Once you create those pockets of time, add in intentional 10 minute joy breaks throughout your day with the activities that relax and recharge you. For some that may be taking a walk in nature, basking in the sun. For others that may be dancing to music, cuddling with their dog. Make your self-care practice yours. Make it fun. Make it joyful.

“If you get tired, learn to rest, not to quit.” – Banksy

Living Your Self-Care Practice

Integrating your self-care practice into your daily routine is what will ensure you live it. If a daily routine sounds overwhelming, start with 1 day a week. Commit to a self-care practice at least one day in the week, then challenge yourself to add more days in each week. Take a moment every week to evaluate how it’s going for you. Notice how you feel before and after your intentional breaks. Notice what it’s adding to your life. And pay attention to your energy levels throughout the day.

Over time you will notice the mental, spiritual, and physical benefits you are gaining and you’ll find yourself drawn to incorporate self-care daily. Think of this self-care practice as natural medicine, joy, and life you are bringing back to yourself. Having your cup full will allow you to live the life you truly want. It will allow you to be present for the moments and people that are important to you. Because of self-care, you will be happier, fuller, and more in alignment to your truth. Cheers to building and living a self-care practice that will not only reduce burnout but also add joy to your daily life.
