<p>Now, you may be tempted to grab one of those expensive protein bars instead of sitting down for a decent meal. But the effect isn&#8217;t the same. Not only are you getting a lot of extra sugar and chemicals, but you&#8217;re not getting the same fat-fighting effects. Studies show that your body burns more calories digesting whole foods than it does processed foods. In addition, lean meats are key sources of choline, which we already established is a nutrient that helps turn off the genetic triggers that lead to fatty liver—a new epidemic linked to visceral fat—and methionine and vitamin B12, which unplug genes linked to diabetes and weight gain.</p>

Add fruit to the chocolate to boost fermentation and the release of the compounds!</p>
<p>But make sure you&#8217;re choosing the right kind of chocolate: Look for a cacao content of 70% or above, and stay away from Dutch cocoa, as the Dutching process destroys up to 77% of the healthy compounds in chocolate.</p>

<p>&#8220;Eating yogurt is associated with <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4856732/">lower body weight, body fat and having a smaller waist</a>. Additionally, yogurt is a good source of good-for-your-gut probiotics, and having a <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7333005/">healthy gut microbiome is associated with less body fat</a>, abdominal fat included.&#8221;</p>

<p>Yawitz also recommends loading up on nuts to slim down. &#8220;<a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29113145/">Studies suggest</a> that people who eat more nuts weigh less and have less belly fat than those who don&#8217;t eat them as often. There&#8217;s some evidence that walnuts, especially, could help burn belly fat,&#8221; said Yawitz. &#8220;In two small studies, adults who ate walnuts every day had higher levels of a fat-burning hormone called adiponectin, which has been shown to decrease waist circumference <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4891796/">even when there&#8217;s no change in body weight</a>.&#8221;</p>

According to a review published in the <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4139846/" target="_blank"><em>International Journal of Molecular Sciences</em></a>, a polyphenol only found in unrefined extra virgin olive oil—oleocanthal—reduces inflammation in a similar way that ibuprofen does: it prevents the production of two pro-inflammatory enzymes, COX-1 and COX-2. Lower levels of inflammation on the inside of your body means less belly fat on the outside.</p>

And another study at <a href="https://www.acs.org/content/acs/en/pressroom/newsreleases/2014/march/the-precise-reason-for-the-health-benefits-of-dark-chocolate-mystery-solved.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Louisiana State University</a> found that gut microbes in our stomach ferment chocolate into heart-healthy, anti-inflammatory compounds that shut down genes linked to insulin resistance and inflammation. To enhance the effects, try pairing your chocolate with some apple slices: The fruit speeds up the fermentation process, leading to an even greater reduction in inflammation and weight.</p>

<p>As much as 92% of Americans eat a diet that&#8217;s deficient in vitamin E. And that trend seems highest among obese people, according to a study in the <a href="https://academic.oup.com/ajcn/article/87/2/362/4633366" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>American Journal of Clinical Nutrition</em></a>. Almonds are among the best dietary sources of vitamin E, packing about 20 milligrams per half cup, and are also high in monounsaturated fats and fiber, which is optimum for eliminating love handles.</p>

It&#8217;s also high in the amino acid lysine, which helps you burn fat and maintain healthy bones and skin. According to a study published in the journal <a href="https://europepmc.org/abstract/med/24128557" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>Food Chemistry</em></a>, quinoa has the highest level of betaine, a chemical that revs your metabolism and actually shuts down the genes that encourage love handles fat to hang around.</p>
