<p>Some days you wake up motivated and ready to go.</p>
<p>On some days things feel heavy and it is hard to get going and find that inner drive.</p>
<p>And there are often roadblocks, plateaus and valleys along the way towards what you want where you can fall into a slump. Or get lost in a rut.</p>
<p>And you feel like your motivation has flown away.</p>
<p>So today I’d like to simply share three of my favorites and in my experience most effective ways to find that motivation again.</p>
<p><strong>1. Do the 10 minute recharge exercise.</strong></p>
<p>Here&#8217;s how you do this motivation exercise.</p>
<p>Sit down in a quiet place. Close your eyes.</p>
<p>Ask yourself these two questions:</p>
<ul>
<li>How will my life look in 5 years if I just continue to stay on the same path as now?</li>
<li>How will life likely become worse for me and maybe even for the people around me?</li>
</ul>
<p>It may be uncomfortable but try to see the negative consequences as vividly as you can in your mind to kickstart your motivation to get going for that positive change.</p>
<p>Then ask yourself:</p>
<ul>
<li>How will my life look in 1 year if I stick with it and I keep going with this change? How will it look in 5 years?</li>
<li>How will life improve not only for me but for the people that I love if I stick with it?</li>
</ul>
<p>With these two sets of questions try to not just to see the future as detailed and as vividly as you can but also find your own very personal reason(s) for making the change.</p>
<p>For example, getting into better shape could help you to become more optimistic and more energetic. That’s great.</p>
<p>But to really find the heart of your motivation keep looking for a few more minutes for the more personal answer.</p>
<p>The answer could be that you want to make this change in your health because if you don&#8217;t then you might not have the energy to have fun and play as much as you want with your son while he is young. And as he grows up you may be too tired from work to give him quality time each day.</p>
<p>If you want to make a change in your money habits then it could be because you always dreamed of seeing the pyramids of Egypt or visiting the Maldives with the person you love most in the world.</p>
<p>Write down those deepest reasons on a piece of paper and put that note where you cannot avoid seeing it every day.</p>
<p><strong>2. Let the motivation sparkling in other people flow over to you.</strong></p>
<p>Another great way to recharge your motivation is simply to tap into the motivational energy and perspectives of other people.</p>
<p>So talk to the people in your life about their dreams and what they feel most motivated to achieve and to do in their lives.</p>
<p>But don’t feel confined to just the people you know in real life.</p>
<p>I often recharge my motivation by listening to a small part of an audio book by Brian Tracy or Wayne Dyer. Or I may watch a Youtube video by Ali Abdaal or Matt D&#8217;Avella. Or read a chapter in a book on my Kindle.</p>
<p>Spending just 5 or 10 minutes with doing that can, in my experience, very often turn your mood and mindset around and ignite your motivation again.</p>
<p><strong>3. Just get started and let the motivation catch up with you.</strong></p>
<p>Sometimes the two tips above might not work that well even though they are very powerful.</p>
<p>What can you do then?</p>
<p>Well, you can take a break and recharge your batteries because that is sometimes simply what is needed.</p>
<p>Or you can do what I quite often do when I am having an uninspired morning.</p>
<p>I get started anyway, despite the lack of motivation within.</p>
<p>I do so by taking a small step forward and by just focusing on taking that one step. I may for example tell myself that I will work on a new article or on editing a part of a new course for 3 minutes.</p>
<p>When that is done then I take another small step and I focus only on that until it is done.</p>
<p>At first doing that task may not feel fun or interesting but it is just a small step that I need to take so it feels acceptable.</p>
<p>Things don’t stay that way though.</p>
<p>The next step tends to be a bit easier and maybe even a bit enjoyable.</p>
<p>And by the step after that one the motivation is catching up with me and I am starting to have fun and to truly enjoy what I am doing.</p>
<p>You will most likely not feel motivated every day. That is OK.</p>
<p>You can get going step by small step anyway and soon the motivation will start to catch up with you.</p>

<p>This is my most often used and favorite tip that helps me to keep my head up and to keep moving forward when I face a negative situation in my life.</p>
<p>I talk to my wife, a friend or my parents about the situation. To vent, to figure things out for myself out loud and/or to get some level-headed and experience-based advice when I need it the most.</p>
<p>This helps me to lighten my mental load and it renews my energy and motivation.</p>
<p><strong>2. Learn from criticism but remember that all criticism you get is not about you.</strong></p>
<p>When you get criticized, don&#8217;t just dismiss it. Instead, first ask yourself questions like:</p>
<ul>
<li>Can I learn something from this piece of criticism?</li>
<li>Is there perhaps actually something here that I may not want to hear but that could help me to improve?</li>
</ul>
<p>Remain clear-headed, open and take a couple of minutes to figure out if there is something here that can help you.</p>
<p>But also keep in mind that all criticism you get will not be helpful. And some of what people may tell you are simply attacks.</p>
<p>What can you do then?</p>
<p>Well, what works for me is to kindly remind myself that criticism isn’t always about me.</p>
<p>Because in real life people will have a bad day or month. Some will – at least at this point in time – hate some part of their life or not be well.</p>
<p>And so they lash out and release pent up negative emotions and thoughts.</p>
<p>And sometimes you or I are there at the wrong moment. It’s no fun. But it happens to most of us from time to time.</p>
<p>To lessen the sting of such harsh or misdirected words I try to be understanding.</p>
<p>I think to myself that based on the message I got – often really angry or overly critical about some pretty minor or unimportant thing – this person is not feeling too good right now.</p>
<p>Being understanding makes it easier for me to let such messages go and move forward in my own life instead of feeling bad or getting dragged into being angry myself.</p>
<p><strong>3. Reminder: It’s darkest before the dawn.</strong></p>
<p>This thought has helped me to hold on many times when things have felt very difficult. When I’ve felt like giving up.</p>
<p>Because I have over and over again found it to be true.</p>
<p>When things seemed to be at the lowest point with my dating life, with my business or my life in general something always happened.</p>
<p>Why?</p>
<p>Well, likely pretty often just because hitting rock bottom and being at that low point forced me to change something in how I did things in that area of my life.</p>
<p>But I also think it’s because life seems to have some kind of balance if I keep going.</p>
<p>If I keep taking action. Instead of giving in and going home.</p>
<p>If I keep on moving something good always happens.</p>
<p>Seeing this repeat itself strengthened my belief in taking action – even if it is sometimes by just taking one or two small steps forward – even on rough days and through tough weeks.</p>
<p>And this thought brings me some comfort even when things look pretty dark.</p>

<h2><strong>My 5 Favorite Steps for Making a New Beginning</strong></h2>
<p><strong>Step 1: First accept what is to more easily let go.</strong></p>
<p>The first part of making a new beginning for yourself will often be to let go of what has been to be able to make room for the new thing.</p>
<p>And one key thing that has helped me to let go is to accept what is and has happened.</p>
<p>Why?</p>
<p>Well, if you still struggle in your mind against what has already happened then you feed that memory or situation with more energy.</p>
<p>You might, for example, make what someone said or did even bigger and even more powerful in your head than it may have actually been in reality.</p>
<p>By accepting that what happened – for instance that you were rejected after a date or let go from your job – and letting that in instead of trying to push it away I’ve found that often something odd happens after a while.</p>
<p>The memory or the issue becomes less powerful in my mind. I don’t feel as upset or sad about it as I did before. I become less attached emotionally to it.</p>
<p>And so it most often becomes easier for me to let go and for me to move on with my life.</p>
<p><strong>Step 2: Forgive (for your own sake and to help yourself).</strong></p>
<p>If someone wrongs you then that will likely cause you pain – sometimes a bit, sometimes a lot – for a while.</p>
<p>But after some time has passed you have a choice.</p>
<p>You can refuse to let go of what happened. And instead let it interfere with your life, your relationships and replay what happened over and over in your mind.</p>
<p>I have done that many times. And often for far too long.</p>
<p>Or you can choose to forgive.</p>
<p>Now, first accepting what has happened as mentioned in the previous step can make it easier to forgive.</p>
<p>Another thing that has helped me is to not focus on forgiving because “that’s something I’m supposed to do”.</p>
<p>I have found that I get more motivated to forgive for my own sake. For my own health and well-being and to live a happier life.</p>
<p>I like this quote and reminder from Catherine Ponder to help me to make a decision to forgive:</p>
<p>“When you hold resentment toward another, you are bound to that person or condition by an emotional link that is stronger than steel. Forgiveness is the only way to dissolve that link and get free.”</p>
<p>Now, just because I forgive doesn’t mean that I have to stay passive as I move forward.</p>
<p>I may for example choose to forgive but to spend less time or no time with someone who has hurt me.</p>
<p><strong>Step 3: Keep your focus on what you CAN influence in your life.</strong></p>
<p>So the first two tips in this post have hopefully helped you to start letting go of the past and what happened to be able to make room for your new beginning.</p>
<p>At this point it is important to keep you focus steadily on what you can control and influence in your life to not lapse back into replaying old memories or getting lost in daydreaming and procrastination.</p>
<p>So ask yourself:</p>
<ul>
<li>What CAN I focus my time and energy on to actually make positive progress and a new beginning in my life?</li>
<li>And what is one small step I can take today to get started with that?</li>
</ul>
<p>If you like, write those two questions down somewhere where you cannot avoid seeing them every day. This will help you to keep yourself on track as you move into the new situation and start in your life.</p>
<p><strong>Step 4: Don’t make the new beginning something huge and vague in your head.</strong></p>
<p>Sometimes we make doing something or getting a fresh start into something big and vague in our minds.</p>
<p>And so it becomes easy to get scared of creating the new beginning you want and you instead start procrastinating.</p>
<p>Two things that have helped me with that – besides asking the two questions in step #3 – are to:</p>
<p><strong>Get knowledge from people who have already gone where you want to go.</strong></p>
<p>This will defuse vague fears about what could happen if you started making the change you want.</p>
<p>Because learning from others about what obstacles they faced and how their own journey unfolded will give you a more realistic road map for your own journey than the thoughts may be bouncing around in your head and that are creating mountains out of molehills.</p>
<p>So talk to people who have gone where you want to go or find their advice in books, on websites, in podcasts or on Youtube.</p>
<p><strong>Ask yourself: Honestly, what is realistically the worst that could happen?</strong></p>
<p>First, take a couple of deep breaths to calm your mind down a bit.</p>
<p>Then ask yourself this question.</p>
<p>And you’ll likely realize that the worst thing that could realistically happen is not that bad.</p>
<p>Yes, it may sting or be tough for a bit. But it is something you can handle. And it is a situation you can find something to do about if that worst scenario were to actually happen.</p>
<p>The clarity you get from asking yourself this question has been so helpful in my own life and allowed me to calm down, find a path forward in my mind and take action to make my dream or goal into reality.</p>
<p><strong>Step 5: Find encouragement and help from other people.</strong></p>
<p>As you get started with your journey, check if someone you know wants to tag along. Perhaps you have a friend that also wants to start working out at the gym.</p>
<p>And if you can’t find someone that can participate so directly in your new beginning then be sure to keep feeding your mind with positive encouragement as you move forward.</p>
<p>You can find such encouragement and support from friends and family. Or from sources a bit further away in the world such as books, Youtube-videos, movies, podcasts or websites.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I went to a modern art museum once with a friend who was also an artist. We were looking at, what was for me, a particularly challenging piece of art that was just a giant white canvas with a square of black paint in the middle of it. I asked my friend, “Why would someone do this? What’s the point?” And her simple answer was, “Well, in some cases, just because they can.” In a strange way, that was a satisfying answer to my question.</span><span id="more-53663"/></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">What’s the point? I love asking that question. The benefits of “What’s the point?” are numerous. It’s a simple and effective way to get to the heart of every issue. It cuts out the noise and essentializes. However, I think if you ask that question of others, sometimes it can come off as somewhat rude. If you are given a task by a supervisor and you ask them “What’s the point?” you might not have that job for very long. If your partner asks you about your relationship’s future over a romantic dinner and you respond with “What’s the point?” you might get a glass of chardonnay in the face. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">No, you need to be judicious when you ask, “What’s the point?” In fact, I would suggest that the best person to ask “What’s the point?” to – repeatedly and intentionally – is you. I’m not suggesting that this question should be asked from a place of futility: you’re not throwing your hands up and saying, “Oh what’s the point?!” Instead, this question is a launching pad for self-assessment. For being honest with yourself about how you spend your time and what value you get out of what you do on a daily basis. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Why ask this particular question? Because life is short! We have a limited time here on Earth to do what we want to do, so constantly assessing the point of it all, being honest, and </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">then doing something about it</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">, is critical to success and overall happiness. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There are four places in life where I ask myself “What’s the point?” all the time. While these aren’t the only areas where you can ask this question, they are a great start. I encourage you to ask yourself:</span></p>
<h2><b>1. What is the point… of my work?</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When I started my company, I began with the simple goal of helping people to amplify their voices on social media. Giving our customers a platform to share their stories, services, and ideas is our central goal. However, I constantly need to reassess that goal and ask if we – especially me – are staying focused on that mission. In Good To Great, Jim Collins encourages business leaders to reflect on their company’s core competency and focus relentlessly on that one thing. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To become great in that one objective </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">is</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> the point. Since most of us spend at least 40 hours a week at work, we should always ask ourselves, what’s the point? If it’s “to make money” or “to put food on the table,” those are valid reasons, but is that enough for you to feel fulfilled? Is work giving you what you need? Does it have a purpose beyond mere survival?</span></p>

<h2><b>2. What is the point… of my hobbies?</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While I used to dance professionally, hip-hop dance continues to be a passionate hobby of mine. What’s the point of a hobby? For me, it’s a chance to get away from it all. Dance provides me an opportunity to disconnect from the day-to-day stresses of life. It allows me to express myself and use my body in a way that sitting at a computer all day cannot. Psychologists agree that hobbies are important for a balanced, well-lived life. What is the point of your hobbies? </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Do you </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">have</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> a hobby? Let’s start there. If you don’t have a hobby and the reason is “because I don’t have time.” then you should return to the question above. Even if you do have a hobby, you should continue to self-assess. Does your hobby still provide you with joy? Relaxation? Or has your hobby become a habit you’re afraid to break? Only you know the answer, but you have to start by asking the question.</span></p>
<h2><b>3. What is the point… of my relationships?</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This is probably the toughest question to ask, because it obviously can affect some important connections you have in life. However, it’s always important to ask. Friendships can become stale and past their expiration date. Romantic relationships can become toxic. Is it time to Marie Kondo some of your relationships and ask if they still spark joy? Friendships/relationships that bring you joy are the ones you keep, but if you are looking at interactions with a particular person and asking repeatedly, “What’s the point?” Then perhaps it’s time to let that person leave your life. Again, I know this is challenging, but remember that the </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">ultimate goal</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is to be honest with yourself about what’s important to you. </span></p>
<h2><b>4. What is the point… of life?</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I’m a big lover of life – I can’t help it. Success to me is simply being able to do what I love every single moment of the day and helping others that I love and care about. People are more important than things. I look in the mirror at the end of every day and ask myself if I followed through on actions that allowed me to continue doing what I love. What was the point of today? That little self-assessment at the end of the day gives me the energy to get up the next morning and do it all over again. String a bunch of those little self-assessments, those “What’s the point?” mirror talks together, and you start to put together for yourself a life well lived. </span></p>
