When your mind is filled with constant thoughts of dread and anxiety, all aspects of your life suffer, including your appetite.

Anxiety and stress are natural parts of everyone’s lives, but negative feelings can emerge when dealing with adversity and uncertainty daily. Even if you find it hard to believe, your body is supposed to feel anxiety and stress because they are ways to tell your brain that possible threats are at hand. However, when your system is on a continuous danger alert, and several physiological processes activate, your body puts you into survival mode, and your appetite suffers changes.

You most likely heard about stress eating, but people also often experience the opposite state. You can be so anxious and stressed that you could not eat. Your mental health and appetite are connected in a number of ways, and if you want to stimulate your appetite, you need to understand those connections – a lot is happening in your mind.

The Connection Between Anxiety And Appetite Loss

Appetite is your body’s desire to consume food. However, it would help if you didn’t confuse it for hunger, which is your body’s response to not getting the necessary energy intake. When you’re calm and relaxed, the interaction between your brain’s satiety and feeding sections triggers your appetite. The feeding center is active non-stop, telling your body when to nourish. However, the signals from the satiety area of your brain can offset its effects after you eat food. It takes very little to throw the systems out of sync. Any factor that over-activates the feeding control system can trigger an increase or loss of appetite. Stress and anxiety often influence your appetite in one of the ways.

Anxiety is often accompanied by stress and therefore, your body falls victim to stress hormones and their effects. Stress hormones are essential for the body because they turn on the survival mode. However, they might misinterpret the signals and put your body in the survival state even when it’s unnecessary, speeding up your heart rate and stimulating your intestinal system. Studies show that stress hormones can cause changes in your digestive system, triggering appetite suppression because your brain tells your body that it’s in a dangerous situation, and the last thing it needs is food in the belly. However, stress and anxiety don’t always suppress your appetite; they can also disinhibit it and make you overeat. When stressed out and overwhelmed, you may experience appetite surges, like cravings for sweet and fatty foods.

Overeating Vs. Appetite Loss

If you’re persistently overwhelmed, stressed out and anxious, you’re more prone to have long-term heightened levels of CRF hormones and experience a prolonged loss of appetite. On the other hand, if you’re dealing with these mental health issues less frequently, you’re more likely to seek comfort in food and overeat. Don’t be too hard on yourself because each individual responds differently to stress and anxiety, whether short-term or chronic. In fact, even the same individual might react differently to high and mild anxiety. Severe anxiety may trigger a loss of appetite, while mild stress might make you overeat. Studies also show that men and women react to stress and anxiety differently when it comes to food consumption and meal choices. It seems that women tend to eat more calories when stressed out. Also, women with a higher BMI show increased levels of anxiety.

If you deal with a loss of appetite due to your mental health, it’s crucial to take the necessary steps to address the problem.

Can Delta 8 THC Stimulate Appetite?

Now that you know the lack of appetite is a common issue among individuals suffering from stress and anxiety, let’s discuss the available solutions. One of the most common is Cannabis and its derivatives. Research is limited on the subject, but so far, it looks like delta-8 THC can improve low appetite. However, before you shop Delta 8 THC Vape Carts, research the market to find more about the product and its benefits because it might help you with more than stimulating your appetite.

What Is Delta-8 THC?

It’s impossible to determine if delta-8 can improve your state before you gain knowledge about the subject. So before using it to stimulate your appetite, learn about the product. You’re probably familiar with the term Cannabis or marijuana. Delta-8 is a compound extracted from the cannabis Sativa plant that improves your health state and provides several benefits. Delta-8 is similar to delta-9 but has less intense psychotic effects because it’s made from CBD or hemp flowers. Similarly, to the other cannabinoids, it has neuroprotective properties, anti-anxiety properties, appetite-stimulating properties, analgesic properties, and anxiolytic effects.

Those who previously used delta-8 state that they feel like munching something after because the product stimulates the appetite. Studies show that munchies is a term often associated with what you feel after you use cannabis products. So, when you consume delta-8, you might experience a desire to eat and, therefore, an appetite increase. Delta-8’s effects on your endocannabinoid system also impact your appetite because when it interacts with your CB1 receptors, you experience an augmented sensory response to odors and smells and, therefore, an increased appreciation of beverages and foods.

Using delta-8 is often described as an uplifting and pleasant experience; hence it might alleviate your stress and anxiety. Cannabis products are known for bringing a sense of peacefulness and relief. You might even experience a floating feeling, like the weight on your shoulders has been lifted. However, we should mention that the effects differ from one individual to another, and you should try various products to see which one better helps with your symptoms. The quality of the product is also essential.

If you want to improve your mental health and stimulate your appetite, delta-8 can help. Cannabis and its related products are quite versatile and bring improvements to countless conditions.

Being interrupted is among the most frustrating communication experiences.

It is important to let others finish their thoughts completely unless you have something urgent to say.

Interrupting expresses a lack of interest or respect and stops people from sharing the end of their story.

Realizing you have an issue is a long way from a solution, but it’s a good start.

It provides you with an opportunity to learn how to stop interrupting and modify your behavior in able to better connect with others.

Is Interrupting Someone Disrespectful?

Except for a few circumstances, when you interrupt others that are talking, you come across as disrespectful.

Whether you do it consciously or not, most people will feel as if they are being disrespected when they are not allowed to finish what they are saying.

You prevent the person speaking from making their point, delivering their punchline, or finishing their story.

You ask a question that the speaker would have eventually answered.

Interrupting implies that you believe your words are more worthwhile than what the other person has to say.

Interrupting makes people feel tense and anxious when they speak to you.

It makes you appear egotistical, as if you believe the other person is inferior.

How to Stop Interrupting People: 11 Strategies to End the Behavior

Connecting and communicating well starts with considering the other person’s perspective.

Waiting until a person has finished what they have to say before you add to the conversation makes it clear that you are listening and not simply waiting for your turn to talk.

1. Slow Down

If you usually ramble with urgency to say what you’re thinking, try to slow the pace of the conversation. People interrupting seems to occur more when the conversation is rushed.

Speak slowly and take pauses to keep the conversation at a comfortable pace, allowing everyone involved to have their say.

While long silences that last for several seconds can be a little uncomfortable, slowing down as you speak and allowing brief pauses will help everyone take turns talking more naturally.

Listen Deeply

Be fully present and attentive as the other person speaks. Instead of just hearing the words as you wait your turn to talk, give the speaker your full attention.

In most cases, the courtesy will be repaid when it is your turn to speak. When everyone feels heard, the conversation is much more enjoyable for all.

Focus completely on the person talking. Pay attention to their body language and listen to the meaning behind their words. It is also good to nod, smile, and make eye contact to assure them you are giving your full attention.

3. Fight the Urge

As you learn to interrupt less often, you’ll notice during some conversations that you get a strong urge to interrupt.

Learning to recognize these urges without acting on them is vital to breaking the habit.

Bite your tongue and pull back when the urge to interrupt hits you unless it is vital to speak at that moment. Recognize the urge in your body and take slow, deep breaths until it passes; then count to five before you speak.

The more you do this, the weaker such urges will become in the future.

4. Wait for a Pause

The main thing to remember is not to talk when someone else is talking. Instead, wait for a short silence or pause in the conversation to prevent overlapping conversation.

Some examples would be waiting until someone finishes telling their story, asks for questions at the end of a meeting, or finishes making a point. Wait at least two seconds after the person stops talking before you reply to allow them to gather their thoughts.

5. Ask to Speak

You may need to ask for a turn to talk in some situations. The specific situation will dictate how you should do this.

For example, in a formal group setting, you may need to raise your hand and wait until you are acknowledged before speaking.

You could also make eye contact with the speaker to make them aware that you have something that you want to say.

Ask if it is okay for you to make a comment or share an announcement.

6. Pay Attention to Conversational Cues

Keeping an eye out for conversational cues can help you determine when talking is okay during a conversation.

A common way to detect your turn to talk is impending is when the speaker starts to slow down, indicating that they are running out of things to say and encouraging you to pick up the conversation.

Another signal is a momentary pause when they stop to think of what to say next or give you a window to speak.

There are also many non-verbal indicators that it is your time to talk. For example, the other person raises an eyebrow when they look at you or changes their body language to a more closed position.

7. Make Your Words Count

For some people, it can be difficult to know when it is inappropriate to talk. Challenge yourself to say what you want to say while using fewer words.

Make every word count and limit the time you speak before someone else has a turn. For example, set a goal to not say any more than three sentences before asking a question, pausing, or trying to include other people in the conversation.

When you use fewer words to express yourself, it helps to create additional space in the conversation, makings it possible for others to have a turn to talk.

8. Write Down What You Want to Say

Sometimes you will feel that you may forget what you want to say if you do not interrupt.

In these situations, it will be helpful to have a notebook to write down key points so you do not forget essential ideas to add to the conversation when it’s your turn to speak.

If you plan to be in a formal setting, it is a good idea to take the time to write down a few points that you want to address ahead of time.

This way, you will have a list of things you want to say without being pressured to speak at the wrong time.

9. Encourage the Other Person to Speak More

The best conversations include a good balance between listening and talking. Be mindful of the amount that you are talking.

If you feel you are doing most of the talking, try to get the other person to contribute more to the conversation.

There are a few natural ways to encourage people to talk more, like asking open-ended questions, honing in on the topics that interest them, and being friendly and warm to help them feel more comfortable.

10. Be Sure to Stay on Topic

Changing topics during the conversation can be a form of interruption, even if you are not talking over anyone.

People may become offended if you cut off a conversation, change the subject, or move quickly to a new topic of discussion.

If you change the subject during a conversation with a lack of transaction or connection to the topic you were just discussing, it can make the person you are talking to feel as though you are ignoring them.

Use phrases like “speaking of…” or “that reminds me” to suggest that the conversation reminded you of something related. To avoid making other people feel as though you are interrupting, change topics in a deliberate, gradual, and slow way.

11. Acknowledge and Apologize

While a conversation with no interrupting would be ideal, there will be times when you simply cannot help but interrupt when someone else is talking.

In this instance, you can quickly recover simply by acknowledging that you spoke out of turn and apologizing to the other people involved in the conversation.

When you are actively participating in a conversation with another person, you may need to speak up even if they have not yet completed their thought.

Perhaps you realize that you have missed something central to the conversation. Or, by the time they finish talking, the conversation topic may change.

In this case, you would start with an apology for the interruption and then go on to say what it is you need to say.

Why Do I Keep Interrupting Others?

Usually, interrupting a conversation is not meant to be insulting. It’s actually quite the opposite.

Interrupting shows that you are actively engaged in the conversation and want to contribute.

Recognizing that interrupting is not serving you or the other person well is the first step toward changing rude behavior.

Once you understand why you keep interrupting others, you will be well on your way to becoming a better communicator.

Thought Process: Some people interrupt because it’s the way that they process and interpret information. We process thoughts much faster than we form words. All too often, we discover a solution, come to a conclusion, or find inspiration before the other person has finished expressing themselves.

Short-Term Memory: We feel as though if we do not get our thoughts into words fast enough, we will lose them.

Personality: Certain personalities have a natural tendency to interrupt. These people are usually outgoing, great conversationalists that are comfortable in a variety of social situations.

Lack of Self-Awareness: Some people simply do not realize they are interrupting others.

Desire to Belong: You want to be included in the conversation, but when you try, someone else speaks or is monopolizing the conversation.

It all begins with the way that you think. Be respectful toward the other person because they deserve to be heard as much as they listen.

When everyone involved in the conversation is respectful, the dynamics completely change.

However, some are more effective than others. Indeed, according to new research, your best bet might be to opt for a vegan diet that doesn’t focus on restricting calories but does include a fair share of legumes.

A study by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine that was recently published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics involved 244 participants who were all considered to be overweight. While some kept to their normal diets, others were asked to switch over to a low-fat vegan diet that didn’t require restricting calories.

After four months, those who stuck with a vegan diet dropped 13 pounds on average while participants who specifically consumed plenty of legumes lost weight and fat mass as well as visceral adipose tissue.

“Our research shows that the best way to improve the quality of your health is to improve the quality of the foods you eat,” noted study co-author Hana Kahleova, MD, PhD, director of clinical research at the Physicians Committee, according to EurekAlert!. “That means avoiding animal products and eating a vegan diet rich in fruits, vegetables, grains, and beans.”

When it comes to why a vegan diet is so effective, Dana Ellis Hunnes, PhD, MPH, RD senior clinical dietitian at UCLA medical center, assistant professor at UCLA Fielding school of public health, tells Eat This, Not That!, “It focuses (when it’s a whole food vegan diet) on unprocessed foods that are high in fiber, vitamins, minerals, plant proteins, and water content. This type of diet is very filling and satiating, so you don’t realize you’re eating fewer calories.”6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

On top of that, Hunnes says “these foods are anti-inflammatory, lower in calories, and help regulate hormones,” which “is good for health and weight loss.”

As for legumes, Hunnes explains that “they are incredibly high in fiber and protein which makes them very filling.” Beyond that, they also “raise your body temperature during digestion (the thermic effect of food), so you burn more calories to digest them.”

If the old adage is true, with age comes wisdom, then people who live the longest are among the best resources to ask just about anything. From lifestyle to mental health to work and overall outlook, lived experience can help make anyone an expert, in time.

Luckily, research has been done on how to track down these wise, well-aged people and glean their life advice. The Blue Zones Project, led by founder Dan Buettner, identified the five places in the world where people live the longest: Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; Nicoya, Costa Rica; Ikaria, Greece, and Loma Linda, California. Then, he and his team studied these communities and took note of the wide array of life advice we have to learn from them.

That advice, of course, includes knowledge about how to eat for optimal health. While Blue Zone communities have a lot in common in terms of eating habits, the number one practice they share is simple: they are all largely plant-based.

The longest-living people largely eat a plant-based diet.

“People in the Blue Zones eat an impressive variety of garden vegetables when they are in season, and then they pickle or dry the surplus to enjoy during the off-season,” says the project. “The best-of-the-best longevity foods are leafy greens such as spinach, kale, beet and turnip tops, chard, and collards. Combined with seasonal fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and beans dominate Blue Zones meals all year long.”

These long-livers do eat meat, but only as a small side, very sparingly. Instead, protein comes from beans, nuts, seeds, and greens—all foods that can support weight loss.

The link between a plant-based diet and weight loss.

A plant-based diet has already been proven to help with weight loss by a myriad of other studies; perhaps the amount of evidence out there that correlates plants with lower body weight is to blame for our current cultural shift towards meat alternatives.

As far back as 2010, a study showed that meat consumption was associated with weight gain, even if other healthy weight loss techniques were employed. Then, in 2018, a comprehensive review of several studies showed that plant-based diets were correlated with better overall health—including more successful attempts at weight loss. As recently as 2020, another study was published linking a plant-based diet with weight loss.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

We’ve known for a while now that plants are the answer, at least, according to the research. But thanks to the Blue Zones Project, we can feel confident that the idea is based on something beyond academic research: it’s affirmed by the wisdom of the world’s longest-living people.

Losing weight is never easy. From changing up your diet to adding in exercise, it can require making swaps and sacrifices. And one area that tends to be troublesome when it comes to ditching weight is the belly. (Here are 9 foods to avoid if you want to lose belly fat.) That fat that accumulates there, also known as visceral fat, may be stubborn—but not impossible to lose.

And these seven women all successfully lost belly fat and weight naturally. Here are 12 of their tips to help you, too.

Shutterstock

“PLAN! Always have a plan. Since the very start of my journey every Sunday I still sit down and plan all my dinners for the week with my shopping list. I even pre-track meals so I know how many points I have to work with before dinner. If we are having a night of eating out I check out the menu before I go and plan my meal out. I’m not afraid to bring my own items to the restaurant.”

“PREP! I stock my fridge and pantry with foods that I know will fuel and fill my body. I try to not let myself get too hungry, but I’m a busy mom and sometimes I don’t listen to my hunger queues and before I know it I’m starving. By keeping items on hand that I know fit my budget helps to not binge.”

“SWAP! I have learned to take the foods I enjoy and love and ‘tweak’ the recipe to make sure it fits my plan for the day. Some of this includes swapping out pre-made pizza dough for 2-ingredient dough (equal parts self rising flour with 0% plain Greek yogurt) Using whole grains bread over white. Chickpea pasta over regular pastas.”

“Cut out fast food, fried food, and alcohol. Remember, nutrition is key. And we can’t outwork a bad diet.”

“Drink a minimum of 1 gallon a day. The more the better!”

“Be cautious of dressing and sauces. They carry more calories and fats than you think. Go for sugar-free options.”

“Make sure you workout 4 times a week, incorporating cardio and core.”

“My #1 tip is substituting processed carbs/high sugar foods with more protein-enriched whole foods. If I ever got a craving for cake (high calorie, high sugar, high fat), I’d sub it with a homemade protein pancake. It was richer in nutrition, lower in sugar/fat/cals, and it satisfied my cravings for cake.” – Connie Chan

“My best tip for losing belly fat is to be in a consistent calorie deficit! You don’t even have to exercise if you don’t want to. But being in a calorie deficit will shed belly fat!” – Jasmine May

Shutterstock

“My number one tip would be to not be afraid of fruit! I spent years avoiding fruit because it was programmed in my brain as being bad for me and to avoid it because of the sugar and carbs. It’s nature’s candy and delicious! Don’t be afraid of it, have it and enjoy it at least twice a day!” – Jennifer Douglas6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

“Eat your vegetables. In my personal experience, I ate the vegetables on my plate first. Having more nutrient-dense foods (such as having veggies or mixed green salads with lunch & dinner) really helped me feel more satisfied. It’s super easy to eat a family-size bag of cheese puffs, but really difficult to eat 5 helpings of broccoli.” – Chloe Campos

Shutterstock

“My #1 best tip to successfully lose belly fat is: so long soda! I would realize that after drinking sodas, my stomach would bloat like nobody’s business. Plus, it was loaded with sugar. Now, I mostly drink water, tea, or non-carbonated drinks.” – Christina Spencer

In this post I’d like to share the best cutting people off quotes to help you live a happier life.

Because the daily and weekly environment that you spend your life in will have a big effect on how you think, feel and – as an extension of that – the actions you take or do not take.

The books you read, podcasts you listen to, videos you watch and the people you spend your days with do have a big influence on you and the direction you’re heading.

So consciously create the environment that you want to live in that will lift you up and support you.

To do that you may – from time to time – have to find ways to spend less time with some people or to not spend any time with one or a few negative people that drag you down or hold you back.

I hope this post will inspire you and help you with that sometimes tough process.

And if you want even more self-loving inspiration then check out this post with you are enough quotes and this one filled with quotes from Brené Brown.

By now, you’ve probably heard that intermittent fasting (IF) is a popular way to lose weight. However, any diet—especially one that involves fasting for extended periods of time—can have varying side effects, which brings up the question: is intermittent fasting safe for everyone? We spoke with LA-based nutritionist Patricia Bannan, MS, RDN; healthy cooking expert Cedrina Calder, MD; and registered dietitian Cynthia Sass, MPH, RDN, CSSD to find out which people shouldn’t try intermittent fasting because of varying health reasons.

But first, Bannan explains exactly how IF is a good method for losing weight. “Intermittent fasting causes glucose (sugar) concentrations to decrease and lipolysis (fatty acid oxidation) to increase significantly during the first 24 hours, which helps the body break down stored fat.” In other words, IF works to blast fat and fast. While it’s effective, it’s definitely not for everyone.

Here are 11 types of people who shouldn’t try the intermittent fasting diet. Plus, don’t miss these Eating Habits to Lose Abdominal Fat As You Age, Say Dietitians.

Shutterstock

Receiving adequate sleep each night is crucial for healing and repairing muscles from exercise, supporting brain function, and even maintaining emotional well-being. Going to bed hungry can make it challenging for the body to relax and fall asleep, as this causes your brain to be alert, and, as a result, your body feels restless. Sass weighs in: “I’ve had clients struggle with falling asleep or staying asleep if the end of their IF eating window is too early in the day. Inadequate sleep carries a number of health risks, and sleep is when your body does a lot of healing and repair work.”

Not to mention that when you haven’t eaten in several hours, your blood sugar levels naturally drop, which can cause you to abruptly wake up in the middle of the night, feeling anxious. Disruptions during sleep can be harmful to your health, especially when they occur during the most pivotal stage of sleep, known as the rapid eye movement (REM) cycle. This stage is important for retaining information that you learned during the day and storing it into memory, and it repeats several times throughout the course of your sleep. Of course, not having enough sleep can cause other complications to arise, in addition to not being able to remember things.

“Too little sleep can also interfere with weight management and can pose a safety risk, in terms of cognitive function and driving,” says Sass. In this case, IF isn’t helping you lose weight, it’s one of the 27 Weight Loss Habits That Are Actually Making You Gain Weight.

According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, “Disordered eating is used to describe a range of irregular eating behaviors that may or may not warrant a diagnosis of a specific eating disorder.” Disordered eating is described as a descriptive phrase rather than a diagnosis. However, if irregular eating patterns and habits are not addressed, it can turn into an eating disorder such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or binge eating. Sass says that intermittent fasting may not be a wise choice for anyone that has experienced either disordered eating or an eating disorder.

“Any strategy that encourages restriction can trigger a disordered pattern in people with this history. For anyone, but particularly for someone with this history, it’s so important to listen to your body, and be mindful of what allows you to feel well both physically and emotionally. If limiting your eating window doesn’t support this, it’s not the right path for you,” she says.

As one would likely assume, attempting to do intermittent fasting while engaging in an intense training cycle is not an ideal—or safe—combination. If you’re training for a marathon or regularly do CrossFit, you may want to reconsider doing IF. Oftentimes, you will need to eat something before you exercise to help you power through your workout. It’s also extremely important to eat something after you’ve finished exercising, too. “During a hard workout, you will put little tears in your muscle and deplete your glycogen stores,” says Kacie Vavrek, RD a sports medicine registered dietitian at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. “A recovery meal within 1-2 hours plus regular meals every 3-4 hours after will help to replace glycogen stores and repair and rebuild muscle throughout the day.” Vavrek says skipping this post-workout meal could prolong your recovery and even inhibit essential muscle-building and repair.

Similarly, if you’re trying to gain muscle, Sass says it’s important that you consume protein at different times throughout the whole day, rather than trying to jam-pack it all into a specific eating window. In fact, many experts say that your body cannot properly metabolize more than 30-35 grams of protein per sitting. As a result, any excess protein that’s consumed and not utilized (ex: working out, weight lifting) during the day typically stores as fat in the body, not muscle.

“Spreading protein throughout the day and eating a protein-rich snack about one hour before bed” are two research-based strategies that will help you achieve the best muscle-building results. “Narrowing your eating window to just eight hours counters this approach,” Sass adds.

Shutterstock

As if digestion issues weren’t cumbersome enough to deal with on their own, adding a wonky eating schedule into the mix can only cause more gastrointestinal distress. “If you already have problems with digestion (e.g. IBS), intermittent fasting may worsen your symptoms,” Calder says.

IF can even spur digestive issues due to the prolonged fasting bouts. “Periods of fasting can disrupt the normal activities of the digestive system, causing constipation, indigestion, and bloating,” she says.

Bannan also says that eating large meals—which is often required for the types of IF that call for a long fast—can cause gastrointestinal stress. “This is particularly concerning for people with IBS, who already have a more sensitive gut,” she explains.

Shutterstock

Food provides sustenance and energy, and it enables you to focus. When you’re extremely hungry, all you can think about is food, which diverts your attention away from immediate tasks at hand. Of course, everyone responds to IF differently—it’s dependent on the person—but know that it may initially hinder your ability to concentrate if you’re not already used to going long periods of time without eating.

“Although some people report increases in energy with intermittent fasting, others may experience fatigue, reduced concentration, and low energy levels,” says Calder. “This can affect your productivity in your daily work. If you have the type of career or engage in activities where energy and concentration are needed, intermittent fasting may not be right for you.”

Shutterstock

People who live with diabetes already deal with frequent spikes and drops in blood sugar throughout the day, so the last thing they need is to heighten those blood glucose responses via fasting. This is especially concerning for those who have type 1 diabetes, because the pancreas cannot produce insulin—the hormone that takes sugar from the bloodstream and transfers it to various cells in the body such as muscle tissue, adipose (fat) tissue, and even your liver. People who have type 1 diabetes often need to take insulin injections so that they can eat food without going into a state of hyperglycemia, in which there is too much sugar in the bloodstream.

“If you’re a diabetic and currently on medications for diabetes, especially insulin, you should never do intermittent fasting without consulting with a doctor first and being monitored closely,” says Calder. “Intermittent fasting combined with diabetes medications can cause your blood sugar to get dangerously low.”

Calder even says that anyone who experiences issues with low blood sugar should avoid partaking in IF because it’s critical for them to consume food periodically to maintain adequate blood sugar levels.

Shutterstock

Engaging in IF while pregnant or breastfeeding can pose a threat to a child’s development. Calder says, “Pregnancy and breastfeeding require adequate intake of calories for proper development of the baby and milk production. Periods of fasting will interfere with your caloric intake, so pregnant and breastfeeding women should not do intermittent fasting.”

If you’re trying to get pregnant, IF may also not be the diet of choice for you. Bannan points out that IF may also be linked to fertility issues, causing changes in menstruation, disruptions in metabolism, and even prompting early menopause in women.

Shutterstock

There are some medications that must be taken in the presence of food because without it, they can make you feel nauseated or light-headed, among many other side effects. IF fasting periods could even affect people who take a handful of vitamins or supplements every day. For example, those who have a low iron count in their blood or have anemia may have to take a daily iron supplement (or several) to help restore iron levels. Iron supplements are notorious for causing nausea, and taking it with food can help suppress that feeling. The time at which you take an iron supplement may be flexible, but what if you’re on a medication that must be taken at a very specific time of day and with food? That’s when things get a little sticky, and ultimately, it’s just not a good idea to dive into this diet if it doesn’t work with your medication.

Shutterstock

Those who have recently experienced a major illness or are currently facing one should not engage in IF without clearing it with a doctor first. Here’s why: “In most cases, adequate caloric intake is needed in order to maintain lean body mass and a healthy immune system, which is necessary for individuals with cancer or weakened immune systems,” says Calder. “These individuals should speak with a doctor before trying intermittent fasting.” To bolster your immune response, consider skipping IF and adding these 11 Healthy Habits to Make Your Immune System Stronger to your routine.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

Shutterstock

Your work schedule can greatly influence your ability to engage in IF successfully. For example, if you work the night shift and have to sleep during the day, but one of your eating periods falls within the daytime, what do you do? Or worse, what if the majority of your fast occurs while you’re hard at work. Or, what if you work different shifts each day and never have a consistent schedule? Bannan says that fasting intervals can make you feel cold and experience headaches and mood swings. Having to cope with all of those potential side effects could distract you from work and make you less productive.

Shutterstock

It takes a lot of mental strength to commit to IF. “It takes a lot of willpower to go for extended periods of time without food,” says Calder. “If you’re not mentally ready to do this, you could potentially develop an unhealthy relationship with food. Fasting periods may cause you to obsess over food, leading to overeating and bingeing during non-fasting periods.” Instead of adhering to a strict IF diet, try these 11 Mindfulness Hacks to Eat Less, According to Experts to cut back on calories.

Although losing weight can be a challenge, many people find that the toughest aspect of weight loss is preventing those pounds from creeping back. According to one meta-analysis, more than half of lost weight is regained within two years, and by five years, that number zooms up to 80%.

So, what are those who are successful in keeping the weight off doing right? A new study in the journal Obesity reveals their top strategies.

Researchers surveyed more than 6,000 participants in a weight-loss program WW who had lost more than 50 pounds and kept it off for over three years. Answering questions about their motivations and tactics, these were the most cited tips. Keep reading to find out how to keep those extra pounds off, then check out Eating Habits to Lose Abdominal Fat As You Age, Say Dietitians.

Shutterstock

Perseverance was the biggest theme in the survey responses, and also a key method for dealing with inevitable setbacks, according to lead researcher Suzanne Phelan, PhD, in the department of kinesiology and public health at California Polytechnic State University. By having a long-term view, it was much easier to restart quickly instead of giving up the effort to maintain control over consumption levels, she says.

Shutterstock

For nearly everyone who was successful in maintaining their weight loss, tracking food had become a daily habit, even after hitting their “goal weight.” One maintainer advised, “You have to get up every day and make a choice to track and eat right. This is a lifestyle change, not a diet.”6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

iStock

Another notable strategy is not to think about weight at all as a primary motivator. Weight loss maintainers noted that the most important changes were “non-scale victories” like reduced pain, better control of chronic medical conditions, feeling a greater sense of confidence as well as more ease in their bodies, and having more consistent energy and lighter moods.

Shutterstock

As one maintainer noted, “Think of changing your eating habits as part of creating a healthy lifestyle.” That means weight loss comes as a result, or even a side effect, of that shift instead of being the main focus in itself. That also helps you pivot toward other healthy changes that have been shown to improve weight loss maintenance, like daily activity, quality sleep, and reduced stress.

Have you ever wondered how your best friend can handle a job, two kids and still manage to go to the gym each day? Some people just seem like they have superpowers, right? Regardless of the activity, these types of people always seem to be on top of their game , whether they are handling tasks at the office, taking the kids to their after-school activities, or picking the perfect gifts for grandma ahead of her upcoming milestone. Instead of wasting your time thinking about how other people do it, start changing your daily habits with ones which will keep you on your path and motivate you in reaching your goals. Here are our favourite tips to help you hack life and boost your productivity.

1. Create A Morning Ritual

If you ever followed very successful and productive people, you know that they swear by having an efficient morning ritual. From the time they wake up to the way they drink their coffee, successful people always have everything planned out each day, as a way of saving time. Their morning rituals usually include meditation, working out and getting dressed in an outfit that is well put-together, yet comfortable. From earrings down to socks, everything is carefully selected – most probably the previous night.

2. Wake Up Early

This might be an obvious one, but waking up early is not only about getting more things done in one day. It’s about getting good quality and restful sleep every night. Besides being healing and recharging, a restful sleep will help you wake up early in the morning and keep your body and mind sharp. Instead of waiting until your eyes are closing, start unwinding and switching off early in the evening, so you can fully disconnect before bed.

3. Practice Self-Care And Mindfulness

Living a balanced life means taking the necessary time to preserve and enhance your greatest asset, which is yourself. This means creating time for self-renewal each day in the four main aspects of your life: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Besides being a great way of alleviating stress, focusing on just being present can help keep you aligned with your objectives.

4. Start The Day With The Hardest Task First

Taking on the most difficult or frustrating task first thing in the morning may sound daunting, but it’s a tactic that highly productive people use each day. Instead of spending all day dreading the moment you will actually have to tackle that undesirable task, start your morning with the hardest jobs first. By eliminating the worst thing from your list, the rest of the day will seem easy in comparison.

5. Write Down Your Thoughts

Before you start reading your emails or checking your social media, make sure you take the time to gather your thoughts and plan out your day. From daily tasks to creative ideas and feelings, writing things down is the best way to stay focused and combat forgetfulness. Instead of stressing out all day about everything, develop the habit of adding several notes daily to help improve your productivity and keep you organized.

6. Learn To Say ‘No’

Productive people are not afraid of saying ‘no’, as they understand the value of their own time. After all, time is our most precious resource. If you are serious about stepping up your productivity game, you should keep in mind what your priorities and goals are. Try not to say “yes” to things that don’t contribute to your objectives, as you will end up wasting your time and resources.

7. Go On A Walk Each Day

Sometimes, all you need to do to become more productive is to change your setting. Whether you are spending your whole day at the office or at home, changing your surroundings can help clear out your mind. Studies show that physical movement can lower stress levels and boost your mood by releasing endorphins. A quick daily walk in nature can help improve brain function, while keeping you fit and active.

Practicing martial arts can help improve one’s health. Martial arts is a great way to get in shape, lose weight and improve flexibility. It also helps improve coordination and balance, and can even help protect against injuries. So, how exactly can martial arts improve your health and overall wellbeing?

Increased Flexibility

Practicing martial arts will help improve the range of motion in your joints. In fact, practicing karate and Jiu-Jitsu can help increase joint flexion and extension more than general fitness training. This increased flexion and extension can help improve joint stability, as well as reduce any pain felt during exercise.

It may even protect the joints from further damage later on in life. So, to increase flexibility, you need to work and improve yourself, which is why using BJJ instructionals can come in handy. In some cases, this improved flexibility can also lead to injury prevention or reduced injury risk by making movements safer for practitioners. For example, increased knee flexion from practicing some forms of martial arts like Taekwondo can make it less likely for someone to sprain their knee.

Increased Muscle Strength And Endurance

Many martial arts require a specific amount of strength and endurance. For example, practicing Jiu-Jitsu or Muay Thai will help develop your leg muscles – the quads, hamstrings, and calf muscles – which can be helpful in many exercises that require increased lower body stability. It is also a very active sport that requires one to have a certain level of physical fitness just to maintain performance levels. So if you’re looking for a form of exercise that will increase muscle strength and endurance, consider starting your own martial arts training routine! This way you’ll get higher energy levels from being more fit as well as improve coordination and balance by learning new movements.

Improved Mental Health & Fitness

There are many forms of martial arts that can help improve mental wellness. For example, practicing yoga and meditation has been shown to boost the immune system and fight stress and depression by increasing endorphins in the body. Martial arts like Judo and Jiu-Jitsu will teach you how to handle competitive situations while Karate or Kung Fu involves a high level of self-discipline which can help keep stress levels down. And unlike regular exercise, martial arts also make people sweat which means your body will get rid of any excess toxins through perspiration (exercise alone only helps ease tension).

Increased Energy

Last but not least, because martial arts is such an engaging activity to participate in, it gives you increased energy throughout the day! You’ll feel more invigorated and ready to take on the day because you’ll be getting an incredible workout that releases endorphins in your body. You might find yourself wanting to go back to class each time, just so you can get that artistic outlet. So if you’re looking for a way to boost endurance, mental health, muscle strength, and overall fitness levels, consider taking up martial arts as part of your regular wellness routine. Also, if you’re already active, practicing martial arts will help balance your routine by adding more strength and stamina training to the mix.

Better Balance And Coordination

Many forms of martial arts, such as Tae Kwon Do and Kung Fu, involve the use of weapons. This means practitioners need to have good balance and coordination to safely handle their equipment without hurting themselves or anyone around them. Even if you learn a martial art that doesn’t require weapons, it will still help improve your overall balance and coordination. It is an extremely active type of exercise that requires a high level of concentration and attention to detail – all things which can be useful for those who are trying to improve their focus habits. So no matter what kind of martial arts you take up as your preferred form of exercise, it will help increase both balance and coordination for a healthy body.

Decreased Injuries

Some martial arts forms, like Taekwondo, involve the use of kicks which can be very hard on your shins. But practicing these skills will actually help improve balance and coordination which will lower your chances of injury. It’s possible to become so skilled at kicking that you can remove shin pads during practice because you’re able to pinpoint where you should land your kicks for maximum safety. This means it can provide you with increased power but without putting too much pressure on the joints or increasing the risk of sprains or fractures, decreasing your chances of broken bones or torn ligaments.

So how can practicing martial arts help people lead healthier lives? By practicing martial arts, people can better their physical well-being by gaining flexibility, increasing energy levels, and improving stamina. Having these benefits can create lasting life changes for those who practice regularly.
