The bedroom is, in many senses, the most important room in any home. It’s where you’ll spend a considerable chunk of your time if you’re getting the recommended eight hours of sleep every evening. Designing a space that’s right for getting you relaxed and ready to drift off is important. But what changes might you make to create the ultimate relaxation-promoting bedroom? Let’s take a look.

The Importance Of Sleep

Sleep is something that most people aren’t getting enough of. It will help to refresh your mind, improve concentration, stave off depression, improve athletic performance, and reduce your risk of a whole host of diseases.

The negative effects of sleep deprivation can be cumulative. Thus, even if you think you’re coping with just a few hours of sleep a night, you might be suffering negative consequences in the long-term. Some of these consequences you might not even recognise!

Making Your Bedroom More Relaxing

So, what practical change might you make to allow you to enjoy a better night’s sleep? While there are multiple components to good sleep hygiene, the right environment is a significant one.

Your first change should be to make sure that the space is kept dark at night time, and light during the day. This means investing in a heavy set of blackout-lined curtains. Draw them, and you might find that you save on your energy bills, as well as help to deal with light pollution.

You should also invest in a quality mattress. Something that’ll support you, and allow your skin to breathe during spells of warm weather. Mattresses tend to be highly subjective. Make sure that you thoroughly road-test yours before you commit to a purchase.

You’ll also want to declutter the space. This will help to ensure that you’re able to relax, and that there aren’t any loose items distracting you when you’re trying to drift off.

Soothing colours might also be beneficial. This tends to mean muted pastel shades. You don’t want to be looking at garish, loud colours or patterns in the minutes before you drift off.

The lighting you choose should also be multi-layered. A combination of overhead lights, standing and table lamps can all be beneficial. You might also consider investing in smart-bulbs that can be dimmed according to the time of day.

You might also address the air in the room, too. The right scent can help to add just the right amount of calm, and you don’t need to create a fire hazard in order to do it. If you’re concerned about the heat during summer, then you might want to invest in a quiet fan to help circulate the air and keep you cool whilst asleep.

Taking the points above into consideration will help prepare you and your bedroom for the perfect night’s sleep.

Our homes are our havens, where we rest, recoup, and unwind at the end of the day. Your home’s features, like the colour of the walls, the art on display, and the amount of clutter, also impact your physical and emotional wellbeing.

Are you looking for the best supplier to supply you with quality construction materials to help renovate your home? Get building materials from Materials Market and create a relaxing home. Here are some interior decorating ideas and home design tips to reduce your anxiety and enhance the general wellbeing of your house.

Utilise Soothing Hues

Allow colour to be your co-creator of tranquility to make sure that your home design contributes more to settling you down than increasing your tension. In other words, choose your colours carefully while decorating to reduce anxiety. According to studies, the various paint colours that ease stress include blue, violet, white, pink and green tones.

Contrarily, striking colours, like red, are linked to heightened stress reactions. Let’s imagine you battle anxiety but want to decorate with vibrant colours. Choose a softer rendition of your favourite colour; for example, choose a soft pastel red instead of a bright red in your living room. Without the anxiety-inducing side effect of a paint hue that makes you uneasy, your area still benefits from the delightful splash of colour.

Consider Your Sleep Quality

Nothing beats sleeping on an uncomfortable bed, particularly for extended periods. Not only can our mattress affect our physical health, but it also significantly impacts our mental health. Uncomfortable mattresses and messy bedrooms are stressful and might affect the amount of deep sleep we receive each night.

Replace your mattress at least every seven years to ensure it is comfy. After you’ve polished the bed for your requirements, you may concentrate on the entire room design. Walking into a relaxing and elegant bedroom will set the tone for a restful night’s sleep.

Bring In Nature

There’s a reason you enjoy house plants so much and find plant-filled environments so appealing. Whether you realise it or not, biophilic designs that reconnect you to nature increase your happiness tenfold.

According to research, surroundings devoid of nature significantly impact a person’s mental and physical health. For example, plants could lower stress and health issues such as anxiety. House plants are so crucial to our interior environment that NASA studies the best plants for your house and their air-purifying qualities.

Allow Space

Use negative or white space to provide breathing room around things in your house while designing to relieve tension. Consequently, this may give the illusion of a more significant area, especially in smaller spaces. The perception of a more substantial space makes rooms seem less closed off, which may act as an anxiety buffer.

For example, leave accessible areas on shelves. Allow plenty of room between objects such as your couch and the wall. If you can’t figure out how to implement this idea, employ a professional. The experts may advise on decorating practically while also providing (physical and metaphorical) space for leisure.

Create A Comfort Zone

It would be best if you adapt your choice of a relaxing activity to the space in your house. Whether meditating, reading or listening to music, you don’t need to dedicate a whole room to this purpose. Instead, choose a location that is out of the way of the primary flow of activities in the home. At some point in their lives, we all need an “escape.”

Parting Word

The home design tips above will clear your head, show you how to cultivate a more optimistic outlook, and turn your house into a more enjoyable place to spend time. Therefore, making even a slight change in how you design your home using the best materials may help relieve anxiety and other wellbeing issues.

Our homes are our shelters from all the demands of life — even if we also work from them. That said, designing your home to cultivate a sense of safety, peace, and positivity isn’t always easy. The stresses of life can seep in, impacting our mental health and taking the enjoyment out of our time at home.

Fortunately, you can design your home to improve your mental health with the right approaches. From getting rid of the clutter (Marie Kondo that junk!) to incorporating art that makes you happy (Bob Ross it up!), these tips can help boost your mood in an ideal living space.

Declutter

First and foremost, decluttering is a great way to enhance the vibes in your space for a better mood. That’s because clutter can impact mental health to an extreme degree. You may not think those piles of clothes in your bedroom, stacks of junk on your table, and excess thrifty furniture are doing you harm. However, the reality is these things can contribute to high stress and low energy.

Clutter has a way of infiltrating mental health, creating distractions, and impacting our ability to focus. To avoid these challenges, build a home design with the potential to minimize clutter and open up your space. These are some simple ways to get started:

Toss out things that don’t “spark joy,” Kondo-style.

Organize and streamline built-in closet and storage space.

Consider renting a storage unit for things you want to keep but don’t want taking up space in your house.

From here, maintaining a clutter-free home is a simpler process. You can even go the extra mile by completing home DIY projects that add built-in or retractable storage compartments. In turn, you can keep a clearer space and a clearer head.

Bring The Light In

Next, look for ways to boost the amount of natural light in your home. Sunlight is vital to our health and well-being. Exposure to sunlight boosts serotonin production, which is crucial to maintaining positive mental health and a good reason to move to a sunny state.

However, not everyone can just up and move to a place like Austin, Texas, where the sun shines 300 days a year. Instead, your priority will be to maximize the amount of natural light in your home to support a healthier, brighter environment. Here are some tips for designing your home around natural light:

Paint in light, bright colors that will reflect the light coming in.

Place mirrors to align with windows and spread more sunlight throughout your space.

Keep all windows clean and clear.

These design elements will boost the brightness of your space without consuming more electricity. In addition, the natural power of sunlight will enhance your mental health with boosts to serotonin and Vitamin D production in your brain.

Add Plenty Of Greenery

Another fanatic design choice for enhancing your mood is to bring nature indoors. Doing so can lead to all kinds of mental health benefits, from stress reduction to the therapeutic effects that often come from caring for living things. Biophilic (nature-loving) home design is a compelling trend of 2022 and beyond because it brings us closer to our roots (pun intended).

However, there’s a balance to be struck. You want your home greenery to elevate your space without being overwhelming or dangerous to your pets. Here are some tips for adding greenery safely and pleasantly:

If you have pets, do your research on which plants are safe for animals. Yucca, for instance, is common but extremely toxic to cats and dogs.

Use architectural plants like cacti and snake plants to achieve a modern look.

Organize your plants to achieve the design you want while ensuring that your plants get the sun they need.

These tips will help you design your space with greenery that brings you peace and comfort. By applying them, you can create a thriving environment for you, your pets, and your plants in a biophilic and relaxing home.

Use Mood-Enhancing Colors

Don’t forget the power of color in elevating both home design and your overall mental health within a space. Paint colors can improve your wellbeing, helping to relax you or even give you energy as you go about your day. But to incorporate these effects into your home design, you’ll need a better understanding of how color impacts mood.

While your feelings about color can be deeply attached to your personal and cultural experiences, certain tones tend to have specific effects. Explore these colors and their impact on mood:

Incorporate blues, greens, and neutral tones for a relaxing or biophilic vibe.

Consider purples, yellows, and whites for a flair of inspiration.

Try reds, oranges, and yellows for a bold and energetic feel that might stimulate creativity and conversation.

Investigate how various paint shades make you feel, then design a space that lends you the energy and creativity you need to maintain positive mental health.

Find Art That Makes You Happy

Art is the next step in a healthy home design. Our spaces reflect who we are and can remind us of what we care about most. Art in these spaces can evoke certain emotions and help us focus on what’s most important. From photographs of friends and family to huge abstract pieces, what we choose to display is a part of us.

That said, find art that makes you happy to hang in your home. This tip is too subjective to give specific recommendations. Every person will have their own preferences and styles. The important thing is to think about your budget and to let the art speak for you and your space. The result will be an environment that reminds you of who you are and helps you become (and show off) the best version of yourself.

Use these tips to design your home to improve your mental health. From taking out the clutter to expressing yourself through art, a more comfortable and appealing environment awaits in which you can truly relax and find inspiration.

The practise of mindfulness is just as fulfilling as creating a comfortable space in your home where you can practice it. Maybe you already have a corner where you meditate or do yoga, but why not spread out that space and dedicate more of your home to mindfulness? There are no right or wrong ways to use design to create a mindful home, but if you need some help, here are a few great ideas:

Declutter

If you can’t dedicate an entire room to relaxation or fill your home with mindfulness elements, it’s okay – a quiet corner is often all you need. This space, no matter how big, should be kept free of clutter so you can focus on your body and mind instead of glancing at unopened mail and scattered kids’ toys all over the floor. Remove all kinds of distractions from your space and place a few boxes so you can quickly clean up the space.

Control Noise

Noise can be detrimental to relaxation and mind peace, so if you live somewhere noisy, add a white noise machine to your relaxation area to mask the distracting noises. If you have space, a water feature is a great addition to your home—it brings nature inside and blesses you with relaxing murmuring sounds.

Light It Up Properly

Boost mindfulness and relaxation in your home by lighting up your space. All indoor spaces deserve some mood lighting, so use lamps to create a relaxing and stimulating effect. If you’re aiming for a whimsical feel in your home, string lights always look great. If you have outdoor spaces at home, make sure to light them up as well to boost their décor and functionality. A few path lights in your garden will make it pleasant and safe so you can spend the evenings relaxing outdoors and contemplating your connection with nature.

Boost Ambiance

All your spaces deserve some ambience, so incorporate candles, essential oils and incense into your décor. Soft candlelight can transport you to another place and time and enhance any space with its warm flickering glow. Just make sure to practice candle safety to avoid turning your space into a fire hazard. And don’t forget to play some music in your home—it can additionally boost relaxation and mood.

Improve Comfort

To add some more ambience and boost comfort in your space, you can add a few soft elements. Add some beautiful rugs to your floors to increase softness, warmth and make your floors more suitable for lounging and relaxation. If you choose a rug with a little more height and add a mat underneath, you can use it for yoga, and if you surround it with some pillows, you can meditate on it easily.

Add Some Plants

One of the easiest ways to bring peace, relaxation and health to your home is to mix indoor and outdoor spaces with plants. There are countless indoor plants that not only beautify your place and improve relaxation but also clean out your air and boost your mental health. And don’t neglect your outdoor space as well. If you have a garden, plant a few tall plants for added privacy and noise blocking. To further center your energy, add some rocks near your plants.

Personalize Your Space

To truly feel relaxed and free to think, contemplate and improve your thoughts, you need to personalize your space. You can do that in many ways—by including different fabrics, artwork, letters and cards from loved ones, and other elements. Fill your bookshelves with books that have a special meaning to you. It’s your space, so you can do whatever feels right for you, these are just suggestions.

Affirm Your Space

It’s true that positive words can positively impact your life, so add a few positive affirmations to your home. Print out quotes that speak to you and frame them in your living room, meditation corner or bedroom. Oftentimes, we forget how amazing we are and we need some reminders. If you want to practice mindfulness, these encouraging quotes and words will be there for you to fall on when you’re feeling down.

Creating a mindful space can improve your relationship with meditation and spirituality and your attitude towards life. With these tips, you will start your journey towards a mindful home, but make sure to add a few elements of your choosing to completely create a unique, relaxing and pleasant space for you.
