Kourtney, who now adheres to a primarily vegan diet, kicks things off in the morning with carb-rich meals. Her go-to breakfasts include avocado or banana smoothies with vegan protein powder; slices of gluten-free, vegan cinnamon toast; blueberry bagels with peanut butter and jelly; or açai bowls. When she’s having a cheat day, she’ll get vegan chicken and waffles from Crossroads, an L.A.-based vegan eatery.

Between recording albums, making movies, filming TV shows, and making press appearances, there’s no denying that Rita Ora has a jam-packed schedule. However, even when the star’s traveling from coast to coast—or country to country—she manages to keep her fitness a priority.

In a recent ab-bearing Instagram post, Ora revealed the workout that’s keeping her toned when she’s on the go. Read on to discover which exercise routine Ora relies on to stay fit, and for more celebrity health and fitness news, check out Sherri Shepherd Reveals Her Abs in New Workout Video After 35-Pound Weight Loss.

On July 8, Ora posted a post-workout selfie to her Instagram Stories, revealing that she’d hit up Los Angeles-based Forma Pilates for a sweat session.

“A gallon of water and a little bit of @formapilatesla @lianalevi what could be better?” she captioned the pic. Just hours later, Ora—who’s recently been spending time in Australia while working as a judge on The Voice Australia— revealed that she was on the move again, posting a story from New York City.

During her time in Australia, Ora regularly posted videos of her workout from Acero, a gym that’s become a favorite among celebrities down under.

In addition to sparring in the ring, Ora tackled weight-based workouts at the gym, from cable rows to suspended crunches.

While Ora may be dedicated to her fitness routine, she admits that she exercises for her health and overall wellbeing, not to be a certain size.

“I didn’t start working out to get skinnier—I started working out to feel better. And I think it’s important for women to know that,” she told Shape. “Don’t be obsessed with being thin. You just have to be fit, healthy, and strong.”

Dave Benett / Getty Images for Audi

Ora isn’t a disciplinarian about her diet. Instead, she eats healthy, whole foods that support her fitness goals. While she’s admitted to forgoing both bread and sugar, the star told Shape that her meal plan is otherwise relatively forgiving.

“With the plan I’m on, you can eat quite a bit as long as you exercise. In the morning, I have two boiled eggs, asparagus, and half a cup of muesli with almond milk. For lunch, I have chicken or fish with vegetables, and for dinner, I have six to eight ounces of fish with vegetables and half a potato. Plus snacks,” she explained.

Kate Hudson has lost an impressive 25 pounds amid the pandemic by sticking to the WW (formerly Weight Watchers) plan. Now that she’s shed the weight she wanted to lose, the actor is focused on toning up, sharing her often grueling workouts with fans on Instagram. The star’s latest obsession? A water weight-based workout that tones her core, arms, and hips.

In a new video posted to her Instagram account, Hudson can be seen swinging a 20-pound water weight from Hydro Core around her head and waist.

“This gives ‘staying centered’ a whole new meaning for me 😜 First time taking this for a ride, definitely not the last 🌪,” Hudson captioned the video.

“I believe it’s crucial to incorporate rotational exercises to all athletic training programs. In other words, work in the transverse plane is a must,” said Hudson’s trainer, Brian Nguyen, of her new workout.

“First and foremost, it totally improves the neuromuscular connection between the core and the rest of the body. I mean, check out Kate’s movement in this tornado drill while she digs for speed: her core is fighting for more integrity (stability) while her mobile joints (hips and shoulders) seem to unlock more with every turn!” he added. “Moreover, working with rotational movement not only prepares us for the forces of real life but also increases our capacity for greater power and more explosiveness throughout one’s range of motion: true athleticism, that is.”

RELATED: Kate Hudson Reveals Her Intense Ab Workout for a Flat Stomach

Hudson hasn’t been shy about sharing her workout progress over the past year, posting photos of everything from yoga to weight training sessions to her Instagram.

“I grew up witnessing my parents take care of their bodies. People always ask me how I get motivated to stay in shape. The answer is, it’s what I know. It’s how I was raised. It’s engrained in my brain that honoring and working our body is a gift and so I don’t take it for granted. I loooove moving. I love when it’s challenging. I love being in charge of my results. And I looooove seeing my daughter have fun doing it with me. They watch everything we do! Gotta make some good moves for kids,” Hudson said of her workout motivation.

Working out can be a chore for some people—but Eva Longoria isn’t one of them. The former Desperate Housewives star has been making her exercise routine a whole lot more exciting with the addition of a single piece of equipment: a trampoline!

In a new video posted to her Instagram, Longoria reveals her trampoline workout, making the intense routine look easy and—dare we say it—fun.

In the clip, Longoria starts by doing a series of kicks, jumps, and knee raises on her mini JumpSport trampoline while wearing a pair of weighted gloves. She follows this by getting onto all fours on the trampoline and alternating leg extensions and lunges. Next up? A set of lower abdominal crunches and leg and hip exercises, which she tackles while lying on her back on the trampoline while wearing a set of ankle weights.

To cap off her workout, Longoria completes a series of sit-to-stand moves, using her trampoline as a base.

Bouncing around does come with some notable health and fitness benefits. “The trampoline is low impact on joints,” says Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford, M.D., an obesity medicine physician and educator specializing in the care of adults, adolescents, and children, who’s working with JumpSport Fitness to encourage the healthy habit of daily movement through their Maintain Your Weight campaign. “Using a fitness trampoline can help for those that may have excess weight or joint issues associated with the excess weight. Also, it is quite a fun activity to engage in!”

Longoria sure seems to think so!

As for how the actor manages to find time to tackle workouts between her busy career and parenting her son, Santiago, who turns three this month, Longoria told the Australian edition of Vogue, “You waste more time than you think. People say ‘I don’t have time to work out, I don’t have time to do this…When you just commit to it and you all of a sudden prioritize you realize, ‘Oh wait, I did have time.'”

“Especially as you get older, people want to know the secret to looking good and there is no secret. It’s diet and exercise,” she told the publication.

We all know that the secret to good health is to eat well and exercise frequently. However, as we enter our senior years and certain health issues begin to occur it can be all too easy to make excuses and to let those bad habits slip in. It is important we equip ourselves with the knowledge about what old age really means and familiarise ourselves with some of the potential problems we may experience later in life. And the sooner we start to make any necessary lifestyle changes now, the better our health will be in the future.

With this in mind, we want to look at some of the ways you can stay fit and healthy as you enter your senior years:

Use It Or Lose It

The old saying of “you need to use it or lose it” is never truer than in your twilight years and this is equally relevant to both our physical and mental health. To maintain the quality of life that you have been used to will require some effort, but it’s important to remember that you are no longer a teenager, and you cannot do some of the things you once could. Depending on your age and capability now may be the time to reach out and ask for help. Don’t worry we’re not sending you to a care home just yet, but there’s absolutely nothing wrong in looking at the options for live in care, especially if you are keen to keep your independence and continue living in your own home. A live in carer won’t take over your life, they are simply there to assist you and to help maintain the quality of life you are so desperate to keep hold of.

It might be that you are completely physically able, but your memory isn’t quite what it once was, and this can become a problem if it means you’re forgetting to take medication, or if you are struggling with certain day to day tasks. Or perhaps you’re the most switched on person you know, but frustratingly it’s your body that’s starting to let you down and you now find it a struggle to get up and down the stairs or do some of the household chores. Live in care can help with all of these things and more, but at the same time encourage you to keep on using your brain and your body in order to maintain that level of independence that we worry so much about losing.

As we age it is inevitable that our pace of life begins to slow and there’s nothing wrong with that, but there is a difference between slow and static. We must keep moving and we must keep looking after ourselves if we want to continue enjoying the life we have. After all, getting old doesn’t mean that it’s time to give up just yet. Many of us still have plenty of years ahead of us and staying fit and healthy in our senior years just means we get to enjoy those years a lot more than if we were to just sit back and do nothing

Stay Physically Active

Exercise, as we all know, is essential for good health. It helps us to maintain a healthy weight; it reduces the impact of illness and chronic disease; it improves flexibility, mobility and balance; and it is good for our mental health too. All very important factors as we get older.

If you are someone who has always exercised, then continuing this healthy habit may seem easy. And that’s true if your body hasn’t yet encountered any issues, but if you start to notice more aches and pains, it is important to listen to your body and adjust your workout accordingly. Any movement is good movement, even going for a walk or doing some gardening counts as exercise, and what is most important is that you are moving regularly in a way that doesn’t put strain on your body.

If on the other hand you are someone who is new to exercise, it doesn’t mean that age needs to be a barrier – you are never too old to start! You will however, have to be a lot more careful about the exercise you choose and this is where getting professional help will benefit you, as personal trainers will be able to work out a fitness plan completely tailored to your ability.

You may consider yourself too frail or too old to exercise, but that is really is no excuse. Everyone can exercise, it’s all about finding the right kind of exercise for you and adjusting the intensity accordingly. As a general guideline, adults over the age of 65 should be aiming to do some kind of activity every day, with at least 2 of them involving something like yoga, Tai Chi or Pilates to help with flexibility, balance and strength, and at least 15o minutes of moderate activity every week, such as a gym workout or a brisk walk etc. This kind of exercise will help make you feel stronger and can really help the fight against osteoporosis, which is a particular concern for women who have gone through the menopause and are now in their senior years.

Keep Your Mind Healthy

Regular exercise is also good for brain health and mental wellbeing, but there are also other things you can do to keep alert and cognitive in your senior years. Dementia and Alzheimer’s are common diseases among the elderly and while we can’t do anything to completely prevent them, especially if there is a family history, we can delay them for as long as possible. As we get older and start to slow down, so too do our brains. Just like the muscles in our body, if we use them less they work less and gradually they start to deteriorate. The same is true of our brain and the effect is that we become more forgetful and our ability to learn decreases.

Brain stimulating activities that are good for the senior years include crosswords and Sudoku, jigsaw puzzles, reading, chess and other board games. Activities such as these help stimulate parts of the brain that deal with problem-solving, memory, concentration and attention. It is essentially exercise for the brain, a mental workout if you like, and according to a study undertaken by the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, this can result in brain function that is 10 times younger than your actual age.

Activities like these are easy to come by, they’re cheap, and are simple enough to fit into your day. But what if your eyesight is starting to deteriorate? This is where the option of live in care could be of huge benefit, as they would be able to come in and assist you with this, by reading clues etc. or challenging you in ways you might not challenge yourself. And talking of challenges, while puzzles and word games are great for improving your memory, it is important to also continue to learn new things in your senor years, because learning and challenging yourself to try new things is what keeps the brain at its most active.

You could for example:

Learn a new language

Improve your computer skills

Trace your family tree

Follow a recipe to create a meal or cake that you’ve never made before.

Doing anything that mentally stretches you a little is great for brain health and also to instil a sense of purpose and self worth.

Eat Well

What and how we eat changes as we progress into our senior years. We generally need fewer calories as our metabolisms slow down and we move less. Eating well not only helps us in a physical sense, but it also promotes mental health, it boosts energy levels and can increase resistance to illness, which are all incredibly important factors in old age. And it’s important to remember that healthy eating doesn’t automatically translate as dieting and giving up the foods we love, it is about eating nutritionally balanced foods that support the body while still allowing us to enjoy and take pleasure in what we eat.

Foods that are rich in omega 3 fatty acids, such as olive oil, oily fish, nuts and seeds, are great ‘brain foods’, helping to improve cognitive function as well as keeping joints supple. It is a good idea to also include lots of calcium rich foods in your to reduce the risks of osteoporosis. Foods like canned fish that contain bones; green leafy vegetables; milk; cheese and yogurt are all great options.

If you live on your own, it can be hard to get motivated to cook for just one person. Batch cooking is great as it allows you to stock up the freezer with your own healthy ready meals that are nutritionally balanced and means you’ve always got something in. Spaghetti bolognaise, stews, chilli, and soup all freeze really well and it is easy to get extra vegetable portions into these. You can then add little extras like grated cheese or salad when you serve them. This will also allow you to save money at the supermarket, as you can buy bigger packs of things that you know won’t go off before you’ve had a chance to eat them.

If you are no longer able to cook for yourself, live in care will be able to assist with this and it means you can retain some degree of independence by telling them what foods to buy from the supermarket and the type of meals you like to eat. There may come a time in the future when moving into a care home becomes the best option for you, but before then it’s important to know that there are other choices available to you that mean you can remain in your own home.

Socialise

Loneliness is one of the biggest issues we face as we get older and this can have a serious impact on our health. It is estimated that over 2 million people over the age of 75 in the UK live on their own and more than a million only get to speak to close friends, family or neighbours just once a month. As humans we thrive in the company of others and without that interaction our health can rapidly go into decline.

If you are still able to get out and about by yourself, then it’s up to you to make the effort to look for new opportunities to connect with people. Reignite a passion for a hobby you once had by joining a group and make friends with like minded people. Or think about volunteering, a great way to connect with people whilst also helping out in the community too. This will also give you a sense of purpose that you may have missed from your younger days.

A live in carer would also be hugely beneficial if you aren’t so physically able, as they could help you to get around, either within your own home or out and about too. Plus they themselves offer that human connection, simply by visiting you when you need them.

Everyday we get older, it is something that is beyond our control. However, what we can control is how we approach old age and how our bodies and minds are equipped to deal with the issues that arise during our senior years. Taking the time to exercise, eat well, spend time with others and to keep ourselves mentally challenged are four simple ways that can help us to stay fit and healthy. And no matter what our personal circumstances or current health situation is, there is help out there if you are willing to accept it.

*collaborative post

If you’ve had trouble sticking to your fitness routine amid the COVID-19 pandemic, you’re far from alone. Despite having personal trainers and home gyms at their disposal, even celebrities have found it challenging to stay fit—and fitness expert, TV personality, and actor Brooke Burke is no exception. In an exclusive interview with Eat This, Not That!, Burke opens up about her relatable struggle to stay motivated over the past year.

When asked if she found it more difficult to stick to her workouts amid the pandemic, Burke candidly replies, “To be honest, yes.”

“Let’s face it: fitness can be boring and not everybody loves it,” says the multi-hyphenate star.

Burke, who recently launched a Summer Slim Down series via her Brooke Burke Body app, says that not having the camaraderie she usually finds in the gym was one of the biggest adjustments for her.

“The heat and intensity of being in a large class are different from the at-home experience,” she admits, noting that she particularly missed going to in-person SoulCycle and yoga classes amid COVID lockdowns. However, Burke says that she has a newfound appreciation for at-home workouts.

“I do believe in the digital gym at home,” she says. “The benefits are more efficient for both time and money. I have to work out smarter and harder to break a sweat. My programs on the Brooke Burke Body app do exactly that.”

RELATED: This Total-Body Home Workout Builds Strength and Burns Calories Fast

“I have learned to embrace the burn, crave the sweat, and understand the benefits of pushing through a workout and the energy that it creates.”

Despite the challenges of juggling a busy schedule and navigating life at home during COVID (with four kids to take care of, no less), Burke says that she has made a point to keep her wellbeing—and the “me time” her fitness routine provides—a top priority during this challenging period.

“Time has always been an excuse, so I’ve had to design a life schedule that works for me,” she says. “I’ve had to put myself on top of my to-do list.”

When she wants to improve her mental and physical wellbeing in one fell swoop, Berry turns to yoga.

“One of the most helpful stress-releasing practices for me is yoga. To me, it’s a physical form of meditation that allows me to move negative energy out of my body,” she told Women’s Health in 2020, noting that she tries to practice yoga at least three times a week. “It’s like the stress just lifts right out of me.”

It’s not just her diet that’s helped La La achieve her fit figure—she admits that she’s had help getting into shape from trainer Kirk Meyers, founder of The Dogpound, where celebs like Addison Rae, Kaia Gerber, and Noah Centineo also work out.

“I come here almost every single day and Kirk, the owner, has become one of my closest friends and a real inspiration in my life for getting myself together and focusing on myself,” she told E! “I definitely have lost weight. I definitely feel better about myself, more toned, have more energy.” In addition to Myers’ weight-based workouts, La La told HollywoodLife, “I love to box.”

While La La has admitted in the past that milk chocolate is her “biggest weakness,” she says she’s been able to tame her cravings with healthier alternatives.

“I’ve found other things that taste healthy, like dark chocolate. After a while, you train your taste buds to not want it as much,” she told the New York Post.

Despite her busy schedule, La La has made self-care a priority amid the pandemic.

“I’m that person that’s there for everybody all the time and I’m stretched so many different ways,” she explained during a 2020 episode of Girlfriends Check In. “I just feel like there’s not always a lot left over for me, so that’s something I’m trying to work on and not feel guilty about it.”

However, she said that giving herself some much-needed “me time” in small doses has been a major benefit to her overall wellbeing.

“Once you start doing it, you realize that you have to find ways to recharge and rejuvenate—even if it’s just taking five minutes to meditate,” she told Health in April 2021.

If you find exercise simply too much of a chore, you’ll be interested in a new military-led study whose findings were recently published in the Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research, which sought to answer perhaps the single biggest question that those who prefer to live a more sedentary lifestyle have been asking for eons: “What is the bare minimum amount of exercise one needs to do to keep ‘fit?'” Read on for the clear answer provided by the study. And for more news from the front lines of science, see why This Super-Quick Workout Is Scientifically Proven to Work, According to the Mayo Clinic.

iStock

Finding a benchmark minimum for exercise is obviously relevant for those who serve in the military—and especially for the personnel who are deployed overseas and may find that they don’t have as much time to log in the weight room. As such, the study was led by Barry Spiering, formerly Nike’s research director, who oversaw a group of researchers at the United States Army Institute of Environmental Medicine. Ultimately, the researchers loosely define keeping fit as “preserving endurance and strength.”

There are three main fitness components that the researchers highlighted: how often people should train, the volume of the training (distance, reps), and how intense those sessions are. The experts reviewed a series of previously conducted studies for answers.

Shutterstock

“In general populations, endurance performance can be maintained for up to 15 weeks when training frequency is reduced to as little as 2 sessions per week or when exercise volume is reduced by 33-66% (as low as 13-26 minutes per session), as long as exercise intensity (exercising heart rate) is maintained,” concludes the study.

So, if you like to run or swim for cardio, Spiering and team say that you only need to lace up your shoes—or put on your swimsuit—twice a week for less than half-an-hour at a time. Also, while you can bring down your frequency and your reps, you shouldn’t shirk the intensity. If you’re working out for 13 minutes, make it count.

Shutterstock

“Strength and muscle size (at least in younger populations) can be maintained for up to 32 weeks with as little as 1 session of strength training per week and 1 set per exercise, as long as exercise intensity (relative load) is maintained,” concludes the study. “Whereas, in older populations, maintaining muscle size may require up to 2 sessions per week and 2-3 sets per exercise, while maintaining exercise intensity.” And for more fitness news, see Why Everyone Is Going Crazy Over This Viral Walking Workout.

Shutterstock

The researchers observed that one of the three aforementioned components was the most important when it comes to maintaining a bare minimum for fitness: exercise intensity. “Our primary conclusion is that exercise intensity seems to be the key variable for maintaining physical performance over time, despite relatively large reductions in exercise frequency and volume.”

So if you’re only hitting the gym one or twice a week for a small amount of time, you need to maximize that time by keeping the intensity of your workouts high.

Shutterstock

Remember, the point of the study is not to see how much exercise people need to do to be fitter. Rather, it was to pinpoint exactly how much exercise is required to maintain a healthy state of endurance and strength. This is about finding a “bare minimum.”

With this benchmark in mind, you can take steps to actually grow your strength and fitness levels, and improve your health. If you only need two days a week to maintain your endurance levels, you can grow from there. If time is an issue—and it always is—remember that there are plenty of reasons why high-intensity interval training (HIIT) is such a popular way to train and keep fit. Vigorous bursts of exercise test your muscles, your heart, and your lungs, and science has proven that—when contained to reasonable lengths—it totally works. But let’s face it: The single biggest benefit to short bursts of training is arguably the fact that they’re short bursts. Why camp out at the gym for hours when you can reap the benefits in 10 minutes or less? For further proof, see why This Workout Drives 29 Percent More Fat Loss, According to Science.

All over the world, countless people silently struggled with conditions like depression, anxiety, and even suicidal thoughts. In many cases feeling thoroughly alone and not knowing where to turn. Fortunately, a lot of progress has been made in recent years, with increasing levels of focus placed on mental health care and more ways for people to deal with these difficult emotions, sensations, and challenges when they arrive.

But how can we try to safeguard ourselves from mental health problems in the first place? Well, there’s no way to eliminate the risks entirely, but one thing you can work on is increasing your mental and emotional fitness levels. In the same way that people pursue physical exercise to get stronger and improve their physical health to reduce the risk of injury and illness, we can also make ourselves mentally fit and ready to face possible challenges that lie ahead.

Here are some simple ways to make it happen.

1. Meditation

One of the best methods for improving mental fitness and emotional clarity is meditation. It’s a practice that has been used for literally thousands of years in various cultures and parts of the world to help people relax, clear their minds, de-stress, and become more mindful. And it can be of great help to those wishing to boost their mental fitness in the modern world too.

Various studies have looked into the benefits of meditation, finding that those who meditate regularly tend to be more focused, positive, and able to adapt to new changes and situations in life. In short, it can help to make you better prepared for challenges that lie ahead. One of the most effective methods is mindful meditation, which is all about focusing on your feelings and connecting with the world around you.

2. Calming Exercise

For those who want something a little more active than meditation but still wish to focus on mental health, as well as physical strength and stamina, calming exercises might be the ideal compromise. This kind of exercise can include the likes of yoga and stretching, helping to balance the body and mind, toning muscles while also harmonizing your mental state, improving balance and coordination while also reducing stress and promoting a sense of calm.

Calming exercises can be a great way to both start and end the day. First thing in the morning, they can help to focus your mind and prepare you for the day ahead, and in the evenings, they’re perfect for letting go of any stresses or worries of the day that has passed, preparing you for a peaceful and pleasant sleep ahead.

It’s common knowledge that a healthy sleep schedule is vital for general health and wellness, but few people are aware of just how important sleep really is for one’s mental health. Various studies have linked a lack of sleep or sleeping disorders with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and stress. Meanwhile, those who get their regular eight hours tend to be more focused, concentrated, and positive in their mood and mindset.

However, getting consistently good quality sleep is often easier said than done, and many people can struggle to drift off each evening. To remedy this, try to make some changes. Reducing screen time before bed, for example, can help your mind get into a more restful state. Yoga and meditation can also help, and some people find that white noise or soothing sounds help them rest more easily.

4. Cognitive Restructuring

Cognitive restructuring is also one of the keys to mental fitness, but what exactly is it? Well, the term itself might sound complicated, but it’s actually quite simple, and it can play a big part in helping you become a better-rounded person.

Cognitive restructuring is all about changing the way you view the world, yourself, and various situations in life, both at home and at work. It’s about becoming more open-minded by taking different views into account and looking at situations from different perspectives.

Let’s say you have a big presentation coming up, for example, and you’re struggling with stress about how it might go wrong. Cognitive restructuring can help you see the situation from other views, finding the precise issues you’re worried about and addressing them gradually to move towards a more positive state.

Overall, it’s clear to see that mental and emotional fitness are of the essence in today’s world. With reports suggesting that 1 in 4 people have mental health disorders of some kind, and countless individuals struggling with day to day stresses and concerns, looking after your mind is absolutely vital. With these methods, you can start to sharpen your mental fitness levels and face life more positively and effectively.
