Nothing changes in a day. But a lot can happen in 21 days. Various researchers have different viewpoints on the concept of the formation of habits within 21 days. Some researchers reveal that it takes about 66 days while some researchers unfold that it takes 30 days to build habits.

The 21-day rule

To form habits, you must work hard sincerely and consistently for 21 days. You may have to struggle for a few days to acquire habits but once you start working hard you will be amazed to find yourself forming good habits. Similarly, if you want to grow out of any bad habit, control yourself for a few days, and you will be astonished to find yourself free from that bad habit. For instance, you want to hit the gym regularly at 4 AM. For a few days, you would struggle to get up on time to get ready for the gym. Once you start getting up regularly, from around day 22 onwards it becomes a habit and you can make it to the gym regularly and on time. Apply the 21-day rule to outgrow any bad habit you have. You will surely get positive results.

Here is a blueprint for building habits

Begin reinforcing your habits by writing them down. Remember, inking is better than thinking. Additionally, writing gives you clarity, restores your thoughts for future reference, and enhances your focus and concentration. Write down the progress plan and progress report for 21 days.

Be mentally prepared to change your habit. If you have decided to wake up early and go for a walk every day, you will need certain preparations. You have to sleep early. You will have to say “no” to late-night parties. Will will have to leave the bed on time and kill the urge to sleep a little more. Know what sacrifices a change will demand of you and be mentally prepared to go for it.

Ensure that your actions are recorded firmly in your subconscious mind. Go back to chapter 10 to reaffirm the power of the subconscious mind. If you tell yourself firmly while sleeping that you will get up at 5 in the morning, your subconscious mind will act as your alarm. The only task left for you now is to avoid temptations. Avoid making excuses or rationalizations. Do not let yourself off the hook. It’s all about practicing something for some time, say 21 days. Post that you will be automated into it.

Both time and timing matter a lot while trying to build habits. Hence, repeat your actions at a specific time every day until they become automatic. If you want to go for a walk, choose a time that works for you both in terms of your biological clock and your professional clock. If you want to go in the morning, stick to it. Don’t go for it in the morning one day and in the evening on the other day. that way you will confuse yourself. Also, your subconscious mind will not take your intention for change seriously. You will do it for a few days, then skip one day. put yourself into a system. Also, if you are to walk for 30 minutes every day, don’t think you will walk for 15 minutes today and will go for 45 minutes tomorrow. Discipline is important in achieving anything.

To grow any habit, it is best if you have company. For those 21 days at least, surround yourself with like-minded people who share the same vision. People and companionship work like a great motivation. We end up pursuing things when we end up meeting friends and get to spend some time together pursuing the same thing. We get to discuss the progress and plans with each other. That way we stay bound by a cause. The bond between the habit and the people extends far beyond 21 days. Hire a coach or mentor.

Never expect quick outcomes. The 21 days will put only a habit in place. The habit will fetch you results over time. Be patient and consistent. Track your progress. Celebrate your success.

“In essence, if we want to direct our lives, we must take control of our consistent actions. It’s not what we do once in a while that shapes our lives, but what we do consistently.” – Tony Robbins

To train your brain, feed inputs that you intend to strive for 21 days to build new habits. Never feed the information that you will have for a lifetime.

Here is a list of templates to be customized as per your requirements.

I want to give up smoking for 21 days.

I want to give up alcohol for 21 days.

I want to give up sweets for 21 days.

I want to quit eating junk food for 21 days.

I want to blog daily for 21 days.

I want to get up every day at 5 A.M. for 21 days.

I want to exercise every day for an hour for 21 days.

To bring out behavioral improvement, break things into small steps to enable your mind and body to avoid resistance. It boosts your sense of adequacy and helps accomplish your goals and objectives.

Start building your good habits slowly and steadily. Do not attempt to build them overnight. When you start exceedingly small, you will find an amazing outcome. For instance, when you want to exercise, do it daily for a few minutes. Once your body responds positively, increase the duration of your exercise. Avoid torturing your body by exercising heavily in the initial stage.

Over to you!

Building habits is not an easy task. It is about your mind and your practices. It is related to your learned behavior. Habits persist for a longer time because they are automatic, and are done through your subconscious mind. Changing your habits is possible but it requires serious effort. You need to program your subconscious mind through your conscious mind and work regularly to build your habits.

Changing a habit is very challenging because there is a natural tendency to fight against building good habits. If changing habits were easy, everybody would shed their bad habits and embrace good habits. There is often a resistance to overcoming bad habits. It requires tremendous willpower and consistent commitment and self-discipline for 21 days to build great habits. How long it takes to build habits depends solely on the individual. Hence, 21 days cannot be taken as the benchmark. However, it is an ideal duration for any individual striving to build good habits. Good habits bring positive behavioral changes resulting in success in your personal, professional, and social life. Give your all to adapt to them.

Life is hard as it is. With work, school, and bills to pay, we don’t seem to get much of a break. But surely there are things we can do to make life easier. Well, look no further! There are healthy habits we can take on today to make a difference. So let’s take a look at some lifestyle hacks to use the next time we’re feeling swamped.

1. Exercise

It’s no surprise that this one made it first on the list. Exercise is the pinnacle of good health. On average, adults should get 30 minutes of exercise daily. But no one said that exercise must be extraneous for it to count. Even a 10 minute walk a day can make a difference. Too lazy? Try some at home workouts in the comfort of your own abode.

2. Plan Your Meals

The last thing you want to do when you get back home from work is to think about what you’re going to eat. You can only get so much takeout before it takes a financial toll and making food each night can be time consuming. That’s why learning how to prepare your meals can make your life so much better! We suggest finding a credible meal prep service that can actually guide you in the right direction. First of all, it’ll save you time and money. On top of that, it gives you room to consider what your dietary goals and needs are. As a rule of thumb, you should be incorporating all the food groups into your diet, but that depends on preference.

3. Make a To Do List

This one is pretty straight forward. But here’s the catch: before starting off your day, think about the things you want to get done. This way, you won’t forget and you’ll have a reference to tick off what’s left to do.

4. Journal

You don’t have to be an exceptional writer to journal. Don’t sweat it! Think of journaling as a way of being mindful and to reflect on how your day went. It’s good to express yourself so that you can be more in tune with your surroundings and build awareness.

5. Practice Proper Sleep Hygiene

Ideally, we should be getting 7 to 9 hours of sleep (although most of us do not). Lack of sleep not only causes fatigue, but it can lead to many health issues in the long run. That’s why sleep hygiene is vital for us to benefit from the time we have to sleep. Reading before bed, turning off the lights, and cooling your room can all help. You should also try to set a schedule so that you can wake up and sleep at the same time each day.

6. Limit Your Social Media Use

Sure, it’s nice to get updated with what everyone around you is doing. But don’t make social media a necessity. Instead, use that time to do other things that are more beneficial to you. Finish a book, take up a hobby, or simply find the time to actually interact with your friends in real life.

So there you have it! These are just some of the healthy habits you can adopt to help you lead a more productive and healthy lifestyle. With practice, these healthy habits will surely become second nature and you will start noticing the difference in your quality of life..

When it comes to weight loss, you want to focus on maintaining a healthy and happy lifestyle, not just drastically shedding pounds. Weight loss is achievable by many different ways, including exercise and or practicing self-care. Your drinking and eating habits can also affect your weight, and it’s important to keep up with your practices.

Sometimes, your weight loss journey may feel like a dead-end, and you want to try and switch your routine in order to keep persevering on your goals. The good news is that there are eating habits that can help you continue your process. The Nutrition Twins, Lyssie Lakatos, RDN, CDN, CFT, and Tammy Lakatos Shames, RDN, CDN, CFT, who are also members of our medical expert board, gathered their insight to help create a list of eating happens that can help drastically change your weight loss efforts.

After, if you’re looking for more tips, try The Best Eating Habits for Faster Abdominal Fat Loss, Say Experts.

Buying produce and other perishables in bulk may make for a successful grocery shopping trip but it forces you to eat everything before the products expire. That’s why The Nutrition Twins recommend that when you come home, immediately divide any food that you find tempting into single portions and place them in the freezer.

“Because frozen food requires defrosting, impulse eating will be prevented and willpower is taken out of the equation,” say The Nutrition Twins. “This simply requires a plan! Know that you’re only having one—and take one serving out to defrost.”

Seeing your food intake on paper may give you a whole new perspective on what you’re eating and how much of it you’re eating. Keeping a food diary or journal helps log your food consumption throughout the day.

The Nutrition Twins say that research shows that people who record what they eat lose twice as much weight as those who don’t. It will hold you accountable and make you aware of what you’ve eaten. In the particular study of approximately 17,000 people, those who kept daily food records lost twice as much weight as those who kept no records,

Shutterstock

Have you ever accidentally over-poured your oil or dressing into your dishes because it came rushing out of the bottle like it was running in a race? Oils and salad dressings are stored in easy access bottles, and with its liquidy consistency, it’s sometimes hard to control how much comes pouring out.

“This is a game-changer,” say The Nutrition Twins. “Each tablespoon of oil or dressing is 100 to 120 calories and given that salads are typically heavily dressed and that it’s easy to pour several hundred calories in pots and pans when cooking, our clients quickly drop pounds when they make this change.”

Shuteerstock

The slower you eat, the better you’ll feel, as The Nutrition Twins suggest that chewing less will actually help lose weight.

“Part of the beauty here is that this habit also makes you more aware of what you’re eating and you’ll consciously stop eating before you’re overly full,” say The Nutrition Twins. “Depending on how heavy the meal is, this can equal 100-plus calories a meal, which equates to 4 to 5 pounds lost per month.”

Shutterstock

You don’t need to lose flavor in order to lose weight. Swapping out unhealthy ingredients that give your vegetables taste with healthier options makes for a tasty and nutritious dish. Vegetables are very low in calories. The Nutrition Twins suggest that the lemon and spices, rather than butter or dressing, keep the vegetables that way while adding phytonutrients–a substance which is believed to be beneficial to human health and help prevent various diseases.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

These phytonutrients can help to fight inflammation that’s linked with weight gain. Plus, they’re packed with fiber, so you fill up on them instead of the heavier options.

iStock

Do not, we repeat, do not cut out every guilty food pleasure item that you love. You’re allowed to give in every now and then, and it’s actually encouraged.

“When people feel deprived, that’s when they give up on their healthy eating plan and throw in the towel, often going completely overboard,” says The Nutrition Twins. “By allowing yourself to occasionally enjoy small portions of your favorite foods, deprivation is taken out of the equation.”

The “every-other-day” rule normally calls for restricting the calories you eat several days per week, while eating what you want on your non-fast days. For this situation you would be limiting the alcohol intake that you would normally consume.

The Nutrition Twins suggest that instead of finishing one alcoholic beverage and going to the next, have a non-caloric drink like a seltzer in between.

“You’ll save hundreds of calories from the drinks alone and because you won’t get drunk as quickly, and you’ll make more rational food choices,” say The Nutrition Twins. “This is especially important since alcohol increases appetite and lowers inhibitions, making you care less about the choices you make.”

Shutterstock

The Nutrition Twins say it’s easy to mistake thirst for hunger, which is a way to end up consuming excess calories. All that really means is that you just need to hydrate. You can also add lemon to your water for extra flavor.

The Mayo Clinic suggests that, according to The U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, an adequate daily fluid intake of water is about 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids a day for men and roughly 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids a day for women.

Shutterstock

There are many delicious salad recipes that contain more nutrients than a simple one that contain only veggies, dressing and not much else.

“Veggies are awesome for weight loss because they fill you with few calories, but if you make a meal of them, you won’t get protein for staying power, or a healthy carb to prevent craving more carbs,” say The Nutrition Twins.

This could lead to overeating at your next meal, or getting afternoon cravings make you choose unhealthy snacks like a bag of chips or a candy bar.

Shutterstock

Protein is an important part of your diet because it helps your body repair cells and make new ones. It also helps regulate hormones.

By eating protein, it will take longer to digest, helping to keep you feeling fuller while stabilizing blood sugar. The Nutrition Twins say this will prevent overeating that comes from hunger and from blood sugar dips.

Cooked greens can not only be delicious but very nutritious. You can fill up on low-calorie antioxidant-packed, anti-inflammatory greens and turn them into a healthy side dish or an addition to a sandwich, fish, pizza or salad. It’s easy and a great way to help you get lean.

Do you ever eat a meal and say to yourself, “now I need something sweet?” Or, in the middle of the day when lunch wasn’t satisfying enough, and now you need an extra savory snack? Well, instead of constantly looking forward to your post-meal sweet treat, or salty snack, try eating them when you’re not in the mood to.

“It’s challenging enough to indulge in moderate portions of favorite foods, but dive into them when you’re ravenous and you’ll set yourself up to overeat,” says The Nutrition Twins. “Especially since you’d likely even eat foods you didn’t like as much when you’re hungry.”

Shutterstock

Ceylon cinnamon, also known as cinnamomum verum or true cinnamon, has a lighted sweet flavor. It contains all of the health-promoting properties of cinnamon with none of the toxic properties, making it a very healthy option as a sweetener.

“You’ll avoid the need for sugar and skirt those extra calories and the inflammation it causes that’s linked to weight gain,” say The Nutrition Twins. “You’ll also get some of the blood sugar and weight loss benefits that come with the cinnamon.”

Research posted in the American Diabetes Association shows that as little as 1/2 teaspoon a day of cinnamon can lower your blood sugar, cholesterol and triglycerides, and it seems it may even be beneficial on weight.

The Nutrition Twins suggest adding Ceylon cinnamon to your smoothies, yogurt, oatmeal, muffins, baked goods, cereal, popcorn, and more.

“If your dreams don’t scare you, they are not big enough.” This quote by Ellen Johnson Sirleaf says it all. She just nailed the whole idea about dreaming big, don’t you agree? I do! Those dreams should be outrageous, wild, and supernatural. So that everybody around you would try to persuade you that they are unrealistic to achieve, that your efforts will fall flat and you’re going to fail tremendously. This is a sure sign you’re on the right path.

So what is your biggest dream? What is the one goal that you think is impossible to achieve? Why do you think it’s impossible? Because it’s what others told you? Or because it’s you who does not believe you can do that? Or maybe all the above mentioned?

Achieving impossible goals starts with dreaming big. Too often, we sell ourselves short and aim for easily achievable goals rather than striving for something greater. When we shoot for the stars and dream big, anything is possible.

It is also a matter of perspective. Think about this: everything that we have accomplished in life started off as an impossible dream. Once we only dreamed of going to the moon, and now we’ve sent people there. We dreamed of putting a man on Mars, and now we’re planning to do just that.

Making a Choice

You know the saying, “life is what you make it”? Well, that’s true. But it’s not just because you choose your own path in life. It’s also because of the choices you make along the way. How come some people seem to be luckier than others? Because it’s not chance that determines our destiny, but rather the choices we make. Whether big or small, every decision can change our lives for better or worse.

Some people might argue that fate is predetermined, and we can’t change our destiny no matter what we do. But I think our lives are determined by the decisions we make, and each choice takes us one step closer to our eventual goal or fate.

So don’t be discouraged if things don’t go your way at first. Remember, it is never too late for a change and for choosing a different path. Clear-cut choice and determination is the key to realizing your big dream.

So how do you dream big and reach goals that seem impossible?

Here are five ways to change your perspective and achieve the impossible!

1. Shun negativity

This is one of the primary things you need to do when dreaming big. You can’t let other people’s lack of faith in your dreams and in their own bring you down. Instead, you need to focus on your goals and make them happen. When negative thoughts creep into your head, push them out by a memory of a happy day or a good friend, thus replacing them with positive ones.

2. Do what makes you happy

To always stay positive, you should do what makes you happy. Flooding yourself in positivity, you will naturally start to dream big. This is because a constant positive state makes a happy person, and a happy person can work miracles.

3. See the invisible

Have you heard about Eric Edmeades’ notion of the invisible? Do you know what impossible phenomena there are on this planet, which should not be there since they are impossible? Of course, you don’t. Since you haven’t seen them and not heard of them. But this doesn’t mean they don’t exist; we just don’t know they do. Right when we learn about those extraordinary things, we consider them impossible for us to do. And only afterward, step by step, and with relevant persistence in place, we can make them actual.

4. Have faith

If only you could realize what tremendous power you have within! If only you could imagine how miraculous it is. If only you could remove that self-doubt eating you from within, bring that power out from its hiding place, and let it work for you! If only you could have faith. All the doors, impossible and even those invisible, will open if you believe in yourself! And, please, do not confuse faith with hope; hope leads to nowhere; it is vain. Faith, on the other hand, is the strongest feeling leading to success. It’s the key precondition to dream big. The butterfly doesn’t see its beautiful wings; it doesn’t know the beauty it contains. In the same way, we often don’t see our own greatness, our omnipotent power.

5. Take action

Last but not least, take action! As simple as it sounds, this is precisely what it takes for a dream to come true: take action. That’s it! You will never ever achieve your big dreams if you just sit on your hands. So flip your fear and go ahead! Tune out all the negative feedback about your dream. Instead, talk to people who have already achieved their goals. Inquire them about the details, their feelings on the way, and the ups and downs. Other dreamers and their success stories will inspire you, give you wings so that you can go on to dream big.

On your way to dream big, please, do not forget to dream with passion. Have a burning desire to succeed. Do not be afraid to take small steps. Small but steady. Visualize your dream. Talk about your dream loudly. Make it heard: to the walls, yourself, and the universe. Nurture self-confidence, self-belief, and resilience as you proceed. Persist through failures. They toughen you up and are an intrinsic part of success.

Dare to dream big and go for it! And believe me, one day, you will look back and become so proud of yourself.

I am wrapping up leaving here for your inspiration a powerful quote by the first Indian-born astronaut Kalpana Chawla: “The path from dreams to success does exist. May you have the vision to find it, the courage to get on to it, and the perseverance to follow it.”

There is a life-force within your soul, seek that life.
There is a gem in the mountain of your body, seek that
mine.
O traveler, if you are in search of That
Don’t look outside, look inside yourself and seek That.

There is a life-force within your soul, seek that life.
There is a gem in the mountain of your body, seek that mine.
O traveler, if you are in search of That
Don’t look outside, look inside yourself and seek That.

2. Change, by Mary Love

Count me among
the weird, the odd, the unruly.
Stare if you must
then kindly step out of the way.
I am here to change the world
and I have a lot to do.

3. When I Rise Up, by Georgia Douglas Johnson

When I rise up above the earth,
And look down on the things that fetter me,
I beat my wings upon the air,
Or tranquil lie,
Surge after surge of potent strength
Like incense comes to me
When I rise up above the earth
And look down upon the things that fetter me.

4. Wild Geese, by Mary Oliver

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
For a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting —
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.

5. Change, by Wendy Videlock

Change is the new,
improved
word for god,
lovely enough
to raise a song
or implicate
a sea of wrongs,
mighty enough,
like other gods,
to shelter,
bring together,
and estrange us.
Please, god,
we seem to say,
change us.

6. For A New Beginning, by John O’Donahue

In out-of-the-way places of the heart,
Where your thoughts never think to wander,
This beginning has been quietly forming,
Waiting until you were ready to emerge.
For a long time it has watched your desire,
Feeling the emptiness growing inside you,
Noticing how you willed yourself on,
Still unable to leave what you had outgrown.
It watched you play with the seduction of safety

And the gray promises that sameness whispered,
Heard the waves of turmoil rise and relent,
Wondered would you always live like this.
Then the delight, when your courage kindled,
And out you stepped onto new ground,
Your eyes young again with energy and dream,
A path of plenitude opening before you.
Though your destination is not yet clear
You can trust the promise of this opening;
Unfurl yourself into the grace of beginning
That is at one with your life’s desire.
Awaken your spirit to adventure;
Hold nothing back, learn to find ease in risk;
Soon you will be home in a new rhythm,
For your soul senses the world that awaits you.

7. Love’s Change, by Robert Bridges

So sweet love seemed that April morn.
When first we kissed beside the thorn,
So strangely sweet, it was not strange
We thought that love could never change.
But I can tell — let truth be told —
That love will change in growing old;
Though day by day is naught to see,
So delicate his motions be.
And in the end ’twill come to pass
Quite to forget what once he was,
Nor even in fancy to recall
The pleasure that was all in all.
His little spring, that sweet we found.
So deep in summer floods is drowned,
I wonder, bathed in joy complete.
How love so young could be so sweet.

8. Change, by Kathleen Jessie Raine

Change
Said the sun to the moon,
You cannot stay.
Change
Says the moon to the waters,
All is flowing.
Change
Says the fields to the grass,
Seed-time and harvest,
Chaff and grain.
You must change said,
Said the worm to the bud,
Though not to a rose,
Petals fade
That wings may rise
Borne on the wind.
You are changing
said death to the maiden, your wan face
To memory, to beauty.
Are you ready to change?
Says the thought to the heart, to let her pass
All your life long
For the unknown, the unborn
In the alchemy
Of the world’s dream?
You will change,
says the stars to the sun,
Says the night to the stars.

9. The Song of the Potter, by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Turn, turn, my wheel! Turn round and round,
Without a pause, without a sound:
So spins the flying world away!
This clay, well mixed with marl and sand,
Follows the motion of my hand;
For some must follow, and some command,
Though all are made of clay!
Turn, turn, my wheel! All things must change
To something new, to something strange;
Nothing that is can pause or stay;
The moon will wax, the moon will wane,
The mist and cloud will turn to rain,
The rain to mist and cloud again,
To-morrow be to-day.

10. The Struggle, by Edgar A. Guest

Life is a struggle for peace,
A longing for rest,
A hope for the battles to cease,
A dream for the best;
And he is not living who stays
Contented with things,
Unconcerned with the work of the days
And all that it brings.
He is dead who sees nothing to change,
No wrong to make right;
Who travels no new way or strange
In search of the light;
Who never sets out for a goal
That he sees from afar
But contents his indifferent soul
With things as they are.
Life isn’t rest — it is toil;
It is building a dream;
It is tilling a parcel of soil
Or bridging a stream;
It’s pursuing the light of a star
That but dimly we see,
And in wresting from things as they are
The joy that should be.

11. Sonnets to Orpheus, Part Two, XII, by Rainer Maria Rilke

Want the change. Be inspired by the flame
where everything shines as it disappears.
The artist, when sketching, loves nothing so much
as the curve of the body as it turns away.
What locks itself in sameness has congealed.
Is it safer to be gray and numb?
What turns hard becomes rigid
and is easily shattered.
Pour yourself out like a fountain.
Flow into the knowledge that what you are seeking
finishes often at the start, and, with ending, begins.
Every happiness is the child of a separation
it did not think it could survive. And Daphne, becoming
a laurel,
dares you to become the wind.

Before I became strong, I knew what it was like
To be weak,
How difficult it is to love yourself,
To find the wholeness that you seek.
Before I knew the light,
I have had my fair share of darkness, too,
Where my world fell into a hopelessness
And I didn’t know how to get through.
For I have known the tears it takes,
The courage to stand up again,
When you are broken down and bruised
And you know nothing but the pain.
You forget to appreciate love,
If you haven’t seen the hate,
Till you forget the meaning of smile and laughter,
And your heart is left abate.
I have known the strength and courage
It requires to get it right,
To face the things that hold you down
And hold your head up and fight.
Before I was who I am now,

I was someone I didn’t want to be.
I was lost, battered, and defeated,
Before I knew how to be me!

13. A Little Bird Am I, by Hanna Heath

I ask but this one small thing.
Give me the worldly skies
For I cannot stay trapped here
A little bird am I….
Let me leave this here land.
Don’t keep me in a cage.
Let me fly to the highest heights.
Let me come of age.
Let me soar among the clouds.
Let my wings spread into flight.
I need to be free; I need to see
The world without a fright.
I have spent my life so grounded,
But my instincts pull me up.
They tell me to go, to see the new,

To finger each buttercup.
I need to witness greatness,
need the sorrow of poverty.
I need to show the world my wings
And shed this gravity.
I want a life of freedom,
And I want to know what’s real.
I want to step to the edge of earth
And watch the sea reveal.
I want to take the longest ride,
And I want to feel the wind
I want to share this life with you,
So, forgive me, for I have sinned.
For I know I’m leaving you behind
To shadow in my wake,
But I cannot stay in these four walls
Simply for your sake.
I will keep you in my mirror.
With me you’ll always be.
I will share with you my tales,
And I will return to thee.
So I ask but this one small thing
Give me the worldly skies
For I cannot stay trapped here
A little bird am I….

Wayfarer, the only way
is your footsteps, there is no other.
Wayfarer, there is no way,
you make the way by walking.
As you go, you make the way
and stopping to look behind,
you see the path that your feet
will never travel again.
Wayfarer, there is no way –
Only foam trails to the sea.

15. The Change Has Come, by Paul Laurence Dunbar

The change has come, and Helen sleeps–
Not sleeps; but wakes to greater deeps
Of wisdom, glory, truth, and light,
Than ever blessed her seeking sight,
In this low, long, lethargic night,
Worn out with strife
Which men call life.
The change has come, and who would say
“I would it were not come to-day”?
What were the respite till to-morrow?
Postponement of a certain sorrow,
From which each passing day would borrow!
Let grief be dumb,
The change has come.

What changes are you experiencing in your life right now? Or how is life presenting you with a moment for transformation and growth?

Hopefully, you found a change poem in our curation that speaks to your experiences and emotions.

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.”
Lao Tzu

“The distance is nothing; it is only the first step that is difficult.”
Madame Marie du Deffand

Making a positive change in your life does not have to be about making a huge leap.

But I believe that belief is one of those things that hold people back from improving their life and world.

A simpler way that more often results in actual action being taken and new habits being established – in my life at least – is to take smaller steps but many of them.

So today I’d like to share 10 quick habits that can help you to change your life in just 2 minutes or so a day.

Through these small steps you can start to build habits that become stronger and over time can change your life in ways you perhaps can’t imagine now.

To remember to actually do one of the things below each day I recommend writing down a simple reminder.

Put it on your nightstand so that you see it when you wake up each morning. Or put the note in your workspace so you see it early in your day.

If you like and if possible, expand on the small habit after a week or two and do it for just a few more minutes a day.

1. Just start working for 2 minutes on your most important task.

I use this one at least one day every week.

On some days I simply don’t feel like getting started with work. I’d much rather stay lazily on the sofa.

So on such days I just start to work for 2 minutes on my most important task.

That is the deal.

The thing is: getting started is pretty much always the hardest part.

After I have started moving and been at work for those 2 minutes it is usually pretty easy to just continue working on that task.

2. Review and appreciate your day at the end of it.

If you do good things during the day and get things done then that can raise your self-esteem. If you reflect upon that you have done so that is.

So take two minutes of the end of your workday. Appreciate what you did and what you thought.

That is what I will do when I am done with this article and workday.

3. Set a low bar for happiness for the day.

One thing I like to tell myself when I wake up in the morning is this: “Have a low bar for happiness today.”

As I tell myself this and try to keep it in mind during the day I appreciate things more.

The food, my work, the weather, the small events of the day becomes not everyday stuff but something I feel happy to have.

The small or what may be something one takes for granted becomes something I now often pause for a moment or two to take in and appreciate.

But if I become happier in my everyday life for the smaller things does that mean that I become unmotivated to keep working towards the bigger things?

Nope.

This way of looking at my life actually fuels me with more energy and inspiration, life becomes lighter and I feel less inner resistance as I explore and work towards both small and bigger things.

4. Breathe when stressed.

When stress catches up with you, when you start to feel anxious, irritated and or fearful because of it then take 2 minutes.

Sit down.

Breathe through your nose and do it rather deeply with your belly.

Focus on just for your breathing for those 2 minutes. Nothing else.

This will calm your mind down and you can resume your work in a more focused and relaxed mood after that.

5. Open up your senses to what is here now.

Pull yourself out of the past where you relive an old conflict and drag yourself further down a depressing spiral. Pull yourself out of the the future where you imagine a catastrophe at your next meeting, date or presentation.

Place yourself and your attention on where you really are. Here and now.

Do so by sitting down for 2 minutes.

See what is right in front of you.

Listen to the birds and cars outside.

Feel the sun shining in through the window onto your clothes and skin.

Sense the small draft from one of the windows.

Be here fully with all your senses for those 2 minutes.

This will relax your mind and body. Thinking will become easier. And an optimistic viewpoint will feel more natural.

6. When you feel the need to judge someone tap into understanding instead.

When you feel the need to judge someone you know or may not know then take 2 minutes. Ask yourself these two questions:

What parts of this person can I see in myself?

How is he or she like me?

Why do that instead of judging?

Because no one wants to be judged in a negative way and doing so to the people in your life doesn’t help to build good relationships.

Plus, the amount you tend to judge others often tends to be how much you judge yourself too.

So help yourself to live a more positive life in those two ways by pausing when feeling the need to judge and then choose something better.

7. Think for a minute and give someone a genuine compliment.

Spend one minute on coming up with something you really and genuinely appreciate about someone in your life and that is in the same room as you at some point during the day.

Spend the other minute or less on telling him or her the compliment.

She or he will be happy. You’ll feel good about yourself and probably get some positive feelings too from the now happy and complimented person.

It’s a good and small way to build more positive relationships.

8. Hug.

It’s a small thing but physical intimacy can reduce stress and make us feel good. So spend 2 minutes of your day on hugging.

Like compliments it can be a simple way to build warmer and more positive relationships with all kinds of people in your life.

Just use your common sense before you start hugging.

9. Be interested instead of interesting.

At the start of a conversation or to break the ice spend two minutes on asking one or a couple of questions about someone you are talking to and his or her life.

Pay attention and don’t just wait for your turn to talk again.

The interest you give will most likely be returned and you can start to build not only a good conversation but also a giving and fulfilling relationship for the two of you no matter what kind of relationship it may be.

10. Mix things up.

Try the opposite…

Have the vegetarian dish if you always go for the meat.

Walk away from a stupid conflict instead of making it worse.

Let one thing go if you often cling to things.

Say yes to something spontaneous if you often say no and stick with your daily routine.

Take 2 minutes or less in one common or negative situation in your life today, pause for a brief reflection and then make a decision that is uncommon for you.

Make a habit of mixing things up to have more fun. To grow your life in small or bigger ways. To add unexpected experiences.

To make it easier and simpler to step out of your comfort zone in general when you really need to.

And to feel alive.

As we all know, the last two years have been very interesting. As someone that consults and advises leaders around the world, to say that I have been busy is an understatement. When the global pandemic started, I was getting contacted by leaders from all over the world as they faced great uncertainty about the future. I felt it was important to give them the space to share their concerns and trepidations. However, I also made sure to shift the narrative and remind them that this is still a moment of great possibility and opportunity in the world. I’ve seen into the next twenty years and the world will never truly be the same. I want to share some insights with you for embracing and thriving at the next level. Remarkable leaders never get stuck in the past. Revolutionary leaders engineer the possibilities of tomorrow!

Fear is the greatest enemy of the future. As you just heard me share, many leaders were anxious, fearful, and uncertain about the future. While some people consider me an anomaly, I just believe that I am an optimist. As a respected thought leader and prophetic voice, I do not allow the future or uncertainty to rattle me. While I will admit that the last two years have been anything but normal, I refuse to allow cultural events or social constructs to frame my narrative. In other words, you may not be able to control what is happening in the world. However, you always have the power to control what is happening within you. So I challenge you to silence the fear. Why is this so important? Fear is the greatest enemy of your future. Furthermore, fear is a currency just like faith is a currency. Whatever you are rooted in will determine your reality. Refuse to allow fear to rule you or to write the narrative of what is possible for your life. Fear wants to paralyze you and cripple your potential.

Faith is a muscle that must be developed. When you mention faith to some people, you start to get cynical looks and blank stares. However, what most people do not understand is that faith is both a currency and a spiritual force. Everything that you attract into your life will be the result of faith or fear. With that said, faith is a magnet just like fear is a magnet. In order for fear to be silenced in your life, you have to starve it. Notice that I did not say that you have to ignore it. What we ignore often imprisons us to cycles of frustration, failure, and defeat. On the other hand, what we confront we are empowered to conquer. Decades ago I made an incredible discovery about faith that changed my life.

Faith is a spiritual principle and a spiritual law. The power of a principle is that it provides a proven path to results and success. In other words, I can apply a principle repeatedly and see results in my life. Then one day I came to the awareness that faith is a muscle. The strength of your faith is determined by the investments you make in feeding it. The reality is that we are all feeding something. We only have two responses to life. We can either respond in faith or respond in fear. Fear will always send your life in reverse and create cycles of regret.

Faith will always move your life forward and become the catalyst for embracing your prophetic future. If you will develop the muscle of faith, then you can starve doubt in your life and you can seize your destiny. The strength of any muscle is developed by resistance. Challenges are opportunities to build resistance and break into new realms of living.

“A vision is not just a picture of what could be; it is an appeal to our better selves, a call to become something more.” – Rosabeth Moss Kanter

You cannot embrace the next realm in your life without crisis. As the global pandemic rocked the world, I reminded leaders of a message that I have been speaking for years. I believe that crisis is a precious treasure. Most people have a negative connotation of crisis. I have discovered that most people see a crisis as a disruption, disturbance, or detriment to their lives.

Personally, I see a crisis as a developmental tool that ushers you into realms of greatness ad unlimited possibilities. Your perception of crisis will determine the progress and change that you see manifest in your life. I talk to so many people that say that they want to go to the next level. However, the moment that adversity shows up in their lives they start to shrink back to mediocrity.

In order to embrace the next realm in your life, you are going to have to experience a crisis. A crisis is simply an opportunity to develop and to press into the next dimension. A crisis is never sent into your life to cripple you. A crisis shows up as the catalyst ushering you into growth, transformation, and mastery. Your perception of crisis will ultimately determine your promotion and the unlocking of your true capacity.

Living at the next level will require vision. As we head into the final days of 2021, we look back on the last two years as a time of great turbulence, uncertainty, and change in the world. In fact, I have been telling my clients globally that we just lived through one of the greatest shifts and pivots in history. Everything about the world has changed.

When I had this vision of the next twenty years, I saw the total transformation of industries, systems, institutions, and nations. One of the most important skills that we must possess in this new era is vision. While we have understood vision to a certain degree, most people are not living their lives with a real sense of vision. I have discovered that when you live without vision you live a life without boundaries and clearly defined priorities.

Unfortunately, living without vision will always make you a casualty to someone else’s vision. As we head into 2022 and beyond, I want to challenge you to get a clear vision for your life. Vision brings focus to our lives, clarity to our days, and intention to our moments. Most importantly, vision empowers us to give every day of our lives an assignment. Vision is one of the most powerful forms of currency on the planet. Vision empowers you to see, partner with, and give birth to a tomorrow that is not yet born to time.

The world is desperately in need of visionary leadership. Visionary leaders inspire hope, awaken dreamers, and activate those that will champion change.

Following a specific eating plan such as a calorie-restrictive diet, a low-carb/high-fat diet, or an intermittent fasting schedule can be helpful for weight loss, but to get even more benefits, researchers suggest you may want to consider alternating all three.

In a study published in the journal Nutrition, researchers looked at 227 adults who sought medical intervention for weight loss and were advised to follow one of those three approaches. After following one of the diets, 154 participants then switched to another of the dietary interventions, and then the third. During the intermittent fasting—also called time-restricted eating—they still maintained a low-carb, high-fat plan.

RELATED: One Side Effect of Eating a High-Fat Diet, Says New Study

About 78% of patients lost about 5% of their body weight when following a single diet, and there was no difference in the amount of weight loss achieved based on diet type. Those who did the three plans in succession, however, lost almost double that amount, suggesting that switching up your weight-loss strategy could propel you toward your goals more effectively.

“Staying on the same diet can be challenging, and is often a reason that people stop doing it,” says lead author Rebecca Christensen, Ph.D.(c) at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto. “That’s why it’s encouraging to see that successive diets may have an effect. It could be easier for many people to switch to a new dietary intervention than stick to one plan that’s long-term.”

That said, she emphasizes that those who lost “only” 5% of their body weight were still gaining major advantages for their health. That’s because that modest amount is associated with improvements in cardiometabolic function in past research.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that a loss of 5 to 10% of total body weight can help with blood pressure and blood sugar regulation and may lower cholesterol. That’s true even if you stay in the overweight or obese category, the CDC adds, and maintaining that weight loss over time can continue to offer benefits such as better energy levels, greater physical mobility, improved mood, and higher self-confidence.

“Think of this as a variety of different tools you can choose when you’re deciding on a dietary intervention,” says Christensen. “You don’t have to pick only one and stick to that. This study shows there are benefits to going back to the toolbox along the way.”

More than two decades of Western diet wisdom have advised us of one rule of thumb: If you want to lose weight, just cut your carbs, and increase protein. However, a revolutionary new study by a team of metabolism and endocrinology researchers has led to the discovery of another aspect of diet that, as the scientists say, “had the most potent effect” on speeding up metabolism… and, as they suggest, this one change in the foods you eat might even help you live longer.

Dr. Dudley Lamming is a faculty member at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Department of Medicine in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. His latest study’s press release states that in 2014, Lamming was reading about an Australian study that had come upon something remarkable: The mice that had been fed the least amount of protein were the healthiest.

This went against what our culture has preached about nutrition and wellness, but Lamming was aware there was more science behind the low-protein effect. Since then, he and graduate students in his laboratory “have discovered a little-known but robust pattern across both animal models and humans,” according to their new study’s release—that is: “Diets high in the three branched chain amino acids, BCAAs, are associated with diabetes, obesity and other metabolic illnesses.” The three BCAAs are leucine, isoleucine, and valine, all which humans cannot make on our own and therefore must obtain by consuming them in the foods we eat.

Therefore, Lamming and his team believed, reducing leucine, isoleucine, and valine “can counter these metabolic ailments and even extend the healthy lifespan of rodents.”

They went ahead to test their hypothesis, feeding mice with a high-fat, high-sugar, classic Western diet for a few months.

After the mice became obese, Lamming and his team switched up the mice’s diets. They recognized that by restricting the branch chain amino acid isoleucine, “the mice began to eat more food but nonetheless lost weight.” Why? They state: “The weight loss was primarily caused by a faster metabolism, where the body burns more calories as heat while resting.”

Further, they found that “mice fed low-isoleucine diets were leaner and demonstrated healthier blood sugar metabolism.”

Since, according to Medical News Today, isoleucine is abundant in foods like meat, poultry, fish, eggs, cheese, lentils, nuts, and seeds—most of these which are encouraged in low-carb diets like keto (like Kourtney Kardashian follows) or paleo—limiting our intake of these might prove to help us lose weight. Further, that’s not only because of the higher fat content in some of these foods, but because of the presence of isoleucine.

Shutterstock

Meanwhile, “valine-restricted diets had similar, but weaker, effects” to isoleucine restriction. Valine is found in foods like sweet potatoes, asparagus, spinach, peas, mushrooms, and peanuts.

Shutterstock

Finally, the researchers stated that reducing levels of leucine “had no benefit and may even be detrimental” to metabolism. High-leucine foods include dairy, soy, beans, and legumes.

Shutterstock

Lamming says this discovery presents an opportunity to rethink diets because “evidence from animal models suggests that low-protein diets help shed fat even with normal caloric intake by reprogramming metabolism,” according to the study’s release.

Interestingly, this goes deeper to reveal that these amino acids also affect males and females differently, due perhaps to our hormonal reaction to them. One of the department’s graduate students, Nicole Richardson, also “tested a diet in mice that contained just one-third the normal amount of BCAAs. It wasn’t a calorie-restricted diet; the animals could eat as much as they wanted.”

The finding from Richardson’s experiment was that “male mice who ate the diet their entire lives lived about 30% longer on average—roughly eight more months” than female mice. Lamming and his team suggest that because much endocrinological and metabolic research in the past has been conducted on male mice, it may be time to consider how the effects of diet, protein, and amino acids vary based on gender.
