We all know that stress can be a huge hindrance to our productivity and wellbeing. It can cause us to feel overwhelmed, anxious, and downright miserable. And if left unchecked, chronic stress can lead to some serious health problems. That’s why it’s important for us to find ways to relieve stress on a regular basis. In this article, we will discuss six things that can be very effective in relieving stress!

Breathing Exercises

When we are worried, our breathing becomes shallow and rapid. This might cause lightheadedness and even dizziness. That is why it is critical to concentrate on deep, abdominal breathing while stressed. Breathing exercises can aid in the reduction of one’s heart rate and the calming of one’s nerves. Namely, when you’re concerned about something, focus on taking deep abdominal breaths for a count of four before exhaling very slowly for a count of eight. To get the most impact from this breathing exercise, practice it for at least five minutes daily.

Do A Physical Activity

It is a well-known fact that physical activity can help relieve stress. When we are physically active, our bodies release chemicals called endorphins. These endorphins interact with the receptors in our brains and produce a positive feeling – similar to that of morphine. This “runner’s high” can be an excellent way to forget about our troubles and relax. Even if you’re not a fan of running, there are plenty of other activities that can help reduce stress levels. Any type of exercise – whether it’s yoga, weightlifting, or simply going for a walk – can be beneficial.

Hit The Sauna

For hundreds of years, saunas have been employed to unwind and detoxify the body. The heat of the sauna can help improve circulation, relieve muscle tension, and calm the mind. For example, if you haven’t heard about the world of barrel saunas, you’re in for a treat! Barrel saunas are shaped like, well, barrels. This unique design allows them to retain heat better than traditional saunas, making for a more relaxing experience. Also, a typical sauna session lasts around 15-20 minutes – the perfect length of time to unwind and de-stress.

Get A Massage

When there is tension in our muscles, it can lead to pain and discomfort. Massages are an excellent way to relax tight muscles and ease stress-related aches and pains. In addition, the human touch can be very calming and comforting. You can choose to get a professional massage or give yourself a self-massage. Either way, you’re sure to feel more relaxed and refreshed afterward. The best types of massages for stress relief are Swedish massages, hot stone massages, and aromatherapy massages.

Listen To Calming Music

Music has a profound effect on our moods and emotions. Listening to calming music can help us relax, reduce anxiety, and ease stress. The best type of music for stress relief is slow, soft, and relaxing. Instrumental music is often the most effective, as it doesn’t have any lyrics that could possibly trigger negative emotions. But ultimately, it is up to you to decide what type of music helps you relax and de-stress.

Nurture Yourself

When we are stressed, it is easy to forget about taking care of ourselves. We might neglect our diets, forego exercise, and get less sleep. However, it is important to remember that self-care is crucial during times of stress. Make sure to eat healthy foods, get plenty of rest, and find time for activities that you enjoy. This will help your body and mind to feel refreshed and better able to cope with stress. In addition, try to schedule some “me time” into your day. This might be anything from reading a book, relaxing in the bath, or going for a stroll. Just make sure to do something that you enjoy and makes you feel good!

Spend Time In Nature

There is something about being in nature that just makes us feel good. The most common reasons that people visit nature are because they feel refreshed and rejuvenated after being in its presence. Perhaps it’s the fresh air, the birdsong, or the sunlight streaming through the trees. Whatever it is, spending time in nature can be very beneficial for our mental health. Studies have shown that spending time in nature can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. So go for a walk in the park, sit by a river, or just spend some time in your backyard. You’ll be sure to feel more relaxed and at ease afterward.

There are many different things that can help relieve stress. Some people find that exercise is a great way to reduce their stress levels, while others may prefer to listen to calming music or spend time in nature. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide what works best for you. Just remember to take care of yourself and make time for activities that you enjoy. With a little effort, you can easily reduce your stress levels and improve your overall wellbeing.

Weight gain and obesity have become a common problem worldwide. A sedentary lifestyle, busy schedule and readily available unhealthy/packaged processed foods have become significant contributors to obesity.

Furthermore, most people only focus on exercise and neglect the significance of a healthy diet in an attempt to reduce weight. However, many different types of diet present effectively help in weight loss if appropriately adopted for a short time.

Low-carb diets help lose weight. They also help combat other health issues like diabetes. The low-carb diet plan has become popular because of its productive and fast results or noticeable changes.

Weight Loss With Low Carb Diet: Overview

When you follow a low-carb diet, the body uses the stored fat to get energy because of a lack of carbohydrates. As a result, you burn more fats. Another principle for weight loss is to stay on a calorie deficit. When you follow a low-carb diet, you consume fewer calories as well. Therefore, people often adopt this diet for weight loss.

Weight loss includes a calorie deficit diet with restriction of high carb foods like sweets, chips, bread etc. People on a low-carb diet start losing weight by the end of 2 weeks. However, these diets are effective for a short period, and you should not follow them for a long time. The keto diet is an example of a low-carb diet.

Following a low-carbohydrate diet increases ketones in our body, which breaks down fat to use as an energy source. Therefore, it significantly lowers weight but following it for an extended time will be dangerous for the body. It leads to various health problems such as cramps, bone erosion (side effect of ketosis), fatigue, disturbed menstrual cycle, constipation, anxiety, etc.

A low-carb diet restricts the consumption of high-carb foods like sweets, pasta, and bread. In addition, it restricts high-carb fruits and vegetables. On a low-carb diet, the total carbohydrate consumption is limited to 50 to 150 grams daily. Because every gram of carbohydrate provides four calories, a daily carbohydrate intake of 200 to 500 calories is reasonable.

The remaining daily calories, thus, are derived from protein and fat sources. This diet is rich in protein, fat, and nutrient-dense veggies. It also demands avoiding carbohydrates found in grains and potatoes. Dairy foods that are specifically low fat can be excluded in the low-carb diet.

Foods to Consume

Non-Veg: Egg, lean chicken, tuna fish, sardines, salmon, herring, etc.

Vegetables: Spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussels sprouts, kale, zucchini, cucumber, lettuce, carrots, etc.

Fruits: Apples, oranges, watermelon, star fruit, lemon, green apple, pears, blueberries, strawberries, etc.

Nuts and seeds: Almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, etc

Fats and oils: Coconut oil, butter, olive oil, fish oil, etc

Foods to Avoid

Sugar: Soft drinks, fruit juices, agave, candy, ice cream, etc., added sugar.

Refined grains: Wheat, rice, barley and rye, bread, cereal, and pasta.

Trans fats: Hydrogenated or partly hydrogenated oils

Dairy products: Milk, yoghurt, cottage cheese, etc

Highly processed foods

Starchy vegetables: Beets, corn, white potatoes, green peas, etc.

Grains and legumes that contain carbohydrates.

The HealthifyMe Note

Low-carb diets are a type of fad diet; these diets result in temporary or short-term weight loss. It does assist in rapidly losing weight but also rapidly increases weight once you discontinue it. Moreover, such fad diets restrict dairy, legumes, grains, and fibre-rich foods, which deprive the body of other essential micronutrients and minerals, outweighing the advantages of a low-carb diet. In addition, a low-carb diet may cause metabolic issues, weakness, headaches, bad breath, and other health concerns.

Few Popular Types of Low-Carb Diets

Ketogenic Diet

The ketogenic diet is rich in fat and low in carbs. A keto diet’s purpose is to limit carbs low enough, resulting in your body entering a metabolic condition known as ketosis.

As a result, the body’s insulin levels drop, producing many fatty acids from its fat reserves. Most of these fatty acids get carried to the liver, which converts them to ketones. Ketones refer to water-soluble compounds that provide your brain with energy. Consequently, the brain relies heavily on ketones rather than carbohydrates.

Some variations of this diet also limit protein intake, as excess protein can diminish the number of ketones produced. As per studies, the ketogenic diet helps lose body fat and is therefore popular among people, especially bodybuilders. In a ketogenic diet, carbs are usually restricted to less than 50 grams daily and occasionally as few as 20–30 grams.

Atkins Diet

The Atkins diet is well-known for its low carbohydrate content. This diet is divided into stages to help you lose weight and primarily emphasises protein and fats while limiting carbohydrate intake. The Atkins diet assists in weight loss by changing current eating habits. Furthermore, it claims to be a healthy way of eating for the rest of one’s life.

As per studies, it is a considerably healthy way to lose weight, increase energy, or improve health conditions, including high blood pressure or metabolic syndrome, though more research is needed to back this.

Low-Carb Diet

A low-carb or carb-restricted diet is what it’s generally named. In comparison to a conventional Western diet, this meal plan is lower in carbohydrates and higher in protein.

Meats, fish, eggs, nuts, seeds, vegetables, fruits, and healthy fats get prioritised. Individuals should avoid high-carb foods, such as grains, dairy products high in carbs, potatoes, sugary beverages, and high-sugar junk meals.

The HealthifyMe Note

People with insulin resistance and diabetes have an increased risk of weight gain. A low-carb diet reduces weight and lowers blood glucose levels for a short time. However, in the long term, the disadvantages of a low-carb diet exceed the advantages. Adopting healthy eating habits and appropriate lifestyle behaviours is critical for justifying the weight-loss journey.

Conclusion

An effective weight management program is the keystone of healthy living. Adopting healthy eating and appropriate lifestyle behaviour is crucial for a sustainable weight-loss journey.

In addition, we need to understand the underlying essentials of eating right, the nutrients necessities, physical activity, correct lifestyle modifications, and a holistic advent to weight loss. Shortcut weight loss methods can never match a healthy and sustainable alternative.

Fad diets have gained a lot of popularity in a short period. But health experts and registered dieticians do not believe that these fad diets such as low-carb diets are beneficial in the long term. Avoid following fad diets that restrict food choices or food groups.

A balanced diet with necessary modifications to your health goals will produce your desired results. A successful weight loss journey combines several factors, from changing your lifestyle to modifying your foods. Following highly restricted diets, ignoring carbs may give you short-term weight loss, but a healthy and consistent weight loss needs patience and time.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q. How much weight can you lose on a low-carb diet in a week?

A. A low-carb diet requires a strict regime and constant monitoring. It involves eating only about 50 to 150 grams of carbs a day. Provided a person adheres to a low-carb diet, one can easily lose about 10 pounds of body weight in 5 weeks, which is about 2 pounds per week.

Q. How much weight can you lose in a month on low carb?

A. Weight reduction requires time. In many circumstances, a weekly weight loss of 1–2 pounds (0.5–1 kg) is a reasonable target. Weight loss occurs more quickly for some people than for others. It is impossible to predict because each individual is unique. However, most people lose 10 pounds or over in the first month of adopting a low-carb diet.

Q. Can you lose weight just by eating low carbs?

A. Low carbohydrate diets with an adequate amount of protein and fats are pretty efficient for weight loss. Restricting carbohydrates reduces appetite and leads to weight reduction without having to watch calories. The amount of carbohydrates a person needs to lose weight varies based on age, gender, body shape, and degree of exercise.

Q. What happens when you cut carbs for 2 weeks?

A. A low-carb diet, such as keto or the first stage of the Atkins diet, puts the body under nutritional ketosis. By breaking down fat, the liver produces ketones, a substance when insufficient sugar is available in the body to function. This process takes around two weeks after the commencement of any low-carb diet.

Q. Will cutting carbs reduce belly fat?

A. Low carb diets can result in rapid water weight loss, giving people speedy results. Within 1–2 days, most people notice a change on the weight scale. One cannot target a particular part of the body for fat loss. However, a low-carb diet helps shed visceral fat surrounding the belly and organs. Hence, cutting down carbs may help cut down belly fat.

Q. How long does it take to lose 40 pounds on keto?

A. In a keto diet, weight loss depends on various factors. Moreover, most weight lost in the first few weeks is a person’s water weight. However, suppose one follows a consistent keto diet accompanied by regular exercise and quality sleep. In that case, one can expect to lose about 1-2 pounds a week, which translates to about 4-5 months to drop 40 pounds.

Q. Why am I not losing weight if I am in ketosis?

A. Ketosis does not necessarily result in weight loss. You must be in a calorie deficit for your metabolism to switch from burning food fat to burning stored body fat. One of the most common causes for people failing to lose weight while on the ketogenic diet is consuming too many carbohydrates. Carbohydrate consumption must get severely lowered to achieve ketosis, a metabolic condition wherein the body burns fat and not glucose to release energy.

Q. Why am I not losing weight when I barely eat?

A. The metabolism of a person decides the burning of calories. If a person has a higher metabolism, their body burns calories faster. The body is highly adaptive. If barely any food is consumed by a person, then the body functions in a ‘survival mode’ by reducing its metabolic rate. It means the body burns fewer calories than usual, and weight does not decrease. The best way to reduce weight is to work out regularly, and consume nutritious food, while still being in a calorie deficit.

Q. Is under 100 carbs a day low carb?

A. No fixed number of calories must be consumed to be considered ‘low carb’. The number of carbs considered ‘low carb’ also depends on the objective of such a diet. For example, if the aim is to lose weight, then consuming about 100-150 grams of carbs per day would be considered a low-carb diet relative to an average diet. However, if one wants to reach a state of ‘ketosis’, that number might have to be reduced to about 50grams to be considered low carb.

Q. How long should you stay on a low-carb diet?

A. A low-carb diet is very restrictive. Most people have long struggled with adhering to such a diet. A carb deficiency for an extended period leads to headaches, fatigue, cramps, etc. It is because the brain and tissues require a constant supply of glucose for proper brain function and tissue repair. As a result, a low-carb diet should only be followed for a short period or until you obtain the desired results.

People have been using coconut oil for thousands of years because of its nutritional benefits. It contains many nutrients that help maintain health and a good diet. Coconut oil also improves metabolism, cognitive function, hair, and skin through fatty acids. With the increasing popularity of plant-based food choices, coconut oil has become popular. Its rich flavour and nutritional benefits make it one of the healthiest additions to your regular diet.

Besides keeping the skin and hair healthy, coconut oil helps in reducing body fat. The increased shift toward a western diet which includes unhealthy foods, fast foods, and processed food products, leads to increased obesity and poor health. However, research has found that coconut helps in fat loss, especially in the abdominal region. These research findings have made coconut oil a superfood used for reducing body fat and weight loss.

Coconut Oil: Brief History

Since ancient times, people have used coconut oil for its edible and healing properties. They draw out from coconut trees or palms in tropical and subtropical regions. It is traditionally made by crushing and pressing copra to extract the oil in West Africa. Its use is evident in many South America, Central America and the Indian continent, including Mele, Micro and Polynesia. In India, coconut bearing tree refers to as Kalpavriksha. Every part of the tree is helpful in some way. According to Ayurvedic medicine, Thisoil is essential for the body and mind. Coconut is a drupe with three layers, exocarp, husk of the fruit- mesocarp, and fruit- endocarp. Its fruit, coconut flesh, milk, water, and oil have intrinsic commercial value.

People use coconut oil for medicinal purposes such as treating hair loss, burns and heart diseases. They have also been used since ancient times to treat intestinal worms.

Nutritional Value of Coconut Oil

The nutritional value of coconut oil as per 100g :

Energy: 892 kcal

Total Lipid: 99.1 g

Fatty acids (Saturated): 82.5 g

Total Monounsaturated fatty acids: 6.33 g

Total Polyunsaturated fatty acids: 1.7 g

Calcium: 1 mg

Alpha Tocotrienol: 2.17 mg

Is Coconut Oil a Healthy Fat?

Coconut oil is derived from coconut and contains 60-70% fatty acids, 4-10% water, protein, and carbohydrates. It is rich in medium-chain fatty acids, which have beneficial effects on metabolism. MCFAs increase up to 85% when the oil draws out from fresh coconut meat. Medium-chain triglycerides present in this oil contain 10-12 carbon atoms. It has the highest source of lauric acid. Main coconut oil includes medium-chain fatty acids such as caprylic acid and capric acid. These lipids are readily metabolised and do not require adipose tissue-like long-chain fatty acids storage.

MCFAs have medium-chain instead of short- and long-chain fatty acids. They are transported directly from the digestive tract to the liver. Once they reach the liver, the energy sources begin the process of metabolism in ketone bodies. This oil metabolises energy and thus stores less fat. The MCFA present in coconut oil makes it different from other oils. Therefore coconut oil is an alternative treatment for many medical conditions. Coconut oil exhibits anti blennorrhagica, Antibronchitis, febrifugal, and antigingivitic properties. It contains zero cholesterol, fibre, vitamins, minerals, plant sterols and 80-90% saturated fat.

Coconut oil has a similar structure to sterols that mimic blood cholesterol. Also, plant sterols block the absorption of cholesterol in the body by mimicking the effect of blood cholesterol. Therefore, it improves the HDL: LDL ratio, which is beneficial for cardiovascular health.

Does Coconut Oil Reduce Body Fat?

Nowadays, people are using coconut oil as supplements for health benefits. Even though 90% of fat present in this oil is saturated fat and 9% unsaturated fat. But the structure of this oil is unique because of a rich amount of medium-chain glycerides. As a result, MCTs burn more calories which are efficient in losing weight.

MCTs are absorbed faster in the bloodstream and more efficiently than long-chain triglycerides. The faster absorption of MCTs stimulates a thermogenic effect in the body, increasing the amount of fat-burning. In addition, medium-chain fatty acids are more soluble than long-chain fatty acids and solubilised intestinal contents without micelles. Therefore, it results in faster absorption of fatty acids.

Coconut Oil: The Benefits

Boosts Metabolism

Some studies conclude that virgin coconut oil treats metabolic dysfunction, improves glucose tolerance, and promotes weight loss. Also, studies show long-term consumption of medium triglycerides among overweight women burned more calories than long-chain triglycerides consumption.

Metabolism of medium-chain fatty acids helps boost metabolism and increase energy. Increasing metabolism boosts the ability to burn fat. Some studies suggest that an increased dietary supply of medium-chain fatty acids during early age prevents excessive fat accumulation in adulthood.

Increases Satiety

Study shows that women who consumed around two tablespoons of coconut oil daily for 12 weeks didn’t gain more weight and indicated lower amounts of abdominal fat. Because of its protective property, coconut aids in digestion and boosts the immune system.

Studies show that coconut oil can reduce lipid levels in the blood, which is effective for cardiovascular health and weight loss. In addition, consuming This oil increases satiety because of its high saturated fat content. However, a 2018 study shows that eating coconut oil lowers the appetite and reduces the overall food intake.

This study aimed to determine which fatty acids are good for losing weight; MCTs or olive oil (long-chain fatty acids). They asked participants to eat 1800 kcal and 1500 kcal for men and women. The participants who ate MCT oil showed a more significant body weight loss than those who consumed long-chain fatty acids. Though both groups show reduced total body fat percentage and abdominal body fat, MCT results were more noticeable. In addition, they noticed that supplementation of MCTs improves fat oxidation.

In a study where participants were 24-51 years old, healthy obese individuals consumed 30 ml of virgin coconut oil thrice half an hour before every meal. It was a 6-week cycle to determine if it would reduce abdominal fat. The results showed a significant reduction in abdominal fat, especially in the male participants. It also reported a decline in individuals’ body fat percentage and BMI. The result of reducing belly fat is due to a decrease in the visceral fat present in the body. Decreased body fat percentage also helped improve lipid levels by lowering cholesterol and LDL levels.

Note:

The same research revealed a massive drop in body mass index and reduced waist size in the coconut oil group. In addition, it shows that this reduces elevated cholesterol levels and promotes body fat reduction in the abdominal area.

It helps to reduce excess calorie intake a day which is essential for weight loss. But it is advisable not to eat an excessive amount of coconut oil as it will spike cholesterol levels and defeats the purpose of weight loss. There are pieces of evidence that a diet rich in fat reduces the cravings for food rich in carbohydrates compared to low-fat diets.

Boosts Energy

People tend to follow low-calorie diets to shed extra weight. Though it sheds the extra pounds, it results in low energy levels, lethargy, and loss of muscles in individuals. Coconut oil boosts energy because of its high medium-chain fatty acid content. MCTs are directly transported to the liver and converted to ketones.

Ketones and ketone bodies are efficient energy sources that enhance energy reserve. They help improve workout performance and endurance, which results in weight loss. Studies suggest that intake of coconut oil provide performance-enhancing effects during training and workout regimen.

Numerous research on MCTs and body composition were analysed and published by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Journal. In addition, various studies and trials determined the effect of MCTs on body composition. They found that MCTs improve body composition by decreasing weight, circumference, and total body fat percentage.

A study conducted on 40 women aged 20-40 years shows the effect of a low-calorie diet and moderate exercise. There were two groups, and they were given two tablespoons of soybean and coconut oil daily for 12 weeks, respectively. They ask them to follow a low-calorie diet of 1000-1200 kcal with a 50-minute walk. The data showed an increase in HDL level in coconut oil and a decrease in HDL level in the soybean oil group. In addition, the study reported that individuals consuming coconut oil show a significant reduction in LDL cholesterol, while in the soybean oil group, the LDL levels increased.

Conclusion

With the increase in plant-based diet to reduce body fat, coconut oil is considered one of the healthiest choices. Because of the high amount of medium-chain fatty acids are used in a low-calorie diet to reduce body fat. In addition, This oil helps reduce overall cholesterol levels and increase HDL levels. There are pieces of evidence to prove that supplementation with it makes you lose weight. However, an increased intake of coconut oil can cause various health conditions, so you should take coconut oil in moderation. Current studies of coconut oil demonstrate only pure medium-chain fatty acids, not other benefits. The magnitude of this effect is not astounding, so further research is needed to prove the weight-reducing effects of coconut oil.

Diabetes is a serious and persistent health condition. Also, it affects a large segment of the population worldwide. Unhealthy dietary habits, sedentary lifestyles, stress, and obesity are the leading causes of diabetes. However, regular blood sugar monitoring, medication, and lifestyle modification reduce the associated symptoms and complications. Lifestyle modification includes a well balanced and nutritious diet, regular workouts and physical activity. A study suggests that low carbohydrates are effective in various aspects of diabetes management.

What is a Low-Carb Diet?

When a person has diabetes, their body cannot process carbohydrates effectively. In addition, a low-carbohydrate diet must have high protein and healthy fats. Moreover, it must restrict sugar and starch contents. Anything under 100–150 grams of carbohydrates per day is considered a low-carb diet. However, if you want to get into ketosis, the carb levels should be less than 50 grams per day.

Fruits, vegetables, lean protein, seafood, good fat, and whole grains make good low-carb diets. Also, you can take low-fat dairy products in moderation. It includes milk, greek yoghurt, cheese and likewise. In addition, they are a good source of protein and calcium. Both of which are essential for both diabetes and overall health.

A low-carb diet is a preferred choice for weight management. However, the health benefits are countless. One of the significant benefits is in preventing and managing diabetes. It is due to the nutrient value in low carb dietary contents. The rationale is simple. The fewer carbs you eat, the less your blood sugar level will spike.

Why Low Carb Diet for Diabetes?

Excessive carbohydrates are harmful, especially for diabetes. It spikes your blood sugar. In a healthy condition, your body breaks down carbohydrates into glucose. Also, this is because insulin initiates the cell to absorb it for cell functions. However, in diabetes, insulin deficiency or resistance prevents the cell from absorbing it. Thus, it results in the accumulation of glucose, raising blood glucose levels.

People with diabetes are often overweight or obese. Obesity also leads to diabetes, cardiac diseases and associated complications. So it is a double-edged sword. A healthy weight loss with specific lifestyle changes helps regulate the blood glucose level to a large extent.

It includes regulating blood glucose levels and weight loss. Additionally, it also helps in reducing the dose of anti-diabetic drugs. Moreover, it improves the overall health of the patients. Drastic improvements occur in people when the carb intake is 20 grams per day. However, there is no magic number. One can decide on an optimal level of carbs depending on the individual response to carbs. Therefore, you should consult a nutritionist to find out what works for you. In addition, you should measure blood sugar levels before and after a meal. As long as the blood sugar levels are below 140 mg/ DL, the carb levels are ok for you. Also, the kind of carbs plays an essential role. Vegetables, nuts and seeds are good examples of high-fibre carbs that help manage blood sugar levels in diabetes-friendly meal plans.

Importance of Carbohydrate

Carbohydrates are essential nutrients. It is one of the vital nutrients like protein and fat. The carbohydrates break down to glucose. The cells absorb them and use them as a source of energy. Additionally, the excess carbohydrates get stored in your muscles and liver.

Apart from energy sources, they are necessary for various functions. It includes bowel movements, digestion and likewise. Therefore a complete elimination of carbohydrates can have adverse reactions. It may result in malnutrition, electrolyte imbalance, dehydration, constipation and furthermore. Headaches, dizziness and fatigue are other signs.

Moreover, carbohydrate restriction may result in ketosis. It is the process by which your body breaks down fat into ketones for energy. Therefore, it may not be great for people with diabetes. Dizziness, headache, and fatigue are a few signs of ketosis.

Nonetheless, you should be discrete in choosing carbohydrates. Ensure to use complex carbohydrates which are in a low carb diet. It is nothing but whole grain products instead of refined variants. Whole grains are abundant in every nutrient for overall health. They help to regulate your sugar levels. Thus a low carb diet is preferred.

Check with your healthcare provider before altering your dietary habits. A proper guideline is essential, especially when you are under medication. In addition, it helps to avoid any complications.

Benefits of Low Carb with Diabetes

A low-carb diet must contain fruits, whole grains, poultry, eggs, nuts, seeds, cheese, etc. In addition, they are dense in nutrients. Also, they contain antioxidants, dietary fibres, healthy fats, essential nutrients, etc. Each element has the potential to regulate your blood glucose levels. Additionally, it promotes overall health. Finally, a well-crafted low carb diet helps boost your immunity, thus preventing you from multiple diseases and complications.

Read through to learn how a low carb diet helps manage diabetes.

Weight Loss

Obesity and being overweight can lead to Diabetes. A study states that a low carb diet effectively manages weight loss and obesity. Low-carb diets containing dense dietary fibres make you fuller for a more extended period. As a result, it prevents overeating. Moreover, low carb foods are excellent sources of potassium levels. Therefore, it regulates the fluid content in your body. Accumulation of fluid contributes to weight gain.

Reduces Triglycerides

People with diabetes are prone to the risk of elevated levels of triglycerides. It is because if you eat excess carbohydrates, it converts to fat. Research finds that a high carbohydrate diet can lead to high triglyceride levels. They are unhealthy fats or bad cholesterol that accumulate in your blood. It blocks blood circulation resulting in blood pressure and blood clot. Thus it can trigger cardiac diseases. In the case of diabetes, it is pretty common.

Low-carb diets must contain dietary fibres as they bind with unhealthy fats and get eliminated from the blood. Additionally, the healthy fats in a low carb diet increase HDL, preventing heart diseases.

Boosts Good Cholesterol

Look for foods that are good sources of omega-3 fatty acids. It helps to increase the good cholesterol HDL. But, on the other hand, it helps reduce the low-density lipoproteins LDL or harmful cholesterol. LDL is associated with heart diseases. Moreover, the risk factor for cardiac diseases is high in diabetes patients.

Reduces Blood Glucose Levels

Low carb diet rich in dietary fibres helps control your blood sugar significantly. Also, the fibre does not spike your glucose level. As a result, it initiates the body to synthesise more insulin. Thus a low carb diet stabilises blood glucose levels.

Moreover, a low carb diet must contain reasonable amounts of protein. Also, recent research shows that they have the properties to promote insulin synthesis. It results in the elimination of glucose from the blood. Thus proteins help in stabilising blood glucose.

Low Carbohydrate Foods for Diabetes

The success of a diet depends on your understanding of the keyword. For example, you may be eating very few carbs, but you are eating the wrong ones. For example, white bread, white pasta or white rice and sugar-laden cookies and pastries can harm you. Therefore, refrain from refined food products. They are devoid of any healthy nutrients.

Focus on the following foods which will help you manage diabetes better:

Vegetables

Please remember a simple thumb rule. Most vegetables that grow above the ground have low carbohydrates. Leafy vegetables, cauliflowers, tomatoes and Brussels sprouts are a few among them. Moreover, they have antioxidants that neutralise the radical cell injury, which induces diabetes. Additionally, most vegetables have a low glycemic index. That means they do not spike your glucose levels after eating.

Leafy green vegetables contain lutein. It is an essential nutrient for your eyes and vital for diabetes due to the higher risk for Diabetic neuropathy. It is a complication of diabetes that may result in blindness.

Fruits

Include fruits that have low carbohydrates. Apple, citrus fruits, and berries fall under this bracket. Moreover, they contain natural sugars. Fructose and sucrose don’t harm you like refined sugar. Moreover, most fruits are rich in potassium, an essential element that enhances insulin synthesis. As a result, potassium deficiency results in less insulin and high blood sugar. Additionally, dietary fibres prevent weight gain. All these factors help regulate blood sugar.

Low-Fat Dairy Products

A study states that low fat helps reduce body weight in diabetics. Moreover, dairy products are a good source of calcium. It strengthens your bones and also balances the electrolytes. Unfortunately, bone disorders and fluid imbalance occur in long term diabetes. Therefore dairy products help reduce such risks. Greek yoghurt, milk, and low-fat cheese have low carb options with healthy fats and proteins. Moreover, it has a low glycemic index.

Seafood

Seafood is high in protein, omega-3 fatty acids and low in carbohydrates. They are healthy fats that neutralise bad cholesterol. For example, Salmon, Prawns, Sardines, and Tuna are low carb seafood options. Also, cholesterol is a significant cause of heart disease. People with diabetes are at a high risk of cardiac disease. It is a complication of long term diabetes.

Please include fatty fish to prevent such complications. Moreover, seafood is a good source of protein. It inhibits the hunger hormone ghrelin and prevents hunger pangs. Thus it helps you control body weight also.

Dietary Fibre

Preventive Measures for Diabetes

Diabetes Type 2 is primarily a lifestyle disorder. However, you can prevent it to a large extent. Here are a few measures to prevent or reduce the risk of diabetes.

Stress Management

The stress hormone cortisol is released into your blood when you are stressed. A study says that stress interrupts insulin function. It increases the blood glucose levels in your body. Exercises, morning walks, and relaxation techniques likewise help to relieve stress.

Prevent Obesity

Obesity results in inflammation. Certain studies show unhealthy fats make your body resistant to insulin. That means your body cells are resistant to absorbing glucose. Insulin functions to transfer glucose to cells, thus causing an increase in glucose levels.

Unhealthy fats cause fat accumulation and blood clots along blood vessels. It results in blood pressure, cholesterol, cardiac diseases and much more. Therefore, an optimum body weight helps reduce the risk of diabetes along with its associated complications.

Quit Smoking and Alcohol

A study states that smoking is one of the causes of diabetes. Cigarettes contain nicotine. It affects your cells and results in inflammation. In addition, it restricts your body from responding to insulin, resulting in high blood sugar levels.

Research finds that alcohol increases the risk factor for diabetes. It damages the pancreatic cells and affects the synthesis of insulin. Therefore, it results in abnormal blood sugar levels.

Don’t Lead a Sedentary Lifestyle.

Physical inactivity results in weight gain and obesity and can trigger diabetes, blood pressure, cardiac diseases, etc. According to a study, exercise helps essentially in preventing such disorders. In addition, regular exercises strengthen your immunity and prevent various conditions.

Possible Side Effects of a Low-Carb Diet

Also, it includes constipation, muscle cramps, headache, dizziness and more. It may also affect your various systems in the long term due to nutritional deficiency.

If you are on any medication, ensure to alter your doses accordingly. Otherwise, it may result in a sudden drop in glucose levels resulting in hypoglycemia. Therefore seek a medical opinion before you opt for a low carb diet.

The Bottom Line

Since it’s been a trendy eating habit for a while now, you’ve likely already heard of intermittent fasting, or IF for short. If you’re trying to lower the number on the scale, variations of this diet offer minimalist approaches to losing weight.

“Any time we have a calorie deficit, there will be weight loss,” Jenny Fontana, NT, NCRC, NCFAC, who instructs certified nutrition coaches, tells Eat This, Not That!.

There are several different forms of intermittent fasting, some of which may be more practical weight loss interventions than others. A study recently published in JAMA Network highlighted three methods found to be particularly effective.

Related: Intermittent Fasting Can Lead to “Significant” Weight Loss, New Research Says

“This study is essentially a review of review articles. It demonstrates that the different forms of intermittent fasting (i.e., alternate day fasting, the 5:2 diet, and time-restricted feeding) are all effective weight loss interventions for people with obesity,” Krista Varady, PhD, co-author of the study and a nutrition professor at the University of Illinois, Chicago, told Medical News Today.

Beyond weight loss, IF also offers a wealth of science-backed health benefits—here are seven to be aware of. But first, here’s a breakdown of the three forms of intermittent fasting name-checked by Varady.

Alternate day fasting

Shutterstock

Followers of alternate day fasting adhere to a schedule that switches back and forth between eating and fasting. Those who abide by this diet alternate between one feast day and one fast day, which typically includes a 500-calorie meal.

“The trick is to make sure you are still eating healthy on days when you are not fasting,” Heather Hanks, MS CAM, nutritionist and medical advisor at Medical Solutions BCN, tells Eat This, Not That!. “If you overindulge in calories from refined sugars and carbs, you’ll throw your insulin and hunger hormone levels off and wind up storing more glycogen than you’re burning.”

Healthline notes that “the most popular version of this diet is called ‘The Every Other Day Diet’ by [Varady], who has conducted most of the studies on ADF.”

5:2 diet

Shutterstock

Followers of the 5:2 diet eat an unrestricted diet for five days of the week and fast for the remaining two.

When it comes to long term compliance with the first two diets on this list, Shadi Vahdat, MD, the medical director at LiveWell Integrative Medicine, offers a word of caution.

“While the alternate day fasting, 5:2 diet, and time-restricted feeding can all be effective in weight loss, reduction of body fat and the associated metabolic improvements that come with them, long term compliance with the alternate-day fasting or 5:2 diet can become very challenging,” Vahdat tells Eat This, Not That!.

Time-restricted feeding

Shutterstock

There aren’t calorie restrictions in time-restricted feeding, but followers of this method only eat during a daily window of four to 10 hours. Fasting occurs outside of that designated eating window.

“The most practical and feasible option for a lot of people turns out to be time-restricted feeding,” Vahdat tells Eat This, Not That!. “If done correctly with daily overnight fasting of anywhere between 12-14 hours, then the benefits can be obtained long-term with none to minimal side effects.”

“The gut is often referred to as the second brain and therefore what we feed it affects so many other processes throughout our bodies. In fact, research regarding the effect diet has on the microbiome and therefore obesity is being increasingly studied. To support a healthy microbiome, the healthy or ‘good’ bacteria in the gut need to be nourished and encouraged to grow into a diverse microbial community. You can consume a nutrient-dense diet by: (1) filling at least half of your plate with vegetables at most meals, (2) Including probiotic foods or supplements, (3) consuming plenty of fiber-rich foods (prebiotics) to feed those healthy gut microbes, and (4) limiting alcoholic beverages as much as possible.” –Angela L.
“Have at least 20 grams of protein from foods such as dairy, eggs, tofu, seafood, and lean meat, at every meal and 10 at snacks. Protein keeps you fuller for longer and helps you control hunger. Also, the body uses more energy to digest protein, which provides another advantage.” –Elizabeth Ward, MS, RDN and co-author of The Menopause Diet Plan: A Natural Guide to Managing Hormones, Health, and Happiness

“Aim for 25 to 30 grams of fiber daily from foods such as beans and lentils, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and nuts. In addition to keeping you full, fiber feeds the healthy bacteria in the gut that helps you to regulate your blood glucose levels that are associated with hunger.” -Ward

“The body is better at processing food earlier in the day. Eating at night can make it harder to control your weight because insulin, the hormone that moves glucose produced by digestion into your cells, doesn’t function as well. Skimping on food during the day may cause you to overeat at night, too, making weight control even harder because of over-consuming calories. Limiting food intake at night provides an extra edge when trying to lose weight.” -Ward

“There are several reasons why keeping a food journal is an effective weight loss tip for 2022. It allows you to stay aware of how much you’re eating and how it makes you feel physically and emotionally. It also keeps you accountable, since many of us tend to forget what we eat during the day or we overestimate how much we’ve eaten. Junk food is easy to overeat because it tastes so good, so keep track of your meals to make sure they’re healthy ones.” –Ronald Smith, RD

Japanese mint weight-loss patches have become a popular option for people who are eager to find a relatively easy way to shed a few pounds. However, while it’s understandable why simply slapping a patch on your body would be an attractive option, they may not be effective, according to experts.

Parade recently took a look at the patches that claim to use Japanese mint as an active ingredient, noting that the plant that’s also known as mentha canadensis comes from both North America and Asia. According to WebMD, it’s actually the oil in the mint that’s extracted and used for various conditions, including gas, indigestion, and gallstones, as well as for common colds, fever, and joint pain.

When it comes to using Japanese mint in weight-loss patches, Parade explains that they’re “intended to absorb transdermally” which “allows the active ingredients (in this case, the Japanese mint) to go directly into the skin without going through your digestive system.”

Shutterstock

But the question is: Is it effective as a weight-loss method?

“Mint has some amazing benefits. One of these is its ability to stimulate digestive enzymes and boost metabolism and a faster metabolism can help with weight loss,” Clara Lawson, RDN, who works with USA Hemp, tells Eat This, Not That!

However, when it comes to the patches, Lawson explained, “If you aren’t bringing any healthy change into your diet and lifestyle, you aren’t going to lose weight with these patches.”

Lawson also notes that there is “no evidence in regards to their effectiveness… and they aren’t even regulated by the FDA, so they are not a legitimate weight-loss method.”

That’s certainly not the only potential problem with these patches. “Ultimately, my issue isn’t with the mint; it’s with the carrier they use (herbs are bound with a chemical that drives into the skin),” Haylie Pomroy, a top Hollywood nutritionist and founder of the Haylie Pomroy Group, who was one of the experts that spoke to Parade, warned in a statement provided to Eat This, Not That!

“It can be scary because some companies use the same carriers as fentanyl patches. Look at who is making it and where it’s manufactured. Ninety-nine percent of these companies aren’t disclosing their carrier.”

Pomroy adds: “The only benefit we’ve seen through research with transdermal applications like these are for B vitamin transdermal or sex hormones, like testosterone or estrogen patches. Again, the issue is the carrier with all of these other patches.”

As we stare toward the end of 2021, you might feel ready for a fresh start. If this year’s seen you juggle work, family, and other stress, the nearness of a new year can be the perfect inspiration to prioritize your wellness again. One of the leading consumer analysis resources, U.S. News & World Report, asked a panel of health professionals to rate which weight loss diets result in the most meaningful outcomes that are also best for your health. We’ve summarized their list of the best weight-loss diets of 2021, as determined by how safe, effective, and practical they are for you.

U.S. News and World Report said they asked 24 physicians, dietitians, public health specialists, and other nutrition authorities to rate 39 diets on specific criteria. The publication reports these included “short- and long-term weight loss, ease of compliance, safety and nutrition,” among others. Find out their top picks, and don’t miss The #1 Best Yogurt for a Healthy Gut, Say Dietitians.

The experts in this ranking liked the Mayo Clinic Diet for its approach “that makes healthy eating a lifelong habit” with a “pyramid” that reportedly promotes consuming fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats, along with at least 30 minutes of activity per day.

(We should note that Jenny Craig received a similar score to the Mayo Clinic Diet for its weight-loss efficacy. However, some experts found the Jenny Craig was relatively pricey, while the pre-packaged meals restrict followers from typical lifestyle practices, like cooking at home for their loves ones or dining out.)

Not familiar with the flexitarian diet? This can be a great long-term lifestyle approach. U.S. News & World Report describes the flexitarian diet this way: “[…Y]ou can be a vegetarian most of the time, but still enjoy a burger or steak when the urge hits.” Feeling great is all about getting your nutrients and finding balance.

Many people want to learn how to be confident in different situations, but it’s not always easy. Maybe we’re too addicted to comparing ourselves or maybe social media has brainwashed us to believe that we should all be rich, famous, and in incredible shape.

Anyway, today I’d like to share a simple yet super effective tip that skyrocketed my confidence back in time. I’m surprised why so few confidence guides talk about this, so I’ll share it here with all the awesome people like you.

The best thing is, this technique is proven, fairly easy to implement, and can bring you huge results if used properly. Alright, let’s start.

Understanding human psychology

To learn this technique, you must first understand some basics of confidence and human psychology. Confidence is basically your ability to trust yourself and your capabilities in different situations. You’ll achieve ultimate confidence when you know that you can handle a certain situation, regardless of what happens.

When you do something you’re very capable of, you’ll probably feel confident because you know that the outcome will be positive. But what if I told you that even negative outcomes could be turned into your favor?

See, whether the result of something you do is positive or negative, it’s all up to you. It’s not about whether you succeed or not. It’s about how you see and carry yourself with your capabilities. By changing your mindset and actions, you can also change how the world around you reacts to you.

The key to this technique lies in human psychology. With the right mindset and actions, you can deal with any outcome in any situation and thus be confident.

“Action is a great restorer and builder of confidence. Inaction is not only the result, but the cause, of fear.” – Norman Vincent Peale

How to use this technique and be confident

Let’s say you’re giving a presentation but you haven’t prepared well. This gives you insecurity because you could end up embarrassing yourself. The presentation starts well, but eventually, you forget your lines, freeze, and everybody starts laughing.

So what do you do? If you start apologizing and hating yourself in front of everybody, you’ll probably end up with even more insecurity. Instead, you can carry out yourself with dignity and respect by saying something like: “Good to see you’re having fun, these presentations are usually so boring. I should probably start forgetting more stuff to keep you hooked!”

When you do this, you signal that failing is OK, and it isn’t embarrassing at all. It was actually a good thing because everyone was having fun. This is what carrying out yourself with dignity means. Think about how confident you’d feel before the presentation if you knew that you can deal with failures that easily.

If you’ve mastered your mindset properly, you also believe that it is OK to fail and you could easily turn that negative outcome into your favor. On top of that, the other people would definitely sense your confidence and start to respect you more.

When you start receiving the external validation, you’ll end up being even more confident. This leads to a positive spiral of confidence that will amplify itself.

Getting comfortable with being uncomfortable

Giving a presentation is only one example. You can carry out yourself like that in almost any negative situation! Executing this technique effectively consists of three things:

Realize that failing at something or having flaws is ok and it doesn’t determine your worth.

Figure out a way to carry out yourself in a way that signals confidence and turns the situation in your favor.

Remember that other people will see you as you see yourself, and let the positive results amplify your confidence.

Carrying out yourself with respect is a powerful way to deal with negative consequences. This helps you to be confident because you know that you’ll end up being fine regardless of the outcome.

Many people try to be confident by impressing others and bragging about things that they have succeeded at. And when they face failure and negative consequences, their insecurity will take control.

You’ll have to focus on yourself first. Change your own actions and mindset to serve you. You’ll need to become comfortable with your flaws, knowing that everyone has them. Accept the change that you will fail at something at some point, but it’s totally OK.

When you start with yourself and master your mindset, you’ll find out that your words and actions start to reflect it when you end up in a difficult situation. And when you know that other people will see you just as you see yourself, your confidence will skyrocket.

Again, to be confident, you must feel like you can deal with any outcome in a situation. And this technique gives you the tools to deal with negative ones. It’s as simple as understanding human psychology, becoming comfortable with a negative outcome, and carrying out yourself with self-respect and confidence.

Becoming more confident day by day

Learning this technique requires some practice, but since you’ve learned human psychology, you’re already on your way to success. So, start putting yourself out there and practicing. If it feels too intimidating, start with your mindset, and going out there becomes easier.

Think about the different situations you can use this. Somebody insults you for being too short but you turn it into a joke by saying that it’s good because you’ll fit better in your future Lamborghini. Or your flaw that comes up in a conversation but you admit it like it’s not a big deal.

In conclusion, remember that the world around you reacts to you as you react to yourself. Knowing this helps you to be confident because you can turn even the negative outcomes in your favor. When you master this technique, it’s like an invisible force field that turns the world into your oyster.
