“Ask for forgiveness, not permission.”

It’s an old adage that can be a tad controversial, but more importantly—neither is going to get you what you want. Plus this saying inherently means that people are going to be upset, and you’re going to have to deal with that. Not so fun.

In the game of entrepreneurship and personal growth, it’s vital that you know the key things that will help you grow and the ones that will hinder your growth. Giving your power away to someone else—that’s not going to cut it. Neither will thinking subconsciously that people (especially your inner circle) will be mad at you for making the right decision for yourself.

Subtle but important

Growing up, we ask our parents, our teachers, and other adult figures in our lives for all kinds of permission—to go to the zoo, to cross the street, even to go to the bathroom. In the United States, we’re not even allowed to regulate our own bodies until we go off to college in most academic settings. But that mentality doesn’t just go away because you turn 18, get a job, or enroll in college.

The truth is that we seek permission in all kinds of ways throughout the day, undermining our own authority, values, and voices. So it stands to reason that we would subconsciously seek permission as we grow our businesses or make major life decisions.

The subconscious believes that if we get permission, then we can move forward with less resistance and more support. The downside is twofold. When you ask permission, you’re not honoring what’s right and true for you. Yes, the interest is nice and it’s really fun to watch the people you love get excited about your idea. But being able to validate your own ideas and decisions first is key in developing your circle of support and owning your innate value.

“Your support network is the solid ground from which you can propel yourself upwards.” – Anna Barnes

What to do instead

Instead of asking for permission or forgiveness, we ask for support. We all want to be supported, especially if our ideas feel big, hard, or out of reach. In order to receive the support that you want, you have to be intentional and clear about asking for it.

This means stating what are going to do and the decisions that we’ve made with an air of, “If you want to support me in this, I would love that because I want as much support as possible,” mixed with the attitude of, “If you want to support me in this, that’s great. Thank you! But if you don’t, that’s okay, too.”

Releasing people from the need to support you is important for two reasons. The first is in practicing being genuinely okay with others not supporting you, you release people from this sense of obligation to be okay with everything that you do. The second is that you’re making the decision about what you’re going to do long before you ask for support.

Their decision about whether or not to support your idea is not going to change your decision about whether or not to do it.

Counsel vs. Support

Seeking counsel and seeking support are two different things, and you have to know which one you’re looking for. If you’re seeking counsel, then you haven’t made the decision yet, and you should only be speaking with someone you believe can help you make the right decision for yourself (not make it for you). It’s important to seek out someone who has the perspective and ability to ask you the right questions in order for you to come to the right conclusions for yourself. Once you’ve made your decision, then you’re seeking support.

If you’re seeking support, then you need to be consciously asking for support for the decision that you’ve made. Statements like, “Hey! I’ve made the decision to do something, and I’d love your support on it. If you don’t feel like you can support me on this, that’s okay.” Even better if you can ask them for specific support. Once you have the other person’s agreement, you’re able to move forward with the conversation.

However, if the other person isn’t willing to support you, let it go. Because you’re not making your decision based on the support of others, you can put boundaries in place for your communication—both protecting you and honoring their choice. Once someone has made it clear that they’re not comfortable supporting you, don’t waste energy trying to convince them. Instead, revel in the people who are excited to support you and move forward with confidence knowing that you have a circle of people who have your back.

The ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus of Ephesus once said that change is the only constant in life, and he may as well have been talking about the rules of weight loss.

The rules about how to eat healthy and lose weight have been tweaked and adjusted so often with every new diet strategy that it can be hard to keep track. And amid all the confusion and uncertainty, we often stumble into eating patterns that do more harm than good.

It is very common for people to develop eating habits that they believe are the answer to losing weight, but can backfire, say dietitians. And that’s unfortunate because following misguided advice that doesn’t work can make you feel that something’s wrong with you. Here are some of those eating habits that may be secretly undermining your goal of losing weight. Read on, and for more on how to eat healthy, don’t miss Eating Habits to Lose Abdominal Fat As You Age, Say Dietitians.

Shutterstock

Logic tells us that if we’re gaining weight because we’re eating too much, the opposite—eating very little—should help us lose weight. That’s just wrong and it’s a common approach that often backfires. “Not only can this lead to increased cravings and potentially feeling more out of control around food, but entering the starvation zone can slow down your metabolism through adaptive thermogenesis,” says medical board member Lisa Moskovitz, RD, a registered dietitian with the NY Nutrition Group and author of The Core 3 Healthy Eating Plan. If your body doesn’t get the calories and nutrients it needs to function properly, it will respond by holding onto fat cells, she says.

We know what you’re thinking: “Hey, I’ve been told these foods are super healthy, loaded with antioxidants, filled with tropical fruits and vegetables. What gives?” Well, yes fruit and antioxidants are good, but not at the expense of too many calories and grams of sugar.

“Top these fruit bases off with nut butters and granolas and more fruit and you have a very big calorie bomb that ultimately may lead to more sugar cravings,” warns medical board member Amy Shapiro, MS, RD, founder of Real Nutrition. You need to be choosey about the ingredients that go into smoothie bowls. “Watch your toppings; skip the granola and enjoy nuts, chia seeds, and coconut to reduce the sugar even more,” Shapiro says.

RELATED: The Best Smoothie Combinations for Faster Weight Loss, Says Dietitian

Shutterstock

It doesn’t. And it certainly doesn’t mean fewer calories. In fact, going for the gluten-free stuff often leads to eating more processed foods and gluten-free foods often contain more calories than regular wheat products. “Many people believe gluten-free equals low carb, but this is incorrect,” says Shapiro. “If you want to go gluten-free, do not eat the food substitutes like bread, cakes, cookies, and chips. Eat whole foods like potatoes, beans, and gluten-free grains to see results.”

Shutterstock

Carbohydrates have been vilified so often in diet books, online programs, and food advertising that people have taken “watching your carbs” to the extreme by trying to cut out almost all carbs. Big mistake. “Yes, you cut calories and may lose water weight initially since carbs hold water in the tissues, but the weight loss typically is fleeting,” say Eatthis.com medical board members Tammy Lakatos Shames, RDN, CDN, CFT, and Lyssie Lakatos, RDN, CDN, CFT, also known as The Nutrition Twins.

Carbs are fuel for the brain and your muscles. “Cutting carbs completely is unrealistic since carbs are fuel for the brain and muscles. Without them, you’ll crave the quickest pick-me-up you can find – SUGAR. When you give in to the craving, often you end up throwing in the towel on healthy eating completely, thinking you have to be very stringent with your diet to see results.” That’s not true.

RELATED: 5 Worst Eating Habits for Sugar Cravings, Says Dietitian

Shutterstock

This is a variation of the “eating very little” misguided habit above. You skip breakfast, lunch, or dinner in an effort to cut way back on calories. “Unless you’re intermittent fasting and there’s some consistency to your eating plan, and waiting long hours to eat, will end up making you so hungry that you eat back all of the calories you would’ve eaten at your meal, and then some,” warn The Nutrition Twins.

Shutterstock

Obsessing over counting daily fat grams is not only not fun, but it’s also not healthy. “Fat is not the enemy and it’s healthy to include some healthy fats like nuts and olive oil when trying to lose weight,” says registered dietitian nutritionist Lisa Young, PhD, RDN, author of Finally Full, Finally Slim. Fat is satiating, so, even though it’s high calorie, it can help you lose weight.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

“The key is to include healthy fats in reasonable portions,” says Dr. Young. “Enjoy 1/4 cup of nuts as a snack and use one tablespoon of full-fat salad dressing (olive oil-based) on your salad.”

That’s another mistake dieters make that leads to unhealthy behaviors. “Fat-free foods don’t fill you up, so you end up eating larger portions of fat-free food which ultimately leads to overeating and intensified cravings,” says Shapiro. “When you remove fat from foods, it is often replaced with sugar to improve the taste.” Excess sugar eaten turns to fat, which is exactly what you’re trying to prevent.

Mironov Vladimir/Shutterstock

The low-carb obsession goes hand in hand with another—loading up on protein. “Many people think if I cut carbs, I can eat all the protein (think meat!) that I want without paying attention to portion sizes,” says Dr. Young. “I’ve seen clients gain weight using this approach.” A better way to eat for weight loss, says Dr. Young: “Include foods from all the food groups and pay attention to portion sizes as well as hunger levels.”

Shutterstock

Eating a vegan diet can be healthy and certainly can help with weight loss. But if you don’t go about it the right way, you can end up gaining weight. “We see this frequently in our practice—a few servings of nut butter, several tablespoons of olive oil, and a big bowl of granola or pasta, and you may already meet your calorie needs for the day,” say The Nutrition Twins. If you go vegan, you may need to be extra vigilant about avoiding excess carbs, nuts, oils, and other calorie-dense foods. And remember: You can get a good dose of satiating protein from plants. Here are 20 Vegetables Ranked By Protein.

Life is a battleground, we need to keep fighting until our appointed time on earth comes. So, in this post, you will see the best of the best life tips you have never heard before. These tips are life-changing and can change you immediately. Let’s go!

1. Be independent

Hundreds of millions of people make this mistake. We depend on people like us. “he will get it done for me, she will get it done for me”. You rely heavily on people and guess what, you are making a big mistake.

There are a lot of people that have helped others and perhaps time changes for them, they become poor and rely on the people they have helped, guess what comes out at the end of this reliance? Disappointment, promises backed by failures, etc.

Who are you depending on? Who is that person you can’t do without when getting things in your life done? If there is anyone, you are making a big mistake. And starting today, all you have to do is add a prefix – what if!

“What if my friend stops helping me, what if I get disappointed by people I trust with my life, what if they neglect me and turn me down”.

A man or woman that depends on people like him is equal to a feeble pillar holding the four corners of a house. What happens when the feeble pillar falls? The man’s house falls down super-flat. Your trust should only be in Jesus. Man can fail us at any time but God is always faithful till his Kingdom comes.

2. Love your neighbor as yourself

The gravity of this word is enough to shatter the whole earth into pieces.

Only if the whole world just kept this simple commandment Christ Jesus gave then, there will be no murders, poverty, greediness, anger, envy, betrayal, disappointment, etc.

Why are there such things in the world? Because we hate ourselves. As long as you are fine all is well. You care about yourself only, selfish, you have and yet you cannot give.

Those are the characteristics of over 90% of the 7.6 billion humans on earth. Why can’t you do to others what you would have them do to you? Why can’t you help that suffering neighbor who needs food? Then, a lot of people will say

“Go away from here beggar, what did you do with your youth, I can’t give you a dime, beggar”. Why are we so cruel? This is the best tip you must dear to your heart.

No matter what you have, no matter how little or in whatever way you can help. Help people, show them love, love them as you love yourself. Don’t forget this, today’s beggar, uneducated, debtor, poor person, etc can later become the greatest person in the world tomorrow.

“Don’t settle for what life gives you; make life better and build something.” — Ashton Kutcher

3. Have a growth mindset

A growth mindset is what makes one successful and go far in life. However, a fixed and stagnated mindset throws one into jeopardy of life.

A lot of people have a fixed mindset, what they believe is what they believe, nothing you say on earth can change their mindset, they are the most educated in the world so they don’t need to learn any further. Did you have a fixed or growth mindset?

A growth mindset leads to success, achievements, happiness, learning more, and becoming better. On the other hand, a fixed mindset leads to complacency, pride, lack of achievement, ignorance, the stagnancy of the mind, etc.

Let’s see an example of someone with a fixed mindset:

Cait tells Alice: Alice stop being so proud it’s annoying.

And Alice responds:

“How dare you say I am proud, I am not. I am the most humble woman on earth”. In the example, Alice with a fixed mindset has a fixed mindset. However, what she does not know is that she is in the darkness of her ignorance. She is ignorant of the fact that she is a proud person thus, she can’t see it.

People with a fixed mindset are ignorant. You must never have a fixed mindset. Always be willing to learn and to grow with humility. Pride can take you nowhere.

4. Forgive everyone and give as many second chances as you can

A lot of people have done all they could to be happy and have peace. But, they find out that happiness is not just there and that peace of mind is absent.

Why is that? It is because you have a lot of grudge against people that have offended you. Yes, we know, it pained you to your heart, and what next? Keep malice? But, do you know what that unforgiveness does to you?

I call it the seed of unforgiveness because it plants a seed in your heart and this seed further grows to become hatred, depression, lack of freedom, zero peace, etc.

If in only one person’s heart are all these things, then a person like that can never know peace and happiness. For example, if you were to go to a party with your friends and you hear that perhaps the other friend that you keep malice with is coming to the same party.

Naturally, the only thing you would think of is not going to the party anymore because you want to avoid the person at all costs. And what does that add to you? It doesn’t add instead, it subtracts from your life because you could have gone to the party, had fun, and even have new friends or even new opportunities.

If not for anything will you forgive people, forgive them for the sake of God, for the sake of Christ Jesus. Because if you cannot forget the trespass of people, don’t expect God to forgive you. Forgive everyone, give them as many second chances as possible.

Mind you, they can still mess up and make terrible mistakes all you have to do is keep forgiving them. This may not be so easy to the flesh. However, it is only The Spirit of God that can make you forgive the trespass of people. Without The Holy Spirit, it is impossible to do so.

5. Love God

Do you love God? Are you a child of God? Do you believe in Christ Jesus? Even if the rest of the tips on these lists do not resonate with you, I want you to hold this very important to your heart which is to Love God with all your heart, soul, and strength.

And you can do that only by being a child of God. This life is too short. It is like a vapor, it is nothing. Life is more like an empty barrel that makes noise. You will grow old, your strength will leave you and you will die but, what happens after that? Where are you going to spend the rest of your eternity?

We’ve all been there. We’re driving along, minding our own business, when we see that little notification pop up on our phone. It could be a text from a friend, a Facebook notification, or even just an email. And before we know it, we’re reaching for our phone to take a quick glance.

But what we don’t realize is that taking our eyes off the road, even for a split second, can have devastating consequences. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more than 3,100 people were killed in crashes involving distracted drivers in 2019 alone.

And while most of us are aware of the dangers of texting and driving, we often don’t think about other activities that can be just as distracting. Eating, drinking, fiddling with the radio, and even talking to passengers can all take our attention away from the task at hand: driving.

So what can we do to make sure we’re staying focused on the road? Here are a few tips:

1. Put Your Phone Away: It Can Wait

This one might seem obvious, but it’s worth repeating. Putting your phone away, or better yet, turn it off, is the best way to avoid the temptation of looking at it while you’re driving. No one wants to get into an accident, and although we like to think that we can multi-task, it’s just not worth the risk when it comes to driving. So put your phone away, turn off any notifications that might tempt you, and focus on the task at hand: driving safely. If you need to use your phone for directions, pull over first to enter the address or type in a new destination.

We’ve all seen the public service announcements and read the news stories about the dangers of texting and driving. It’s become such a problem that many states have made it illegal to text while behind the wheel. And for good reason – according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, texting while driving increases your chances of being in an accident by 23%. In connection with this, Tennessee, Delaware, Wyoming, Texas, Montana, North Dakota, Colorada, Iowa, Maine, and Illinois are the top ten states that had the highest numbers of distracted driving fatalities. These statistics are alarming not just for victims, but also for legal professionals who handle these cases. In addition, the increase in the likelihood of accidents is one that is simply not worth the risk.

2. Eat Before You Get In The Car

We’ve all been there: we’re driving along and we start to get a little hungry. So we reach for a snack or even stop at a drive-thru to grab something to eat. But eating while driving can be just as distracting as texting and can lead to dangerous situations. If you’re feeling peckish, try to eat before you get in the car.

3. Limit Your Passengers

Having a conversation with a passenger is one of the most common distractions while driving. And while it might seem like harmless banter, it can quickly take your attention away from the road. If you need to have a conversation, try to limit it to one other person in the car. And if you have kids in the car, make sure they’re occupied with something so they’re not constantly asking you questions.

4. Avoid Using Your Phone Or GPS For Directions

As mentioned before, using your phone or GPS for directions can be a major distraction. If you can, try to enter your destination before you start driving. And if you need to make a change while you’re on the road, pull over to the side of the road first.

5. Keep Your Eyes On The Road

This might seem like an obvious one, but it’s important to remember. No matter what else is going on in the car, always keep your eyes on the road and be aware of your surroundings. Pay attention to other vehicles, pedestrians, and any potential obstacles or hazards on the road. And don’t forget to check your mirrors frequently! This way, you’ll be able to react quickly if something unexpected happens.

6. Know Your Car

Make sure you know how your car works before getting behind the wheel. This includes understanding features like cruise control and blind-spot detection, as well as being familiar with where all the controls are located. If you’re ever in an emergency situation, you’ll be glad you took the time to learn about your car.

7. Stay Calm

Road rage is never a good idea. If someone cuts you off or drives erratically, resist the urge to retaliate. Instead, stay calm and focus on getting to your destination safely.

Following these tips can help you stay focused on the road and avoid dangerous situations. And remember, even if you’re not texting and driving, you could still be distracted. So always be aware of your surroundings and drive safely.

Today I’d like to focus on a negative habit that creates insecurity within, erodes self-esteem and can make you feel quite unhappy with your own life.

It’s something that has sprung up as we have moved a part of our lives on to the internet and social media.

And that habit is to compare yourself and your life to other people’s highlight reels.

What do I mean by that?

That it’s so easy to start comparing your life to the lives of friends, old classmates or celebrities of all sizes as you each day see how perfect their homes, kids, love lives are and how filled their lives are with wonderful moments.

But is that their whole lives that is shared on Facebook and Instagram?

Usually not.

It’s just the highlight reel of that person’s life. The positive moments.

And it’s natural thing really, to want to share such moments or days with your friends or followers.

Now, for some people this may develop into something destructive.

Into a way of creating a more perfect image of one’s life to get that hit of instant gratification as people add positivity via comments, likes and upvotes.

But everyone has problems at times.

They fail. Get sick. Have flaws, bad days or negative habits.

No matter who you are or what you look like or do.

I have those issues too. Just like anyone else.

I still stumble and fall on some days. Doubt myself or am pessimistic from time to time. That’s human.

So don’t strive for being perfect or measuring yourself against someone else’s highlight reel.

Here are three healthier steps you can take instead:

Step 1: Compare in a smarter way.

There will always be people who have more or nicer things than you.

Or are better than you at something. No matter what you do.

So if you want to compare then do it in a way that won’t make you feel envious and inferior.

Do it by comparing yourself to yourself. See how far you have come. Look back at the obstacles you have overcome, what you have learned and how you have grown.

Step 2: Spend your energy and time on what matters the most.

Step by step spend the hours in your day and week on building habits that will make you a better person and a happier one too.

For example, aim at being optimistic 70% of the time if you have been it maybe 50% in the past month.

Or spend more of your weekly free time on your favorite hobby or on sharpening a valuable skill.

Step 3: Let go of what drags you down.

If necessary unsubscribe or remove social media accounts from your flow if you feel they are dragging you down and lowering your self-esteem. Even if those things might also be entertaining right now.

Life isn’t just a highlight reel no matter who shares it.

So look beyond that, remember that everyone is human and stop comparing yourself to that limited view of someone.

In the long run you’ll be happy that you did.

How to Stop Buying Stuff You Don”t Need: 11 Effective Steps

We know how addictive shopping can be.

But if you’re ready to stop buying unnecessary things, these 11 tips can help you move in a healthier (and less cluttered) direction.

1. Know Your Triggers.

Those stress-shopping purchases add up. And a big part of avoiding those expenses is to remove the triggers that make them more likely.

Think about the last few times you bought something you didn’t need and ask some questions:

What were you feeling before and after the purchase?

What were you trying to escape or to avoid thinking about?

How long did it take for you to return to your baseline emotional state?

When you get there, how desperate are you for another high?

What are your go-to apps, stores, or products?

Only when you know your triggers can you take steps to minimize them.

2. Purge Your Inbox

One of those triggers might be emails with special deals, especially if you’re a bargain shopper. Ask yourself when you’re most vulnerable to promotional emails for products you’re most likely to buy.

Then unsubscribe from all retailer emails — especially those that tempt you with things that look good but that you don’t really need.

3. Go for Quality Over Quantity

Those special “deals” in the seasonal aisle of your local supermarket are usually low-quality items. Chances are, it’s a matter of weeks before they’ll end up in the trash or in a donation box.

Instead, if you really need an item like what you see on those discount shelves, do some research and look for something of higher quality. Instead of trying to get a carload of semi-useful items for less money, focus on finding a few high-quality items that will last.

4. Get Clear on Your Values and Goals

When you know what’s important to you, you’re less likely to shop brands or stores that don’t share your values. Otherwise, it’s too easy to justify taking advantage of every “mega sale” or bargain that shows up in an ad, an email, or in your mailbox.

Get clear on what you want to accomplish this year or in the next three years. Then make it a priority to only support businesses that share your values and support your goals.

5. Find a Support System

Talk to someone about your spending habits and what’s behind them. Get your friends and supportive family members in the loop. Some of them might have some helpful insights on how to stop buying things you don’t need.

Enlist their help in controlling your urges to spend money on things that look tempting in the moment, but that will ultimately end up in the trash bin (or donate pile).

6. Set a Budget and Track Your Spending.

The more conscious you are of the money coming in and going out, the easier it is to see whether you can afford something you want. Unless you’re comfortable with mounting debt, you need to spend less than you earn. Budgeting can help with that.

At the very least, it gives you a detailed breakdown of what you’re earning, what you’re spending, and how you’re spending it. And seeing the impact of your spending (e.g., the mounting credit card bills) can motivate you to take corrective action.

7. Plan Your Shopping

Unplanned shopping is an Achilles heel for most of us, especially when we’re tired, stressed, or in need of a pick-me-up.

If you have a budget set up and know how much you can afford to spend each month, you can plan your fun shopping around the things you want most. Give yourself enough time to consider thoughtfully what items will bring you the most enjoyment.

Set specific days, times, and spending limits, and you’re less likely to go overboard.

8. Find Other Ways to Boost Your Mood

Shopping shouldn’t be the only way you know how to make yourself feel better. Whatever the reason you’re feeling low, consider the following no-cost pick-me-ups:

Go for a walk.

Make yourself a favorite food or drink

Play music that soothes or energizes you

Take a power nap (not always possible, we know)

Call or text a friend or supportive family member.

9. Impose a Waiting Period

When you find something you like but don’t really need, force yourself to leave it in your shopping cart for at least three days.

Close the tab or leave the store to get away from temptation. Set a day and time to revisit your cart after those 72 hours are up.

Chances are, your interest in that item will diminish somewhat in favor of new discoveries. If those aren’t necessary, either, impose the same waiting period.

10. Pretend You’re Moving

Take inventory of what you have and separate the stuff you don’t need, use, or love. Use the Marie Kondo method, if that works for you, or take it room by room — as long as you go through everything.

When you finish, take a moment to appreciate your newly decluttered space. And decide what it really needs (if anything) before doing any more shopping.

11. Be Honest About Why You Buy Things You Don’t Need

Most times, when you’re buying things you don’t really need, you’re not thinking about the items in your cart.

You’re thinking about specific changes you want to see in your life or in yourself — whether that’s clearer or younger-looking skin, the attention of your crush, or a chance at a better life.

The more clearly you see what you really want, the easier it is to see how lousy all that stuff is at providing it.

FAQ About Buying Stuff You Don’t Need

Now that you have a better idea of how to stop buying stuff you don’t need, let’s tackle some of the questions you might have.

Why do we buy things we don’t need?

Most of us buy stuff we don’t need for one (or more) of the following four reasons:

We’re trying to escape something.

We’re surrounded by other shoppers (it’s contagious).

We’re not aware of how much we’re spending and what it costs us.

We’re trying to fix something we don’t like about ourselves.

It doesn’t help that “shopper’s high” is a real thing. So, which of these reasons sound most familiar to you?

What is it called when you can’t stop buying things?

It’s called a shopping addiction. Yes, it’s possible to become addicted to that shopper’s high — the dopamine rush you get when you buy something or when it arrives. Five to eight percent of Americans suffer from shopping addiction; 80 percent of those are women.

This online shopping addiction scale can give you a better idea of how strong your shopping compulsion is.

If you’ve ever struggled with an addiction, you know easy it is to replace one with another. And what you call it has a huge impact on what you do about it.

What happens when you stop buying stuff you don’t need?

Stuff stops showing up in the mailbox. It’s depressing, at first, because you miss that dopamine hit when a package arrives.

But when you see your credit card debts going down and find it easier to pay bills and buy things you need, you find a more meaningful (and sustainable) high. And you get good at finding mood-boosters that don’t endanger your financial well-being.

Are you ready to stop buying stuff you don’t need?

The marketers behind all the unnecessary stuff you buy want you to believe their product will satisfy your deepest desires. But they don’t know you.

Then again, they don’t have to. What they do know is why so many of us buy into their message: you need this to get what you want. They think they know you well enough to get you hooked on whatever they’re selling.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to prove them wrong.

With so much conflicting information out there, it can feel overwhelming to know where to start. As a registered dietitian with years of experience, I’m here to clear up the confusion and set you on the path to weight loss success. Here are 15 “weight loss” foods that actually don’t work. Read on—and to ensure your health and the health of others, don’t miss these 19 Ways You’re Ruining Your Body, Say Health Experts.

Diet yogurt is a popular choice for those who want to cut calories. It sounds good in theory, since diet yogurts are typically lower in calories, fat, and sugar than the regular version.

However, diet yogurts also tend to be more processed and contain more artificial ingredients. And without the fat present, diet yogurts are not as satisfying.

Fat, when consumed in moderation, is a nutrient that makes us feel more full and can therefore prevent overeating later on. If you’re a yogurt fan, don’t be afraid to opt for the full-fat version.

Shutterstock

Green tea is often touted as a weight loss miracle. While it has some health benefits, the research shows the amount of weight loss to be expected is likely minimal.

Adding a daily cup of green tea is not harmful, but it is unlikely to lead to a noticeable difference in your waistline.

Rice cakes are a snack food that is very low in calories. However, they are also very low in nutrients. Eating a low-calorie food without any nutritional value is simply not satisfying.

It will likely take a large amount of rice cakes to feel full, which defeats the purpose of trying to lose weight.

Shutterstock

If you’re a soda junkie, swapping regular for diet soda may sound like a good idea.

But, some research shows that drinking more artificially-sweetened beverages may actually increase the risk for sugar cravings and weight gain.

Shutterstock

There are several seemingly “healthy” ice cream brands out there that are lower in calories or sugar. But, they are really not much better for you.

If the sugar is reduced, chances are there is more saturated fat. If fat is reduced, chances are there is more sugar added.

Also, when you know you are having a lower-calorie version, it may be easier to justify overeating it. When this happens, you can end up consuming way more calories than you would if you just had a scoop of the real version!

Shutterstock

Seeing the word “veggie” in a product makes it sound healthy. But the truth is, veggie chips or veggie straws are really not any healthier than a potato chip.

Sure, they may be a little lower in fat, but they still pack a ton of sodium. Sodium is a weight loss deterrent, as it can cause your body to hold onto water weight.

While lean cuisines typically only pack around 250-350 calories per meal, they are loaded with sodium. The amount of sodium often is more than half your entire day’s worth! The calorie amount for some is also too low for a meal, which can lead to overeating later on.

While a few studies have shown short-term weight loss from eating frozen meals, in the long-term they don’t teach you how to eat or how to sustain that weight loss once you get bored with them.

Fat-free skim milk has often been purported as the healthier choice compared to whole milk.
Celery juicing is a widely popular weight loss trend. However, there is no scientific research to prove it works.

Additionally, many commercial celery juice products also contain other juices to balance the bitter celery flavor, which contain added sugars.

Apple cider vinegar, or ACV, is one of the hottest weight loss foods right now.
Coconut oil is often promoted as a fat-burning food. However, there is a lack of consistent evidence on its role in weight loss.
If you have a sweet tooth or like your coffee with tons of sugar, you may have tried switching to artificial sweeteners like Equal or Splenda. It’s unclear however how much better these sweeteners really are for you.

Artificial sweeteners taste significantly sweeter than regular sugar, and may actually increase cravings for sweet foods.

With that being the case, you are better off gradually reducing your total sugar intake, rather than adding more artificial sweeteners.
