All jobs bear some level of stress — however, nursing is undoubtedly at the top of the list as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has worsened job burnout, mental health and staff shortages during peak patient hospitalizations.

An August 2021 report by the American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL) found that 75% of nurses list their emotional health as a significant challenge amid the pandemic — nearly 25% higher than the previous year.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, another 2020 survey found that 68% of nurses put a patient’s health and safety above their own, despite the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Nurses mandating all nurses adopt a self-care regimen.

As nursing becomes one of the most coveted professions — 194,500 openings are projected annually by 2030 — dealing with job burnout is more critical than ever. Here are five important self-care tips for nurses.

1. Add Self-Care to Your Calendar

A calendar is a nurse’s best tool for setting aside time for self-care. Penciling in “me time” to focus on your mental health is necessary and well-deserved.

Look at your schedule and make an effort to work no more than nine hours per shift, demanding breaks and limited overtime when you can. You might also consider requesting time off to recharge, perhaps on an extended weekend getaway or the spa.

If you’re worried about how taking a few days for your mental health might affect your fellow nurses, ask around in advance if doing so would impede their work.

2. Practice Saying “No”

Depending on who you are, setting boundaries for yourself might empower you or make you feel slightly uncomfortable. For nurses especially, saying “no” often feels out of the question.

Yet, people are incapable of doing everything, despite society’s perception of nurses’ superpowers. Learning to say no when your plate is already full is important for improving your mental health.

For example, a three-month screening from June to September 2020 found that 49% of respondents felt most stressed from heavy or increased workloads. Considering cases of disease and death have skyrocketed in recent years, prolonged feelings of burnout and tension could lead to a decline in physical and emotional health, disrupted sleep and poor work performance.

3. Start A New Hobby

On your days off, take up a new hobby or try something new, like a class or new recipe, that sparks joy and relaxes you. There are endless possibilities, including:

Painting and pottery

Writing and journaling

Dancing

Cooking classes

Gardening

Photography

Scrapbooking

Meditation and yoga

Group activities are also a great way to socialize with other people outside work. Going to sports events with friends, attending gatherings or volunteering for an important cause beyond your profession — such as cleaning up local parks or visiting shelter animals — can make you feel happier.

Research suggests that petting a dog or cat for just 10 minutes significantly decreases cortisol levels and reduces anxiety.

4. Unplug

Society tends to have trouble disconnecting from their phones and computers — however, unplugging can help you unwind from a stressful day.

Try turning off your phone when you leave work and limit how much television you watch at night. Wanting to know what’s happening in the world is normal, but news about the pandemic, war and social injustices is likely to elevate your worry. In a survey by MattressAdvisor.com, 57% of Americans can’t watch the evening news because it affects their sleep.

Instead, read a good book or concentrate on your physical health. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), 43% of American adults exercise for stress management — of this, 62% say walking is the most effective method for boosting their mood and reducing anxiety.

Rather than coming home and flipping on the television, turn your phone on silent mode and put on your walking shoes for a stroll.

5. Speak To A Therapist

Speaking to a therapist when practicing self-care can help improve your quality of life and make you better at your job.

Following the height of COVID-19, you may feel traumatized by what you witnessed or endured. A recent study showed that 53.9% of nurses feel intense helplessness, compassion and sadness around the death of a patient.

Research demonstrates the effectiveness of speaking to a professional about your feelings, anxiety and traumas. In fact, the American Psychiatric Association states that 75% of therapy patients see improvements in their emotional well-being. They also tend to take fewer sick days and boost their job satisfaction.

Implement A Self-Care Routine To Beat Job Burnout

Self-care is essential for maintaining positive mental health, especially since nursing is emotionally and physically taxing. How do you expect to show up for your patients if you don’t take care of yourself first? Start small with your self-care routine until you’re comfortable making yourself the priority.

2022 is here. Are you ready? Have you decided on your New Year’s resolution yet? No? That’s ok. Neither have millions of others, besides, who do you know that sticks to them anyway? If I had $1 for every broken resolution I’ve made, I’d have retired by now.

Do you at least have a 2022 wish list or bucket list? The best thing about a bucket list is that you can continue to add to it anytime you wish. My wish list is simple…it starts with health and happiness for myself and my loved ones. This got me thinking, what is happiness? For everyone it is different and personal. So this is, I think, a universal list of wishes:

Food on our tables

A roof over our heads

Drink more water

Eat more raw foods

Get more sleep

Spend quality time with your family

Spend quality alone time with yourself

Laugh more

Hug lots

Treating others as we wish to be treated

It’s a very simple list, but I know that the majority of people reading this will struggle to fulfil it. It’s called self care. People have differing views on self care. Some understand the importance of it, others think it’s about being selfish and indulgent. I don’t blame them, when it was first mentioned to me I didn’t have a clue what it really meant. To be honest I thought it was all about washing, brushing my teeth, eating, sleeping that sort of self care. Once I was told what it really was and what I should do to achieve it, I thought it was selfishness.

“I can hardly wait for tomorrow, it means a new life for me each and every day.” – Stanley Kunitz

Once I actually got a grasp on it and started to apply it to my life, I started to wonder how I got through before. To start with you do need to think a little selfish but without acting it. It really is all about ME. What do I need to do to live life healthier and happier? To be able to give the best of myself to others without losing or disrespecting myself in the meantime.

Here are a few ways you can practice self care this year:

1. Are you a YES person?

Learn not to automatically say yes to requests, actually take the time to think about it first. If you are saying no deep down, be honest and say no upfront. At the end of the day, we are all expendable. When your life is coming to an end, nobody is going to say ‘she was a great girl , she never said no to anyone. The world will not end if you say no to something or someone. If you are a ‘yes’ person, this will be your hardest lesson to learn.

2. Learn to like your own company

You also need to learn to like your own company, really get to know yourself. What makes you happy, sad, excited? What really makes your blood run? These first two steps go hand in hand. Accomplish them and you are already halfway to practicing self care correctly.

3. Declutter

Declutter, yes you heard me. A clear desk, cupboard, wardrobe, etc. helps clear the mind. Last year I moved house, now I wasn’t a hoarder, but a collector. I can’t begin to tell you how much I recycled to charity or tossed to the garbage but it was freeing. Try it! Start off simple. Pick one room in the house and go through all areas of storage. Not only will you feel good for doing it, if you can donate a lot of what you’re clearing, then you will feel even better for helping others.

“The first step in crafting the life you want is to get rid of everything you don’t.” – Joshua Becker

4. Revisit something you are good at

It may be a hobby that you haven’t pursued for years. Maybe you wrote poetry when you were a teenager, or you can draw, knit, paint. Whatever it was, find the time to do it again. You will be amazed what a stress buster it can be.

5. Remember to take a lunch break

The easiest thing to do is take your lunch break. We are all guilty of eating at our desks or on the run. Stop, grab your lunch, and eat it away from your workspace. Take a walk around the block once you’ve eaten. Take the time to step away for some instant ‘me’ time. Once again, no one pays you extra to work through your lunch hour.

6. Put yourself first from time to time

Finally, light that candle, buy your favourite bottle of wine and enjoy. It is never too late and you are never too old to start putting you first in everything you do. Trust me, once you do, you’ll thank me. The interesting part is, you will come through as a more content, relaxed and happier person.

It’s your turn. It’s time to make 2022 the year of YOU. What are you going to do to show yourself more self care? Leave your thoughts below!

Stress-relieving activities may not be sufficient to capitalize on time and energy. Becoming a productive being will demand a self-care routine that combines physical, mental, and emotional health. Breathing exercises and nature walks are a few ways of mental relief tactics that can work for anyone.

There are other ways of achieving effective self-care without overwhelming our bodies. The secret is to make ourselves the prime factor in any aspect of production. Below are reasons why self-care is our secret weapon to productivity. Don’t just leave yet: we’ve saved the best for last.

Self-Care May Boost Physical Health

Physical health tops our list of reasons why we should be keen on the importance of self care for productivity. For instance, how can players be expected to perform at their peak if they are exerting themselves during training? A whole week of training with more than 3 games is an overwhelming routine, and self-pampering does not always result in our expectations.

When we work in a stressful environment, our body muscles tense as a defensive mechanism. Unfortunately, constant stress will not relax our physique, and the muscle tension may result in headaches, back pain, and overall body pain. Before turning to medication, try out self-caring techniques that can positively impact our mood.

Self-Care Improves Mental Health

How does mental health impact productivity? Mindset is one of the fundamental ingredients of our lives. Utilizing productivity apps helps to control anxiety in the management process at work.

We all enjoy working, but operating under duress can lower our productivity. Self care for productivity will undoubtedly save the day and improve our mental health. After all, we need mental health to work and attain our objectives.

No More Early Morning Phone Scroll

We mostly spend the majority of time on our phones or in front of computers. For us to have a positive impact on productivity, we must adjust our routine. Make it a habit not to pick up a phone first thing in the morning. Instead, we should develop a morning routine in which we prioritize our mental health above electronic gadgets. Again, we should take this opportunity to do something for ourselves, even if it’s for a few minutes.

How to Make a Productive Move

Occasionally, we get involved in things that lower our self-esteem. We need to learn to let go. As entrepreneurial beings, we make lists of the objectives that need full attention. To some degree, we find ourselves lacking time for holidays or retreats, all in the name of hard work. In thus doing, we live up to the mantra, “all work, no play!”

Who said tormenting ourselves with complex ambitions is a sign of triumph? Stop what you’re doing and take a break. A peaceful lifestyle is like medicine, and letting go of a few things may just be the antidote.

“Love yourself first, and everything else falls in line. You really have to love yourself to get anything done in this world.” – Lucille Ball

Enough Sleeps Means We Care

When we get enough night’s sleep, we feel invigorated and ready to tackle the challenges of the day. Sleep improves energy and concentration. So, in return, we feel more productive. On the other hand, lack of sleep leads to mental and physical disorders.

The productivity definition differs from hard work. What do we mean? We can work the whole day, but without efficiency, we’re just wasting our energy. We Americans are well known for overworking to pay the bills. Eventually, many citizens suffer from hypertension and diabetes, but we can get back on our feet through self-care techniques.

Make Sure to Establish Limits

How often do we devote our time to self-care? Turning off our phones doesn’t always imply that we’re impolite. All we desire is a few minutes, if not hours, of peace of mind. At the workplace, we can choose to decline any last-minute meeting invitation.

If our schedule reads, “go camping with the family,” go, and have fun. Should anything come up that presents a conflict of interests, simply decline the offer politely. After all, we are exercising self-health tactics that can boost production and decision-making as we build on family bonds.

How to Increase Productivity Using Self-Care Tricks

If we want to manage our time correctly, we need to get serious. It’s hard to master self-care techniques, but others may think of it as a sign of laziness. Being more productive has a lot to do with treating ourselves rather than pressuring ourselves to work more. With that in mind, consider the following ways for dealing with efficiency guilt.

1. How to Carry Out the Daily To-Do List

So, what exactly are we discussing? Let’s start by giving an excellent example of how to increase productivity ambition. We all need necessities to survive. Luckily we have them, and that’s why we’re still alive. On the other hand, we are overburdening ourselves with a list of luxurious things that are unachievable in a single day. Avoid stress and stick to the primary listing; after all, there is tomorrow.

2. Keeping Track of What to Achieve Within a Given Day

Think about this move for a moment. Here we create a to-do list with roughly 20 smaller sections. Solving half of the matter on the table is an achievement, and the leftover tasks or items will inspire the following day. That’s how to generate a productive listing.

3. Decide When to Pursue the Goal

Early preparation can heighten self-care confidence.

“He who is best prepared can best serve his moment of inspiration, “Samuel Taylor.

If we are to succeed in our goals, we need a minimum of 5 days to plan and rethink. With a deadline ahead, we can lessen the productivity guilt.

Conclusion

Most of the time, self-care has a few repercussions. The productivity guilt can make us second-guess our decision. Letting go of some things is a sign of self-care. With peace of mind, our physical and mental elements can better make wise decisions. Maximizing our time with less effort requires a change in our daily routine.

A question to our readers: How often do we abandon our goals in the pursuit of happiness? We’d love to keep the conversation going in the comments!

Life can feel fast-paced at times, and it’s easy to get swept along and forget to nurture your health. Neglecting yourself is not a wise choice though, because it can zap both your energy and your motivation. So instead, try these top self-care strategies to look and feel your best.

Get Your Sleep

The top item on your self-care list should be getting enough quality sleep. Inadequate sleep can damage your health in a myriad of ways, including:

Increasing your risk of cardiac disease

Elevating your inflammation levels

Reducing your immunity

Causing issues with weight control

Lowering your level of energy

Impairing your focus

Increasing your chances for depression and anxiety

To ensure you get the sleep you need to feel your best, try to schedule at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night. Make your bedroom as conducive to sleep as possible by ensuring the room is dark, cool, and relaxing. Also, try to avoid exposure to blue light later in the day, and limit your intake of caffeine and alcohol, as well. Finally, consider taking a magnesium complex supplement to help you relax and get the sleep you need to feel your best.

Stay Physically Active

When your job involves staring at a computer all day, your physical health and mental wellbeing can suffer. A sedentary lifestyle increases your odds for cardiac disease, chronic illness, arthritis, and weight gain. It can also take a toll on your mental health, increasing your odds for both depression and anxiety.

To feel your best, consciously choose to exercise on a regular basis. Experts recommend that you aim for at least 75 minutes of vigorous exercise or 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week. As long as you can reach your target rate, the type of exercise is not critical. Instead, it’s more important to choose something you love so that you can successfully maintain a regular workout routine.

You can also integrate movement in small ways throughout your day. For example, use a standing desk and make a point of walking whenever you are on the phone. Also, sneak in steps by parking further from your destination and opt for the stairs rather than riding an elevator.

Take A Breath And Relax

It is becoming increasingly clear that taking time to calm your mind can have a plethora of advantages for your health. One option is to spend a few minutes each day doing breathing exercises, such as belly breathing, alternate nostril breathing, or resonant breathing.

Alternatively, consider starting a meditation practice. Meditating helps you gain control of your breath and your mind. Not only can it help you feel more centered and peaceful, but it can also help you become more mindful and better able to control the direction of your thoughts.

Being deliberate about self-care can go a long way towards helping you feel your best. By making sure you get enough sleep, scheduling regular physical activity, and using relaxation techniques, you will find yourself better equipped to tackle anything that life throws your way.

Everyone needs at least one day of the week to recharge for the days ahead.

If Sunday is a day off for you—and the days afterward are not—a self-care Sunday could change everything.

Whatever day you pick, though, you now have our list of 29 self-care day ideas to choose from.

Plan your self-care day ahead of time to give yourself something to look forward to.

And don’t be afraid to try something new.

What is Self-Care Sunday?

For many of us, Sunday is the day that sets up the whole week. It’s the day before we go back to work or school (or both). So, it makes sense to keep a list of your favorite self-care things to do.

If you’re still on the fence, consider what a weekly self-care day could do for you:

Give you a chance to honor needs neglected over the past week.

Restore energy for the week ahead

Help you manage stress by providing an outlet and a chance to relax.

Improve your relationships with others

Help prevent burnout and boost overall well-being

Self-care isn’t selfishness. It’s not about making a habit of putting your needs ahead of everyone else’s. The plain truth is you can’t pour from an empty cup. You need to fill your own tank before you can tend to the needs of others.

How will you fill your tank this week?

29 of the Best Self-Care Sunday Ideas

Get ready to transform your Sunday routine by adding any combination of the following self-care activities. Look through the list and choose some favorites, along with something new.

1. Turn off your alarm.

If there’s ever a time to turn off your morning alarm and catch up on your sleep, it’s Self-Care Sunday. If you don’t want to sleep in too late, consider setting your alarm at least an hour later.

2. Write in your journal.

Take at least a few minutes to check in with yourself by writing in your journal. Give your noisiest thoughts an outlet, so you can make sense of the noise and think more clearly.

3. Curl up with a book.

You know that book you’ve been wanting to read but haven’t had time for? This is the day to carve out some time to sit in your comfiest chair and do some reading—just for fun.

4. Write a story of your own.

If you enjoy creative writing and want to craft binge-able stories of your own, Self-Care Sunday is a great time to start your next epic tale and get acquainted with its characters.

5. Make time for meditation.

Whatever type of meditation you prefer, make meditation one of your top Sunday morning activities to get your head into the best space for whatever comes next. You don’t have to be an expert to reap the benefits.

6. Do some yoga.

Use an app or find a YouTube video with an instructor you like. Go to a room where you can move through the routine without spectators or interruptions. Even a few minutes of yoga stretching can do wonders.

7. Take a long, therapeutic soak.

If you like baths, gather your favorite bath accessories—bath salts, loofah, essential oils, candles, music, etc.—and make time for a long, restorative soak. For extra credit, prepare a soothing drink to enjoy.

8. Use a face mask.

If you’re like me, you have a few of these in your bathroom drawer. Prepare with your favorite skin cleanser and apply the mask, waiting 15 to 20 minutes before gently peeling or rinsing it off.

9. Create a home spa.

Go beyond a simple face mask by creating an at-home spa experience involving any combination of skincare treatments. Finish with a moisturizer that nourishes and hydrates your skin from head to toe.

10. Take a nature walk.

Get outside for fresh air and exercise and take in the sights. Enjoy the variety of trees or whatever nature you have in your neighborhood. You can even walk somewhere new and do some exploring.

11. Learn a new relaxing hobby.

Check out this list of 21 relaxing hobbies to try—or spend time on one you already enjoy but haven’t had time for during the week. Do something that lowers your blood pressure and helps you feel at peace.

12. Try a new recipe.

This Sunday is the day to try that new recipe you’ve been curious about—or figure out how to prepare your own Indian food buffet. Bake your favorite cookies and share some (but not all).

13. Watch a favorite movie.

Pick out a favorite movie and prepare your favorite movie snacks and a soothing drink. Self-care Sunday doesn’t have to be productive. The goal here is fun and relaxation. Choose a feel-good movie for the best results.

14. Play a (new) favorite video game.

If you love playing video games—or you live with someone who does—you can spend some time learning how to play or brushing up on your gaming skills. Just make sure it’s more fun than stressful.

15. Shop for something fun.

You can shop online or visit a favorite store. Start with something you know you enjoy looking at (electronics, books, shoes, etc.) and browse to your heart’s content. Think of it as research or idea-gathering.

16. Hang out in a local bookstore.

Browse the bookshelves or look through the magazine selection. Find a comfy chair and do some reading. If the bookstore has a coffee shop, treat yourself to something soothing.

17. Spend some time in the sun.

Soak up some vitamin D by spending some time outside—walking, sunbathing, or going on a picnic. Find a spot where you can take a moment just to enjoy the warmth of the sun’s rays.

18. Go on a trip—or plan one.

If you don’t already do enough driving during the week, a road trip might be just the thing. Otherwise, you can research travel options and plan your next dream vacation.

19. Light a candle (or a few).

If you find candles relaxing, light a few where you can see them and enjoy the glow. Woodwick candles make a faint crackling sound you might enjoy. Play it safe and burn each candle for four hours at the most.

20. Tidy up your space.

For many of us, a clutter-free home is more relaxing than a messy one. Tidying up doesn’t have to take a massive amount of time or energy, and the payoff is something you can enjoy during the week.

21. Plan your week.

Getting your week all sketched out—at least roughly—can help you feel more on top of things, which allows you to manage stress and feel better about the days ahead.

22. Get a good night’s sleep.

Retire early to get a good eight hours or more of restful slumber before you wake up for your Monday morning routine. Your brain and body will thank you for the chance to heal while you sleep.

23. Plant something.

Weather permitting, you can plant something outside— in a garden or a planting container. Indoor gardening is also an option, whether you’re growing kitchen herbs or propagating houseplants.

24. Delegate a dreaded task.

If doing the laundry is something you dread, consider delegating it to someone else in exchange for a task they dread but that you don’t mind so much (maybe sweeping the floor or preparing a meal).

25. Indulge in a favorite food.

This could be a meal, a snack, or a dessert. Order in or go out to enjoy a meal with family or friends. Don’t forget to tip the person delivering your food. They make this kind of fun possible.

26. Spend some time with a favorite person.

Make time to connect with someone you love (or multiple someones) and enjoy a meaningful conversation with them. Or, if you’re both all talked out, enjoy some companionable silence together.

27. Write a letter to someone you love.

Treat someone you love to a written letter updating them on your life and checking in on theirs. Use fancy stationery or basic printer paper. What you write on it is what matters.

28. Enjoy some laughter therapy.

Watch, read, or listen to something that makes you laugh, especially if your week is generally laughter-free. Laughter’s healing benefits include better heart and respiratory health and improved body chemistry and brain function.

29. Listen to your favorite music.

Enjoy a favorite playlist—either as background music or an excuse to try some new dance moves. Bonus points if you sing along or play along on a musical instrument of your own.

Now that you’ve seen all 29 Self-care Sunday ideas, which ones stood out for you? And what will you do differently next Sunday?

There are many paths, goals, intentions, and different ways to approach the practice of yoga. The ancient yogis originally used it as a form of meditation and path of enlightenment. Now, most people practice to increase strength and flexibility, reduce stress and anxiety, and boost energy levels. Besides being an effective mind-body workout, yoga also provides several ways to promote self-care. If you are feeling worn out, emotionally exhausted, and mentally fatigued, a few minutes of yoga might be the key to find balance, ease, and connection that is lacking in your life.

What is self-care?

Self-care is taking care of ourselves in positive ways that improve our health, enhance our well-being, and improve our ability to cope with life’s challenges. Self-care is any type of physical, mental, or spiritual activity you do for yourself that can help you feel better, healthier, and have more energy.

Self-care is an integral part of living a healthy and balanced life. It is a vital component of wellness, and it helps us become better parents, employees, friends, and better people overall. Self-care practices keep us in balance and allow us to be our best selves. It is an essential component to prevent emotional exhaustion, burnout, and apathy.

What is yoga for self-care?

Self-care is arguably the most important aspect of your health and well-being, but making time for yourself can be difficult, especially since it can feel selfish and indulgent to do things that make us feel good. Yoga is an amazing self-care tool as it can improve and promote compassion, kindness, and love to give ourselves permission to take care of our needs. It can provide the awareness, contemplation, and introspection to uncover your genuine needs. A consistent practice can also give insight on how to creatively and effectively address these needs.

A 2015 study reaffirmed the power of yoga for self-care, with yoga participants reporting “significantly higher self-care as well as less emotional exhaustion and depersonalization upon completion of an 8-week yoga intervention” while the control group showed no change. The yoga group showed a significant improvement in their scores for self-care, mindfulness, emotional exhaustion, and depersonalization after their classes.

Yoga tools for self-care

There are several simple ways that you can use yoga to enhance your mental, physical, spiritual, and social wellbeing. The power of yoga for self-care is that it creates an easy and sustainable habit, is holistic and balanced approach to wellness, and strengthens our emotional resilience so that we can easily deal with difficult circumstances to prevent stress and burnout.

1. Reduce stress to promote wellness

Multiple studies have linked stress with many health problems, including heart disease, high blood pressure, depression, insomnia, weight gain, and more. Stress reduction techniques, like breathing exercises, guided imagery, mindfulness practices, and yoga, all work together to lower stress in our bodies. Practicing these methods regularly is the most effective way to feel calmer and happier.

Feeling too much stress is a sign that something isn’t right in your life–whether physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, or socially. If you’re feeling stressed out, there are several yoga techniques to create calm and inner peace. While yoga techniques can greatly reduce stress, make sure you are not using them as a band-aid over deeper life issues.

Practice pranayama. Breathing deeply decreases anxiety and increases relaxation. This technique works because it allows oxygen into your bloodstream and triggers endorphins, which produce feelings of happiness and contentment. Incorporate basic diaphragmatic breathing in your practice and throughout your day. If you are feeling especially frazzled, practice a few minutes of Sama Vritti or Nadi Sodhana Pranayama.

Meditate. Meditation reduces levels of cortisol, a hormone associated with stress, by increasing alpha waves in the brain. When you meditate, focus only on your thoughts and sensations without judgment. Meditation helps people cope better with stressful situations because they learn to control their emotions rather than letting them run wild. Try a calming practice like our inner peace meditation or our heart chakra meditation.

Practice calming yoga poses. Calming poses, such as forward folding positions and upper backbends, reduce muscle tension, calm the nervous system, and promote restful sleep. They also help decrease stress hormones, like adrenaline and cortisol.

Incorporate gratitude. At the start or end of your practice, think of three things you’re grateful for or remember three positive experiences of your day. Doing this shifts you into a positive mindset instead of dwelling on negative thoughts. Gratitude is one of the easiest practices to bring joy and happiness to your life. Explore several other ways to bring gratitude into your yoga practice.

2. Boost physical health and immunity

Regular practice of asana and pranayama builds muscular strength and increases your immune system’s ability to fight off colds and flu viruses. Regular exercise improves cardiovascular function, muscle tone, bone density, flexibility, strength, coordination, posture, and endurance. All of this leads to improved quality of sleep, reduced risk of injury, and increased energy levels.

A yogic lifestyle also promotes a healthy diet, which includes plenty of fruits and vegetables, along with whole grains, lean protein sources, and low-fat dairy products. This way of eating supports optimal digestion and absorption of nutrients into the body.

3. Create emotional balance

Yoga and meditation teach us the importance of being present and mindful during stressful situations. When practicing this form of meditation, we learn to focus only on the here and now without getting caught up in past experiences or future worries. We become aware of our thoughts and emotions and begin to understand them instead of reacting to them. By becoming conscious of our feelings, we can choose which ones to act upon and which ones to let go of.

In addition, by focusing on our breath, we develop an awareness of our body and its sensations. This helps us recognize where tension exists within our muscles, allowing us to release any built-up energy. Regular asana practice improves cardiovascular function and circulation, reduces fatigue, builds muscle tone, and burns calories. All of this contributes to improved mood and increased vitality.

4. Strengthen social connections

Practicing self-care doesn’t have to mean sitting alone in silence. Your well-being depends on deep connections and healthy relationships with others. Regularly attending a yoga class is an easy way to put time and energy into building new and maintaining established relationships. Being a regular at a yoga studio also gives you the opportunity to connect with a like-minded social community.

5. Find spiritual connection and higher purpose

Practice yoga asana and pranayama to connect with yourself spiritually through meditation. Meditation involves sitting quietly and concentrating on one thing, such as your breath or mantra. You may find inspiration in nature when meditating outside. If you’re not comfortable doing this alone, consider joining a group practice. Many studios offer classes specifically designed to promote spirituality, or consider visiting an ashram for a deeper spiritual experience.

How to practice yoga for self-care: 5 steps

There are many ways to incorporate self-care into your daily routine. Use these tips to make sure they happen regularly so you don’t neglect your own health. Here are five easy steps to take when incorporating self-care into your life.

Step 1 – Reflect on your needs

Before you start taking care of yourself, it’s important that you know what exactly is throwing you off balance in your life and what it is that makes you feel good. Finding balance and wellness may require letting go of unhealthy patterns and relationships. It could require adding or changing something physical, mental, or spiritual. Make sure you reflect on everything and every aspect of your life! Once you’ve identified these things, make a list and note which are the most enjoyable, effective, and beneficial.

Step 2 – Set an intention of self-care

Once you know what you need to add or subtract from your routine, you can create one or more simple affirmations or intentions to use as powerful reminders of your goals. For example, “may I spend more time meditating” or “I am open to receiving friendship and connection at the yoga studio.” Make these statements powerful and inspirational, and post them at home where you can see them often.

Step 3 – Plan ahead

If you are to be successful in achieving your goals, planning out how much time you will spend on self-care should be done beforehand. Examine your day-to-day schedule, and set aside some time each day or several times a week to do those activities. Remember that allocating specific amounts of time does not always guarantee success. However, setting up a plan helps keep you motivated and focused.

Step 4 – Start small

Start off slowly. Don’t expect to change overnight. You may find yourself feeling overwhelmed or discouraged if you try too hard right away. Take baby steps by starting out slow. Try one new thing at a time until you feel comfortable enough to add another activity to your schedule.

Step 5 – Assess how you’re caring for yourself

Make note of what is working to bring more care and nourishment into your life. Let yourself reflect on these successes to fuel your motivation to continue with your routine. If you’re not enjoying anything about your day, reassess and make some changes. Keep trying different options until you get it right. Fortunately, there are many other articles on yoga for self-care that you can explore and experiment with their recommendations.

Conclusion

Self-care isn’t always easy to initiate, but it doesn’t have to be difficult either. When we put our well-being first, we become healthier people who enjoy their lives even more than before. We all deserve to live happy, healthy lives, and we must remember that we are worthy and deserving of a bit of self-care time every day. Yoga is an excellent option to fulfill many, if not all, of your needs for care and wellbeing.

Solitude and self-care have become a commodity. Markets are trying to sell us face-packs that can restore blemishes on our skin and mental imbalance. Ridiculously expensive “silent retreats” with their life-changing testimonials drive us to believe this is what we need to live a better life. There’s a special tea you should drink during your “me time.” This overpriced bath salt will help you get a life-altering meditative bath.

I often wondered if solitude and self-care are just a capitalistic fad with no gains for me. It sounded like something only pseudo-spiritual gurus would advise. I detested spending time alone and considered it a waste of my time. The real truth was introspection was terrifying. Spending time alone with my thoughts sent a shiver down my spine. I turned many stones to never run out of company.

But all of it had to change when I moved for college and began to live with my extended family. They had demanding jobs that didn’t allow them to come home before dinner. And my classes were lax – I could manage to get good grades by only going twice a week. This bound me to spend my days alone in a quiet two-bedroom flat.

This time, there was no running away from my thoughts. You can only watch so much TV to drown out the noise of your own brain, you know? But in a few months, my loneliness converted to solitude. It wasn’t easy. I was often lonely. I had to sit and make peace with my own self, tackle the monster of my self-reflection, and gain a forced self-awareness that only solitude can bring about.

Now, I guard my time alone with a fierce force. It is non-negotiable and necessary to maintain my sanity. And it is no surprise that I am happier than I had ever been before. Company is still frequent, but I have the audacity (and craving) to shut my door.

“If you feel “burnout” setting in, if you feel demoralized and exhausted, it is best, for the sake of everyone, to withdraw and restore yourself.” – Dalai Lama

It is not just that solitude helps you increase concentration, productivity, and self-awareness. I believe it is a radical act of self-care. Finding time alone with the stimulation of the technology devices we have amidst us is challenging. It is not only out of comfort-zones, so many times it is also out of reach. How much easier it is to just keep texting, watching, emailing when you’re alone rather than just being with yourself and not doing anything? I get it. I have been there – it gets hard to prioritize “me time” when there’s so much on your plate.

Here are 3 ways you can create time alone – even if you have a jam-packed calendar:

1. Weekend Disconnect

I set time aside each day to turn off my phone, my laptop, and my brain. But I know it is not possible on some days. Life can be demanding. Work gets too much, or my family needs attention. The way out is to make time on the weekends to disconnect. It might be only one day, but that day would be non-negotiable. It is much easier to find time once a day in the week to disconnect rather than to find time every day. This time is for you to unplug. No notifications, no work, no distractions. You can do anything you like with this time – wander around the block, nap, write, paint, etc. You create a space of silence where you can hear yourself.

2. Get Up For You

Getting up early is a goldmine of getting things done. Instead of getting up earlier only when there’s a big presentation at work, get up earlier for yourself. Just half an hour to yourself every morning can do miracles. You can also sleep a little later to carve out this time, but I’d recommend the early mornings rather than the late nights. Don’t check your phone, laptop, or emails at this time. Completely unplug. If some nagging problem’s solution comes to you at this hour, I wouldn’t be surprised. Solitude does wonders for all kinds of inner and outer dragons.

“When you recover or discover something that nourishes your soul and brings joy, care enough about yourself to make room for it in your life.” – Jean Shinoda Bolen

3. Schedule Pockets of Alone Time

If none of the above work for you, mark some time in your calendar just for yourself. Schedule it without guilt or embarrassment of not doing something rather “productive.” This time alone is the most productive use of your time. Trust it.

I maintain a schedule of going to the park alone after lunch every day. It is only 20 minutes, but my brain feels brand new after coming back. And you don’t need to go anywhere to carve this me-time, just ask everyone not to disturb you unless it’s an emergency. There’ll be none 99% of the days.

If you are having an incredibly hectic day, couple your me-time with lunchtime. Don’t spend it checking emails, running errands, or deepening networks on LinkedIn. Spend it with yourself. Eat alone without phones or screens.

At the end of the day, you’ll be grateful that you made some time for solitude. Negotiating a mindless task for spending time alone is the barter in which not only you win – your relationships prosper, your work improves, and you become a better version of yourself. So, do it, have the courage to shut the door.
