Whether positive or negative, your thoughts are powerful and meaningful.

If you believe and tell yourself you can’t or shouldn’t, then you won’t.

Fortunately, the opposite is also true.

Great things happen if you believe and affirm that you’re capable and worthy.

As James Allen profoundly said, “You are today where your thoughts have brought you; you will be tomorrow where your thoughts take you.”

These examples of personal mantras can help you cultivate positivity and success in your life.

What Is a Personal Mantra?

Let’s first define what a personal mantra is.

Personal mantras are powerful, positive statements that you can incorporate into your daily routine to focus your thoughts on what you want to accomplish and on who and how you want to be in your life.

You can use them in many areas of your life, including your:

Mental and emotional health

Physical health

Relationships with friends, family, yourself, and even strangers

Work or school

Financial matters

You can have just one mantra or as many as you wish. It’s up to you!

When used consistently and repetitively, personal mantras allow you to:

Cut through your negative mental chatter. Your mind is programmed to focus on the negative, but you can use mantras to become more present, focus on what’s going well, and attain inner peace.

Stay resilient during difficult times of stress. Use them to shift your mindset, attitude, and perspective positively. Sure, bad things happen. But you can control how you respond.

Work towards your goals and dreams more effectively and efficiently. Mantras inspire and motivate you to focus your intentions. They remind you that you deserve good things and are capable of success, whatever that looks like for you.

Visualize success and create confidence in yourself. Mantras help you focus on what’s important and what will move you forward. You can use them to push through a difficult task, a bad mood, or something you simply don’t feel like doing.

How Do I Make a Mantra for Myself?

So how do you turn your life around? How do you get and do the things you want?

Start by taking some time to think about what you want and don’t want, whether in one or two areas or around your life as a whole.

Consider who you are, who you want to be, and the things holding you back. Write it down if you can.

Then use the following tips for creating a mantra that works:

It must be BELIEVABLE. Your brain knows when you’re lying to yourself. Telling yourself something you don’t believe is pointless and can actually make you feel worse. If you’re unhappy, for example, saying “I am happy” has little effect no matter how many times you repeat it. Reframing your mantra to something like “I deserve to be happy” opens your eyes to the possibility of becoming happy.

Make it personal. Cookie-cutter statements have less effect than those that speak to you deeply. Personal mantras often begin with “I” or “my” (although that’s not always the case) and apply directly to your life and the way YOU want to live. Include the qualities you value but have doubts about. A few examples are courage, strength, patience, and persistence.

Specificity is key. Your mantra should focus on small actions that can lead to great success rather than on the big picture. Doing so makes it seem less daunting and more doable. Also, when you focus on getting the little things right, you’re more motivated to keep going.

Make it memorable. Use a short mantra that is easy to remember, generally 5-15 words, so that you can state it repeatedly.

Frame it positively. The best mantras empower you. Avoid negative statements like “I will not give up” and opt for more positive ones such as “I keep moving toward my goals even when things get hard.”

101 Personal Mantra Examples to Guide Your Life

While you should adopt personal mantras, there’s no need to reinvent the wheel. There are plenty to choose from, whether from everyday people or those well-known.

The key is to choose those that speak to you, adapting them where necessary to fit your situation.

Derek Sivers said, “Don’t be on your deathbed someday having squandered your one chance at life, full of regret because you pursued little distractions instead of big dreams.”

Those big dreams are what Paulo Coelho called “Personal Legends” in The Alchemist. It’s comparable to your life purpose.

When you live your Personal Legend, you tend to experience synchronicities, live life in flow and are well on your way to self-actualization. That’s the path to soul-level fulfillment.

Deep down, every human longs for a sense of purpose and meaning in life. The problem is that we often seek those in the wrong places. Fulfillment doesn’t come from grandiose accomplishments, prestige, or doing what others expect of us; it comes from living our Personal Legends.

When we ignore the inner call to pursue that particular path, we go through life with a nagging feeling that something is missing. We also risk ending up with regrets in the future. However, that’s totally avoidable; there’s still time to pursue your Personal Legend.

Here’s how you can do it.

1. Follow the Breadcrumbs

To live your Personal Legend, you must follow your heart—your heart-centered dreams and desires. Those are the things that make you feel alive, inspired, excited, and energized and that spark curiosity within you.

Too many people discard their dreams because they’ve convinced themselves that they aren’t “reasonable.” But your heart-centered desires aren’t just childish fantasies; they are breadcrumbs guiding you to your most authentic and fulfilling life.

Plus, as Paulo Coelho wrote, “You will never be able to escape from your heart, so it’s better to listen to what it has to say.”

2. Don’t Fall for the Ego’s “Wants” or the “Shoulds” of Society

One of the main difficulties in living our Personal Legends is differentiating our heart’s desires from the “wants” of our egos or the “shoulds” of conditioning.

The ego’s “wants” are rooted in fear, need, and feelings of lack. For example, when I was a teenager, I dreamed of becoming a famous actress and living in Hollywood. I was doing theater and enjoyed acting, but wanting to be famous wasn’t a heart-centered desire; it was just my ego. My ego craved recognition and praise. It wanted to feel important.

As for the desires that come from conditioning, those are the things our education and society taught us we “should” do. For example, I went to university because I was told growing up that intelligent people get college degrees (which, of course, is untrue). I wasn’t particularly excited about going to university, and it ended up being a waste of time and money.

To differentiate your heart-centered dreams and desires from those of your ego or conditioning, write down what you want. Next, for each thing, write down why you want it. Ask yourself “why” five times to go deeper. Then, look at the reasons you want each item on your list. Is it to receive praise, obtain a certain social status, or feel superior to others? That’s the ego. Is it because you were told it’s what you should do? That’s conditioning. Is it because it makes you feel alive, vibrant, and inspired? That’s your heart.

3. Commit to Pursuing Your Personal Legend

Pursuing our Personal Legends requires commitment, even devotion. If we keep putting our dreams on the back burner, we’re not committed and probably won’t achieve them.

To commit to your dreams, you can start by writing them down and reading them daily. You can also create a vision board and even visualize them. Most importantly, make room for them in your life. If you feel curious about salsa dancing, take a class. If you love animals, why not volunteer at a shelter once a week? If you feel drawn to deserts, plan a trip to visit one.

My mom has always felt drawn to deserts. She asked for a travel book with beautiful images of deserts around the world for Christmas, collects silk scarfs, and has photos of Northern Africa all over her office’s wall. But she never went on a trip to see one with her own eyes. “It’s too complicated,” she’d explain. “It’s too far.” A portion of her Personal Legend will die within her, and it’s a bit sad.

4. Rely On Your Inner Knowing

Perhaps you’ve heard the saying, “The quickest way to kill a dream is to tell a small-minded person about it.” Until you’re entirely confident in your ability to make your dream come true, it’s best to keep it to yourself or, at least, only share it with those you know will support you.

Especially don’t share your dream just to seek validation. When you seek validation, you aren’t entirely confident in yourself, and it’s in those moments that your vision is the most at risk of being crushed by “small-minded people” or people who don’t understand what you’re trying to accomplish.

Plus, no one knows what your Personal Legend is better than you, so their opinion should hold very little value. Learn to trust your own inner knowing and not rely on external validation.

5. Feel the Fear and Go for It Anyway

Paulo Coelho wrote in The Alchemist, “Don’t give in to your fears. If you do, you won’t be able to follow your heart. […] There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.”

When you set out to live your Personal Legend, you inevitably encounter resistance—fears, doubts, and insecurities—that can sabotage your progress and success. That’s because living your Personal Legend requires you to step into the unknown, which your ego sees as risky. Your ego’s job is to keep you safe, meaning within the confines of what’s known and habitual. You need to be stronger than your ego. Feel the fear, take a deep breath, smile, and go for it.

Here’s an effective way to remove the resistance caused by fear: visualize yourself having achieved your goal. Because your subconscious mind doesn’t differentiate what’s real from what you vividly imagine, you’ll trick it into believing that you’ve already done it. And, since you’re still alive, your ego will also think that it’s safe for you to pursue that dream, and it won’t cause as much resistance.

Your heart-centered dreams aren’t childish fantasies; they are guiding you to living your Personal Legend, your life purpose. Dare to pursue them! You’ll thank yourself for it when you get to the end of your life.

If there are three things you need in your life to be successful, they are boundaries, wellness, and personal growth.

Boundaries ensure you aren’t overextending yourself and that others are respecting you. Wellness ensures your mental, physical, and emotional health is strong. And personal growth helps you continually evolve.

There are so many ways to support the above, one being the development of specific traits. Let’s explore four known to incite individual growth, wellness, and healthy boundaries.

Resilience

Resilience is defined as “the ability to ‘bounce back’ or make it through difficult situations without becoming overwhelmed by them.” When you’re resilient, you make intelligent, intentional decisions about how to best navigate challenges and stressful events.

Resilience is incredibly influential when it comes to personal growth. Difficult situations push people out of their comfort zones. And when you’re uncomfortable, you do the most growing, whether you realise it right away or not.

Also, becoming more resilient makes you recognise and appreciate a problematic situation as a chance to grow initially versus always seeing tough times as something negative in your life.

Furthermore, resilience plays an integral role in wellness. The inability to handle stress and hardship can adversely affect your physical, mental, and emotional health. But when you implement specific practices to conquer strife, you feel more in control of your life, thus enabling you to still prioritise your holistic health despite what’s going on around you.

You can develop resilience by working diligently on your mindset. Strengthen and make it inherently positive. Aim to look for the good in every tough situation. Also, find support from friends and family to manage how overwhelmingly difficult circumstances can get.

Confidence

Confidence is the next trait you want to develop to support your boundaries, wellness, and personal growth. Confidence is essentially a firm trust in something. It’s also a strong belief in one’s abilities, qualities, and decisions.

You’re more willing to put yourself in situations or opportunities that inspire growth when you believe in yourself. You’re also more in tune with yourself, making it easier to set personal boundaries that honour who you are and what you need to thrive.

Confidence boosts wellness too. The better you feel about yourself and your abilities, the more you want to take care of yourself and develop those abilities. You’ll do what it takes to keep your mind and body healthy so that you can keep evolving.

You can build confidence by stepping out of your comfort zone regularly. For instance, travelling for personal enrichment can help you better your people skills, improve your creativity, and teach you how to look at things from different perspectives.

Reflection can also help you develop your confidence. Journal every day. Write down your fears, what causes you the most anxiety, and your current challenges. Doing so will help you come up with solutions. Don’t forget to write down what you’re proud of and grateful for as well.

Adaptivity

Adaptivity is another trait to develop to enhance your wellness and ability to grow personally. Adaptivity refers to being readily capable of adjusting to new conditions or circumstances. It’s important because life changes all the time.

If you don’t like change or have a hard time adjusting to it, life isn’t going to be as pleasant and stress-less as you want it to be. But, on the other hand, if you can adapt, you can make the most out of everything that comes your way.

Also, when you’re flexible, you can mitigate stress and embrace adventure and curiosity, which leads to personal growth. You learn who you are, how to care for yourself, and how to best balance your life.

Adaptivity comes with being intentional about how you work through unprecedented times and situations that don’t go as planned. It’s a good idea to develop a routine for times like these.

For instance, your first step may be taking a deep breath. Then, you identify what you can and cannot control. And after that, you put together a plan for improving or using the things you can control to better the situation.

Curiosity

Curiosity is our fourth and final suggestion for traits to develop to support your boundaries, wellness, and personal growth. Curiosity is a deep desire to learn or know something. It’s what stimulates our minds and hearts. It’s what makes someone a life-long learner.

Curiosity is integral to personal growth because it urges us to explore. It expands our empathy. It challenges us to achieve. Curiosity also tends to make us happier and more interested and interesting in our relationships.

You can cultivate curiosity by allowing yourself to explore trends, thoughts, people, and so forth. Give yourself time and space to dig into whatever you want to learn about. Don’t limit yourself to the internet or other online resources to lean into your curiosity, either. Meet new people, take classes, go to events, and take advantage of other offline opportunities.

Conclusion

Your boundaries, wellness, and personal growth should always be top priorities in your life. By developing resilience, confidence, adaptivity, and curiosity, you’ll be best equipped to set boundaries that honour you, care for your holistic health, and flourish personally.

When you look back on your life, what do you want to think about? Do you plan to reminisce on all of the good things that have happened and how they shaped who you are today? Or would you rather remember all of the bad decisions, challenging experiences, and mistakes made that hurt or wasted a portion of your life?

In my opinion, I think it is important to reflect on both. While it’s important to remember the hardships we’ve been through in our lives – without them we wouldn’t be where we are now. There are 3 very specific areas that I feel have helped me grow in a personal sense more than anything else in my life so far.

These aren’t simple lessons in a book or a lecture that you can just absorb and apply to your life. These are things that I’ve learned through experience and reflection, and I’m still learning and growing today.

1. We determine how much we’re worth by what we think about ourselves, others, and life in general.

This might seem like a pretty obvious lesson in life but it’s actually one of the most important because we can determine our own worth by how we think about ourselves and the world around us. If you’re looking for success in any kind of business or social setting (dating), then I’ll tell you right now that it doesn’t matter if you have 10 billion dollars or not – people are still going to judge you based on your thoughts and beliefs alone.

What determines our value isn’t necessarily what we do with our lives (which is often based on luck) but whether or not we believe that ‘our work’ is worthy or not in some sort of grand scheme or universe. We may not always be able to control what happens in our lives, but we can always control how we value ourselves and others.

“Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” – Maya Angelou

2. You don’t have to change your habits or personality just because someone else doesn’t like it – their opinions are THEIRS alone.

This is another one of those lessons that people tend to pick up on a little bit late in life, but if anything that makes its importance even worse! Basically, there’s going to come a time when you’re going to meet someone who has certain expectations of you as a person…but these expectations might not be realistic due to their motivations and personal beliefs. For example, sometimes parents might expect you to be a lawyer or doctor because that’s what they believe is best for their child.

However, this isn’t the case for everyone and so maybe your passion lies in music or writing novels. In this example, if you were also pressured into becoming a doctor – then there would obviously be some kind of conflict going on within yourself as a person. You should never have to give up something that you want to do just because someone else doesn’t like it! The reason why we’re put onto this Earth is to make our own choices and go after our OWN dreams instead of letting others determine what we can and cannot do with our lives .

3. You can’t change your life until you accept that you need to make a change.

When I was younger, I thought that this lesson would be pretty obvious – but as I got older, it really made me appreciate the fact that there are always different ways of perceiving our lives. For example, if someone wants to become rich and famous one day – their mind might simply overshadow any other possibility in their head because they feel like this is what they NEED to do right now.

However, this isn’t always true within our own lives because we think about things too literally instead of having an open mind. If you want to achieve success in any kind of business or social setting (dating) then you should be willing to try out different things instead of staying in your comfort zone. If you want something, then it’s up to YOU to actually go after it – nobody else is going to give it to you!

The three lessons above are some of the main things I want to pass on to everyone because they’ve come at an important time in my life where I need to start thinking about others instead of only myself. It’s great if we can learn to love ourselves first before anything else, but that doesn’t mean you should neglect everyone around you even though they might be your friends and family members!

If you are looking to improve yourself, it is up to you to make changes that will change your everyday life. Putting in hard work is necessary if you wish to grow yourself and pave the way to a more successful future. This might be the sign you were waiting for in order to start challenging yourself in order to improve certain areas in your life. The personal growth challenges you choose to follow can be bigger or smaller. Regardless of that, they are always a great place to start and can help you discover a lot of things about yourself. If you need help finding the right challenges to get started, here are some ideas you can use.

1. Set a morning routine for yourself

One of the biggest challenges you can set for yourself is following a certain routine every single morning. Many people struggle to find a way to start their day that will make them feel awake and motivated. This might be a good chance for you to start such a routine and enjoy its benefits. A simple and measurable goal is to start eating a nourishing breakfast every single day.

The important thing to remember is to start slow. You do not need to start waking up earlier and doing more things immediately. Take it one step at a time and only add new things after you are able to easily keep up with each day’s schedule. This way, the morning routine won’t become a chore and you will enjoy every part of the process.

“If you win the morning, you win the day.” – Tim Ferriss

2. Make little notes with positive affirmations

A great way to challenge yourself to grow is connected to the way you talk to yourself on a daily basis. Change comes through positive situations and using positive affirmations can help you feel happier and more confident. You can start this challenge by putting your favorite affirmations on post-it notes and placing them around your house. Some great affirmations you can learn and challenge yourself to repeat daily are the following:

I am worthy.

I am enough.

I don’t sweat the small stuff

I am capable of change.

I can do anything I set my mind to.

Repeating these affirmations on a daily basis can help you remind yourself of how worthy you are of good things to come your way. Change might not happen overnight, but believing you are capable and worthy of it will make things a lot easier.

3. Declutter your house and working space

If you tend to let things clutter around your house and working space, this is the perfect challenge for you. Keeping your house clean and tidy surely requires energy and time but leaving it cluttered will impact your productivity. You can break this challenge into smaller goals and make it a lot easier for yourself to keep up.

For example, you can start by setting up a system to take out the trash every day. Along with that, you can try to always return things to their spot after using them. These simple steps can help you set up new habits and ace this challenge without any issue. At the end of the day, the more organized your personal space is, the more productive and positive you will be.

4. Read a book every month

Something that can truly change your life for the better is reading more books. Books have so much to give you and it is very sad that fewer people seem to devote time to reading. Books can help you find a productive way to spend your time, offer you the knowledge and help you expand your vocabulary and way of thinking.

Thankfully, technology has helped us make this challenge a lot easier. Services such as Scribd and Audible give us access to thousands of audiobooks. If you have a hectic schedule and can never seem to find the team to read, you can switch to audiobooks instead. By listening to a chapter while you drive to work or do the laundry you will be able to easily reach your goal every month.

5. Limit the time you spend on social media

While phones might be necessary for our day-to-day life they can also become quite addictive. Making sure to get enough off-screen time is essential and can help you change your life for the better. This challenge is an easy one on paper but can be rather challenging. You should start by turning your phone off an hour before you sleep.

Getting some time away from the screen will help you spend more time doing other things you enjoy. Along with that, it can help you improve the quality of your sleep and make you feel less nervous. Instead of spending time looking at what others are doing online, spend this time for yourself. Cook a meal you enjoy or practice some yoga before bed and spend your time doing something good for you.

6. Try to take a walk every single day

If you live a hectic lifestyle, you might find that you never have enough time to exercise on the daily. Going to the gym might not be an option for many reasons, but going on a daily walk can be the next best thing. Apart from exercising, walking can offer you more benefits than you can imagine.

Taking a walk can help you find some time with yourself and your thoughts. It can allow you to rethink certain situations and things that bother you and allow you to see them with a clear mind. Some fresh air and a change of scenery are necessary on a daily basis. Spending more time with yourself can prove very useful when it comes to your personal growth and walking can greatly contribute to that.
