<p>Japanese mint weight-loss patches have become a popular option for people who are eager to find a relatively easy way to shed a few pounds. However, while it&#8217;s understandable why simply slapping a patch on your body would be an attractive option, they may not be effective, according to experts.</p>
<p><em><a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://parade.com/1296356/kaitlin-vogel/japanese-mint-weight-loss-patch/">Parade</a></em> recently took a look at the patches that claim to use Japanese mint as an active ingredient, noting that the plant that&#8217;s also known as <em>mentha canadensis</em> comes from both North America and Asia. According to <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://www.webmd.com/vitamins/ai/ingredientmono-616/japanese-mint">WebMD</a>, it&#8217;s actually the oil in the mint that&#8217;s extracted and used for various conditions, including gas, indigestion, and gallstones, as well as for common colds, fever, and joint pain.</p>
<p>When it comes to using Japanese mint in weight-loss patches, <em>Parade</em> explains that they&#8217;re &#8220;intended to absorb transdermally&#8221; which &#8220;allows the active ingredients (in this case, the Japanese mint) to go directly into the skin without going through your digestive system.&#8221;</p>

<p>But the question is: Is it effective as a weight-loss method?</p>
<p>&#8220;Mint has some amazing benefits. One of these is its ability to stimulate digestive enzymes and boost metabolism and a faster metabolism can help with weight loss,&#8221; Clara Lawson, RDN, who works with <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://usahemp.com/">USA Hemp</a>, tells <em>Eat This, Not That!</em></p>
<p>However, when it comes to the patches, Lawson explained, &#8220;If you aren&#8217;t bringing any healthy change into your diet and lifestyle, you aren&#8217;t going to lose weight with these patches.&#8221;</p>
<p>Lawson also notes that there is &#8220;no evidence in regards to their effectiveness… and they aren&#8217;t even regulated by the FDA, so they are not a legitimate weight-loss method.&#8221;</p>
<p>That&#8217;s certainly not the only potential problem with these patches. &#8220;Ultimately, my issue isn&#8217;t with the mint; it&#8217;s with the carrier they use (herbs are bound with a chemical that drives into the skin),&#8221; <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://hayliepomroy.com/">Haylie Pomroy</a>, a top Hollywood nutritionist and founder of the Haylie Pomroy Group, who was one of the experts that spoke to <em>Parade</em>, warned in a statement provided to <em>Eat This, Not That!</em></p>
<p>&#8220;It can be scary because some companies use the same carriers as fentanyl patches. Look at who is making it and where it&#8217;s manufactured. Ninety-nine percent of these companies aren&#8217;t disclosing their carrier.&#8221;</p>
<p>Pomroy adds: &#8220;The only benefit we&#8217;ve seen through research with transdermal applications like these are for B vitamin transdermal or sex hormones, like testosterone or estrogen patches. Again, the issue is the carrier with all of these other patches.&#8221;</p>

<p>Trying to find the best way to lose weight can be an elusive goal to achieve. Between following trendy diets (remember the grapefruit diet?), sipping on chalky &#8220;weight loss&#8221; shakes instead of eating meals, and exercising like a frantic person, there seem to be a million and one ways that people are promised will help them lose some pounds. But unfortunately, most diets end up failing and people do not see their weight loss journey being successful long-term.</p>
<p>Thankfully, a new study was published in the <em><a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" href="https://academic.oup.com/ajcn/advance-article/doi/10.1093/ajcn/nqab270/6369073" target="_blank">American Journal of Clinical Nutrition</a></em> that highlights exactly what the best method for weight loss is, according to science. According to this study, you can lose weight by limiting heavily processed carbohydrates and focusing on options that contain nutrients like fiber, protein, and healthy fats. In other words, <strong>you don&#8217;t have to eat less food—you just have to eat higher-quality food</strong>.</p>
<h2>Quality vs. quantity</h2>

<p>When people are trying to lose weight, intuitively, they try and eat fewer calories than what they burn. Attaining a calorie deficit has been the long withstanding recommendation for attainable weight loss for many years. But since the obesity rates continue to trend up, our traditional weight loss advice is clearly not working.</p>
<p>Understanding how the &#8220;calories-in-calories-out&#8221; model doesn&#8217;t seem to be the best way to manage a healthy weight, a recently published study that was co-authored by experts from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health highlighted that <strong>people need to focus more on which foods they are eating instead of how much food they are eating if they want to see the results that they are hoping for</strong>.</p>
<p>Generally speaking, eating low-fiber, low-protein, highly refined carbohydrates (like corn flakes, candy, and white bread) stimulates a hormonal response that leads to more fat deposits in the body. Too, an increased feeling of hunger and a slower metabolism can be seen over the course of this process.</p>

<p>So, people do not appear to gain weight simply because they are eating too many calories. According to this study, people gain weight because they eat too many foods that cause certain hormones in the body to either become stimulated or inhibited, inevitably leading to the accumulation of too much fat, a change in hunger, and a slower metabolism. <p>Americans have been looking for the secret to weight loss for many years, and according to this new research, we may have found our magic bullet.</p>
<p>According to this study, if people limit heavily processed carbohydrates and focus on options that contain nutrients like fiber, protein, and healthy fats, they may see better weight loss outcomes vs. the traditional methods that have simply not worked in the past.</p>

<p>Enjoying foods like meats, nuts, legumes, bran flakes, berries, apples, pears, and a wide variety of vegetables can help you maintain your blood sugar levels, and therefore, help you manage a healthy weight.</p>

In fact, options like <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19169946/" target="_blank">long-grain rice, easy-cook long-grain rice, white basmati rice</a>, and <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5884373/" target="_blank">white boiled</a> pasta are considered to have a lower glycemic index, meaning that eating them causes a slower and smaller rise in blood sugars vs. other foods. Foods that should be limited include white bread, refined sugar, cakes, candies, soda, potato chips, crackers made with refined flour, and donuts.</p>

<p>Of course, focusing on lifestyle habits like prioritizing quality sleep, managing stress, and participating in physical activity are all important for living a healthy lifestyle too.</p>

<p>Most nutrition and medical professionals might suggest that lifestyle changes like a leaner diet and more exercise can be the healthiest way to lose weight. In other cases, for individuals who need to take the bariatric surgery route to shed pounds, authors of a new study recommend that patients should be consciously proactive about when they have the procedure done.</p>

<p>At this week&#8217;s Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, lead author <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/929490">Hannes Beiglböck, M.D.</a> from the Medical University of Vienna in Austria, presented findings from a recent review of 10 years&#8217; worth of studies that included over 19,000 bariatric surgery patients.</p>
<p>As a press release states, Beiglböck&#8217;s study concluded: &#8220;Men who undergo bariatric (obesity) surgery are five times as likely to die within 30 days of the procedure compared to women, and their long-term mortality is almost three times higher.&#8221;</p>
<p><a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://www.studyfinds.org/men-risk-dying-weight-loss-surgery/"><em>Study Finds</em></a> suggests this is due to the fact that men wait until they&#8217;re older to seek the surgery. The source explains that in many cases, by the time they do, they already have cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol, or Type 2 diabetes, which may contribute to this higher death rate among men.</p>
<p>Women, on the other hand, &#8220;seem more willing to look at surgical weight loss earlier in life, whereas men tend to wait until they have more comorbidities,&#8221; Beiglböck said. (Psychiatric disorders were also a comorbidity for both genders, while for women, cancers were 9% more prevalent among women who expired after surgery.)</p>
<p>We should note that this study doesn&#8217;t necessarily call for total alarmism over bariatric surgery, as it can indeed be helpful for many patients. To be specific, the researchers cited hopeful insights based on the data they reviewed: &#8220;Between January 2010 and April 2020, less than 2% of bariatric surgery patients died,&#8221; they reported.</p>
