When you’re a single mother, you often have to do work for two people, no matter if you share custody or get help from people around you. Mothers have a lot of tasks from cooking and cleaning, to helping kids with homework and solving various kid issues. And things only get harder if you have a career of your own. So it’s only natural and understandable to neglect certain home improvement jobs. But with these tips, you can stay on top of all fixes and issues around the house and achieve the impossible.

Assemble Your Tool Kit

Of course, you won’t need any heavy machinery or complicated electronics for work around the household, but there are a few tools you simply can’t survive without. Grab a toolbox and fill it with a few essential hand tools like a hammer, tape measure, screwdriver, pliers, wrench, utility knife and a cordless drill. All of these are very intuitive when it comes to handling and don’t require any special training. And don’t forget a few painting tools. Painting is the most common home improvement task people do and with a wide brush, angle brush, short-handle brush and a roller, you can tackle any paint job from walls to furniture.

Seek Help From YouTube

You’ll be surprised how many solutions to problems you can find on YouTube or similar networks. These are not only free but presented by regular people like you, so you have a high chance of understanding simple terminology and having all the necessary tools. From diagnosing problems with your appliances, to painting walls and putting up fixtures, you can find all of it by performing a simple Google search.

Consider Safety

No matter what kind of tasks you’re performing (painting walls, hammering nails or doing yard work) you need to be safe and protected. Many countries like the UK have an established work safety culture, so you can easily find quality workwear and protect your body, head and feet from any accident. This is especially important when you have kids around because you want them to see you use proper protective gear and develop safety habits. Sturdy work pants and shirts are a must, as well as a proper hat for outside work. You also want boots with toe protection that will keep your feet safe from falling objects, sharp tools and bumps.

Nip Issues In The Bud

Don’t wait for small issues to grow and become big and costly problems. Instead, tackle them as they come. In most cases, a small drip or a small chip of paint will only take a few minutes to solve, but if you wait, you might need to replace fixtures or a complete repaint. Come up with a maintenance and improvement schedule so you can stay on top of all the tasks. For instance, once a month you might need to trim shrubs and trees, twice a year to clean your gutters, and once a year to flush your water heater.

Look For Budget Home Improvements

Many single mothers have a shoestring budget to work with, so some heavier home improvements are off the table. If you also struggle with money yet want to refresh your home, choose certain improvements that cost next to nothing. For instance, repainting your entire house is quite cheap, yet brings amazing results. Things like repainting your furniture are also very effective, but you also tackle your front door or build nice shelving for the living room. With a few tools and materials, you can do a lot in one afternoon.

Make It A Family Event

You’d be surprised to know how much kids love to be helpful around the house. If you make your home improvement projects into a family affair, you can all have a blast while doing something beneficial for the entire household. Kids can do a lot of things from painting and sending to hammering and helping with tools and lighting. As long as you’re there to assist and provide safety gear, your kids will love your little home improvement days. Plus, this will provide them with many useful skills they will most definitely need in the future.

As a single mom, you most likely have a lot of things to keep in your mind, but with these easy home improvement tips, your home will always look absolutely amazing (minus the daily mess, but that’s forgiven).

When you’re a single parent, you wear many hats. From driving your kids around to preparing meals and from doing laundry to helping with homework, life can feel a little overwhelming at times. That’s true for two-parent households. But, when you’re doing it on your own, it’s easy to get weighed down by stress.

Unfortunately, that stress can become even heavier if you’re trying to buy a house on your own. Almost a quarter of children in the U.S. live in a household with a single parent. So, you’re not alone in your feelings. Because single parenthood is so prominent, there are also tips and resources you can use to your advantage when buying a home.

With that in mind, let’s look at a few ways you should be prepared when buying a house. When you feel more confident in the process, you’ll be able to enjoy the excitement that comes with it, rather than the anxiety and stress.

Plan Ahead As Much As Possible

If you don’t want to feel like you’re in over your head while buying a house, planning ahead is crucial. The first thing you should do is create a budget. That will give you a starting point for what you can afford and where you should be looking. It will also give you an idea of where you might be able to cut back if you’re trying to save money for other things.

As you look at your budget, add a mortgage into the equation, and everything else that goes with home buying. That could include downpayment costs, insurance, and property taxes.

If the financial side of buying a home seems overwhelming, use the many resources available to you. If you’re a veteran, you might qualify for a VA loan. If not, talk to a HUD counselor or look into homeownership vouchers. If this is your first time buying a home, you might even qualify for certain tax credits that can help offset the costs.

Dealing with financial issues can be one of the biggest stressors when it comes to buying a house. The more you dive into your budget and know what you can afford ahead of time, the easier finding a home that works for your family will be.

Prepare Your Kids

If moving is stressful for you, think about how stressful it can be for your kids. That’s especially true if you’re moving to a new town where they have to make friends or go to a different school. Making sure they’re prepared will make the process easier on all of you. But, how can you do that?

First, discuss the move with them. Use age-appropriate language and methods to make sure they understand why you’re moving and how it will benefit everyone. Some ideas that might make the transition easier, especially for younger kids, include:

Visiting the new house before officially moving in

Keeping your child’s bedroom furniture for the new place

Avoiding other big changes during the move

Listening to their concerns and addressing them appropriately

Does all of this ensure that the move will be completely smooth for your kids? No. It’s a good rule of thumb to keep checking in with them, even after you move into your new place. Talk to them about how they’re handling things and what they need. Offer as much support as possible, and let them know their feelings are valid. It might take some time, but once they start to adapt and make friends, it will get easier.

Practice Self-Care

This might seem like an unimportant tip when compared to the others. But, it might actually be the most crucial preparedness step of all. Single parents tend to be at a greater risk for mental health conditions. One study found that 30% of single mothers reported symptoms of anxiety or depression, compared with 14% of mothers with partners.

On top of the everyday pressures that come from raising a family on your own, home buying is stressful. It can cause symptoms of anxiety if you’re worried about finding the right place, how you’ll afford it, or just tackling everything on your own. Finding ways to take care of yourself – mentally and physically – will help to keep you from getting overwhelmed about the process.

If moving is stressing you out or you just need a break, try some of these self-care tips:

Take your time and don’t rush the process

Exercise each day

Spend time outside

Schedule time every day for yourself to relax

Meditate

Practice mindfulness

When you’re able to reduce stress, you’ll have an easier time balancing all areas of your life. Keep these self-care tips in mind while you’re buying a house to have a better handle on your career, your family, and your overall well-being.

Buying a house should be exciting, no matter how stressful it is. Consider this process the next chapter in your life, and be as prepared as possible to enjoy the experience at every turn.

Hurray for foreplay! It’s incredibly important when it comes to female sexual satisfaction because women require more stimulation than men to orgasm. As a result, penetrative sex alone is often insufficient to get the “job” done.

Luckily, foreplay can be practiced in so many ways. Touching, kissing, sensual massages, rubbing against each other’s bodies, using sex toys – the options are limitless.

If you’re seeking new ideas to make foreplay breathtaking for your partner, here are a couple of options worth exploring.

Find New Body Spots To Kiss

The term foreplay refers to any kind of sexual activity that occurs before actual penetrative sex. It can mean different things to different people but for the vast majority of couples, foreplay involves kissing.

As far as kissing goes, a couple of body spots get all the attention – the mouth, earlobes, neck, breasts and clitoris top the list. If you want to surprise your partner and discover new sweet spots, start kissing your way up or down. Include parts of the body you wouldn’t normally focus on – the clavicle area, the tummy (especially around the belly button), the curve of the back, the butt and even the little knee hollow.

The female body is endowed with so many sensitive spots you probably haven’t discovered yet. By kissing her all over and paying attention to her reactions, you could discover some brand new erogenous zones.

Sensory Play

This is a more indirect type of foreplay that can build up a lot of anticipation. Foreplay doesn’t have to be heavy and intense to lead up to powerful orgasms. Sometimes, very gentle and teasing stimulation can contribute to much more profound results.

Sensory play refers to engaging the senses through the use of different textures and temperatures. Running a feather up and down their body is sensory play. The same applies to using an ice cube or a temperature-sensitive sex toy.

For even better effect, get your partner blindfolded. Depriving a lady of one sense will most definitely contribute to heightened sensations.

Get Creative With Sex Toys

Sex toys are your best friend when it comes to diversifying your foreplay routine. You have so many options to choose from – classic vibrators and wands, anal toys, and dildos to name but a few. There are even pornstar dildos molded from penises of male porn stars if that’s your thing.

If you’re looking for a brand new foreplay sex toy, you should probably get your partner involved. By shopping for toys together, you can create an intimate bonding experience. Also, you’ll learn some new stuff about her preferences that wouldn’t have come to the surface otherwise.

The Power Of Erotica

Watching a sexy movie together or reading some erotica will get things heated in a brand new way. Just like men, women are visual creatures. They get turned on by sexy scenes and by reading erotic literature. The imagery it presents will contribute to tons of arousal.

It takes some courage to talk to a partner about watching an erotic film together. Once you broach the subject, however, you’ll probably discover that she likes the idea. It will simply be a matter of finding the right stimulating material to watch or read.

When you get down to business, don’t be afraid to experiment with the stuff you’re watching on screen. Some of the techniques and ideas will probably be new to you. If you’re curious about how these feel, you should definitely go ahead and give them a try.

Ask Her To Masturbate In Front Of You (And Join In The Fun)

This is a particularly good foreplay tip if you’re having sex with a new partner or she takes longer to climax. Asking her to masturbate in front of you will give you a very, very good idea about what she likes.

Every person prefers to be touched in a very particular way. Sometimes, it will be difficult for a woman to describe to a partner what she likes or where he misses the mark. This is why showing him what works is going to be much more effective.

Looking at her pleasuring herself will give you the added bonus of skyrocketing your arousal. And when you feel ready, you can join in the fun and use the new knowledge that you’ve just acquired.

Talk Dirty

Talking dirty is an intricate art that very few people have mastered. Just like sensory play, it builds up anticipation. For example, touching her body gently while whispering in her ear what you intend to do later on is going to get her turned on very fast.

Talking dirty is somewhat tricky as you’ll have to discover what your partner likes and dislikes. Some women aren’t ok with vulgar talk and some want graphic details. If you intend to try talking dirty as a part of foreplay, ask your partner about what they like. While some discomfort is common at first, chances are that both of you will relax soon after and start enjoying that new foreplay element.

Try A Sex Game

Looking for even more foreplay ideas? You can buy and play a sex game with your partner. Some of these games are dice-based, others involve cards with instructions. The aim is to dare each other and go through with what the game asks of you. Usually, there will be naughty tasks and different kinds of sex or sex positions to test out.

While most sex games will focus on foreplay ideas you’re already familiar with, chances are that a few of the could present new opportunities. Trying such a game out at least once will help you decide if it’s the right choice for you.

Finally, keep an open mind, don’t be afraid of new stuff in the bedroom and pay attention to your partner’s responses. The best lovers out there are open to feedback and they use it to get better. Even if your partner is somewhat shy and not very communicative during sex, you can still find ways to obtain key information. It may take her some time to open up about what she likes. Take it slow, be gentle but keep on bringing up the subject. As trust grows and improves, so will your communication about sex.

Fact: Sitting too much, in any form, is bad for your body. When you sit for too long, science has shown that you’re setting yourself on the path to weight gain, back and shoulder pain, poorer mental health, less quality sleep, and dangerous chronic conditions such as heart disease. But according to a new review of health studies overseen by Wuyou Sui, Ph.D., a kinesiologist at Western University—and soon to be published in the journal Psychology of Sport and Exercise—there are indeed different ways you can be sitting, and some are better than others. Read on for more of what these scientists uncovered and how it applies to your own body and your overall sense of wellbeing. And if you fear that you’re living an overly sedentary lifestyle, make sure you’re aware of The One Major Side Effect of Sitting on the Couch Too Much, According to a New Study.

The review of studies focused on the context in which people lived a sedentary lifestyle, and specifically how those habits “correlated with a poorer hedonic well-being.” In other words, their research focuses on how we sit influences our sense of wellbeing—“an individual’s own evaluation of their quality of life,” according to the study—and how those feelings of satisfaction can impact our health overall. After all, how we view ourselves, the scientists say, will influence the decisions we make every day for the sake of our health. “Evaluating subjective well-being is vital for painting a holistic picture of health,” explains Sui.

The scientists note that the type of sitting most associated with a greater—and healthier—sense of wellbeing was sitting around other people and engaging in conversation, or while doing something else that is otherwise productive or fulfilling. “Time spent sitting while socializing, or playing an instrument, or reading demonstrated positive associations with outcomes of well-being,” says the study. “These findings highlight the importance in considering the context or domain of [sedentary behavior] as it relates to [your sense of] well-being.” And for more ways to boost your mood, check out our list of 50 Foods That Will Make You Look and Feel Better.

The study also found that, in terms of life satisfaction, the amount of time you sit or choose not to sit is entirely relative and unique to you. There is no firm amount of time that applies to everyone. “How much an individual sits relative to how much they usually sit may have a greater impact on their [sense of] well-being than the total amount of sitting they do,” observes the study.

So if you know that you’re sitting less than you usually do, it’s a bonus, and you’ll have stronger feelings of positivity and life satisfaction.

Shutterstock

“Our results revealed that increased screen time (e.g., TV, using computers) was typically associated with poorer hedonic well-being,” concludes the study. So not all forms of sitting are created equal, and you spend most of your time sitting simply watching TV or playing video games, the science says you’ll feel worse about yourself, which can adversely affect your health down the road.
