<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Almost everyone will admit they have areas or habits in their lives they feel can be better than they are at the moment. Some people may feel they can be more kind and compassionate, others feel they can be more assertive, and others feel they can be more peaceful and happy.</span><span id="more-54389"/></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For me, a few years ago, I felt I could be less angry and explosive. I was short-tempered and would often result in very cruel words which I didn’t think through well or just simply be violent. And this was not something I enjoyed at all. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I tried a couple of anger management techniques to see if they could help but they were barely helpful. When I almost gave up on this character improvement project, it’s when I discovered mindfulness and went on to work with it to overcome this problem.</span></p>
<p><strong>A Clear Breakdown of How I Used Mindfulness to Conquer Anger</strong></p>
<h2><strong>Step 1. Research about mindfulness and get to know it</strong></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Although I had a rough idea of awareness, I decided to do deep research on it so that I would have concrete detailed information on the practice. I used reliable sources of information online for learning about mindfulness which are credible and authoritative in the self-improvement industry. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I also read books, visited self-help websites, watched videos, and listened to podcasts on mindfulness. </span></p>
<h2><strong>Step 2. Figure out an approach plan and where to start </strong></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">After my research, I tried to figure out how I could apply it practically in my life. I had learned that mindfulness meditation was a form of training in mindfulness so I only found it natural to begin mindfulness by training myself through meditation.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">My approach plan was to start with the meditation practice and later on try out other mindfulness techniques to increase my moments of mindfulness and increase its effects in my life.</span></p>
<h2><strong>Step 3. Get started with mindfulness meditation immediately</strong></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">After having a vision and a plan of how to approach things, I made the effort of beginning the meditation practice right away. I used guided meditation resources for mindfulness meditation to help me learn how to do the meditation practice and also have a feel of what mindfulness is like. I began meditating for 5 minutes and slowly increased the duration as I got comfortable. This is an important step because most people don’t take it. They never get started at all.</span></p>
<h2><strong>Step 4. Aim to get better with every meditation session</strong></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">After a couple of meditation sessions, I noticed that, since I was still a beginner, I was making a lot of mistakes which included feeling weighed down by the practice and feeling like it was too much work to do, just to name a few. So I researched more about the problems from people who have experienced the same in the past, found effective solutions for them, and began applying them as I aimed to make some improvements in every session. Online meditation communities and forums helped me find the solutions to my meditation problems.</span></p>

<h2><strong>Step 5. Reflect and visualize about solving the problem you have</strong></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">My goal was to control my anger to the point where it couldn’t affect me even when I was told anything that might trigger negative reactions. I desired to be told something that felt insulting and not even flinch. So I would reflect every so often on how I wanted my life to be. I would think about the specific problems that are brought by the anger and I would try to look for solutions. And then I would visualize myself applying those solutions in the needed areas. I would consciously tell my mind that the visualized solution is exactly how I’m going to be doing things in my life going forward. Doing that helped me remember to be aware of myself when such times came and made applying the solutions much easier since I had already established in my mind, through visualization, exactly how I wanted things to be.</span></p>
<h2><strong>Step 6. Put in personal effort consistently to apply the solution</strong></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Now applying the solution every time isn’t easy. The first few times might be a bit easy but making them stick and become your second nature is quite hard. What I found to help with the issue of consistency and habit creation is that you have to view the solution like a new habit you’re going to form that’s going to stick with you forever. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">So when you apply it the first few times successfully, you should still remind yourself that it’s what you’re going to do again when you’re in the same situation in the near future. I reminded myself and followed it up with physical effort. If I came across anything I knew might make me angry, I would try to be aware of myself and my emotions and then remind myself what I decided to be doing, and then I would act upon it immediately. Sometimes, I would choose to walk away, and other times I would keep quiet and discipline myself to not speak at all.</span></p>
<h2><strong>Step 7. Aim to be aware of yourself</strong></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Based on my personal experiences, I have learned that being always aware of yourself, not just when you want to solve a problem in your life, but every other moment really helps. Awareness helps you not get into that problem in the first place so that you avoid having to solve it after it has already affected your life. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">However, being always aware is pretty hard and needs a lot of work. I achieved it by doing mindfulness meditation daily for 10 to 20 minutes to start with.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I also worked with mindful listening and speaking when I was having conversations with other people, mindful working when working, mindful walking when commuting to work or generally any time I was walking, mindful eating during my meal times, and mindful showering when taking a bath. Ideally, taking any chance you get to be aware and fully maximize it. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">However, before I got to use these other mindfulness techniques, I only worked with mindfulness meditation and visualization to be aware of myself when trouble came and then used the other mindfulness techniques to be always aware of myself.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Moreover, I’d take my time in the evenings to review how my day was and how I did with regard to calming down my anger. And I’d visualize how I would approach the next day when I had the same anger problems. I’d take different versions of scenarios that would get me angry and see myself handling them much better without being lost in emotions. Doing this helped me remember automatically how to behave when I got into such situations.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To achieve all that I was dedicated, committed, disciplined, and focused on making a permanent change. Eventually, it worked!</span></p>

<p>One of the most common habits that make life miserable is to not be where you are.</p>
<p>What do I mean by that?</p>
<p>That your body is right here, right now. But that your thoughts are elsewhere in time and space.</p>
<p>They are in the past, reliving an old, painful memory. Or replaying an argument – that you still want to win – for the hundredth time.</p>
<p>Or your thoughts are in a possible future. Worried and stressed about what may happen at work or in your relationship. Or trying to plan for every possible scenario and through that hoping to fully control the future.</p>
<p>And the more time you spend in the future or past, the more you – in my experience – tend to also:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Be ineffective.</strong> Making decisions becomes very hard if you second-guess yourself all the time or become paralyzed by all the possible outcomes. And overthinking zaps so much energy that you lose motivation to take action.</li>
<li><strong>Miss life as it happens.</strong> If you are not fully here in this moment then it is very easy to miss and to not fully enjoy a victory or simply a beautiful, fun or small moment in life.</li>
</ul>
<p>Maybe you cannot spend all of your time in the now. Because there are things you can learn from reexamining your past. And there are things you sometimes need to plan for in your future.</p>
<p>But the kind of obsessive or addictive way to spend so much time in a regular week in the past or future can be replaced with something smarter, more helpful and happiness-friendly.</p>
<p>Three habits that have helped me a lot to make that shift into being much more mindful are to:</p>
<p><strong>1. Slow down.</strong></p>
<p>Start your day with doing whatever you do first in your morning slowly.</p>
<p>This will make it easier and more natural to keep a slower pace and to focus fully on what you are doing for the rest of your morning.</p>
<p>And starting your day in this way will often prevent you from going into your own most common thought loops that cause worry, anger or sadness.</p>
<p>Plus, doing something in a calm and relaxed manner is often the quickest way to do something well.</p>
<p>And you can of course slow down what you are doing at any time during your day to get your mind back to what your body is doing.</p>
<p><strong>2. Tell yourself: Now I am…</strong></p>
<p>I often tell myself this silently in my mind: Now I am X.</p>
<p>And X could be that I am brushing my teeth. Doing the dishes. Taking a walk and listening to the sounds around me.</p>
<p>Just reminding myself of this helps my mind to stop wandering and it brings my focus back to just that one thing I am doing right now and nothing else.</p>
<p><strong>3. Disrupt your thoughts + quickly reconnect with the here and now.</strong></p>
<p>If you are a regular reader then you know that I like to use a stop-word or phrase to <a href="https://premium.positivityblog.com/self-esteem-course/">silence the inner critic</a>.</p>
<p>This works well for getting back to the present moment too.</p>
<p>When you catch yourself going somewhere else in the past or future with your thoughts then – in your mind – shout: STOP!</p>
<p>Or: No, no, no, we are not going down that road again!</p>
<p>Then, right away after you have disrupted those thoughts find your way back to the present moment by either focusing only on what is going on around you right now with all your senses – the sights, the sounds, the smells and so on – or by focusing 100% on your breaths going in and out of your body.</p>
<p>Do either of those things for just 1-2 minutes.</p>

<p>The term “lovingkindness” has long been a staple within the spiritual community, with experts like Jack Kornfield basing their life’s work on teaching it’s power to the masses. Especially in the last decade, the concept of mindfulness as a whole has surged in popularity; even our youngest generations are learning emotional intelligence &amp; self-acceptance at a speed unlike ever before.</p>
<p>After I was taught the concept of lovingkindness – which, in a nutshell, means to allow things to be as they are and accept them as they come – I was fascinated by it’s simple yet powerful message. As I sunk deeper into its teachings and started applying it to my own life, I began to wonder: can you really cultivate a better relationship with the world around you just by changing your perspective?</p>
<p>As someone who has dealt with everything from cystic acne to <a href="https://inthemirra.com/blogs/news/eczema-with-skincare?_pos=1&amp;_sid=2d97b7d70&amp;_ss=r">severe eczema</a>, I’ve had my fair share of low self-esteem moments. By applying the teachings of mindfulness and lovingkindness to all facets of my life, though, I’ve been able to bring back a new, improved type of healing that I, truthfully, never knew I needed – even when it comes to my skincare ritual.</p>
<p>Looking for ways to improve your relationship with your skin? Tired of feeling frustrated and defeated when you look in the mirror, despite how many expensive oils and treatments you lather on? It might be time to cultivate a healthier relationship with your skin and start accepting what you can’t control (aka, everything). Here’s a few quick ways to apply the concepts of mindfulness and lovingkindness to your ritual and start loving yourself 100%.</p>

<p>The way we speak to ourselves really does make a difference in our overall wellbeing. After all, if you’re spending all your time hating your skin and critiquing every “flaw”, you probably aren’t going to feel very good about it, are you? <p>The next time you see something you don’t like, refrain from being critical of it right away. Instead, find something kind to say to yourself in that moment. Although it seems small, even one moment of kindness towards yourself can plant the seed of self-love, which only blooms the more you do it. Give it a go for a week and see how you feel after.</p>

<p>Even if you can’t slow down the majority of your life, you can carve out a few extra minutes to give your skin the attention it’s craving from you, especially if it’s irritated or inflamed. Even if your skin mood isn’t ideal, taking your time applying each cream and lotion is an act of self-love in itself. Appreciate the feeling of every product – what does it feel like to apply your moisturizer? How does your skin react to your nightly oil?</p>
<p>Bringing mindfulness to your ritual is a way to press pause on the hectic hamster wheel of life and gives you a chance to truly relish in the luxury of taking care of your body with intention. Most importantly, taking a break from the constant go-go-go of life is important to managing stress, a major contributing factor in angry skin moods.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #33cccc;">Find Your Moment Of Zen </span></h3>
<p>Even if you slow your ritual down, you can still feel distracted or otherwise occupied while going through the motions – and that’s ok. Part of mindfulness is observing your thoughts and feelings as they occur, but not attaching yourself to or judging them.</p>
<p>If your skincare ritual feels too involved and you can’t relax while you do it, there’s other opportunities to practice lovingkindness and mindfulness that are beneficial. Love a good mask moment? Why not put one on for 15-20 minutes and sit with your thoughts while it works it’s magic?</p>
<p>If you’re familiar with the practice of meditation, you can use this time to do so – apps like Headspace make it easy to fit meditation into whatever pocket of time you have. If meditation isn’t your jam, though, no pressure –  you can simply sit in a quiet, calm place and observe your thoughts as they come. Be sure to notice your breath and be intentional with each inhale and exhale, as well.</p>

<p>Try setting aside 5 minutes after you complete your skincare ritual to check in and write about your feelings towards skin. It doesn’t matter what you say or how you say it, so don’t get stuck in the minutiae – the important thing is to lay it all out and observe your thoughts afterward. What patterns do you notice? How do you feel after re-reading your own words?</p>
<p>Whether it’s adding extra “me” time or logging your perception, you may be surprised at what you notice when you’re intentional with your actions and incorporate the art of mindfulness into your skincare ritual.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400">While mindfulness seems to have its roots in Buddhism, its branches have spread across the world. The reason is simple – our world is in chaos. We all are confused, albeit at varying degrees. We are constantly stressed by the very busyness of life. We are always tense and in a rush. We are either fearful of the uncertain future or regretful of the unalterable past.</span><span id="more-53418"></span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">We spend the years ignoring the moments, don’t we? Where does the solution to this modern-day epidemic lie? In some coveted book? Or in some scientific drug? Well, it lies in the ancient art of mindfulness. This art is a practice that does teach us certain important lessons. Here are six of those.</span></p>
<h2><strong>1. Your Peace Begins With You</strong></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">The ancient Stoics were among the strongest-willed humans to grace the face of this planet. The most popular among them happened to be Marcus Aurelius, the last of the five good Roman emperors. Sources tell us that these set of mortals were unfazed in the face of adversity. They could maintain incredible peace and equanimity despite the worst of challenges. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">History abounds with such individuals who could maintain their mental peace irrespective of the outwardly conditions. When one studies their lives, it becomes evident that the roots to their calmness lie in mindfulness. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">They were never too anxious about the distant future, and neither were they resentful of their pasts. They were aware of the present moment and battled challenges as they arrived. Their practice of mindfulness brought them more awareness of their thoughts. The power to choose your thoughts is a modern-day superpower. The realization – that you have the power to choose your thoughts if only you are mindful of them – could pave the path to mental peace.</span></p>
<h2><b>2. Your Perspectives Color The World </b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">George Bernard Shaw said, “You are the window through which you see the world.” You see the world not as it is, but as you are, don’t you? Happy people see the world as a happy place. Individuals with violent tendencies tend to view violence as a way of the world. Becoming a happier, better, calmer person is the key to making the world the same. How you see matters. And how can you get to know of the way you see the world? Mindfulness. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Focusing on the present moment allows you to look inwards. It forces you to question your perspectives. It pushes you to alter your inner self for the better. As your inner self and your perspectives improve, so does the outer world.</span></p>
<h2><b>3. A Still Mind Can Accomplish More</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Did you ever find yourself in the middle of an important project where your mind ended up darting in a dozen different directions? Well, how long did you take to finish the assignment? You know the answer. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Striving to live in the present moment forces you to focus on nothing else but the task at hand. It channelizes your mental energies in one direction. This way, you tend to accomplish a lot more in much less time. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">You live in a world that is constantly vying for your attention. Your distraction is the most priced currency of this </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400">attention economy</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400">. The result? We see more and more people working harder and longer but with little to show for.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Being aware of our moment-to-moment choices and habits is the only way to a better future. Your life, until now, is an accumulation of an innumerable number of present moments. What you do from this moment onwards, in the present, will alone decide where you end up in the future. One must be aware of their habits to acknowledge them as being good or bad. That is the first step to improving upon good habits or changing bad habits.</span></p>
<h2><b>5. You Are More Creative Than You Think </b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Did you ever spend hours wrestling a problem in vain, only to find the solution come out of nowhere when you shifted your focus to something else? We often get anxious about the future repercussions while attempting to find a solution to a problem – and this blocks our creative energies. But mindfulness allows us to look at a problem objectively, enabling us to find a better solution. Mindfulness empowers you to think differently and figure out different ways to overcome a particular challenge. It keeps you from fretting about something bad that may or may not happen in the future.</span></p>
<h2><b>6. Self-Acceptance Is Critical </b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">While the desire to improve is important, it must never involve excess self-criticism. Most of us tend to compare ourselves with others and develop feelings of inferiority, which invariably thrust brakes on our betterment. Mindfulness allows you to focus on your strengths, which helps boost your self-esteem and a sense of self-worth. When you feel better about yourself and love yourself, you are more likely to focus on yourself and improve as a human being.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Mindfulness is a lifelong pursuit. It can promote your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. While the path is not easy, it definitely is worth it. The journey will teach you a lot of life lessons that could prove transformational. You can start with consciously practicing mindfulness for five minutes a day before you gradually increase the duration. With consistency, you should be able to live the life of your dreams.</span></p>
