A simple but often underappreciated way to live a happier life is through kindness.

So in this post I’d like to share the most powerful and best kindness quotes I’ve found in the past 10+ years. Thoughts from the past 2500 years about kindness and care for others but also towards yourself.

But first, why is kindness so powerful?

Well, here’s three of my favorite reasons that I keep in mind and that helps me to try to be a kinder person:

1. I get what I give.

Most people will over time tend to treat you as you treat them.

There will of course always be exceptions but don’t let those few people stop you from focusing on building new or deeper relationships with the help of kindness.

2. If I’m kinder towards others then I tend to be kinder towards myself.

Treating others with kindness will not only make you feel good and help you to improve your self-esteem.

I’ve also found that the way I treat others – no matter if that’s in a positive or negative way – has a big effect on how I think about and treat myself too.

3. Kindness keeps on rippling outward.

Me being kind towards someone makes them a bit happier and may turn their afternoon or day around. And so they extend a kind word or action to someone in their life. And that person may continue and pay the kindness forward.

That’s my three most important reasons. Now, on to the timeless wisdom.

And if you want even more self-loving inspiration then check out this post with quotes on knowing your true worth and value and this one about focusing on yourself.

How Can I Lift My Mood?

If you’re feeling blue or down on yourself, you don’t have to wait for a magical mood shift to happen. You do have some control over your emotions and how they impact your day.

Barring your having clinical depression or a life tragedy, the quality of your thoughts and actions can determine whether you languish in the doldrums or feel a skip in your step. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Don’t let yourself sink further into a bad mood by doing nothing. Positive action always makes you feel better.

Refrain from judging your negative emotions and shaming yourself about them. That only makes you feel worse.

Remember that moods are like storm clouds — they eventually pass. If your efforts to hurry them along don’t work, just be patient. They will pass in time. If not, you may need the support of a counselor or doctor to address what’s going on.

Get some bath or shower soap in a scent you like and enjoy a long, hot soak or shower. Finish off with some moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated and smooth.

18. Sing (or sing along).

Sing along to some favorite songs or sing them on your own — with or without company. Maybe make sure you close the windows first (neighbors).

19. Watch an old film.

Pick an old black and white film to watch. Make some popcorn or another favorite movie-watching treat. For extra credit, use this as a reward for finishing a task or two.

20. Exercise.

Even a short workout (under 10 minutes) can boost your mood and metabolism. Going for a walk counts, too. Reward yourself with a healthy snack or other self-care.

21. Donate old clothes, etc.

Go through your closet and remove anything you haven’t worn in a year or more. If it’s still in good enough shape, donate it — along with anything else you don’t need, use, or love.

22. Prepare a good meal.

If you feel comfortable doing this, save the cost of eating out by preparing a favorite meal for yourself and, if you like, a special guest. Buy some fresh flowers for the table.

23. Make a wish.

Light a candle for a special dessert and make a silent wish — eyes closed and with a gentle smile. Then blow it out, trusting your wish will come true if it would do you good.

24. Take a chance.

Do something that scares you if think it could change things for you in a good way. Take a risk and learn what you can from the experience, whatever happens.

25. Meet some friends for lunch (or drinks).

Meet a friend or group of friends at a favorite place for food or drinks. Enjoy catching up with each other, and plan your next meet-up before parting.

26. Order in some dinner.

If going out isn’t an option (or if you’d just rather not), order in something you enjoy — whether it’s Chinese, pizza, sandwiches, or something else. Savor every bite alone or with company.

27. Hug someone.

This works best if you’re hugging someone who wants to be hugged, so it can’t hurt to ask first. When you comfort someone else with a hug, you can’t help but feel comforted, too.

28. Break from your routine.

Take a break from your usual routine and do something fun. This is especially helpful when you feel stuck. If every day is the same, make this one different.

29. Create a vision board.

Get some poster board and look through old magazines for pictures and words to cut out and attach to it to your vision board. Or create a slideshow with Microsoft PowerPoint using images online.

30. Send a postcard to a faraway loved one.

Choose a postcard from a favorite place in town, write a thoughtful message on it, and send it to a loved one who lives far away. They’ll appreciate it, and you’ll get a vicarious boost.

31. Go shopping in a new store.

Walk into a store you haven’t visited yet. This could be a store someone recommended to you or just a place you’ve seen in passing. If it helps, buy something to keep or give as a gift.

32. Rearrange your furniture.

Sometimes just changing the look of a room you spend a lot of time in can help you let go of things you no longer need in your life — and make room for what you do.

33. Start a new home improvement project.

Maybe you want to paint a room, add a new framed picture arrangement, or upgrade the flooring. Whatever it is, do something today to get started with it.

34. Plan a trip.

If you could go anywhere in the world — or in your home country — where would that be, and what would you do there? Get a map and start planning your trip.

35. Tidy up and add something new.

Tidy up a room you spend a lot of time in to refresh it and make it feel more open and spacious — and less burdened by its past. What you do to your space, you do to yourself.

36. Have a good cry.

Sometimes, you just need to let yourself cry. If making time for it isn’t enough, try writing down the thoughts you keep pushing back and the feelings that go with them.

37. Find a pet.

If you’re able to care for a pet animal, find one that fits your personality and lifestyle. Choose one that chooses you back. And prepare a special place for them in your home.

38. Revisit an old hobby.

Maybe you haven’t knitted or crocheted in a while, but you see a new yarn you’d like to try. Buy a skein and use it to create a small item you can enjoy or give to someone as a gift.

39. Do some research.

Do some digging on a subject of interest and document your research. If you have a blog and you learn something others would find useful, consider writing a blog post about it.

40. Read a good book (or listen to one).

Choose a novel or nonfiction book that interests you and block out some time for reading, maybe with some soothing music in the background. Or listen to an audiobook while relaxing.

41. Connect with a friend.

Call, text, or email a friend to check in on them. For all you know they may need cheering up as much as you do. See if you can surprise them with a coffee/tea or their favorite flower.

42. Practice some positive affirmations.

Affirmations are positive statements about yourself or a goal you want to achieve. Even if the statement isn’t true at this moment, speaking an affirmation out loud cements the idea in your mind and fosters the mindset to make it true.

43. Write a love letter to yourself.

Write a letter to yourself praising all of the wonderful things about you. Write it as though you were writing to someone you deeply care about, and you want them to know how amazing they are. Then read it to yourself as though you received it from a beloved friend.

44. Learn a fun, new skill.

Try out a new skill that isn’t too challenging but just difficult enough that it takes some concentration and focus. This focus puts you into a flow state and prevents you from dwelling on negative thoughts. Before you know it, you’ll be immersed in the skill and forget about your troubles.

45. Write a silly children’s story.

Is there a child in your life? Write an age-appropriate story that he or she will love. Make the child the main character and involve them in a silly adventure or crazy situation. Draw some pictures to go with the story, or if you’re writing on your computer, find some free clip art to illustrate your story.

Did you find some things to cheer you up?

The more you bring joy and comfort to others, the more of both you bring into your life.

Lift others up, and you lift yourself up.

Be generous to others with your time, energy, and other resources, and you become a conduit for blessings — a walking irrigation system.

While helping others, though, remember not to neglect your own self-care needs.

Tell yourself the things you need to hear, especially if no one else will say them.

And don’t let other people’s unwillingness to say those things stop you from becoming who you want to be. You’re the only one responsible for that.

May you allow yourself to shine today and celebrate all that you’ve accomplished so far.

“When one door of happiness closes, another opens, but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one that has been opened for us.”’
Helen Keller

“Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.”
Mahatma Gandhi

Living a life where you’re happier and kinder towards yourself is not just about what you can do.

But also about what you are already doing. And especially those habits that do have a negative and unhappy impact on your life.

So this week I’d like to share 9 such habits. And what have helped me a whole lot to do instead.

1. Stop overthinking.

Overthinking can make any issue seem bigger and scarier than it actually is. It can hold you back in life and from taking action.

What to do instead:

Set short time-limits for decisions.

For example: For small decisions like if should go and do the laundry, start writing a new article or work out I usually give myself 30 seconds or less to make a decision.

For somewhat larger decisions that would have taken me days or weeks to think through in the past I set a deadline for 30 minutes or at least for the end of the workday.

Keep a simple reminder where you cannot avoid seeing it every day.

A note that said “Keep things extremely simple” on the white board I saw many times each day helped me greatly to – over time – minimize my overthinking.

2. Stop swimming in the sea of the most negative voices.

Our happiness is greatly influenced by the people and the other sources around us.

If you swim around in a sea of negative people and information that drag you down into fear, frustration and feeling powerless then that will limit your life.

What to do instead:

Figure out what the biggest time-wasters and energy-drains are among all those things that influence you.

What 1-2 people drag you and your thoughts down the most?

What 1-2 other sources like blogs, forums, books, magazines, social media channels and TV-shows have the biggest negative impact?

Write those answers down. Then think about what 1-2 people and 1-2 other sources that lift you up and make you feel happier about yourself and life the most.

Make a decision to spend less time with the 2-4 negative sources and to spend the time you have now freed up with those positive influences you listed.

3. Stop getting stuck in the past or future.

Spending too much time in the past usually leads to going over old mistakes or failures over and over again and to wishing you could go back and do something about them.

And spending too much time thinking about the future usually leads to worries and to building monsters and nightmare scenarios in your mind.

What to do instead:

Spend more of your time in the present moment. You’ll feel lighter, things will feel easier and you’ll be more alert to appreciate the small wonders of everyday life.

Reconnect with what’s happening right now by just sitting down and being still. Then either:

Just breathe. Spend a couple of minutes on focusing on just your breaths going in and out.

Only focus on what is going on around you right now. Do it with all your senses. Listen, see, smell and feel what is happening in your little part of the world at this moment.

4. Stop setting a too high bar for happiness.

A common mistake I used to make was to set a too high bar for my own happiness.

And so I usually only felt happy when I achieved something big, when I did something perfectly or when something unexpected and wonderful happened.

You don’t have to wait for those rare occasions to feel happy though.

What to do instead:

Tell yourself this as you get out of bed in morning:

Today I will have a low bar for happiness.

To remember to do this, consider writing it down on a note or on your smart phone so you see it first thing in the morning.

By doing so you’ll take fewer things for granted. Your attention will naturally be more on what is happening in your daily life and you’ll be more grateful for the things there.

Like the food, the weather, hanging out with a friend or a pet for a while, the small gestures of kindness and the small moments that pass by so quickly.

This has at least been my experience with this habit. And it has not decreased my drive to achieve things or to get to done.

Instead it has made daily life lighter to live. And the path to what I want to achieve a happier one to walk on.

5. Stop comparing yourself to other people.

Comparing yourself to other people can easily become a destructive and depressing daily habit.

You compare relationships, cars, careers, bodies and houses and at the end of the day your self-esteem is low and you feel like a failure with negativity buzzing around in your head like a swarm of irritating bees.

What to do instead:

Compare yourself to yourself. Just see:

And don’t forget to celebrate the small successes and steps forward too.

This habit will help you to see yourself from a kinder and more helpful perspective where you feel energized as you appreciate the steps you have taken on your journey.

Instead of feeling drained and powerless to keep growing and to keep going for what you want out of life.

6. Stop doing things too fast.

When you go fast pretty much all the time while walking, talking, driving or working then you tend to feel more stressed.

Your focus more easily becomes scattered and it becomes harder to think clearly.

What to do instead:

Slow down. Walk, talk, move, drive and work slower. As you you do that:

The stress in your body and mind will float away.

You’ll naturally be more in the moment.

You’ll enjoy all the smells, sights, sounds and experiences of life even more.

7. Stop pushing away how you deep down feel.

It is one thing to focus on what is positive in life.

But it is another thing to try to push away how you deep down feel about something.

And it usually doesn’t lead to happiness even if you try to turn on a smile and force the positivity.

What to do instead:

Write it or talk it out.

Don’t force the positive thinking. If you have negative feelings or thoughts that pop up again and again then take some time with yourself to think it through.

A pen and paper or a journal on your computer can help you to think more clearly. Or you can talk about it with someone close to you.

Create a small plan.

After you have accepted and processed how you think and feel about this then write down a small plan – maybe just a step or a couple of them – that you can take action on to move yourself out of this situation and into something better.

And after that get going and get the ball rolling by taking the first small and practical step forward.

8. Stop spending too little energy and attention on what truly matters to you.

It is easy to get lost and misspend too much of your day and week.

On things you might just do out of habit or because you feel you should. On busywork or on things that honestly deep down isn’t that important to you.

What to do instead:

Get your priorities in check. Focus on what truly matters for YOU.

Ask yourself: what are the top 4 most important things in my life this year?

Maybe it is your family. Or your hobby and to become a better photographer. Or your health and getting in shape. Or an important project at work or in your own business.

Sit down, really think about it and reduce what matters to just the essentials.

Then take out a pen and a small piece of paper and write down just your top 4 priorities for this year.

Put that note where you cannot avoid seeing it every day. Like in your work space. Or beside your bathroom mirror or on your fridge.

This will help you to keep your focus on the right track every day.

9. Stop waiting for someone else to make you happier.

Don’t make the all too common mistake of waiting for someone else to create the week, month and year you want to have. That usually leads to much waiting and frustrations.

What to do instead:

Be proactive. Get the ball rolling yourself. Take action and take the first small step forward with making the changes you want to make to create the life you want to live.

Set up a coffee date or an evening at the pub with those most positive people in your life.

Set the low bar for happiness as you jump or drag yourself out of bed in the morning and go slow today.

Sit down tonight and write down those four most important things for you this year.

And if it feels difficult and you start to procrastinate then remember that you can always take smaller steps forward.

Do whatever is needed to reduce that mental barrier and to get yourself to begin or back into taking action again.

Best Man Speech: “I met Caleb when I was 15. I’ve been with him through a broken collar bone when he got sacked in football, being suspended from school when we well…let’s just say got in trouble. I’ve been with him through his first heartbreak and I will never forget the night he told me he was going to marry Jackie. You two are meant for each other, I knew it from the first time I saw you together. So, let’s raise a glass to Caleb and Jackie, today is a day filled with happiness but remember, This Too Shall Pass”.

Can you imagine?

Have you ever been having the time of your life, laughing, smiling, you are feeling so happy and then someone says to you, “This too shall pass”? Probably not!

That phrase is usually only used when you are going through a challenging time in your life, not something you would hear at a wedding, birthday party, the excitement from a promotion…am I right?

This too shall pass is a Persian phrase that reflects on the temporary nature or impermanence of anything and everything.

An early English citation of “This too shall pass” appears first in 1848. It was also notably used in a speech by Abraham Lincoln before he was president in 1859.

This too shall pass means that the difficult things you are facing will pass, but it also does mean the amazing things you experience will pass as well. In other words, impermanence.

What is impermanence?

Impermanence is the state of accepting that everything is temporary. Acceptance of impermanence is not meant to make you a Debbie Downer. The idea is that it allows you to cope more easily with challenging times if you can accept that life is fluid.

If you come to the conclusion that life is not permanent, and neither is anything in it (relationships, children, job, physical capabilities, financial status, etc.), then you are more likely to react gracefully when something in your life changes.

Impermanence can give you hope that the painful moments you are facing will not last forever. It also can encourage you to work on being more present because the truth is that you, your relationships, your job, and your mental state will not always be in a permanent state of happiness and bliss.

“When things are bad, remember: It won’t always be this way. Take one day at a time. When things are good remember: It won’t always be this way. Enjoy every great moment.” –Doc Zantamata

What can you gain by learning to accept impermanence?

You accept that bad things will come to an end

You accept that good things will come to an end

You accept ALL emotions are fluid and will not last forever

You accept that life is dynamic, not static

When you are happy, enjoy it! Treasure those moments and be as present as you can be. When you are hurting, feel it, acknowledge it, learn from it and know it will not last forever. You never know if your next moment will be a good moment or bad moment, but what you do know is that whichever it is, it will change.

How do you accept impermanence? Well, you already have before and probably didn’t even realize it. Think back to the last time you had the cold or the flu. You didn’t say to yourself, “Ok, this is it. It’s been a good life. I’m dying.” Ok, maybe you felt like that for a second, but in reality, you knew that it would last 3-5 days and you would feel better again. That is practicing and accepting impermanence.

Embracing impermanence in my life has made me more mindful of living in the present and more emotionally grounded. It also reminds me that things will happen in life that I don’t have control over, but I get to control how to respond to them.

Let’s try that Best Man Speech again…

“I met Caleb when I was 15. The advice I give you today I’ve learned during my own journey. In my own marriage and in life, I have learned to embrace impermanence. You will have amazing moments together, that will pass. You will have challenges you will face, that will pass as well and be replaced with happy moments again. This journey you are on together is fluid and will forever be changing, embrace all of it! It’s all a part of the ride you are taking together. Oh, and have lots of sex! Let’s raise a glass to Caleb and Jackie!”

If you took a good hard look in the mirror and thought about your life, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? For too many people, the reality is that you’re not spending your time the way you want to. Too much of your agenda is driven by outside circumstances.

If you thought about what made you happy and how much of that you were incorporating into your life right now, the thought would frustrate you. Successful leadership happens from a place of freedom and the ability to spend your time on what you want to be doing.

If you looked at your goals, how many are what you truly want? If you’re not experiencing the kind of success and growth you’d like in your life, the reality is that your daily choices are keeping you from that place.

If it’s your goal to optimize your growth, which in turn creates more of it and leads to getting more done, it’s time to look at the daily choices you’re making. It’s time to get honest about whether or not you’re making decisions from a place of self-prioritization.

Here are three daily choices that help you pursue growth in a way that aligns with your vision, purpose and the things you want to do. Here’s how to have happier life experiences.

1. Adjust your schedule to be proactive versus reactionary

Too often, we don’t end up spending the time we’d like to on our goals, dreams, and the things that create freedom. This misalignment happens because we’re living life reactionary. We’re trying to catch up to items on our to-do list, and as we’re doing the work, new demands come in.

When we think about our schedule and what we have to do, we’re always behind instead of being proactive. Successful leaders have figured out that if they’re going to accomplish more and create freedom, their schedule must be optimized and full of power moves.

One of the keys to exponential growth is setting a schedule from a place of self-prioritization and not letting outside circumstances influence your schedule. You create a routine and a schedule that is proactive and allows you to work in focused blocks.

Being proactive means you set boundaries in your schedule, with outside circumstances, and with yourself — to stay focused. Stop living life feeling as if you’re always trying to catch up. Take a breath, look at what makes sense, and create a schedule that allows you to feel like you’re the CEO of your life.

“It is not the length of life, but the depth of life.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

2. Find an optimized daily routine that works for you

YouTube is littered with “day in the life” videos and “how I start my morning” content. If you looked at those videos, you’d probably be shocked at the number of views, comments, and engagement. These videos are so successful because people are desperately searching for a routine that could work for them.

A lot of those videos tend to be staged, but the idea behind them has some merit. While a specific routine worked for somebody else, it doesn’t mean that routine would be the best fit for your life, archetype, and how your body operates.

To foster optimized growth, you have to find a routine that works for you. That routine might be waking up early in the morning, working later at night, working in two-hour blocks, or everything in between. The key to a powerful routine that allows you to get more done is knowing yourself. This growth starts from a place of self-awareness.

To get more done, accomplish your goals, and live a freedom-based lifestyle, you have to find an optimized routine that allows you to work, play, and live life in a way that makes sense for your architect.

Your success will not necessarily come from modeling the success of somebody else. We’re all human beings and have different goals, ambitions, and archetypes. Successful leaders figure out what schedule and routine work best for them, and they implement it consistently. That’s the key — once you’ve found what works for you, consistency will be the way you create growth.

3. Break up the constant work with pleasure

If the Instagram memes were to be believed, the hustle 24-7 lifestyle is the only way to success. Let me let you in on a little secret — it’s not. Too many leaders are chasing an image of success that burns them out and frustrates them towards the process. If you’re all work with no pleasure built into your life — what’s the point?

Work in a focused way and get more done, but you should also incorporate moments of fun and pleasure. You can create a routine that has you working for a specific time, and the reward for that focused work is pleasure. That pleasure could be watching a fascinating YouTube video, watching TV, playing video games, reading a book, or listening to a podcast.

Only you know what pleasure means for you, but the goal is to train your brain to look forward to a reward for all of your hard work. Dan Miller is quoted as saying that when people look at his life, he doesn’t want them to be able to differentiate between whether he’s working or playing. It all mixes.

You’re working hard on your goals and creating a better version of yourself. You want to create a life that gives you flexibility and freedom. That life should be filled with an abundance of pleasure alongside hard work. Remember why you’re doing this, and remember that you have to take care of yourself first. Human beings are designed to appreciate pleasure.

The success, growth, and accomplishment you seek are possible when you optimize your daily choices and create a life from a place of what you want to be doing. Stop chasing someone else’s image of success, and don’t be influenced by the unseen pictures on social media of what it means to be successful.

If you’re going to have the necessary strength and energy to accomplish your goals and create a successful life, it has to come from an optimized place. Take care of yourself first and foremost. Drive towards the vision of success that you want to attain.

Humility.

It’s one of those things I didn’t really understand the point of when I was younger.

But with age and time I learned how important it was for me to stay sharp, to keep moving forward in life, to be kinder and to not create problems for myself by thinking I was better and smarter than I actually was.

That’s what I’ve gained from that sobering humility. But today I’d like to share not only the impact it has had on my own life but also the best quotes I have found about humility.

The top timeless thoughts about staying humble and not getting lost in pride or arrogance but to stay grounded in humility and reality.

And if you want more motivation to keep your feet on the ground and yourself happy then also have a look at this post about empathy and also this post filled with quotes about inner peace.
