Many of us don’t get nearly enough vegetables in our daily diets, but this food group is important for your overall health, especially when it comes to healthy weight loss.

“Eating plenty of veggies at every meal can help because this way you’re not walking around hungry, and you’ll also be getting a lot of plant (phyto)nutrients, fiber, vitamins, and minerals for very few Calories,” says Dana Ellis Hunnes PhD, MPH, RD and author of Recipe for Survival.

One recent systematic review published in Nutrients concluded that increasing your consumption of vegetables is associated with more weight loss in overweight and non-overweight individuals.

Shutterstock

“Fiber helps with gut health and digestion overall, and can help your GI tract regulate many important hormones that play a part in sending signals to the brain,” says Morgyn Clair, MS, RDN, author at Fit Healthy Momma.

According to a study published in the Journal of Nutrition, increased fiber intake was associated with weight loss in participants who were considered overweight.

“Specifically, viscous fibers have been shown to increase feelings of fullness and promote weight loss in many clinical studies. Viscous fibers form a gel-like substance in the gut, which can reduce feelings of hunger. Rich sources of viscous fiber include things like asparagus, Brussels sprouts, sweet potatoes, apricots, mangoes, oranges, legumes, barley, and oat bran,” says Clair.

Shutterstock

Losing weight doesn’t mean you have to give up your favorite desserts, especially because super-restrictive dieting can have some negative consequences. However, it is helpful to monitor how much added sugar we are consuming and take a look at opportunities for healthier alternatives every now and then.

“Eating something like frozen berries, for example, for dessert instead of sugary sorbet or ice creams can save a lot of calories from sugar while also giving you a lot of fiber, phytonutrients, vitamins, and minerals,” says Hunnes.

One of the easiest and most important habits to incorporate into your routine is making sure you’re drinking enough water on a daily basis.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

“Enough fluid in the body is essential for reaching and maintaining a healthy weight. Not only is water calorie-free, but it can help your body regulate hunger and fullness cues,” says Clair. “Oftentimes when the body is thirsty, it manifests as hunger, so staying hydrated can help you to say no to unhealthy snacking habits.”

Social media has been buzzing about The Bro Diet.

No, it’s not the latest viral horror film which involves the consumption of meatheads — although that’s probably in the works as we speak.

Instead, the Bro Diet is an eating plan for muscle gain and/or weight loss, derived from bodybuilding traditions of the ’70s.

It’s both extremely disciplined, which appeals to diet experts, yet its devotees find it extremely simple and easy to follow.

What Is the Bro Diet?

You could say that the Bro Diet is meal prepping on steroids, figuratively speaking.

Casually passed down from lore around the gym, the diet focuses on simple, whole sources of protein, carbs, and fats.

It’s a starter version of the regimen known as IIFYM (If It Fits Your Macros), in which the top priority is consuming a certain amount of those three macronutrients — protein, carbohydrates, and fat — each day.

What Can You Eat on the Bro Diet?

“The Bro Diet includes many healthy whole foods like chicken, rice, vegetables, oatmeal, eggs and especially egg whites, and discourages consumption of saturated fat, sugar, and alcohol,” says Jim White, ACM, Ex-P, CPT, a registered dietitian and certified personal trainer in Norfolk, Virginia.

While there are many ways to interpret the Bro Diet, it creates a lineup of predictable, go-to foods that are easily measured to help dieters create a calorie deficit.

Bro Dieters often prep these foods ahead of time and refrigerate them in containers to be quickly reheated or eaten as-is.

While there are no rules against seasonings or creative preparations, most dieters tend to keep things super-simple.

Instagram is rife with pictures (tagged #brodiet) of meal prep containers filled with unseasoned chicken breasts, plain rice and vegetables.

To outside observers, the biggest knock against the regimen is that it can seem bland and repetitious.

But to proponents of the diet, the simplicity has its virtues.

“Some folks require variety and some don’t,” a Bro Dieter nicknamed “MythicalStrength” said on Reddit’s /r/naturalbodybuilding forum.

“I can eat the same thing every day and be content. It helps to be distracted while eating, like watching TV or YouTube. Takes my mind off it. Simple and tasty recipe for me is slow cooker pot roast. Buy pot roast, put it in water in slow cooker, dump in onion soup, let cook on low for 8 hours.”

But, he added, “My other recipe was just meat.”

What Are the Benefits of the Bro Diet?

“In taking a look at the Bro Diet through a scientific lens, there are beneficial aspects of the diet and some inherent pitfalls,” says White.

First, the good news. The two main tenets of the Bro Diet have been found to be highly effective for weight loss and muscle-building:

Planning ahead

Portion control (although there is no specific calorie count)

It’s easy to follow and adhere to, and illustrates how popular meal prepping has become.

“Structured meal plans, with frequent (some Bro Dieters eat six meals per day, while others partake in the standard three) intervals, offer the best success rates for diet adherence,” says White.

“Regularly planned meals decrease hunger and improve appetite control. Regular meals may also affect our health — increased meal frequency appears to have a positive effect on various blood markers, particularly LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol and insulin.”

What Are the Drawbacks of the Bro Diet?

But the diet isn’t without its potential issues:

Bro Dieters can get fixated on protein and cast vegetables aside. A lopsided emphasis on protein or omission of other beneficial nutrients is bad for your body.

Getting too fixated on a routine can mess with your head.

The boredom factor could undermine your desired results.

White says there are many pitfalls to the Bro Diet.

“Although diet monotony has proven to be an effective strategy for successful weight loss and maintenance, an individual who lacks variety in their diet can end up with gaps in their nutrition. When you’re always consuming the same foods, you must also consider the micronutrients, or vitamins and minerals, you could be missing which are essential for your body to function and stay healthy,” explains White.

For example, bodybuilders’ diets have a tendency to overemphasize protein while cutting carbs; but research shows that eating fast-acting carbohydrates alongside protein is necessary to effectively grow muscle, says White.

Also, the repetition and rigorous planning involved in the diet might be inspirational — or lead to dietary rebellion and unhealthy eating patterns.

“This can lead to binge eating, feelings of guilt after cheat meals, and can promote generally unhealthy behaviors like avoiding social situations where food will be present and missing out on celebrations,” says White. “There are many stories among competitive bodybuilders of battles fought with eating disorders, disordered eating patterns and distorted body image.”

The Bottom Line

These days, Instagram-friendly eating plans seem to come and go at an increasingly rapid rate. Experimenting with the Bro Diet (or a modified version) won’t necessarily lead to dietary disaster.

It could be a good short-term option for a dietary reset, after which you resume one classic — scientifically supported — recommendation for a healthy diet: variety.

“Several studies suggest that people who consume the widest range of healthy foods are less likely to develop metabolic syndrome and tend to have smaller waists, lower blood sugar and blood pressure levels,” says White. “Also, research has found that consuming a variety of foods promotes the diversity of your gut bacteria, which seems to play a role in everything ranging from guarding against heart disease, to our overall mood, immunity, and the storage of abdominal fat.”

While rebooting your eating habits, the Bro Diet can also help develop solid meal prepping practices. White stresses variety with this process as well.

“If you have a busy lifestyle and like the idea of meal prepping, just make sure to rotate different recipes and meals into the cycle each week,” he says.

You’ve made the decision to eat more healthfully — now what? How do you know what basic groceries you’ll need to prep healthy meals and stick to your nutrition goals?

Grocery shopping can be overwhelming as it is — according to the Food Marketing Institute, the average supermarket has around 30,000 items to choose from.

So we asked nutrition experts to explain the best methods for coming up with a basic grocery list of healthy staples you should always have on hand in your kitchen.

How to Create a Basic Grocery List

“It’s always best to go to the grocery store with a basic grocery list in hand — this can help prevent impulse buys and keep you on budget,” says Krista Maguire, R.D., C.S.S.D. and Nutrition Manager for Beachbody.

The good news?

Once you take the time to nail down a good basic grocery list, it’ll only take only a few minutes to figure out what you need on future shopping trips.

“I find the best way to go about building a healthy grocery list is to plan out your meals for the week,” adds Maguire. “When you have an idea of what you’ll be eating, you’ll know exactly what you need to buy.”

Use the basic grocery list below as your baseline, then add whatever additional ingredients you’ll need for any healthy recipes you plan to try this week.

Most recipes yield multiple servings, so if you live alone, plan on using the leftovers as meal prep.

For example, say you want to make spaghetti with spinach and ground turkey: “You’ll likely buy one box of pasta, one package of ground turkey, one jar of pasta sauce, and one bunch of spinach,” says Maleah Staton, R.D.

That’ll yield enough food to cover 4 to 6 of your meals for the week.

Creating a Basic Grocery List on a Budget

It’s expensive to eat healthy — or is it? Healthy food has a reputation for being a wallet buster, but you can eat well on a budget if you plan ahead.

“If you’re on a budget, you can opt for recipes and foods that are less expensive,” says Maguire. “For example, choosing chicken over steak should save some money, or eggs instead of fish.”

Bulk foods are usually more affordable than pre-packaged foods, so Maguire recommends buying pantry staples like grains, beans, nuts, and spices in bulk.

And don’t pay for the convenience of pre-chopped fruits, veggies, and salad mixes.

“Sticking to whole foods instead of packaged items is a great way to lighten the total grocery bill,” Maguire says.

It may take some extra time to prep your foods, but your wallet will thank you.

The Best Staple Foods to Add to Your Basic Grocery List

There are certain healthy foods you should always keep on hand, so they’re there when you need a snack or a last-minute healthy meal.

“There are so many things you can do with chicken breast, ground turkey, eggs, and organic tofu,” says Maguire.

“Also, [stock up on] a variety of canned beans — like garbanzo beans to make hummus, or black beans to throw in a breakfast taco or on top of a salad or into a mixed grain and veggie bowl, she adds.

And make sure you always have the ingredients you need to make the healthy treats you (and your taste buds) love.

“Some staples I find myself always buying include oatmeal, bananas, almond milk, nut butter, walnuts, eggs, avocado, and sprouted bread,” says Maguire.

Here are the healthy staples you need.

For the refrigerator and freezer:

Fresh fruit (“It’s nice to have some you can grab for on-the-go snacks like bananas or apples,” says Maguire.)

Frozen fruit

Fresh veggies

Frozen veggies (“My freezer staples include frozen riced cauliflower, frozen kale, and broccoli,” says Staton.)

Protein of choice (chicken, fish, steak, organic tempeh, organic tofu, canned tuna, or salmon)

Milk or an unsweetened non-dairy milk alternative

Unsweetened plain Greek yogurt

Eggs (ideally local or pasture-raised eggs)

For the pantry:

Non-refrigerated fruits and vegetables (sweet potatoes, avocados, tomatoes)

Dry whole grains (oats, quinoa, brown rice)

Canned beans (garbanzo, pinto, black)

Dry pasta

Bread (sprouted or whole grain)

Nut butters

Condiments (olive oil, vinegar, mustard, salad dressing, salsa)

Natural sweeteners (honey, maple syrup)

Snacks (air-popped popcorn, whole-grain crackers, dried fruit, nuts)

For the spice rack:

Spices can really amp up the flavor in healthy dishes without adding calories or sugar.

“I love using basil in Asian or Italian dishes and cilantro, curry, and cumin in Mexican or Indian dishes,” says Staton.

Keep these on hand:

Sea salt

Pepper

Basil

Cilantro

Curry

Cumin

Garlic powder

Onion powder

Chili powder

Cinnamon

Thyme

Oregano

Rosemary

Embarking on a health journey can be one of the most rewarding things you do in your life. Not only does living healthier increase your life expectancy, but it also makes you happier and more energetic within the first few hours of beginning. The following will explore a few excellent tips for people just beginning their health journey, so that you too can lead a healthy life.

1. Smaller Consistent Habits Are Better Than Big Rare Ones

Whenever trying to make changes in your life, it’s better to make smaller changes that are consistent than to make every change you’ve ever heard of for two weeks before burning out. It’s a good idea to focus on one new habit at a time and devote your time and energy to that habit for at least a month before adding or removing something new. This means you can make about 12 lasting changes each month. When it comes to things that impact your digestion or gut bacteria, like adding in more fiber or probiotics, this is especially important. Your gut bacteria needs gradual changes if you want to avoid cramps, bloating, and gas.

2. Get Ready For The Internal Struggle

Whenever you’re making changes in your life, you’re going to come face-to-face with beliefs you have that limit your potential and maybe even harm you. This is completely normal. We were all raised in the same school system with the same television commercials and by parents within the same range of generations who often read the same hyper-misleading parenting books. Everyone has damaging beliefs. Whenever the desire to quit pops up, it will probably be accompanied by a thought like, “Well, it’s easy for her, she started only 20lbs overweight, or “Well, of course, he can do it; he’s got the money to pay for all the fancy stuff.” Every time a thought like this occurs, remind yourself that thoughts aren’t always true, and then seek out an example of someone who disproved the thought. Someone who started in far worse shape than you did or someone who started with less money than you did.

3. Get Ready For The External Struggle

Anyone who starts healthy habits and sticks to them will run into this at some point. When you’re doing something that other people aren’t doing because it’s good for you, people will get abrasive from time to time. People get defensive or offensive when you’re making a better choice than they are in their presence. To mitigate this, definitely avoid ranting about how much more energized you feel and only share health tips if someone asks. Yes, it’s hard to keep everything you’ve learned to yourself when you feel so much better, but people don’t like unsolicited advice and tend to dig their heels in, meaning that offering unrequested advice can actually result in a person being less healthy for the remainder of their life.

4. Good Water Is Your Best Friend (BUT Most Water Is Bad)

You probably know you need to be drinking more water to lead a healthy life. It’s vital for every aspect of health. You’re probably unaware of how terrible most water quality is. As recommended by the experts at mytopfitness.com, research different filtration options regardless of where you live. Townships chlorinate the water they provide to kill bacteria, despite knowing that this increases cancer risk. Microplastics galore are floating in bottled water causing endless hormone issues which in turn impact weight, sleep, mood, relationships, sexuality, and energy levels (and no, BPA-free plastic isn’t okay, it’s simply plastic with one toxin removed—there’s still a ton of other toxins present). Low levels of SSRIs, birth control, and other prescription medications are in city water as well. People take these medications, then excrete them into the water system in the form of urine. Of course, this water is filtered before it gets back into your home, but medication filtering isn’t included.

5. Sugar Is Enemy Number One

When it comes to health at the moment, no enemy is more hardcore than sugar. It has snuck into almost everything we eat with devastating effects. Sugar is linked to every chronic illness and mood disorder that we know about. Cutting out anything with added sugar can make a world of difference (once you get through the sugar withdrawal symptoms, that is). Be prepared; sugar is in way more stuff than you realize. While you’re in the process of cutting it, you might find yourself in relationship arguments or having struggles with your boss or children. This is the withdrawal; addictions are sneaky, and they know exactly what needs to happen to get you to break down and seek out a sugary treat.

6. Learn To Read Labels

Given that more people than ever are seeking out healthy foods, marketing companies are thriving on making food appear healthy that isn’t. Take the time to learn to read ingredient lists and sugar content breakdowns on labels. Research things you don’t recognize, and quickly you’ll discover the tricks marketers use. For instance, ascorbic acid is often listed as an ingredient that gives you vitamin C, but when you research it, you’ll discover that it’s only one component of whole-food vitamin C and doesn’t offer the same benefits.

The above information should help you embark on your health journey to lead a healthy life. As long as you’re open to learning and happy to take a bit longer in the grocery store, you’ll begin to reap some stellar rewards.

Sometimes we want to lose weight on a deadline as there is that ideal outfit or a special occasion, and we know the date. It could be as early as a week or a month, and we have a few kilos to lose. So our first instinct is to look online and try to follow the diet trend that is emerging at the top of the search. Sometimes we manage to lose a few kilos in a jiffy. But what happens next? The usual outcomes are nutritional deficiency, feeling exhausted, overeating and putting on all the weight lost. So rather than going for the fad and popular diets, can one do weight loss healthily? Read on to know more:

Fad Diets vs Healthy Eating

A study on 42 overweight and obese individuals revealed that rapid and slow weight loss improves lipid and glycemic profiles. It also helps body goals such as reducing waist circumference and hip size and appearing lean. However, shortening the time it takes to lose weight can decrease anticipation and prevent the anxiety of seeing slow results.

Many fads exist on the internet, in magazines, and pass-through word of mouth about rapid weight loss. A study by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2016 shows that more than 1.9 billion adults were overweight. Of these 1.9 billion people, more than 650 million people were obese. It explains the popularity of fad diets; people can grow distressed by slow weight loss, and hence they begin to try everything to lose weight. Often, these sources suggest dangerous diets such as the one-meal-a-day diet, 1000 calories diet, and coffee diet. Another study performed on 593 girls aged 9 to 20 years showed that girls who wished to be thinner were four times more susceptible to developing disturbed eating habits.

Healthy weight loss aims to lose weight and maintain the weight one arrives at. It also seeks to energise people, unlike the fad diets that induce exhaustion and deplete one of the essential nutrients. This article will explore healthy weight loss methods that will be easy on both the body and the mind.

Steps to Lose Weight on a Deadline

Set a Clear Goal

Having a clear goal or intention around your weight loss journey can help organise and plan one’s weight loss regime. In addition, it can help you track your progress and see how far you have come in your journey.

It is best to write down the weight you want to lose and in how many days you want to lose it. For example, you can write, “I will lose 10 kgs by the end of the next 2-3 months.” It also helps to stick this intention somewhere you can see it often. For example, you could stick it on the fridge, the wall above your desk, or even above your bed.

Being reminded of your intention often can help one be consistently motivated to lose weight each time they see their intention. Research shows that though obese individuals are less likely to set goals, setting targets increases their likelihood of losing clinically significant amounts of weight. It even showed that sometimes exaggerated targets improved their results.

Another study showed that setting goals, self-efficacy or self-motivation, and knowing the benefits of weight management can increase motivation for weight loss among obese people. This motivation can also improve by regular exercise.

Assess Your Ideal Calorie Intake

Once you have gathered the necessary drive to lose weight, it is time to develop a plan to lose weight. It starts with assessing how many calories we need to intake to be healthy. The daily ideal calorie intake changes based on age, the person’s metabolism and physical activity per day. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends consuming around 2000 calories per day for a person with healthy body weight.

It means that the calorie intake during the duration of the weight loss journey will be slowly getting closer to 2000 calories per day. However, this also means that the calorie intake per day during the diet may not be 2000 calories since we are still moving towards it.

Determine How Many Calories to Consume While Losing Weight

The number of calories to consume during weight loss depends on the weight loss goals of individuals. Certain people may want to “bulk up” or develop their musculature and lose fat. Essentially, in these cases, the overall weight tends to increase. However, they lose a significant amount of fat weight. The weight gained is from the developed muscles.

Others may not want to develop their muscle system. Instead, they may want to become lean. Unlike “bulking up,” it will decrease overall weight.

A calorie deficit diet can help people lose weight quickly. A calorie deficit diet is where one consumes fewer calories than the number of calories they use. For example, a study shows that people with a 600 kcal deficit diet experienced more weight loss than ones with a conventional low-calorie diet of 1200 calories.

The calories needed to lose weight is a calculation of your activities and goals. But, again, expert nutritionists can help identify this.

Incorporate Foods That Help Lose Weight Quickly

A study shows that low-carb diets are metabolically effective in short-term weight loss. However, it is not optimal for maintaining the weight long-term. As per a study, the Mediterranean diet is effective in weight loss. The Mediterranean diet is also suitable for health because it is a balanced diet with diverse micro-nutrients.

However, the study says that formula diets are most effective for rapid weight loss. Formula diets contain ingredients that do not need time for digestion. They readily absorb into the body. These diets are for short term use only and are for specific patients.

The study also emphasises eating high-quality carbohydrates and fats in a balanced diet for weight loss and preventing weight-related health risks.

Health risks that a balanced diet with high-quality carbohydrates and fats can prevent are:

Coronary heart disease

Diabetes

Cancer

Another study shows that fruits, vegetables, and dairy low in fat can help attain and maintain weight loss.

A diet composed of various fruits, vegetables, whole grains, high-quality proteins, carbohydrates, and fats is a healthy diet. To aid weight loss, one must also eliminate processed sugars, refined grains, and other processed foods. This type of diet is not only good for losing weight but also for maintaining their ideal weight.

Get Moving

Research shows that exercise can prevent gaining weight after one has lost weight. Hence, activity can put a stop to the yo-yoing effect. The yo-yoing effect refers to people gaining and losing weight perpetually in a cycle.

A report from the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that U.S. adults in 2013-2016 reported exercising and eating less food than before as weight loss methods.

Some forms of exercise that people can opt for in weight loss are:

Aerobics

Cardio training (swimming, biking, etc.)

Playing sports (tennis, basketball, etc.)

Dancing

Yoga

You Can Try Intermittent Fasting for Losing Weight

Intermittent fasting refers to an eating pattern where people switch between eating and fasting in a scheduled manner. Usually, people opt for 8 hours of eating and 16 hours of fasting in 24 hours. You can easily do it by eating from 11 am to 7 pm.

Research says that there is great promise in treating obesity when intermittent fasting is involved. Research also suggests that intermittent fasting is safe and can produce more than 5% weight loss. It can also improve many markers of metabolic health in obese individuals.

Encourage Yourself With Results and Rewards

It is essential to focus on your progress rather than how much weight is still left to lose. Many people get discouraged by calculating how much weight they need to lose. Instead, people can easily motivate themselves by tracking how much weight they have lost. This process can give them a sense of accomplishment and fulfilment. Rewarding also can be used to encourage oneself to complete the weight loss journey.

It is also essential to reward yourself for the progress you have made. It keeps the weight loss journey fun and provides an intensive way to lose weight. For example, some rewards for weight loss could be visiting a place you have always wanted to visit, gifting yourself something you have always wanted, or even an entire day of relaxation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q. What is a reasonable time frame to lose weight?

A. The CDC deems weight loss of 1 to 2 pounds per week a steady and reasonable speed of weight loss. However, this time frame can vary according to metabolism, diet, daily movement, and energy expenditure, among other factors.

Q. What is a reasonable time to lose 20lbs?

A. According to the CDC, a steady speed of weight loss is 1 to 2 pounds a week. Therefore, going by this standard, a reasonable time to lose 20 lbs would be 2 to 4 months.

Q. How can I slim down in 7 days?

A. Intermittent fasting combined with a calorie deficit diet can help one slim down in 7 days. To have a lean body, it is also essential to exercise. Exercising can tone your muscles, giving you a slimmer appearance.

Q. Will I lose weight if I stop eating for 3 days?

A. Starvation is not ideal for weight loss. Research links it to stunted bone growth, developmental delays, low bone mineral density, and decreased cortical strength. Another study links starvation to impaired cognitive abilities, spots in vision, prickling sensation in the hands or feet, desire for isolation, low sexual drive, and emotional imbalance.

Q. What are the stages of weight loss?

A. The stages of weight loss are glycogen depletion, dehydration, fat loss, plateau, and metabolic recovery. Glycogenic depletion is when the body uses the energy reserves in various fat-storing organs, such as the liver, after entering a calorie deficit. During the fat loss phase, people will notice significant weight loss. Plateau is when the weight loss stops. It is because the body has run out of stored energy. Finally, metabolic recovery is the phase where the body regains a proper energy balance. During this phase, one may notice slight weight gain. However, this is healthy and nothing to worry about.

Q. How long will it take to lose 30 pounds on a 1200 calorie diet?

A. The time it takes to lose weight on a particular amount of calories differs from person to person. For example, it would take one 3 to 6 months on average to lose 30 pounds on a 1200 calorie diet. It is based on CDC; one can lose 1 to 2 pounds per week on average.

Q. Where is the first place you lose weight on your body?

A. The body utilises fat stored in organs such as the liver and kidney. It is because these organs store visceral fat around them. Visceral fat or hard fat is the first fat layer under your skin. It is before soft fat. Soft fat is usually stored in the belly, thighs, and back.

Q. How far do you have to walk to lose 1 pound?

A. Research states that 1 pound equals 3500 calories. Usually, it takes walking 1 mile to burn 100 calories. Hence, it will take walking 35 miles to lose 1 pound.

Q. What Breakfast is Best for Weight loss?

A. A breakfast rich in probiotics that aid digestion can help weight loss. An excellent example of this is yoghurt. Oats are good for overweight people. Hence, oats with yoghurt are a good breakfast choice.

Q. Is working out 30 minutes a day enough to lose weight?

A. Thirty minutes of exercise per day is good for weight loss. As long as one exercises every day, they will significantly reduce weight. However, if one wants to exercise for less time while still losing weight, high-intensity workouts can come in handy.

Q. How can I reduce my stomach fat?

A. A consistent balanced and calorie deficit diet combined with exercise that targets the abdominal muscles can effectively reduce stomach fat. Exercises that target the stomach are crunches, running, swimming, and cycling.

A significant increase in blood volume, amniotic fluid, and a growing baby add to the mother’s total body weight. Women who are already overweight or suffering from obesity will eventually gain some weight during pregnancy. However, they can lose problematic body fat and get rid of weight-related complications via safe applied methods & naturally during pregnancy. They become nauseous or have food aversions and unintentionally start losing weight during pregnancy (especially at the early stages). Regardless, one should always share all the symptoms with the doctor or health care provider.

Opting for extreme diets during pregnancy to lose weight is not advisable. You should eat enough to provide the baby and yourself with sufficient nutrients. It is essential for your overall health. At the time of pregnancy, going on diets, cutting calories or restricting food groups can impact the development of the foetus and deprive the body of required nutrients. It is essential to learn the risk associated with being overweight and the risk involved in losing that weight through unsolicited methods.

Risks of Being Overweight During Pregnancy

Obesity during pregnancy links to poor health outcomes for both the mother and the child. A study claims that the probability of conception decreases, starting from a BMI of 29 kg/m2. The same study claims that a high body mass index also increases the chances of various other risks like:

High BP or blood pressure

A severe form of gestational blood pressure or preeclampsia

Gestational diabetes

Intrauterine death

Obstructive sleep apnea is a condition where you stop breathing for short periods during sleep.

Obstetricians watch blood pressure and blood sugar levels during pregnancy and lookout for signs of high blood pressure or gestational diabetes. Such women are given specific diets or exercise advice to mitigate such conditions to promote a healthy pregnancy & delivery.

Can you Safely Lose Weight when Pregnant?

Medical experts usually encourage women to eat enough nutrients and exercise daily to keep their babies healthy. In addition, most healthcare experts do not recommend pregnant women to follow a weight loss diet as it can increase complications for the baby. However, with more research and advancements, some healthcare experts believe that there are safe measures that one can take during pregnancy to lose or manage healthy body weight. Ideally, women should try to ward off the extra kilos before becoming pregnant to avoid unnecessary risks to their health and babies.

If the woman does not gain any weight during the pregnancy, she will start losing the fat stored. As a result, her body weight might reduce than before the pregnancy. If a woman loses weight during her first trimester of pregnancy, it is due to nausea or morning sickness. Severe morning sickness can also deprive the body of nutrients, and being on call with a doctor during the entire period is advisable. Weight gain is usually experienced by women during the second trimester when they slowly start to feel better.

Optimal Weight Gain Recommendations During Pregnancy

Women often meet with an obstetrician or their doctor to develop a care plan when they become pregnant. Your first visit will involve discussions regarding nutrition and physical activity. The weight gain guidelines will follow your starting weight as per your pregnancy. BMI may not be the perfect indicator of health, but according to the Institute of Medicine, there are different weight gain recommendations for women under different weights. Your BMI does not consider body composition, ethnicity, race, gender, or age. It is quite an incomplete measure but an easy method to analyse your potential health status and outcomes. It is pretty quick and hence holds value in the medical community. However, not all doctors follow BMI guidelines but use IMOM recommendations to guide women towards ideal weight goals.

Considering Weight Pre-Pregnancy

It would help if you considered your weight at the pre-pregnancy stage. Take guidance from the doctor or health care regarding shedding off any extra kilos or gaining an ideal weight to promote fertility & healthy pregnancy. People of all shapes & sizes can get pregnant, but as per studies, prematernal obesity can cause various complications. These complications include the risk of preeclampsia, preteen birth, and macrosomia, where the foetus is larger than the standard size. In addition, it can cause injury during childbirth. Therefore, one should consider positive, sustainable lifestyle changes to support a healthy weight and boost fertility.

Safe Ways to Manage Weight During Pregnancy

Eat Small Meals

Pregnant women should eat small but continuous meals throughout the day and keep snacking too but healthy. Ginger honey paste or ginger candies are said to ease nausea.

Avoid Fatty Foods

Morning sickness is a common symptom during pregnancy which increases because of deep-fried, heavy and oily food items.

Know Your Body Mass Index

If you want to make changes in your diet, you should keep track of your BMI or Body Mass Index. A normal BMI range is between 18.5 to 24.9, and thus it is advisable to not gain more than 10-12 kgs during your entire pregnancy. But if your BMI falls under 18, you should gain around 10-12 kgs. So weight gain should be 7-10 kgs with a BMI range between 25-29.9 and only 5-9 kgs if overweight.

Don’t Miss Your Dose of Vitamins, Minerals and Calcium

It is essential to consume your vitamins and iron or calcium supplements daily. It is crucial for the optimal growth and development of the baby. Also, please note that you do not combine iron and calcium for best absorption.

Exercise

If you unintentionally start losing weight during your pregnancy, you may feel weak and feel like staying away from physical activity. In that case, talk to your doctor. Then, once you get the go-ahead, start a gentle form of exercises like walking or prenatal yoga. It would help if you kept at physical activity to eliminate pregnancy woes and abnormal weight gain.

Be Aware

You should be conscious of what is happening to your body. A gradual weight loss during the first trimester is average, but a sudden loss of 4-5 kilos can be dangerous, and you should immediately reach out to your doctor.

Cut Down on Calories

Be mindful of the number of calories you consume to keep the extra kilos at bay for your baby to remain healthy. A pregnant woman should consume at least 1700 calories per day. You should keep track so that you do not exceed the count or go below it. Stay hydrated.

It is always a good thing and beneficial for the body to stay hydrated – pregnant or not pregnant. However, if you indulge in physical activity during pregnancy, you need to add a few extra glasses of water. Drinking 1-2 litres of water will keep you full and keep overeating at bay.

Eat Healthy Snacks and Stay Active

You already know that you should avoid junk food and fill your platter with fresh fruits and vegetables. Go for whole-grain cereals and bread & low-fat dairy products. Spinach, strawberries and beans are rich sources of folates, while high-fibre foods help in better digestion. It also prevents constipation which is a very natural occurrence during pregnancy.

It is also necessary to stay active and go for at least 30 minutes of mild physical activity on most days of the week. You can discuss it with your doctor to find out that it also has a lot of stress-relieving benefits. Ensure you consult your doctor once as not all kinds of pregnancies can accommodate physical exercise. It might be a problem if you weigh on a heavier scale. If recommended, you can go walking, swimming, cycling, plus low-intensity exercises. Avoid exercising on higher altitudes and let go of any forms of exercise that require you to lay flat on your back – as it affects the blood flow to the foetus.

Tips for Diet and Exercise During Pregnancy

It is a given that a balanced and nutritious diet with a well-planned exercise plan is the need of the hour during your pregnancy. Your healthcare professional team should provide you with optimum advice for taking care of your baby. A few tips for the same include:

Tips for Healthy Eating

Always opt for a balanced diet when pregnant, while watching your portion and meal size. It is a healthy practice if you are worried about your weight. One should not go on a crash diet. Consult your physician if you consume any supplements or medications for weight loss.

Do not fall for the age-old concept of eating for two, i.e. including the baby, as the baby is tiny during the first trimester. Instead, one should eat balanced meals.

It is advised not to skip any meals and frequently eat for adequate nutrition. Go for lean protein like fish and chicken along with seafood. In addition, your diet should comprise less processed foods and sugar.

Refined grains vs whole gains? Go for whole-grain wheat, millets, quinoa, rice etc. but not white, refined grains. Your vegetable intake should be more and hence, fill your plate with lots of it during mealtime.

A registered dietician will always give you the best advice. Avoid sugary food items like ice cream and candies but go for apples, peanut butter etc. and high fibre fruits like berries or pears. Keep your sugar intake in check.

Pregnancy Exercise Tips

Physical activity is good for the body during pregnancy. One should never adopt a sedentary lifestyle and not go for strenuous physical activity. Walking has always proven to be an excellent and easy way of weight maintenance, and even sedentary women can benefit from it. Pregnancy yoga classes or prenatal fitness programs are also preferable. Keep in mind to follow a light to a moderate exercise regime. It will also help to deal with labour and postpartum recovery. Do not push too hard and find your comfort level with physical activities. Your primary focus should be on staying healthy during pregnancy. Something is better than nothing – do not sit idle.

Distribution of Weight During Pregnancy

As per studies, the pregnancy weight gained gets fairly distributed where the baby weighs around 3 to 3.5 kilograms when the pregnancy ends. Also, the amniotic fluid and the placenta come up to 1.5 kgs. An additional 2 kgs are due to the enlarged uterus and breasts.

Body fluids & blood: 4 kgs.

Fat & other nutrients: 3 kgs.

Total weight gain is around 10-15 kilos.

Conclusion

Pregnancy is a phase where you should take good care of yourself for your baby’s well-being. Put in your best efforts to lose the extra weight if you are overweight but always try to do so by healthy means. Your pregnancy can prove to be a good time for you to look at your health positively. It should not have any adverse effects on your body. It is a time for you to practice self-care and be alert and physically active. A healthy diet and exercise can avoid complications like gestational diabetes or high BP. Make sure to maintain a healthy weight and support a healthy pregnancy.

Take the help from a nutritionist to plan a nutritious meal & snack routine for your health. If you are worried about your baby’s growth, you must know that your baby is too tiny to absorb nutrients in the first trimester. Your baby will only grow via your fat reserves.

The very first priority of your body is the nourishment of the baby. However, it can also happen that you cannot digest all of the food due to morning sickness or nausea. Thus, it is better to consult a doctor in such situations. Being mentally fit is also equally essential to get through the pregnancy. You should be happy and send positive vibes to your baby. Avoid stress as much as possible and stay active. Pregnancy can be the happiest time for you. Stay active and positive, have proper food and get plenty of rest, and it will be a breezy phase for you.

Research Restaurants. You won’t have total control over all the food on vacation, and that’s okay! You should enjoy yourself and explore new cuisine. However, to help you feel your best, take a look at the menu beforehand and see if there are any balanced choices you can make. For example, balanced meals with lean protein, high fiber starch and some fresh produce are excellent go-to options.

Add in High Quality Supplements. It can be difficult to meet nutrient needs while traveling and this is where supplements can come into play. I recommend a high quality multivitamin, vitamin C for immunity and probiotics for digestion/gut health.
One in five people struggles with mental health issues daily. People cope with their problems through various mechanisms. However, these mechanisms sometimes ignore the issue or merely treat the symptoms rather than the main cause, which can eventually make the problem worse. Mental health awareness has increased in the last decade as it is vital to improving society’s overall well-being.

People have become more accepting of discussing their mental health now that the social stigma surrounding it is dying down, and they don’t feel as vulnerable opening up to professionals, family, or friends as they might have once done. If you are looking for ways to fight mental health issues, here are some tips that will help you along the way.

Being Physically Active

Improving your mental well-being starts with being physically active. You don’t have to spend hours in the gym or exercise intensely to take care of your physical health, however. Find physical activities that you enjoy such as cycling, swimming, or walking, and keep doing them regularly as these activities raise your self-esteem, change your mood for the better, and help you set goals and achievements for yourself. You don’t have to spend money to be physically active either, so don’t stress yourself and explore different activities to find what you enjoy the most.

Talking About Your Feelings

It may sound obvious, but talking about feelings feels so difficult and awkward for everyone. Some people consider sharing their feelings as a sign of weakness, but that is far from the truth. Talking to someone about how you feel or relaying the intrusive thoughts that bother you is a way to improve your mental health; it will open you up to a plethora of support when you realize you’re not alone. You should talk to someone that you trust, whether that is a family member, a friend, or a professional mental health care provider. No matter how silly you think the feeling or thought is, talking about it is the first step to learning healthy coping mechanisms to overcome thoughts and fears that don’t serve you.

Seeking Help

Some mental health issues are overwhelming and can’t be handled alone, and it is essential to seek help to overcome or deal with these problems. While friends and family are excellent at giving support to ensure you feel loved, they are not equipped with the right knowledge and expertise to take the right approach. Scheduling an appointment with a psychiatrist can help you learn more about yourself. Here in Southern California, finding a reliable and quality mental health residence is more realistic than one might think, regardless of finances or health concerns. You can find affordable and reliable care around the clock. This way you can ascertain that you’ll receive the right amount of care and treatment. Joining local support groups is another great help to show you how others are coping with the same problems. If you feel overwhelmed or exhausted to the point you can no longer deal with your mental health problems on your own, seek assistance; you don’t have to endure this alone.

Being Nice To Yourself

It is extremely easy to judge, criticize, and be hard on ourselves, especially when we are feeling down. Being hard on yourself intensifies stress and anxiety and deteriorates your mental health. It is difficult to be nice to yourself when your mental health is suffering. That’s why you should learn how to be compassionate to yourself. When you’re feeling down, it can be hard to compliment or congratulate yourself for anything. In times like this, try to be patient with yourself, and understand that a little goes a long way. Doing something small that puts a smile on your face is a big step forward.

Doing Mental Health Exercises

If you think it’ll be overwhelming to share your feelings or seek help, you can start small by doing some simple mental health exercises. Small steps have a huge positive effect in the long run as long as you are persistent. Meditation is a great exercise that will improve your mental health over time by doing practices like slow breathing. Writing your feelings and thoughts in a journal takes the stress of them off your mind even if for a short while and will help you feel better. Another good mental health exercise is stretching, which can be done any time of the day, anywhere, and any number of times. Laughing, dancing, and listening to music can boost your mental health considerably and improve your mood. Pick a couple of mental health exercises and schedule them, but don’t overdo it or push yourself to do what you’re not in the mood for and stress yourself even more.

Mental health is an essential aspect of your overall health and it can negatively affect your body in the long run. Opening up and allowing feelings of vulnerability are difficult tasks that most people don’t know how to do. Learning how to cope with your mental health issues will promote a more sustainable and healthy lifestyle as you work on improving different aspects of your life. Don’t be harsh on yourself; we all make mistakes, so be compassionate and patient with yourself. If you feel like nothing has worked for you, so far, don’t fret! It is never late to seek professional help to improve the quality of your life.
