Most people are searching to become the happiest and most confident version of themselves. But it can be difficult to achieve this in the age of social media where it feels like you’re being judged everywhere you look. But there are steps that you can take to improve your mental wellbeing. Below, we explore some tips to help you feel happy and confident.

Positive Outlook

A positive outlook can sound basic but having one can make a real difference to your happiness. Creating a positive outlook can be tough though. It involves giving yourself positive affirmation – you should try and love and accept yourself. But you can help this process along by taking time to look after yourself once in a while. What’s more, you should try not to let negative comments get to you: everyone will be criticised once in a while, but by challenging negative thoughts and avoiding dwelling on negativity, you can develop a more positive outlook.

Buying That New Outfit

Usually, if you look good, you’ll feel good. And you can reach this state by buying that new outfit that you’ve been eyeing for a while. By treating yourself once in a while to a present or two, you’ll be able to enjoy a boost from loving yourself.

Physical Changes

If you feel like physical changes to your appearance might make you happier, it’s worth exploring how feasible they are. This could be something simple like dying your hair a completely new colour, getting a tattoo or trying a new piercing. However, if there are more physical changes that you’re looking for, you could explore cosmetic surgeries such as gastric bypass, nose surgery or otoplasty. You should take your time before opting for cosmetic surgery, but this type of procedure can help boost your happiness and confidence in the right scenario.

Nutrition And Healthcare

Nutrition and healthcare are essential for happiness. For a start, healthy eating can boost your mental wellbeing – especially if you’ve cooked nutritious dishes yourself. Meanwhile, regular exercise can help boost your self-esteem and make you feel happy about yourself physically.

Boosting your happiness and confidence can be difficult. But by being patient with yourself and trying any of the tips above, you can put yourself in a good position to improve your mental wellbeing.

You’ve committed to a healthier lifestyle and are exercising several times a week. You’ve replaced the junk food snacks, processed foods, and refined sugars with weekly meal prep and healthier, portion-controlled snacks.

So how come your whole body hurts and your stomach is off?

Any time you change up your diet, you might feel a little different for a while.

Here’s what happens to your body when you eat healthier (and why you shouldn’t give up on your new habits).

Why Your Diet Might Be Making You Feel Sick

Feeling a bit ill after taking up a healthier lifestyle is extremely common. But, if you have any doubts, please contact your doctor to be on the safe side.

If you’ve recently made a robust or abrupt switch, you might not feel your best straight away. Here’s why.

1. You’re not staying hydrated.

Some diets, especially low-carb diets, can cause your body to shed excess water.

Even if you maintain your usual amount of water consumption, you might find yourself mildly dehydrated, which can cause dizziness, rapid heartbeat, and faster breathing.

A good indicator of your level of hydration is the color of your pee. The lighter yellow, the better. Dark yellow pee is a clear sign that you need to drink water, stat.

2. Your diet is too extreme.

Transitioning from a standard American diet to a calorie-restricted one or a strict elimination diet (think: keto or vegan) on a dime can also be a shock to the body.

“When you take out all the grains, you also lose fiber,” says Tucker. “Complications like constipation can become a real issue. No matter what diet you’re on, you need lots of fiber to keep your digestion moving.”

If you’re cutting out meat or other animal products, make sure you’re replacing them with healthy whole foods, like lean proteins and healthy fats.

3. Your diet is missing essential nutrients.

Eliminating whole categories of foods like nightshades or legumes (unless there’s a medical reason to do so) may also eliminate essential nutrients from your diet.

“When you completely eliminate any food category, you also eliminate the nutrition that food would provide,” Tucker says. “If you eliminate a category of foods, take care to source key nutrients from other places.

At the same time, if you are eating a ton of bacon and avocado but never touching a veggie, your body may be telling you that your nutrition is lacking.”

4. Your diet is too low in calories.

Your brain and body needs a steady supply of calories to function normally. If you’re not filling your plate with enough to get your body through the day, you won’t feel your best.

On most diets, “carbs fuel your brain,” says Tucker. “On low-carb diets, like the ketogenic diet, fats fuel your brain.”

Either way, she adds, you need to eat enough food.

“Too much calorie restriction causes your body to run out of short-term fuel in the form of either fats or carbs,” Tucker explains. “That alone can make you feel sick.”

What Happens to Your Body When You Eat Healthier?

When you shift to a healthier lifestyle and commit to cleaner eating and regular exercise, your body can experience a whole lot more than weight loss.

Your diet can impact your brain chemistry, your gut microbiome, and even your hormone production.

Here’s a look at what happens when your clean up your eating and how that affects different areas of your body.

Digestion

Some of the most common digestive symptoms you may experience are:

digestive slowdowns (or occasional constipation, due to a low-fiber diet or not drinking enough fluids)

more trips to the bathroom (due to increased fiber intake)

stomach cramps (thanks again, fiber!)

nausea

Your gut microbiome can change within days of altering how you eat, so you may be feeling the effects of that shift, “especially if the old you was snacking on lots of processed food,” says Barbie Tucker, R.D., L.D., M.Ed, a registered dietitian who practices in the Atlanta area.

And, if you’ve shifted to, say, a ketogenic or other low-carb diet, your body might slow way down due to a lack of complex carbs and, thus, fiber.

“We are supposed to be getting 25 to 30 grams of fiber daily,” says Tucker.

“If you find that you are unable to use the restroom, that might be an indicator that you lack adequate fiber in your new diet.”

And on the flip side, your body may be used to digesting a whole lot of sugar and simple carbs, and now it’s being asked to work harder to break down more nutrient-dense fare that’s higher in fiber.

“Most often lack of fiber or inadequate hydration are to blame when digestive issues arise,” says Tucker. “Take stock of how regularly you drink water and consider whether or not you include enough fiber in every meal.”

Brain health

On a mission to cut out added sugars? You may experience:

headaches

nausea

dizziness

A study conducted with mice showed that when cutting back on added sugar, it takes time for the brain to acclimate to not getting the regular hits of dopamine sugar provides.

One human study suggests that there are adverse effects of prolonged sugar intake (from sweet food or beverages) on long-term psychological health. It also suggested that lower intake of sugar may be associated with better psychological health.

Sugar detox symptoms are common and usually subside in just over a week.

“If your brain is accustomed to a consistent supply of sugar — via flavored beverages and sugary treats, not to mention the hidden sugars in products like bread and processed foods — a sudden halt to the sugar supply can make you feel less than your best,” says Tucker.

Mood and energy levels

With food and mood, it’s important to know that most serotonin receptors are located in the gut.

The gut and the brain communicate via the vagus nerve, and this communication highway demonstrates the importance of food quality to your everyday mood.

A 2019 study suggests that eating a healthy Mediterranean-style diet may help protect against mood disorders.

“Your brain consumes a lot of energy,” explains Tucker. “It lives on carbs. Our bodies need them.”

If you feel terrible at first when you cut carbs and boost other macros, that’s normal, she says.

It’s “how we respond when our diet has drastically changed. When we change our diets, our bodies need time to process that change.”

The first few days of healthy eating can throw your body for a loop.

Some low-carb diets can cause fatigue and muscle soreness for up to two weeks. These changes can likely be attributed to the shift in your fuel source.

How to Feel Better

Before you make any big change to your diet, be sure to talk to a qualified healthcare provider, such as a registered dietitian or your doctor.

Those symptoms you’re feeling are your body’s way of getting your attention.

Tucker suggests really tuning in and listening. Consider whether your changes are sustainable and helpful or too strict.

Whenever a lifestyle or diet “becomes so strenuous that you are miserable following it, you’ll go right back to how you ate before,” she says.

People often refer to “getting lost” in a good book as an escape from reality, where one can participate in the world as somebody else. Essentially, reading can transport us to other places and into characters’ minds who are unlike ourselves.

Over the years, studies have demonstrated that reading promotes empathy. Even from a young age, teachers have used books to enhance the emotional responses in children to certain situations. This cognitive development helps kids relate to different perspectives and experiences.

When we read, we can understand what it’s like living as a different gender or race, immigrating to another country, overcoming addictions, or even enduring a natural disaster. In turn, this can help us connect more with the world around us.

Reading For Greater Connection

According to Pew Research Center, about 75% of U.S. adults have read a book in various formats in the last year.

At the beginning of the pandemic, when people were confined to their homes, they spent more time reading for leisure. It’s suggested this could be due to the lack of connection people had with family and friends and the sudden inability to venture outside of their homes.

Whether it’s the books we travel with, read for school or the ones we turn to in the wake of despair and fear, reading is not just an independent activity to occupy our time. It has the potential to be fundamentally social and transformative.

Both fiction and nonfiction stories have the power to change us into better, kinder and more open-minded versions of ourselves. When we engage in stories, we can better connect through the same mental landscapes and the characters we meet along the way. This may also translate to a newfound ability to respond differently to situations or people in real life.

Of course, books foster relationships that reach beyond human-to-human. They allow us to build deep-rooted connections with the physical world, as well.

Fiction In The Environmental Age

We live in an era where climate change and human influences on the planet have been thrust into the spotlight. While environmental movements have popped up across the globe to address these crises, there have also been numerous environmental-themed books published.

Fictional stories have painted dystopian or utopian imaginations of the future, depending on how books show humanity responding to specific climate change impacts. Many climate fiction novels pull concepts from ecocriticism, psychology and environmental communication to reach readers and encourage them to imagine how life on earth could potentially look.

Research has indicated that climate fiction readers are usually younger, may associate themselves with liberal politics and are typically already concerned about climate change. While similar studies are inconclusive on the influence of environmental fiction on climate deniers, books may offer a starting point for conversations that aren’t politically charged.

In addition to climate fiction, there’s been an influx of children’s eco-focused books published, as well, in what’s referred to as the Greta Thunberg Effect. Although some themes may be anxiety-inducing for kids under 10-years-old, environmental fiction is said to have several benefits on young readers, including making kids more curious about the earth, fostering critical thinking skills, and empowering them to save the planet.

Books That Paint A Bright Future

If books can help connect us to the world, humanity and the problems we’re facing, then perhaps it’s time more stories paint an idyllic future we can aspire to.

It’s been proven that storytelling can effectively alter people’s beliefs and attitudes as readers can better identify with the characters and immerse themselves in what’s happening to them. For example, a clearer literary vision of survival and hope may be the catalyst for change when it comes to environmental issues.

Author Bio

Jane is an environmental writer and the founder and editor-in-chief of Environment.co where she covers sustainability and eco-friendly living.

<picture class="alignnone size-full wp-image-14458 sp-no-webp"></picture>

“People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily.”
Zig Ziglar

Some days you wake up motivated and ready to go.

On some days things feel heavy and it is hard to get going and find that inner drive.

And there are often roadblocks, plateaus and valleys along the way towards what you want where you can fall into a slump. Or get lost in a rut.

And you feel like your motivation has flown away.

So today I’d like to simply share three of my favorites and in my experience most effective ways to find that motivation again.

1. Do the 10 minute recharge exercise.

Here’s how you do this motivation exercise.

Sit down in a quiet place. Close your eyes.

Ask yourself these two questions:

How will my life look in 5 years if I just continue to stay on the same path as now?

How will life likely become worse for me and maybe even for the people around me?

It may be uncomfortable but try to see the negative consequences as vividly as you can in your mind to kickstart your motivation to get going for that positive change.

Then ask yourself:

How will my life look in 1 year if I stick with it and I keep going with this change? How will it look in 5 years?

How will life improve not only for me but for the people that I love if I stick with it?

With these two sets of questions try to not just to see the future as detailed and as vividly as you can but also find your own very personal reason(s) for making the change.

For example, getting into better shape could help you to become more optimistic and more energetic. That’s great.

But to really find the heart of your motivation keep looking for a few more minutes for the more personal answer.

The answer could be that you want to make this change in your health because if you don’t then you might not have the energy to have fun and play as much as you want with your son while he is young. And as he grows up you may be too tired from work to give him quality time each day.

If you want to make a change in your money habits then it could be because you always dreamed of seeing the pyramids of Egypt or visiting the Maldives with the person you love most in the world.

Write down those deepest reasons on a piece of paper and put that note where you cannot avoid seeing it every day.

2. Let the motivation sparkling in other people flow over to you.

Another great way to recharge your motivation is simply to tap into the motivational energy and perspectives of other people.

So talk to the people in your life about their dreams and what they feel most motivated to achieve and to do in their lives.

But don’t feel confined to just the people you know in real life.

I often recharge my motivation by listening to a small part of an audio book by Brian Tracy or Wayne Dyer. Or I may watch a Youtube video by Ali Abdaal or Matt D’Avella. Or read a chapter in a book on my Kindle.

Spending just 5 or 10 minutes with doing that can, in my experience, very often turn your mood and mindset around and ignite your motivation again.

3. Just get started and let the motivation catch up with you.

Sometimes the two tips above might not work that well even though they are very powerful.

What can you do then?

Well, you can take a break and recharge your batteries because that is sometimes simply what is needed.

Or you can do what I quite often do when I am having an uninspired morning.

I get started anyway, despite the lack of motivation within.

I do so by taking a small step forward and by just focusing on taking that one step. I may for example tell myself that I will work on a new article or on editing a part of a new course for 3 minutes.

When that is done then I take another small step and I focus only on that until it is done.

At first doing that task may not feel fun or interesting but it is just a small step that I need to take so it feels acceptable.

Things don’t stay that way though.

The next step tends to be a bit easier and maybe even a bit enjoyable.

And by the step after that one the motivation is catching up with me and I am starting to have fun and to truly enjoy what I am doing.

You will most likely not feel motivated every day. That is OK.

You can get going step by small step anyway and soon the motivation will start to catch up with you.

Life can feel fast-paced at times, and it’s easy to get swept along and forget to nurture your health. Neglecting yourself is not a wise choice though, because it can zap both your energy and your motivation. So instead, try these top self-care strategies to look and feel your best.

Get Your Sleep

The top item on your self-care list should be getting enough quality sleep. Inadequate sleep can damage your health in a myriad of ways, including:

Increasing your risk of cardiac disease

Elevating your inflammation levels

Reducing your immunity

Causing issues with weight control

Lowering your level of energy

Impairing your focus

Increasing your chances for depression and anxiety

To ensure you get the sleep you need to feel your best, try to schedule at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night. Make your bedroom as conducive to sleep as possible by ensuring the room is dark, cool, and relaxing. Also, try to avoid exposure to blue light later in the day, and limit your intake of caffeine and alcohol, as well. Finally, consider taking a magnesium complex supplement to help you relax and get the sleep you need to feel your best.

Stay Physically Active

When your job involves staring at a computer all day, your physical health and mental wellbeing can suffer. A sedentary lifestyle increases your odds for cardiac disease, chronic illness, arthritis, and weight gain. It can also take a toll on your mental health, increasing your odds for both depression and anxiety.

To feel your best, consciously choose to exercise on a regular basis. Experts recommend that you aim for at least 75 minutes of vigorous exercise or 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week. As long as you can reach your target rate, the type of exercise is not critical. Instead, it’s more important to choose something you love so that you can successfully maintain a regular workout routine.

You can also integrate movement in small ways throughout your day. For example, use a standing desk and make a point of walking whenever you are on the phone. Also, sneak in steps by parking further from your destination and opt for the stairs rather than riding an elevator.

Take A Breath And Relax

It is becoming increasingly clear that taking time to calm your mind can have a plethora of advantages for your health. One option is to spend a few minutes each day doing breathing exercises, such as belly breathing, alternate nostril breathing, or resonant breathing.

Alternatively, consider starting a meditation practice. Meditating helps you gain control of your breath and your mind. Not only can it help you feel more centered and peaceful, but it can also help you become more mindful and better able to control the direction of your thoughts.

Being deliberate about self-care can go a long way towards helping you feel your best. By making sure you get enough sleep, scheduling regular physical activity, and using relaxation techniques, you will find yourself better equipped to tackle anything that life throws your way.

When you feel like you can’t do anything right, the whole day feels like a bust. It can be hard to get back on your feet when persistent negative thoughts are getting in your way.

Think about the last time you felt this way. After some time, did your lack of energy subside? Remember that depressive feelings don’t last forever, as emotions act like a tide coming in and out.

Luckily, there is always something you can do to get back in action. We’ve created a list of 11 positive practices to turn things around.

What to Do When You Can’t Do Anything

If your self-esteem is running on empty, you may be asking yourself, “Why can’t I get anything right?” It’s important for you to understand that your lack of motivation isn’t your fault.

Our emotional worlds can be complex. We often go through stages of depression that feel inexplicable and difficult to overcome. Then, out of nowhere, we feel better again. The clouds clear, the sky turns from grey to blue, and we forget the rain ever came.

However, our responsibilities can’t always wait for a natural turnaround in our mood. If you are feeling unproductive or incapable, know that it isn’t a reflection of your character and that there are productive steps you can take to uplift your mood.

Just because you have thoughts like, “I can’t do anything right,” doesn’t mean they are true. You can learn to break past negative thought patterns. If your feelings of depression are prolonged, you may want to:

Consult a therapist.

Talk to your doctor about medication.

Open up to a friend or family member for support.

Why Can’t I Do Anything Right? 11 Ways to Turn It Around

1. Reorganize your space.

When you’ve felt depressed for some time, your room or home may not feel comfortable anymore. For visual thinkers and aesthetically minded people, the space around you can often reflect the state of your mind.

When those spaces are at odds, it can be hard to get anything done. Cleaning or reorganizing your room is a small task that can make a monumental difference in your mental health.

Not only will you feel proud of your hard work, but your environment will be working for you rather than against you.

2. Connect with nature.

Have you gotten out of bed today? When was the last time you went on a nice walk around your neighborhood and felt the sun on your skin?

You can fight feelings of mental paralysis by getting your body moving and connecting to something bigger than yourself. The beauty of nature is the perfect tonic for negative feelings.

Allow yourself to feel inspiration and gratitude for the beauty of nature. You don’t have to hike Mount Everest, but a five-minute walk around the block can make a world of difference.

3. Take a shower.

Our bodies do so much for us, even when we feel like we can’t do any at all. Every cell in your body is working just for you, even when it feels like your brain isn’t functioning at full capacity.

Small actions, like taking a shower or a bath, honor your body for the good things it does for you. It can also press reset after a tough day. After you get out of the shower, take a few moments to just breathe, and remember how capable you are.

4. Incorporate mantras into your routine.

Negative thoughts are usually a part of a pattern. Our brain gets used to negative self-talk, internalizes it, and then it begins to feel like reality. If you continue to believe you are a failure or you can’t do anything right, it might become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

It’s important to remember that those self-defeating thoughts exist only as unreliable products of your consciousness. Meditation and repeating mantras or affirmations can ground you in the present moment and rewire your brain to respond to negative emotions with more positive thoughts.

5. Ask yourself questions.

Do you feel like the only question you can ask yourself right now is, “Why can’t I get anything done?” Try turning that question around, and reframe it in a more positive light.

Instead of assuming you can’t get anything done, ask yourself, “What is one thing I can do right now that would make me feel better?” Your answer could be to go for a walk or have an ice cream cone — it’s entirely up to you!

Or maybe you’re thinking, “I feel like I can’t do anything right.” Change that thought to, “What are some things I have done well?” Remind yourself of those things, and write them down in a journal so you remember them.

6. Reframe your to-do list.

When you are feeling down on yourself or stuck, your to-do list is still there waiting for you. Tasks can build up over time and feel overwhelming no matter how small they are.

Rethink how you approach these tasks. If you aren’t good with routines, don’t make one. Just pick one thing off your list each day, and find an hour in the day to do it.

Break tasks down into small, manageable actions that still make you feel productive but don’t tax you too much.

Allow yourself to be flexible and go with the flow. Don’t be so hard on yourself about when you get things done or how much you accomplish. One useful action is better than none.

7. Ask a friend for help.

If you feel like you can’t get anything done, that’s okay. You don’t have to do it all by yourself. There’s no shame in asking a friend to lighten your load. That’s what friends are for.

Enlist a friend’s help and your task just got more fun! The time it takes to complete it will be cut in half, while you and your friend goof off and make each other laugh.

8. Go on a trip.

Nothing hits reset on a tough few weeks like getting out of town. When you feel like you can’t do anything right, then step back and lean in to a mental and emotional break.

Go on a weekend getaway and treat yourself to a fun new experience. Your productivity does not determine your worth, and you deserve to treat yourself no matter what.

9. Set small goals.

The bigger the task, the more daunting it feels, and the more paralyzed you may become. If you are already in a rut, don’t set your self-expectations too high.

Break down your larger goals into smaller, more manageable goals. Plus, this way you have more milestones to celebrate.

Each goal you complete is another one you can cross off your list — and crossing things off lists is one of the simple joys in life.

10. Reward yourself.

You did it! You got out of bed today, that’s awesome. Celebrate with a nice, fancy cup of tea. You finished up an assignment you’d been putting off. That’s incredible!

It can be so hard to overcome that anxiety, so be proud of yourself. You deserve a treat. Rewarding yourself for small tasks isn’t silly — it’s motivating. Your brain loves rewards, and doing something nice for your brain will help you to feel better.

11. Do nothing.

So you can’t get anything done. That’s okay. We are taught that a lack of motivation and low productivity is always bad. But often it’s a call for rest. Sometimes your body just needs a break.

If you feel like you are making a lot of mistakes and getting things wrong, it could be a sign that you’re not well-rested or that stress is impacting your concentration and focus.

There’s nothing wrong with listening to your body and giving it the rest it needs. Go take a nap or lounge in front of the TV. These are little joys that can help us reset.

When you can’t do anything right, try one of these actions.

We all feel stuck sometimes. Getting out of a self-reinforcing rut is never an easy task, and many people take for granted how scary that incapacitation can feel.

You are stronger and more capable than you know, even right now. Take stock of where you are and be more forgiving with yourself. Whether you go on a walk or call a friend, these little steps will make a huge difference.

Commit to trying a couple of them when you your life feels stuck and you aren’t your best. Just taking one of these actions proves that you can do something, even if it’s a small something. Build on that and let the momentum carry you forward until your emotions follow.

As far as you can tell, you suck at everything that matters.

And your life is proof of that.

But while it’s so much easier to spend years numbing yourself with alcohol or whatever, there’s a better way.

Instead of asking, “Why does life suck so much?” (which is a valid question), this post is all about exploring ways to make it suck less.

We’ve found 15 proven tips for doing precisely that.

Which one will you try first?

Why Does My Life Suck?

There’s a reason you spend so much time thinking, “I suck at life!” or “I suck at everything!”

You’ve gotten used to thought patterns that seem reasonable but are based on cognitive distortions like the following:

All-or-Nothing Thinking — You’re either extraordinary or a huge disappointment. There is no in-between.

Overgeneralization — Taking one thing and using it to paint your entire self. One huge mistake must mean you’re an irredeemable monster. Or an idiot. Or both.

Reductive Thinking / Filtering — You see only the negative. One snide comment from your partner is enough to block out all the good he’s said or done.

Disqualifying the Positive — You acknowledge the positive but reject it. You hear a compliment from your boss and write it off as something negative or meaningless.

Jumping to Conclusions — You interpret another person’s words or actions in a way that reinforces your bias toward negativity.

Mind Reading — You assume you know what someone else is really thinking and often assume their meaning is negative or hurtful.

Catastrophizing / Magnification — One small mistake becomes a huge deal and the reason why your life will never amount to anything.

Personalizing — Whatever bad thing happens, it must be because of something you did wrong. You make it personal even when there’s evidence to the contrary.

Emotional Reasoning — You’re so stuck in your own negative thinking, you interpret everyone’s words and actions in a negative way that (to you) seems logical but to others sounds unhinged.

Finally, as you’ll see from one of the tips below, one of the worst offenders is an overuse of the word “should” — he should have this, she should have known, they should do that, etc.

Read on to see how you can change direction and head somewhere good.

I Suck at Life: 15 Tips For Changing Sucky To Lucky

The tips described here can change your thinking and your life for the better. A year from now, you’ll wonder why you ever thought you sucked at anything.

1. Talk to a doctor.

A medical issue could be at the root of what you’re feeling.

When was the last time you talked to a doctor or nurse and got yourself checked out? How are your lungs, your heart, your kidneys, your liver, etc.? Get on that.

2. Take your vitamins.

Vitamin deficiencies are often behind low energy levels, making it harder not to see the sucky side of life.

Ask your doctor which specific supplements they recommend, based on your lab work. Check for deficiencies in vitamin D, vitamin B12, and iron.

3. Make a list of your “shoulds.”

Jot down every “should” statement you’ve been telling yourself — particularly those that send your mood into a downward spiral.

The word “should” isn’t always bad, of course (e.g., you should not try to breathe underwater).

But when you use it to shame yourself into trying to fit a mold that isn’t made for you, it benefits no one.

4. Make a list of your wants.

Get clear on what you actually want in your life and what you want to do. It doesn’t have to match the “shoulds” or agree with someone else’s ideas for your life. Imagine the life you want and describe it in vivid detail.

Then work backward from that to the present. And start with actions you can easily take.

5. Change up your routine.

A lackadaisical routine — or the complete lack of one — can leave you feeling “Meh” about yourself and about life in general.

When was the last time you stuck to a morning routine that gave you some small but real accomplishments to take pride in before breakfast?

Often, it’s small changes that get us moving in a better direction.

6. Meet some new people.

If your current social circle encourages negativity, find some new people who build you up and encourage you to take meaningful action.

If you’re the average of the people you hang out with, create a social environment that raises the average and inspires you to become the person you want to be.

7. Learn a new skill.

Make a list of skills and abilities that hold strong appeal for you. Include hobbies and skills that could lead to a job you’d enjoy.

Learning a new language and culture can open doors to new experiences that help you grow in self-knowledge, courage, and compassion.

Never stop learning. And if you’ve stopped already, start again.

8. Go on an adventure (sky diving, road trip, etc.)

If you don’t already have a bucket list, make one. Include things that sound crazy, expensive, dangerous (or all three).

Then make up your mind to tackle one of those things this week, this month, or in the next six months. Do something that scares your “I suck at life” self. Get excited.

9. Talk to a therapist about it.

Talk to someone who gets paid to listen and offer helpful (hard-earned) insights into your life.

Chances are, they’ll be less likely to tell you only what they think you want to hear. A good therapist is motivated to help you know yourself better and to improve your life.

10. Take a risk.

Maybe you’re feeling pessimistic about life because you haven’t really risked anything. You’ve settled into a “good enough” life that isn’t what you want. So, you numb yourself and muddle through, ultimately limiting yourself and your potential.

Try taking a small but meaningful risk just to see where it might lead.

11. Set a new challenge.

Challenge yourself to do something that scares you — an action someone you admire might take (or has taken) — whether that’s working as a volunteer, preparing for a fitness challenge, or taking steps toward a new career.

Give yourself an exciting new goal to work toward. Starting small is still starting.

12. Look for a new job.

If you hate your job, it’s time to take real action toward finding a better one. You’re getting nowhere complaining and feeling stuck and miserable.

The more you take action to improve your life, the better you’ll feel about it and about yourself, even if things don’t move as quickly as you’d like.

13. Volunteer in your community.

Serving your community in some way can open doors (and your eyes) to new possibilities and new relationships. If nothing else, you’ll meet others in your area who give their time and energy to help others with no expectation of a reward.

14. Look for a worthy cause to support.

Make a list of causes you believe in and would like to support in some way. If donating to them isn’t an option, you might find opportunities to volunteer for them or help spread the word about the good they’re doing.

How can you use the resources you have to help them do more?

15. Talk to someone who inspires you.

Ideally, go to someone who accepts you as you are and whose example you’d like to follow.

Ask them what they’re reading, what they’re up to, and what inspires them. Ask them questions that relate to their particular expertise, and be open to their suggestions.

Make a list of ideas that appeal to you. Then get to work.

Traveling is one of the simplest ways to quench your natural thirst for adventure; however, not every journey feels adventurous. Going to the same place, again and again, conventional means of travel and staying in luxurious hotels can make your vacation feel a lot less adventurous. In fact, the act alone is only an adventure if you make it so. This leads us to our next question – how do you make your trip feel more like an actual adventure? Here are six tips to help you out.

1. Pack Light

When packing light, you’re forced to rely a lot more on your own resourcefulness. This will make you explore more and look for local services that you won’t need otherwise. Packing fewer snacks will make you rely on local delicacies. Moreover, packing fewer clothing items will make you look for local laundries (the similar thing goes for other services, as well). Additionally, your wardrobe can be filled in as you go. This way, you will have a great story regarding the purchase of each item.

2. Interact With Everyone

Interacting with people you meet can become an integral part of your journey. This is how so many great stories come to be. Needless to say, non-verbal communication can allow you to talk even to people who don’t speak any of the languages you know. You would be surprised at just how many interesting people you can meet along the way. With the help of hyper-connectivity provided by social media, some of them may even become long-term online friends. Interacting with other cultures is probably the most important reason why people travel.

3. Go On A Road Trip

One of the most interesting ideas is for you to embark on a road trip. Using your personal vehicle for these purposes is generally a great idea because it gives you the freedom to completely customize the journey. This way, you can make the travel itself into a part of an adventure. For this, you can use a car or a motorcycle. Those who opt for the latter need to pick the right ride, seeing as how this may drastically impact their itinerary. The right bike with some quality bash plates can allow for efficient off-road travel.

4. Do Something Active

Closing yourself in a 5-star hotel for the duration of the trip is compelling and inviting but it is not adventurous. Being active is what can turn your journey into a proper adventure. For starters, you should look for authentic local accommodation. Then, start looking for adventures in your own vicinity. Hiking, swimming, paragliding, surfing, snorkeling and cycling in the area are just some of the things you could do in order to get the most out of your journey. People have a hard time forgetting emotions. So, even after they forget about the landscape they saw or the person they met on the journey, they won’t forget how it all made them feel.

5. Pick New Locations For Travel

Some places are so beautiful and full of life that you will feel the need to visit them again. Resisting the urge to do this and going somewhere new is incredibly important. Just think about it this way, by traveling to the same place year in and year out, you’re not really leaving your comfort zone – you’re just expanding it. Now, don’t get us wrong, there’s nothing bad about having that tried and proven go-to place for your vacation. If you’re looking for an adventure, on the other hand, it might be best to look for an alternative.

6. Travel On Your Own

Traveling with others is safer and often more fun. However, it makes you distracted from the journey and focused on your small social group. It also prevents you from interacting with others as much. Most importantly, it puts every single idea up for a vote and these votes don’t always go your way. So, if it’s an adventure you’re seeking, it might be better if you were to travel on your own. Keep in mind that if you have someone who is just as adventurous, this downside can be somewhat mitigated. Still, the choice of the right companion is sometimes hard to make.

While backpacking is the first thing that the majority of people think of when an adventurous journey is mentioned, this isn’t the only way to travel in an adventurous manner. There are many little choices and decisions you can make in order to make this trip feel like an adventure. These choices range from choosing an alternative means of travel to accommodation and the overall style of the journey. Where there’s a will, there’s always a way.
