<p>Though the adage coined by American nutritionist Adelle Davis about how one should: &#8220;Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper&#8221; comes with caveats these days, Davis&#8217; primary point is still heeded by nutrition experts.  That point is, namely, breakfast is important and there will be some side effects if you&#8217;re skipping it regularly.</p>
<p>When you start your day with a balanced breakfast—one that has plenty of protein, healthy carbs, and the right mix of vitamins and minerals—your body tends to work at its best. Essentially, you set yourself up for <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://www.livestrong.com/article/13429520-how-eating-breakfast-like-a-king-can-help-you-lose-weight/">ideal physical health, mental acuity, and stable energy levels</a>.</p>
<p>On the other hand, when you skip breakfast, you may be inviting in a host of problems in both the short term and long term. Here are some side effects you may not know about skipping breakfast.</p>
<p class="c-article__related-link"><span class="c-article__related-link-inner">RELATED: Eating Habits to Lose Abdominal Fat As You Age, Say Dietitians</span></p>
<figure id="640500" class="alignnone"><noscript><img fetchpriority="high" class="lazyload alignnone size-medium wp-image-640500 " decoding="async" src="https://healyourhealthyourself.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Secret-Side-Effects-of-Skipping-Breakfast-According-to-Research-—.jpg" alt="eggs and toast breakfast" width="640" height="469" /></noscript><figcaption class="wp-caption-text"><span class="credit">Shutterstock</span></figcaption></figure>
<p>You know how you can delay eating for hours on some days without feeling all that hungry, but if you have even a little morsel of food, you suddenly feel famished for more? That&#8217;s because eating revs up your metabolism for the day, according to a study in <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://academic.oup.com/jn/article/147/9/1722/4743530"><em>The Journal of Nutrition</em></a>. They concluded that eating breakfast as the largest meal of the day prevented weight gain.</p>
<p>And starting it up early is a good thing, as your body is most efficient at secreting insulin, digesting food, and other processes early on in the day after a good night of rest. Delaying eating means delaying starting up these healthy processes and therein reducing their efficacy at subsequent meals.</p>

<p>A healthy breakfast can not only give you the energy and nutrients your body needs to launch itself into the day, but it can also stabilize blood sugar levels to stave off feelings of hunger and associated irritability throughout the day, <span>says Mary Stewart, RD, LD, founder of </span>Cultivate Nutrition, in a recent <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://www.yahoo.com/video/one-major-side-effect-not-122729050.html">Yahoo article</a>. By not eating breakfast you could be setting yourself up for failure later in the day, making it harder for you to make healthier choices due to blood sugar fluctuations.</p>
<figure id="640491" class="alignnone"><img loading="lazy" class="lazyload alignnone size-medium wp-image-640491 " decoding="async" src="https://healyourhealthyourself.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/1651543892_822_Secret-Side-Effects-of-Skipping-Breakfast-According-to-Research-—.jpg" alt="weight gain" width="640" height="469" /><noscript><img class="lazyload alignnone size-medium wp-image-640491 " decoding="async" src="https://healyourhealthyourself.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/1651543892_822_Secret-Side-Effects-of-Skipping-Breakfast-According-to-Research-—.jpg" alt="weight gain" width="640" height="469" /></noscript><figcaption class="wp-caption-text"><span class="credit">Shutterstock</span></figcaption></figure>
<p>Studies overwhelmingly find that eating a majority of one&#8217;s daily calories in the morning is the best way to shed pounds or maintain a stable weight, <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://www.lifehack.org/506023/research-says-its-healthier-to-breakfast-like-a-king-lunch-like-a-prince-and-dine-like-a-beggar">reports Life Hack</a>. On the other hand, eating larger meals closer to bedtime is correlated with gain weight.</p>
<p>And the same can be said for eating a number of smaller meals and snacks later in the day, too: it&#8217;s far better to do the bulk of your eating early. A study at San Raffaele Rome Open University concluded that timing was. even more important than what was being eaten. The study of 18 women showed that those who consumed most of the day&#8217;s calories in the first half of the day lost more weight and had improved insulin sensitivity.</p>
<figure id="640492" class="alignnone"><img loading="lazy" class="lazyload alignnone size-medium wp-image-640492 " decoding="async" src="https://healyourhealthyourself.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/1651543892_967_Secret-Side-Effects-of-Skipping-Breakfast-According-to-Research-—.jpg" alt="no breakfast" width="640" height="469" /><noscript><img loading="lazy" class="lazyload alignnone size-medium wp-image-640492 " decoding="async" src="https://healyourhealthyourself.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/1651543892_967_Secret-Side-Effects-of-Skipping-Breakfast-According-to-Research-—.jpg" alt="no breakfast" width="640" height="469" /></noscript><figcaption class="wp-caption-text"><span class="credit">Shutterstock</span></figcaption></figure>
<p>The stronger and more energized your body, the stronger and more energized your immune system. A healthy breakfast can foster a robust, healthy immune response when you come into contact with any manner of bacteria or virus. As we previously reported, &#8220;Periods of fasting appear to trigger damage to the cells and the body needs to be fed food regularly in order to maintain healthy levels of immune cells that fight infections and improve the action of fighter cells (T-cells) in the body,&#8221; explained Tehzeeb Lalani, a nutritionist with Scale Beyond Scale.</p>
<figure id="640493" class="alignnone"><img loading="lazy" class="lazyload alignnone size-medium wp-image-640493 " decoding="async" src="https://healyourhealthyourself.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/1651543892_592_Secret-Side-Effects-of-Skipping-Breakfast-According-to-Research-—.jpg" alt="hair loss" width="640" height="469"/><noscript><img loading="lazy" class="lazyload alignnone size-medium wp-image-640493 " decoding="async" src="https://healyourhealthyourself.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/1651543892_592_Secret-Side-Effects-of-Skipping-Breakfast-According-to-Research-—.jpg" alt="hair loss" width="640" height="469"/></noscript><figcaption class="wp-caption-text"><span class="credit">Shutterstock</span></figcaption></figure>
<p>You can file this one in both the &#8220;decidedly unexpected&#8221; and &#8220;definitely unwelcome&#8221; columns, but habitually skipping breakfast can lead to hair loss, <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://www.thehealthsite.com/news/important-meal-eat-why-skipping-breakfast-isnt-a-good-idea-foods-food-breaking-the-fast-ai0718-588329/">says The Health Site</a>. That&#8217;s because an insufficient infusion of protein in the morning curbs your body&#8217;s ability to produce keratin, the building block of your hair (and nails). Without a protein-rich breakfast in the morning, you may well, be leaving more hairs on the pillow at night, and growing less to replace them.</p>
<figure id="640487" class="alignnone"><img loading="lazy" class="lazyload alignnone size-medium wp-image-640487 " decoding="async" src="https://healyourhealthyourself.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/1651543892_246_Secret-Side-Effects-of-Skipping-Breakfast-According-to-Research-—.jpg" alt="not eating breakfast" width="640" height="469" /><noscript><img loading="lazy" class="lazyload alignnone size-medium wp-image-640487 " decoding="async" src="https://healyourhealthyourself.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/1651543892_246_Secret-Side-Effects-of-Skipping-Breakfast-According-to-Research-—.jpg" alt="not eating breakfast" width="640" height="469" /></noscript><figcaption class="wp-caption-text"><span class="credit">Shutterstock</span></figcaption></figure>
<p>A study of women 18-45 years old showed <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25545767/">increased cortisol levels </a>among breakfast skippers. Cortisol is often called the &#8220;stress hormone,&#8221; says the Mayo Clinic. And while cortisol can be a vital natural chemical, increasing glucose content in the bloodstream and enhancing your energy levels, sense of awareness, and even your body&#8217;s ability to repair damaged cells, an excess in everyday life can leave you feeling fatigued, irritable, confused, depressed, and, quite simply, stressed.</p>
<p>&#8220;By having breakfast, you refill the liver glycogen levels so that the cortisol levels can decrease. If you don&#8217;t eat breakfast, then cortisol levels will continue to increase to maintain blood glucose levels eventually causing insulin resistance that makes you more hungry throughout the day,&#8221; said Dr. Barry Sears, president of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation, in a previous article.</p>
<figure id="640495" class="alignnone"><img loading="lazy" class="lazyload alignnone size-medium wp-image-640495 " decoding="async" src="https://healyourhealthyourself.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/1651543892_965_Secret-Side-Effects-of-Skipping-Breakfast-According-to-Research-—.jpg" alt="headache" width="640" height="469" /><noscript><img loading="lazy" class="lazyload alignnone size-medium wp-image-640495 " decoding="async" src="https://healyourhealthyourself.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/1651543892_965_Secret-Side-Effects-of-Skipping-Breakfast-According-to-Research-—.jpg" alt="headache" width="640" height="469" /></noscript><figcaption class="wp-caption-text"><span class="credit">Shutterstock</span></figcaption></figure>
<p>Do you often suffer intense headaches in the afternoons? It could be the fact that you&#8217;re not eating a proper breakfast. <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://www.tatahealth.com/article/harmful-effects-of-skipping-breakfast">According to Tata Health</a>, when you forgo breakfast in the morning, you invite in hypoglycemia later, and this is a biological process wherein blood sugar levels drop and blood pressure increases. And, this sudden elevation in blood pressure can cause debilitating headaches.<span aria-hidden="true" style="display: none">6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e</span></p>
<figure id="640496" class="alignnone"><img loading="lazy" class="lazyload alignnone size-medium wp-image-640496 " decoding="async" src="https://healyourhealthyourself.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/1651543892_467_Secret-Side-Effects-of-Skipping-Breakfast-According-to-Research-—.jpg" alt="nighttime indigestion" width="640" height="469" /><noscript><img loading="lazy" class="lazyload alignnone size-medium wp-image-640496 " decoding="async" src="https://healyourhealthyourself.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/1651543892_467_Secret-Side-Effects-of-Skipping-Breakfast-According-to-Research-—.jpg" alt="nighttime indigestion" width="640" height="469" /></noscript><figcaption class="wp-caption-text"><span class="credit">Shutterstock</span></figcaption></figure>
<p><a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://www.lifehack.org/506023/research-says-its-healthier-to-breakfast-like-a-king-lunch-like-a-prince-and-dine-like-a-beggar">According to Life Hack</a>, it takes a good three hours for a human body to digest foods, so if you compensate for a skipped breakfast at the start of the day with a larger-than-usual dinner at the end of the day, you will almost surely go to bed with undigested or semi-digested food in your system. And that can lead to discomfort and bloating, interrupted sleep, acid reflux, and perhaps even some odd dreams, <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/health/what-your-dreams-say-about-your-health/news-story/b3df9eef6422178fc9feb13a2b721080">reports <em>News</em></a>.</p>
<figure id="640499" class="alignnone"><img loading="lazy" class="lazyload alignnone size-medium wp-image-640499 " decoding="async" src="https://healyourhealthyourself.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/1651543892_920_Secret-Side-Effects-of-Skipping-Breakfast-According-to-Research-—.jpg" alt="food diabetes" width="640" height="469" /><noscript><img loading="lazy" class="lazyload alignnone size-medium wp-image-640499 " decoding="async" src="https://healyourhealthyourself.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/1651543892_920_Secret-Side-Effects-of-Skipping-Breakfast-According-to-Research-—.jpg" alt="food diabetes" width="640" height="469" /></noscript><figcaption class="wp-caption-text"><span class="credit">Shutterstock</span></figcaption></figure>
<p>There are all sorts of acute problems caused by skipping breakfast, such as headaches and sugar cravings but the insidious side effects of missed morning meals can have much larger, longer-term effects on your health as well. In fact for some people, habitually skipping breakfast can dramatically increase the likelihood of the development of Type 2 diabetes. Chronically increased insulin resistance and hormone imbalances caused by improper breakfast practices are the culprits.</p>

<p>If you are a chocolate lover, then you are not alone. According to research, <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/niallmccarthy/2015/07/22/the-worlds-biggest-chocolate-consumers-infographic/?sh=58df77204484">Americans, on average, eat approximately 9.5 pounds of chocolate per year</a>, coming in 9th place for the world&#8217;s top 10 chocolate consumers. If you think that&#8217;s a lot though, take a look at Switzerland—on average each person there enjoys approximately 19.8 pounds of chocolate annually. Talk about a sweet tooth!</p>
<p>Even though chocolate is delicious, some variations of it may have negative effects on our health—as it turns out, not all chocolate is created equal. For example, dark chocolate may have health benefits when enjoyed in moderation, but other types, such as white and milk chocolate, can be packed with fat and added sugar.</p>
<p>&#8220;To get the maximum health benefits from cacao, you want to choose a dark chocolate that is 70% or higher,&#8221; explains Danielle McAvoy, MSPH, RD, and Registered Dietitian with <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://stronghomegym.com/">Strong Home Gym</a>. &#8220;The percentage of cacao also tells you the percentage of sugar,&#8221; says McAvoy. For example, if a chocolate is labeled as &#8220;50%&#8221; that means it is made of 50% cacao and 50% sugar and dairy.</p>
<p>But even healthy dark chocolate can be over-consumed. If you feel like your chocolate habits are negatively impacting your health, cutting it out could help. Cutting out chocolate may feel difficult at first, but it can work wonders for both your mind and body. From getting a better night&#8217;s rest to experiencing fewer mood swings, here are some of the effects of giving up chocolate for 30 days.</p>
<p>While you&#8217;re making healthier choices, check out Eating Habits to Lose Abdominal Fat As You Age, Say Dietitians.</p>
<figure id="622871" class="alignnone"><noscript><img loading="lazy" class="lazyload alignnone size-medium wp-image-622871 " decoding="async" src="https://healyourhealthyourself.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/7-Incredible-Effects-of-Giving-Up-Chocolate-for-a-Month.jpg" alt="feeling moody" width="640" height="469" /></noscript><figcaption class="wp-caption-text"><span class="credit">Shutterstock</span></figcaption></figure>
<p>When we cut out chocolate we are also cutting out sugar, which can then have a balancing effect on our moods.</p>
<p>&#8220;When you eliminate sugar from your diet, you&#8217;re getting rid of one of the main causes of mood swings and irritability,&#8221; explains Jay Cowin, NNCP, RNT, RNC, CHN, CSNA, Registered Nutritionist and Director of Formulations at <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://www.asystem.com/">ASYSTEM</a>. Cowin explains that sugar is a toxin that can deplete energy while also wreaking havoc on blood sugar levels. &#8220;[This] can lead to mood swings, cravings, and other unhealthy behaviors,&#8221; he says.</p>

<p>Having trouble reaching your weight loss goals? Eliminating chocolate from your diet, even if it&#8217;s just for a month, can help cut back on calories and sugar which can then lead to weight loss.<span aria-hidden="true" style="display: none">6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e</span></p>
<p>&#8220;Because added sugars are often hidden in foods and drinks, and more especially in chocolate, it can be tough to track just how much sugar you&#8217;re eating each day,&#8221; says Cowin, &#8220;cutting back on added sugars can help you lose weight and improve your overall health.&#8221;</p>

<p>According to research, <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://www.cedars-sinai.org/newsroom/acid-reflux-affects-nearly-a-third-of-us-adults-weekly/">almost one-third of Americans may experience acid reflux weekly</a>. When we think of heartburn or acid reflux, images of tomato sauce, alcohol, and fried foods may come to mind, but did you know that chocolate is also a culprit? &#8220;Chocolate is an acidic food and can cause or worsen symptoms of heartburn or acid reflux,&#8221; shares McAvoy, &#8220;The sweeter the chocolate, the more triggering it can be.&#8221;</p>
<figure id="622874" class="alignnone"><img loading="lazy" class="lazyload alignnone size-medium wp-image-622874 " decoding="async" src="https://healyourhealthyourself.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/1645361066_862_7-Incredible-Effects-of-Giving-Up-Chocolate-for-a-Month.jpg" alt="sleep" width="640" height="469" /><noscript><img loading="lazy" class="lazyload alignnone size-medium wp-image-622874 " decoding="async" src="https://healyourhealthyourself.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/1645361066_862_7-Incredible-Effects-of-Giving-Up-Chocolate-for-a-Month.jpg" alt="sleep" width="640" height="469" /></noscript><figcaption class="wp-caption-text"><span class="credit">Shutterstock</span></figcaption></figure>
<p>If you indulge in chocolate later in the day you may find that going to sleep at night may be a struggle. This is because chocolate contains caffeine and can keep you up. McAvoy points out that caffeine is okay in moderation, but if you are someone who is guzzling down coffee in the morning, having chocolate in the afternoon or evening may disrupt your sleep. &#8220;Caffeine can also contribute to anxiety, so reducing the amount you consume can help you feel more relaxed,&#8221; McAvoy adds.</p>

<p>By avoiding chocolate for a month you may develop increased emotional awareness which can help improve mindful eating. &#8220;I know firsthand that eating chocolate is an easy way to pacify uncomfortable emotions,&#8221; says Sylvia Gonsahn-Bollie, M.D., dual-board certified obesity &amp; metabolic health physician, bestselling author, personalized lifestyle coach, and CEO of <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://www.embraceyouweightloss.com/about-us">EmbraceYOU Weight &amp; Wellness</a>. &#8220;When I gave up chocolate for a month I was forced to &#8220;feel my feelings,&#8221; she adds, &#8220;This emotional awareness helped improve my mindful eating.&#8221;</p>
<p>Dr. Bollie also said that she felt &#8220;a greater connection and clarity&#8221; when she wasn&#8217;t using food to &#8220;soothe&#8221; her feelings. &#8220;This is a common pattern I see with other emotional eaters that I work with on their weight and wellness journey,&#8221; she points out.</p>

Enjoy one of these a couple of times per week and that&#8217;s nearly 200 grams of added sugar, just from chocolate, each month. According to a 2018 research study, it was found that <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29408694/">diets that are high in sugar can put you at a greater risk</a> of developing non-fatty liver disease. <p>Losing weight can be incredibly challenging and people will often try several diets before landing on one that helps them drop pounds in a consistent and sustainable manner.</p>
<p>In fact, the findings from <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" href="https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/databriefs/db389-H.pdf" target="_blank">a report released</a> by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2020 revealed that 17% of Americans were on diets during the 2017-2018 survey period—up 14% from the decade prior. Yet, the national obesity rate <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3228640/" target="_blank">rose from 34%</a> to 42% over that <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" href="https://www.cdc.gov/obesity/data/adult.html" target="_blank">same time period</a>.</p>
<p>Now, new research out of the University of Illinois in Chicago suggests that intermittent fasting (IF) could promote significant weight loss and even improve metabolic health in those who have obesity.</p>
<p>&#8220;People love intermittent fasting because it&#8217;s easy. People need to find diets that they can stick to long term. It&#8217;s definitely effective for weight loss and it&#8217;s gained popularity because there are no special foods or apps necessary. You can also combine it with other diets, like Keto,&#8221; Krista Varady, professor of nutrition at the UIC College of Applied Health Sciences and study author said <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" href="https://today.uic.edu/research-review-shows-intermittent-fasting-works-for-weight-loss-health-changes" target="_blank">in a statement</a>.</p>
<p>RELATED: Sleeping This Much Could Increase Your Risk of Obesity, Study Finds</p>
<p>The review, which was published in the <em><a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" href="https://www.annualreviews.org/doi/10.1146/annurev-nutr-052020-041327" target="_blank">Annual Review of Nutrition</a></em>, analyzed 25 research studies involving three types of IF. These included the following:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Alternate day fasting:</strong> You alternate between one feast day and one fast day. On the fasting day, you only consume one, 500-calorie meal.</li>
<li><strong>5:2 diet:</strong> This type of IF calls for five feast days and two fast days per week.</li>
<li><strong>Time-restricted eating:</strong> This method doesn&#8217;t involve calorie restrictions, but you do have to shorten your eating window to anywhere between four and 10 hours a day. Then, you fast outside of that eating window.</li>
</ul>
<p>Of the studies examined, many showed that time-restricted eating allowed participants with obesity to lose an average of 3% of their body weight—no matter the length of their eating window. On the other hand, those who participated in alternate-day fasting<strong> dropped 3%-8% of their body weight</strong> over a three to eight-week period.</p>
<p>Surprisingly, those who did the 5:2 diet had comparable weight loss results with those who did alternate-day fasting, despite having fewer fasting periods.</p>
<p>Overall, the percentage of weight participants lost following these two types of IF diets compare to the results one may achieve by following a traditional, calorie-restrictive diet. The best part? Participants who did both of these fasting diets kept the weight off, maintaining an average of 7% weight loss for a whole year.</p>
<p><strong>Bottom line: </strong>The study doesn&#8217;t suggest that IF is more effective than traditional dieting. Instead, it shows that it may be just as effective, so if you hate cutting calories on a daily basis, consider giving either alternate day or 5:2 fasting a try!</p>

<p>Fact: Sitting too much, in any form, is bad for your body. When you sit for too long, science has shown that you’re setting yourself on the path to weight gain, back and shoulder pain, poorer mental health, less quality sleep, and dangerous chronic conditions such as heart disease. But according to a new review of health studies overseen by Wuyou Sui, Ph.D., a kinesiologist at Western University—and soon to be published in the journal <em><a href="http://sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1469029221000388?via%3Dihub">Psychology of Sport and Exercise</a>—</em>there are indeed different ways you can be sitting, and some are better than others. Read on for more of what these scientists uncovered and how it applies to your own body and your overall sense of wellbeing. And if you fear that you’re living an overly sedentary lifestyle, make sure you’re aware of The One Major Side Effect of Sitting on the Couch Too Much, According to a New Study.</p>
<p></p>
<p><noscript><img class="lazyload alignnone size-medium wp-image-528995 " decoding="async" src="https://healyourhealthyourself.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/1617660240_918_The-Single-Worst-Way-to-Sit-for-Your-Body-Says.jpg" alt="happy woman after a workout" data-recalc-dims="1"/></noscript></p>
<p>The review of studies focused on the <em>context</em> in which people lived a sedentary lifestyle, and specifically how those habits “correlated with a poorer hedonic well-being.” In other words, their research focuses on how we sit influences our sense of wellbeing—“an individual’s own evaluation of their quality of life,” according to the study—and how those feelings of satisfaction can impact our health overall. After all, how we view ourselves, the scientists say, will influence the decisions we make every day for the sake of our health. “Evaluating subjective well-being is vital for painting a holistic picture of health,” explains Sui.</p>
<p><img class="lazyload alignnone size-medium wp-image-521421 " decoding="async" src="https://healyourhealthyourself.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/1617660241_27_The-Single-Worst-Way-to-Sit-for-Your-Body-Says.jpg" alt="Happy woman sitting on a couch" width="640" /></p>
<p><noscript><img class="lazyload alignnone size-medium wp-image-521421 " decoding="async" src="https://healyourhealthyourself.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/1617660241_600_The-Single-Worst-Way-to-Sit-for-Your-Body-Says.jpg" alt="Happy woman sitting on a couch" data-recalc-dims="1"/></noscript></p>
<p>The scientists note that the type of sitting most associated with a greater—and healthier—sense of wellbeing was sitting around other people and engaging in conversation, or while doing something else that is otherwise productive or fulfilling. “Time spent sitting while socializing, or playing an instrument, or reading demonstrated positive associations with outcomes of well-being,” says the study. “These findings highlight the importance in considering the context or domain of [sedentary behavior] as it relates to [your sense of] well-being.” And for more ways to boost your mood, check out our list of 50 Foods That Will Make You Look and Feel Better.</p>
<figure id="463590" class="alignnone"><img class="lazyload alignnone size-medium wp-image-463590 " decoding="async" src="https://healyourhealthyourself.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/1617660241_62_The-Single-Worst-Way-to-Sit-for-Your-Body-Says.jpg" alt="selective focus of depressed african american man sitting with bowed head" width="640" /><noscript><img class="lazyload alignnone size-medium wp-image-463590 " decoding="async" src="https://healyourhealthyourself.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/1617660241_295_The-Single-Worst-Way-to-Sit-for-Your-Body-Says.jpg" alt="selective focus of depressed african american man sitting with bowed head" data-recalc-dims="1"/></noscript><figcaption class="wp-caption-text"><span class="credit">Shutterstock</span></figcaption></figure>
<p>The study also found that, in terms of life satisfaction, the amount of time you sit or choose not to sit is entirely relative and unique to you. There is no firm amount of time that applies to everyone. “How much an individual sits relative to how much they usually sit may have a greater impact on their [sense of] well-being than the total amount of sitting they do,” observes the study.</p>
<p>So if you know that you’re sitting less than you usually do, it’s a bonus, and you’ll have stronger feelings of positivity and life satisfaction.</p>
<figure id="464232" class="alignnone"><img class="lazyload alignnone size-medium wp-image-464232 " decoding="async" src="https://healyourhealthyourself.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/1617660241_342_The-Single-Worst-Way-to-Sit-for-Your-Body-Says.jpg" alt="Man with broken arm in plaster cast holding controller and playing in videogame in front of TV." width="640" /><noscript><img class="lazyload alignnone size-medium wp-image-464232 " decoding="async" src="https://healyourhealthyourself.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/1617660241_413_The-Single-Worst-Way-to-Sit-for-Your-Body-Says.jpg" alt="Man with broken arm in plaster cast holding controller and playing in videogame in front of TV." data-recalc-dims="1"/></noscript><figcaption class="wp-caption-text"><span class="credit">Shutterstock</span></figcaption></figure>
<p>“Our results revealed that increased screen time (e.g., TV, using computers) was typically associated with poorer hedonic well-being,” concludes the study. So not all forms of sitting are created equal, and you spend most of your time sitting simply watching TV or playing video games, the science says you’ll feel worse about yourself, which can adversely affect your health down the road. And for more news from the cutting edge of scientific research, make sure you&#8217;re aware of the One Major Side Effect of Going on a 1-Hour Walk, According to New Science.</p>
