“People ask the difference between a leader and a boss…. The leader works in the open, and the boss in covert. The leader leads and the boss drives.” famously said by Theodore Roosevelt.

The caption of this article probably puts you in a fix whether you have to massage your boss’s ego. Before we conclude, there are various aspects to know such as the difference between a boss and a leader, and the four models of organizational behavior (OB).

Organizational Behavior Models

There are four models of organizational behavior namely autocratic, custodial, supportive, and collegial. The autocratic model prevailed initially where employees were under the mercy of employers. In this model, the employees worked as a labor and obeyed whatever the bosses ordered. Subsequently surfaced another model named custodial where the employees cannot be fired as they are provided with job security and other financial and non-financial benefits.

It is further followed by another model named supportive where employees are supported by employers and bosses above them. It is fairly better than the previous models of autocratic and custodial. Currently, we have a collegial model where there is not much gap between the superiors and subordinates as all are treated with requests equally. Generation Y appreciates this collegial model, and it is mostly followed by American management and top global companies in the world. In this model, there will not be any bosses but only leaders. However, we still find bosses in the guise of leaders.

There is a difference between bosses and leaders as bosses are mostly arrogant and egotistical and they often come with a workaholic attitude. Russell H. Ewing differentiates between bosses and leaders as follows: “A boss creates fear, leader confidence. A boss fixes blame, and a leader corrects mistakes. A boss knows all, a leader asks questions. A boss makes work drudgery, a leader makes it interesting.”

The people who work with bosses find it tough to get along with them as the expectations of the bosses are high and they are mostly task-oriented. In contrast, the leaders are a blend of both task-orientation and people-orientation with a heart to make a difference in the lives of their employees. The leaders adopt a transformational leadership style, treat their subordinates like colleagues, and get the tasks executed successfully.

The leaders support the subordinates in their training and development and quicken their career advancement. They empathize and listen to their subordinates and lead their teams successfully.

If you happen to work under a boss you have to be more careful in your work. As long as you do your work sincerely you don’t have to bother your boss, and you don’t have to massage his or her ego. All that you must do is be assertive in your approach, actions, and communication.

Tips to Handle Your Boss

Handle your boss with tact but not at the cost of your integrity and principles. Be in his or her good books to get the tasks executed smoothly. At the same time, learn to draw the line between praise and flattery.

Be strong in your domain so that you will have respect in the workplace and the boss will not have any scope to point you out.

Avoid arguing with your boss because there is a popular cliché – ‘boss is always right’. Therefore, keep your views within yourself. When the organizational issues are involved express your views assertively.

Be professional and avoid interfering in his or her personal life to maintain longevity in relations.

Don’t surprise your boss. Keep your boss informed whenever you do important tasks. The boss should not feel that s/he was bypassed or neglected.

Emphasize ideas rather than individuals in organizational aspects to avoid getting into egoistic issues.

Keep your boss in good humor to avoid organizational politics and ensure a peaceful workplace ambiance.

It is often said in the corporate world that people don’t leave organizations but they leave bad bosses. It is mostly correct as organizations are often good but the people who lead are often found to be problematic for the employees. Therefore, instead of blaming the bad bosses, it is better to understand your boss well and mold yourself accordingly to build chemistry and compatibility to get things going smoothly.

You cannot choose your bosses and just because of bad bosses you cannot shift organizations frequently. Hence, the best thing is to understand the ground realities and personality types; and build chemistry to enable a peaceful workplace ambiance and outcome.

When you lose someone close to you, it can be difficult to find ways to remember them and celebrate their life. While finding the right words to eulogize a loved one can be difficult, there are endless ways to honor and remember that person. Acts both big and small can keep their memory alive in a comfortable and meaningful way for you. And taking action in remembrance doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

1. Commission A Piece Of Art

If your loved one was an artist or appreciated the arts, you can commission a piece of art in their memory. This can be anything from a painting or sculpture to a musical composition. You might want to consider urns with motorcycle motifs if your loved one was a motorcycle enthusiast. You can also commission a piece of art to commemorate a special event or memory you shared with your loved one. This is a great way to keep their memory alive tangibly and beautifully. Commemorative art is a beautiful way to honor your loved one’s memory and keep their spirit alive. It’s also a great way to support the arts, which can be therapeutic for both the artist and the viewer.

2. Create A Memorial Garden

If your loved one enjoyed spending time outdoors, you could create a small memorial garden in their honor. This can be as simple as setting up a potted plant on your porch or balcony or planting flowers in your yard. You can also visit a local park or nature preserve and dedicate a bench or picnic table in your loved one’s name. You can create a community garden or wildlife sanctuary for an especially meaningful tribute in your loved one’s name. This is a great way to involve other family members and friends and contribute something positive to the world after such a tragic loss.

3. Volunteer For A Cause They Cared About

Many people find comfort in giving back to important causes to their loved ones. If your loved one was passionate about a particular issue, you can volunteer your time or donate to a related organization in their memory. This is a great way to keep their legacy alive while helping others. For instance, if your loved one cared deeply about environmental causes, you could volunteer for a local beach clean-up or donate to an organization that supports renewable energy. If they were passionate about helping the homeless, you could volunteer at a soup kitchen or donate to a local shelter.

4. Make A Donation In Their Name

Donating to a charity in your loved one’s name is another great way to keep their memory alive while helping others. Instead of flowers at funeral services, this can be done as an ongoing tribute. You can also set up a named fund at a charity of your choice to support their work in perpetuity. You can also make smaller donations in your loved one’s name to support everyday causes they care about. For instance, you could donate to an animal shelter if they loved animals or a local school if they were passionate about education.

5. Start A Scholarship Fund

Creating a scholarship fund is another great way to keep your loved one’s memory alive while helping others achieve their dreams. This can be done through a community foundation or by setting up an account with a specific college or university. You can also start a small scholarship program within your own family or social circle. Naming a scholarship after your loved one is a great way to honor their memory and legacy. It’s also a wonderful way to ensure that their name lives on long after they are gone.

6. Plant A Tree

Planting a tree is symbolic of remembering your loved one while giving back to the environment. Trees clean the air and provide homes for wildlife, so they are a perfect way to honor someone who cares about nature and the planet. You can plant a tree in your yard, at a local park, or through a national organization like the Arbor Day Foundation. Trees take time to grow and reach their full potential, so they are a perfect way to symbolize the enduring love you have for your lost loved one. They also provide a tangible and lasting reminder of the life and legacy of your loved one.

These are just a few ways you can remember your loved one. No matter how you choose to honor their memory, the most important thing is that you do it in a way that is meaningful to you. After all, grief is a very personal experience, and there is no “right” way to deal with it. What matters most is that you find a way to keep your loved one’s memory alive in your heart.

It’s been over a year since the start of the pandemic, but there does seem to be some light at the end of this quarantine tunnel. No, really. Vaccines are being created quickly, and their effectiveness is quite promising. In many states, all adults can, or are about to, get the vaccine; not just the elderly.

When you came into lockdown, you couldn’t wait to get out. Now, you may have some anxiety coming back into normalcy. If this is you, here are some things to remember as you integrate back into society.

Things Won’t Instantly Go Back To Normal

Even if you have a vaccine, you are not going to return to normal just yet. For one thing, you still need to wear a mask. Even if you are vaccinated, vaccines don’t fully work until there is herd immunity. If you’re in a group and everyone is vaccinated, that’s one thing. However, you may still need to wear a mask for the time being.

Also, there are some places that may not reopen just yet. Are you excited for a concert in a few months? Don’t be surprised if it gets pushed back again.

In Some Cases, You May Like The Conveniences Brought Thanks To COVID

Are you working from home thanks to COVID? You may find that even though you can return to your job safely, you may prefer the convenience of not having to wear pants all the time while you are working. The same applies to ordering DoorDash or watching movies on Netflix instead of going to the theater.

Don’t think that you have to go back to 2019 entirely. Take what you like about the pandemic and keep doing it.

Don’t Get Rid Of Your Progress

With the lockdown, many people spent their time improving. Maybe you wanted to learn a new language for when you were able to travel abroad again. Perhaps you spent time improving art. Your goal may have been to drink less, and the lack of parties made it so that this was easier.

When the world feels open again, do not drop everything you’ve done to improve as a person.

There’s No Shame In Taking A Vacation

Once you are able to do so safely, don’t be ashamed if you want to take a vacation from work to explore the world. If you can afford it, then do it! It’s as simple as that.

COVID-19 made many of us regret not doing more before the pandemic started. Maybe you regret not going to more events, or perhaps you want to consider moving abroad. Well, your life is far from over. Take that vacation! Enjoy life! You will be glad you did.

With That Said, There’s Also No Rush

Do you feel emotionally drained? Then you don’t have to rush back to your friends immediately. Did the COVID-19 pandemic impact your finances? Then don’t spend money on a trip you cannot afford.

It’s essential to get your life together as we start to return to normalcy. Do not feel as though you have to rush going back into a world you are not ready for.

Seek Help

If you feel anxious returning to normalcy, speak with a therapist or a counselor. If you aren’t vaccinated, or you do not feel like leaving your home, online therapy is one such resource you can use to help you prepare for normalcy.

BetterHelp is a website that can assist you in that. It can connect you to a therapist who can help you on your own schedule. If you are someone who doesn’t want to leave your home, speak to a therapist online today.

Setbacks may be inevitable. However, that doesn’t make them any easier to accept or the accompanying pain or disappointment that we at times experience. In many ways, 2020 was a setback for most of us. Dreams, plans that we had, goals that we wanted to achieve, all may have been postponed or delayed more or less.

The greatest challenge is getting the desire and will to move forward again, especially when a setback may cause a voice of discouragement inside us to say, “what’s the use?” or “why even bother trying?” It is that same voice which suggests to us that we have now moved further away from, rather than closer to our goals. Moving past that voice is crucial.

“To have a comeback, you have to have a setback.” – Mr. T.

We’ve been hurt and disappointed by something that was unexpected or didn’t work out in the way that we had planned or anticipated. However, there are steps that we can take toward making our own comeback now. These steps can move us past our pain and get us back on the road toward our goals and dreams once again.

The first step in moving on is taking small and gradual actions that begin to push us forward and further away with each step, from any disappointment or setbacks that we have been through.

Here are four strategies that have helped me to start moving forward again and beyond setbacks:

1. Write About It and Create a Vision Board

Journaling is a great way to get out any frustration, disappointment or anger that you may feel toward a disappointment in life. It feels great to just release all of that onto the page and in a way to start freeing yourself of it. However, after pouring out that frustration onto the page, the inevitable next question is, “What’s next?” and for me that seems to arise naturally as a part of the journaling process. It’s an exciting place to be because our viewpoint is naturally starting to change on its own. Journaling lets you begin to consider that question and to also begin thinking about those first moves toward meaningfully moving forward again.

After journaling, creating a vision board with beautiful images also serves as a great way to get motivated again. There are so many beautiful images in magazines or on the web that you can print out and then paste onto a brightly colored piece of poster board. Collect images that uplift you and that reflect that next chapter or experience in your life that you want to have. It’s great to have something that is aspirational in front of you and represents for you alone, where you’re moving toward each day.

A vision board can help keep our standards high and keep us looking forward toward what we want, rather than focusing on the past.

2. Start Exercising

Exercising helps us to get that winning attitude back into our lives. It helps us to take control of our path again. We move out of the mind and get into the body. The release of endorphins and change of focus does something powerful. All of a sudden we’re not thinking so much about the setbacks that have taken place, but have rather changed our focus to doing something right in the present moment that is good and progressive for ourselves. Great ideas also tend to come when we’re relaxed or doing something that doesn’t involve focusing on the problem or a disappointment that has taken place. Exercising makes us feel better, puts us back in control and helps with fostering a can do attitude that we can use to help propel ourselves forward. It’s a small and progressive step that can lead to positive changes both physically, as well as directionally in our lives as a whole.

“I think whether you’re having setbacks or not, the role of a leader is to always display a winning attitude.” – Colin Powell

3. Answer Only The Fans

Our time and energy is precious. Give back to those who contribute to you in some way. We don’t need to use our resources arguing or responding to the haters who aren’t in our corner anyway. It is not as though we are going to convince them to suddenly change their minds about us. We are not accountable to our haters, but can be responsive to those who are on our side, who have supported us and who continue to add value to our lives. A fan club is a collection of people who support or value the work of a celebrity, athlete, singer, performer etc. Celebrities often give private VIP concerts and performances just for those who are members of their fan clubs. We too can use our energy to share ideas, inspiration and our own responsiveness with those who we know are in our corner in a similar way.

4. Start Small But Make It New and Different

Modern day passenger ships are built in pre-constructed blocks that are then put together to form a massive vessel. We can do the same by making a small effort to work on something that is new and different and that moves us in the direction that we now want to go in our lives after a setback or disappointment. We don’t have to build the whole ship at once so to speak and be overwhelmed by the enormity of the project or what we now want to do differently in our lives.

We can just pick one new thing and begin working on that small metaphorical block in our lives. Eventually all of those blocks can be put together to create something new, radically different and positive in our lives. In a way, the setback has now led us on to this new path and we can begin on it through one small, building block type action at a time.

Writing about our frustrations, but then asking positive and forward moving questions in a journal, creating a vision board, exercising, using our energy only to respond to those who give energy back to us, and starting small on something new and different are all small and gradual steps that we can use to successfully start moving away from any setbacks that we experience. In a way, the setback can be the event which finally propels us forward onto a new, brighter and even better path than we may have ever otherwise anticipated.

Everyone starts out with the best of intentions. Yet, how often do we forget to focus on our priorities? The answer is that even top performers can have their focus yanked away. The good news is that there are some quick tricks anyone can use to stop forgetting their priorities.

The Priority Pyramid Exercise

We all know that top performers are practically addicted to meditation. But did you know that you can use meditation to remember your top priorities better? Here’s how:

Of all the things you need to get done, pick just three. Ideally, these will be truly deserving of attention.

While seated or performing a walking meditation, arrange these priorities mentally in the form of a pyramid.

Mentally rotate them in your mind to “test” the level of priority

For example, let’s say your three priorities have been boiled down to writing for an hour, making some business outreach calls and publishing a new video. You would mentally rotate these priorities and ask each time a task reached the top position if it really needs to be done first.

This exercise relates to what scientists call cognitive switching, and it has been shown to improve critical thinking skills. The best part? If you practice this consistently over 90-days, it will likely become a permanent habit. You won’t have to remember to do it because you’ll be positively addicted to the exercise.

As a result, you’ll be trained to focus on testing your priorities frequently. We know just how powerful testing can be for improving results, so enjoy the renewed success this practice brings.

“The first step to success is knowing your priorities.” – Aspesh

The To-Do List Memory Palace

Of course, all priorities come with a list of individual steps to complete. To help make it easy and fun, I suggest an ancient memory technique called the Memory Palace. Simply put, to use this mnemonic device, you take any room you’re familiar with and bring it to your imagination.

It can be any room you choose. In fact, it doesn’t have to be a whole room. You can easily just use the desk in your home office. Once you’ve chosen something, you place associations in this room that help you remember the things you need to do.

Let’s say that you decide your top priority is to publish a new video. The steps are:

Record the video and upload to YouTube

Add title and tags

Write description

Add to your blog and press publish

To remember these steps, you could just jot them down. But that robs you of some beneficial memory exercise. Plus, it won’t help you train your procedural memory to improve so you keep taking consistent action, almost on autopilot. This technique has also been proven to increase focus and concentration, so using it is a win-win.

For that reason, I highly recommend placing associations in a Memory Palace around your work space. Like this:

In this example, I’ve used the walls and corners of the desk to attach some associations.

The YouTube logo floating on the corner makes it easy to remember shooting and uploading the video

The image of adding a sticky note to a computer screen helps recall adding a title and tags

A typewriter on another part of the wall helps trigger the need to write a description

An image of the WordPress interface helps with remembering the final publishing step

To make these associations memorable, you want to exaggerate them a little. It can also help to have them interact with each other. For example, the YouTube logo can be beating like a heart and expressing love for the sticky notes. The typewriter can have its keys falling off and clattering onto the WordPress screen.

By elaborating the images in this way, you form a chain between the associations that makes each part even more memorable. This is essentially how people have been using the Memory Palace technique for thousands of years. Now you know how to do it for crushing your goals too.

Obviously, this technique works for both simple and complex, multi-step tasks. The trick is to get started and practice it consistently enough so that you can develop habits of memory and associate those new skills with taking action.

“If it’s a priority you’ll find a way. If it isn’t, you’ll find an excuse.” – Jim Rohn

Combining Skills of Implementation Over the Long Term

Nothing happens overnight, and many people are not used to operating their minds as I’ve just suggested. It’s normal to be rusty when using exercises and processes like these. To help loosen up, I suggest keeping a journal for the first 90-days. That way you aren’t juggling everything in your mind. You can also use the journal to draw your Memory Palace as a simple square. This helps develop more advanced abilities with spatial memory.

There’s no cookie-cutter advice on how exactly to keep a journal, so it’s best to experiment. That way you’re also giving yourself the gift of exploring something new and discovering exactly what approaches work best for you. This form of self-optimization is always deeply personal, even if the brain science behind it is fundamentally the same for everyone.

Finally, consider using these skills as a marathon, not a race. Before you know it, you’ll realize that you’ve developed incredible endurance. You’ll be glad that you trained your imagination and memory to help you with consistency along the way.
