Mental health is something that we all have to deal with in our lives. Unfortunately, mental health can be a bit of a mystery for some people. Thankfully, there are things that you can do to help improve your mental health. In this article, we’ll give you some tips on how to regain control over your mental health.

The Prevalence And Causes Of Mental Illness

Mental illness is a broad term that covers a wide range of conditions. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, about 21% of adults in the United States suffer from some form of mental illness.

There are a number of factors that contribute to mental illness. Some of the most common include:

Stress – We live in a fast-paced, high-stress society. From work deadlines to family obligations, we’re constantly under pressure. This can lead to anxiety and depression.

Social media – Social media has been linked to increased feelings of loneliness and isolation. When we compare our lives to others online, it’s easy to feel like we’re not good enough. This can trigger anxiety and depression.

Diet – A healthy diet is essential for good mental health. Unfortunately, many people don’t eat the right foods or get enough nutrients. This can lead to problems like anxiety and depression.

Sleep – Getting enough sleep is crucial for good mental health. If you are not sleeping enough, it can negatively impact your health.

How To Get Help For Mental Illness

If you’re struggling with mental illness, it’s important to get help. There are many resources available to help you get the treatment you need. Here are some tips on how to get help for mental illness:

Talk To Your Doctor

If you’re struggling with mental illness, your first step should be to talk to your doctor. Mental health is just as important as physical health, and there are a number of things that your doctor can do to help you get back on track.

Your doctor can help you come up with a plan to deal with whatever is causing your mental health issues. This may involve therapy, medication, or a combination of both. It’s important to find a treatment plan that works for you, so don’t be afraid to speak up if something isn’t working.

Your doctor can also provide you with resources to help you deal with your mental health issues. There are many helpful books, websites, and support groups out there.

Seek Out A Mental Health Professional

If you’re struggling with your mental health, it’s important to seek out professional help. A mental health professional can provide you with the guidance and support you need to regain control of your mental health.

There are many different types of mental health professionals, such as psychiatrists, psychologists, counselors, and therapists. You can find a mental health professional that specializes in the type of help you need.

Mental health professionals can provide you with medication, therapy, and other treatments that can help you improve your mental health. They can also help you identify triggers for your mental health problems and develop coping mechanisms to deal with them.

Another way of meeting with a mental health professional is through an inpatient treatment facility. Here, clients can stay at the facility and receive around-the-clock care and treatment. At a facility for inpatient treatment in Orange County, for example, they have specific treatments for various mental illnesses. They also provide care online. This type of setting can be beneficial for those who are struggling with more severe mental health problems.

Join A Support Group

No one should have to suffer from mental health issues alone. Thankfully, there are many different types of support groups available that can help you on your road to recovery.

One of the most beneficial types of support groups is a therapy group. In therapy groups, you will meet with a counselor or therapist and talk about your mental health issue in a safe and supportive environment. This can be an incredibly helpful way to gain insight into your condition and start working on a treatment plan.

Another great option is a peer support group. These groups are made up of people who are going through similar issues as you. Being able to share your experiences with others who understand what you’re going through can be very helpful. Peer support groups can provide a sense of community and belonging that can be very valuable for your mental health.

No matter what type of group you choose, getting involved in a support group is a great way to start.

Learning how to regain control over your mental health can be a difficult and daunting task. However, it is important to remember that you are not alone in this journey. There are many resources available to help you on your path to recovery. These tips are just a starting point, but they can help you get started on the road to regaining control over your mental health.

Birth control can fail for several reasons. Perhaps you forgot to take your birth control pill at the right time, a condom broke, or your IUD dislodged without your knowledge. Try not to panic if any of these things happen. Here are some steps you can take if you think your contraception might’ve failed.

Find Emergency Contraception

If you know right away that your birth control method failed, you can take the morning after pill. This pill is a type of emergency contraception that can be taken up to three to five days after sex, depending on the brand you choose.

Emergency contraception will help prevent pregnancy by delivering a large dose of medication or hormones to prevent fertilization. It can be incredibly effective at preventing pregnancy if taken within the hours immediately following intercourse.

However, if you’ve passed the time frame for the morning-after pill, there are a few steps to take to confirm and plan for your pregnancy.

Check Your Symptoms

If you think you might be pregnant, take stock of your symptoms. A late or missed period is the most common indicator of pregnancy, especially if your cycle is fairly regular. Other common early pregnancy signs are mild cramping, spotting and nausea. If you experience any of these symptoms, you should take a pregnancy test.

Take A Test

If you’ve checked your symptoms or you know your birth control failed, it’s time to take a test. You can obtain a test from a drug or grocery store, or you can visit your local women’s clinic or obstetrician.

If you self-test, remember that not all tests are created equal. Certain tests, such as blue dye tests, have been reported to have a higher rate of false positives.

Contact Your Doctor

You should contact your obstetrician right away if you’ve received a positive test result. Your doctor will be able to confirm your results for you and can advise you on your next steps.

If you don’t already have an established obstetrician or are currently in search of one, you might have women’s health centers or clinics in your area. These clinics will be able to offer assistance and provide more information on how to prepare for pregnancy.

Consider Your Options

There are a a few options for women who experience unplanned pregnancies:

Keep the Baby – As you go through the steps to confirm that you’re pregnant, you might decide you want to keep your baby. If that’s the case, your obstetrician can help guide you along the way with proper prenatal care, along with educational and support resources.

Adoption – Adoption is another option if you’re not prepared for a child. Many agencies can help you find adoptive parents for your baby. You can choose between an open or closed adoption, depending on whether you’d like to remain in the child’s life.

An unplanned pregnancy can be a scary thing. Perhaps you weren’t ready for a baby or never wanted to have children. Feeling overwhelmed is perfectly normal, but it’s important to know you’ve got support and options. These things happen all the time. No matter what, you aren’t alone.

!function(f,b,e,v,n,t,s){if(f.fbq)return;n=f.fbq=function(){n.callMethod?
n.callMethod.apply(n,arguments):n.queue.push(arguments)};if(!f._fbq)f._fbq=n;

For you, intrusive thoughts are just a part of life.

Something good happens, and your mind immediately conjures up a horrifying tableau of disasters.

But what if controlling your thoughts could change everything?

When you learn how to control your mind, you can change how circumstances shape your present and future.

You know the secret to bringing good out of anything.

Controlling your mind is the master key.

And it’s within your reach.

Can You Really Control Your Thoughts?

One of the most significant clues to how you think is what you say aloud when you’re not trying to impress anyone. Another is how you react when things go sideways.

And it works both ways. What you say out loud—or write down—affects your thinking. And while you can’t control what’s happening outside your head, and you can’t stop every random, unwanted thought from coming, you can choose how you respond.

So the answer to “Can you control your thoughts?” is mixed. Yes, you can control your conscious thoughts—your rational mind. And you control the expression of that mind: what you say out loud and what you do, as well as what you write down.

The tricky part is finding a way to steer your automatic, reactive thinking in a better direction. But if you’re willing to put in the effort, it can be done.

How to Control Your Thoughts: 9 Ways to Manage Your Mind

Read through all nine strategies for controlling your thoughts and make a note of the ones that stand out for you.

1. Listen to Your Thoughts

It also helps to write them down. When you’re feeling angry, sad, or overwhelmed, take a moment to listen to the thoughts bouncing around in your head.

Which thoughts are the loudest? Which thoughts hurt the most? Which ones feel impossible to shake off? Draw out those thoughts, and write them down.

You won’t get any judgment here. We know how dark intrusive thoughts can be. But you’re stronger than you think. And you have everything you need to fight back and win.

First, you need to know what you’re dealing with.

2. Rewire Your Brain

A daily practice of mindful meditation can change your brain structure, massively impacting how you think and feel.

Right now, you might be thinking, “Oh, sure, if I could actually quiet my brain enough to meditate, I’d do it all the time.” It turns out, though, your mind doesn’t have to be blank for you to reap the benefits of meditation.

Random thoughts will come. Your job is to simply accept them and let them float on by. If you catch yourself dwelling on one of those thoughts, forgive yourself, and let it go.

You don’t have to be perfect at this. You just have to keep trying—at least for a few minutes a day. You can do that.

3. Identify Thought Distortions

The chances are good that the thoughts that make you feel the worst are based on cognitive distortions. Ask yourself if any of the following sound familiar:

All-or-Nothing or Black-and-White Thinking / Polarized Thinking—It’s either this extreme or the other; there is no gray area.

Overgeneralizing—You take one instance or example and turn it into a negative blanket statement about something,

Catastrophizing—Your mind immediately goes to the worst-case scenario, and it feels inevitable.

Mental Filter—You focus on the negative details or examples and exclude all positive ones. You see only what confirms your limiting beliefs.

Disqualifying the Positive—Instead of ignoring the positive details or examples, you negatively interpret them.

Jumping to Conclusions: Fortune Telling—You make negative predictions about your future as if you could know precisely how the future will play out.

Jumping to Conclusions: Mind-Reading—You make assumptions about other people’s intentions toward you as if you could read their minds.

“Should” Statements—You use the expression “should have” to shame yourself (or someone else) for not knowing or doing more than you did.

Emotional Reasoning—You tell yourself, “If I feel it, it must be true.” So, if you’re jealous, it must be because you have good reason to be.

4. Identify Limiting Beliefs

At the root of your self-sabotaging thoughts are deeply-held beliefs like “I’m not meant to be rich” or “I’m going to die alone.”

These beliefs stay with you not because they’re true but because you’ve (probably) never questioned them. Maybe you felt you weren’t allowed to. Or perhaps it was just easier to assume they were true.

What beliefs do you have that make you feel deflated, ashamed, or beaten when you put them into words?

When something happens, you can often identify these beliefs, whether you see the situation as bad, good, or indifferent. Your thought reactions can tell you plenty about what you believe.

Listen to those thoughts and then dig deeper to get to the beliefs behind them.

5. Be Proactive Instead of Reactive

When you’re on auto-pilot, you’re relying on old habits, which you can only break by acting consciously. If you can identify those thinking habits (often cognitive distortions), you can practice responding differently.

Start by taking a closer look at a situation that usually gets an adverse reaction from you. What exactly is going on? Resist the temptation to embellish your account with assumptions about the other person.

The way you see it and the way they see it are unlikely to match up. Once you reframe the situation in a positive or neutral light, it’s easier to see how you might respond in a way that benefits you both.

Someone with a fixed mindset can look at one failing grade and think, “Well, that’s it, then. I’m an idiot. And I will never be smarter than I am, now. No one must ever know my shame!”

Sound familiar? It’s pretty close to overgeneralizing, but it’s more than that. It’s based on a deeply-held belief that you can’t get any better or smarter than you are now.

Someone with a growth mindset, on the other hand, will think, “Well, that didn’t go well. But it’s just one test. I have an active, curious, and adaptable mind. I’ll learn from this and find a way to do better on the next test.”

The difference in thinking is huge. And the difference in your life will reflect that.

7. Stop Listening to Negative People.

You know them by their general tendency to complain about anything and everything—and, to varying degrees, everyone. They have something negative to say about most of the topics that come up in conversation.

They see the world and most of the people in it through dark, dingy lenses. They might even pride themselves on it. Spend less time listening to these people and more time consciously choosing your own thoughts.

When you’re not constantly exposed to other people’s complaining, it’s easier to see something good in everything that happens. It’s easier to see evidence that your life is full of miracles just waiting to be noticed.

8. Tell Yourself a Different Story.

How you see the world depends on the stories you tell yourself:

A depressing story has a depressing effect on its audience. But if you’re the one telling the story about your experiences and what you see in them, you can choose to tell a story that lifts you up.

I’m not saying you should lie; just focus on what’s good. Find a way to reframe your experiences in a positive or neutral way.

And stop punishing yourself for your mistakes. Learn from them, and let them go.

9. Get the Help and Support You Need.

You don’t have to figure your life out all alone. Learn to ask for help when you feel stuck in a place you don’t want to be. It’s not weakness to acknowledge your need for help in seeing things from a less painful perspective.

It takes strength and humility to honor your needs. Everyone has them. If you encourage self-care in others, do the same for yourself. Part of self-care can be regular appointments with a therapist or mentor who can help you see things differently.

And while you’re taking their advice, forgive yourself for those times when you slip up. You’re human.

Just keep trying.

Now that you know how to control your thoughts, which of the tips described stood out for you? And what will you do differently today?

While weight loss may seem like this lofty, at times unreachable, goal, there are easy, affordable, and quick ways to support your journey. And one of those ways is to drink the right beverages that promote weight loss.

Often overlooked, the beverages you drink play a big role in determining the number you see on the scale. In fact, 20% of your daily calorie intake comes entirely from beverages, according to a BMC Public Health analysis. For the average person, that equates to about 400 calories a day.

So making the right choices about what to sip is paramount when it comes to losing weight, and that’s why dietitians say that water is the best thing to drink to control your weight.

“Most people don’t drink enough water, and often confuse hunger for thirst. Having a daily water goal can [help to control weight] by detering people from drinking other beverages high in calories and sugar, like soda, sweetened coffee, and sports drinks,” Amy Davis, RD, LDN, of The Balanced Dietitian.

There are several ways that drinking water can support weight loss.

Studies have shown that drinking water boosts your metabolism by increasing the rate in which your body burns calories. Over the course of just one hour, drinking water can boost your metabolism by as much as 24%.

Drinking water can also help you feel full, thus keeping you from eating unnecessary calories. A study published in the journal Obesity found that drinking 2 cups of water before a meal can support weight loss by helping you to eat fewer calories. In fact, researchers found that those who drank water before a meal ended up losing 4.5 pounds more over the course of 12 weeks compared to those who ate without being asked to drink water beforehand.

Like Davis says, one of the main ways drinking water helps you control your weight is by displacing other, higher-calorie beverages. Two notable ones are alcohol and coffee drinks.

“During the pandemic and quarantine, many people started drinking more. The nightly glass of wine or cocktail will put on pounds especially in your stomach area!” says registered dietitian, Lisa DeFazio, MS, RD. “It opens your appetite, increases sugar cravings, and you will eat more. The next day you are more tired and less likely to exercise.” (Related: What Happens To Your Body When You Give Up Alcohol)

Coffee drinks are just as bad as drinking alcohol when it comes to your weight—and oftentimes end up carrying more calories per drink than a glass of wine or pint of beer: “Fancy blended coffee drinks are like milkshakes; they can be 300-400 calories each!” says DeFazio.

So you can see that swapping either of these beverages with a glass of water can immediately save you anywhere between 100 and 400 calories!

How to drink water for weight loss

Davis recommends drinking at least half of your body weight in ounces of water daily to control your weight. (Related: This Is How Much Water You Need to Drink for Weight Loss.)

And because we know that plain water might be a bit underwhelming for people, the dietitians we spoke to recommended a couple of ways to jazz it up.

“If plain water is too boring for you, add sliced citrus fruits for a hint of flavor,” says Summer Yule, MS, RDN, a registered dietitian and recipe developer based in Connecticut.

For a bit of kick, you can also try spiking your water with some apple cider vinegar!

“Blend 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in 4 to 5 ounces water and drink 5 minutes before a meal. This trick helps to improve digestion and thereby stabilize blood sugar. The better you digest your food, the more full and more energized you will feel,” says Kylene Bogden MS, RDN, a holistic registered dietitian for the Cleveland Cavaliers and co-founder of FWDfuel Sports Nutrition.

Tossing a green tea bag into a cup of hot water can also accelerate your weight loss results: Green tea is full of antioxidants called catechins, which have been linked to enhanced fat burning.

No matter which way you choose to drink water, just know that by doing so, you’ll be helping your body function at its best so you can better control your weight and live healthily. And for the other side of the story, don’t miss these 7 Unhealthiest Drinks for Weight Loss.
