One in five people struggles with mental health issues daily. People cope with their problems through various mechanisms. However, these mechanisms sometimes ignore the issue or merely treat the symptoms rather than the main cause, which can eventually make the problem worse. Mental health awareness has increased in the last decade as it is vital to improving society’s overall well-being.

People have become more accepting of discussing their mental health now that the social stigma surrounding it is dying down, and they don’t feel as vulnerable opening up to professionals, family, or friends as they might have once done. If you are looking for ways to fight mental health issues, here are some tips that will help you along the way.

Being Physically Active

Improving your mental well-being starts with being physically active. You don’t have to spend hours in the gym or exercise intensely to take care of your physical health, however. Find physical activities that you enjoy such as cycling, swimming, or walking, and keep doing them regularly as these activities raise your self-esteem, change your mood for the better, and help you set goals and achievements for yourself. You don’t have to spend money to be physically active either, so don’t stress yourself and explore different activities to find what you enjoy the most.

Talking About Your Feelings

It may sound obvious, but talking about feelings feels so difficult and awkward for everyone. Some people consider sharing their feelings as a sign of weakness, but that is far from the truth. Talking to someone about how you feel or relaying the intrusive thoughts that bother you is a way to improve your mental health; it will open you up to a plethora of support when you realize you’re not alone. You should talk to someone that you trust, whether that is a family member, a friend, or a professional mental health care provider. No matter how silly you think the feeling or thought is, talking about it is the first step to learning healthy coping mechanisms to overcome thoughts and fears that don’t serve you.

Seeking Help

Some mental health issues are overwhelming and can’t be handled alone, and it is essential to seek help to overcome or deal with these problems. While friends and family are excellent at giving support to ensure you feel loved, they are not equipped with the right knowledge and expertise to take the right approach. Scheduling an appointment with a psychiatrist can help you learn more about yourself. Here in Southern California, finding a reliable and quality mental health residence is more realistic than one might think, regardless of finances or health concerns. You can find affordable and reliable care around the clock. This way you can ascertain that you’ll receive the right amount of care and treatment. Joining local support groups is another great help to show you how others are coping with the same problems. If you feel overwhelmed or exhausted to the point you can no longer deal with your mental health problems on your own, seek assistance; you don’t have to endure this alone.

Being Nice To Yourself

It is extremely easy to judge, criticize, and be hard on ourselves, especially when we are feeling down. Being hard on yourself intensifies stress and anxiety and deteriorates your mental health. It is difficult to be nice to yourself when your mental health is suffering. That’s why you should learn how to be compassionate to yourself. When you’re feeling down, it can be hard to compliment or congratulate yourself for anything. In times like this, try to be patient with yourself, and understand that a little goes a long way. Doing something small that puts a smile on your face is a big step forward.

Doing Mental Health Exercises

If you think it’ll be overwhelming to share your feelings or seek help, you can start small by doing some simple mental health exercises. Small steps have a huge positive effect in the long run as long as you are persistent. Meditation is a great exercise that will improve your mental health over time by doing practices like slow breathing. Writing your feelings and thoughts in a journal takes the stress of them off your mind even if for a short while and will help you feel better. Another good mental health exercise is stretching, which can be done any time of the day, anywhere, and any number of times. Laughing, dancing, and listening to music can boost your mental health considerably and improve your mood. Pick a couple of mental health exercises and schedule them, but don’t overdo it or push yourself to do what you’re not in the mood for and stress yourself even more.

Mental health is an essential aspect of your overall health and it can negatively affect your body in the long run. Opening up and allowing feelings of vulnerability are difficult tasks that most people don’t know how to do. Learning how to cope with your mental health issues will promote a more sustainable and healthy lifestyle as you work on improving different aspects of your life. Don’t be harsh on yourself; we all make mistakes, so be compassionate and patient with yourself. If you feel like nothing has worked for you, so far, don’t fret! It is never late to seek professional help to improve the quality of your life.

Have you heard of the ever-growing trend of organic gardening? Namely, people worldwide are starting to avoid using synthetic fertilisers and pesticides. They’re embracing a holistic approach to gardening where they’re using more sustainable fertilizer, homemade compost and avoiding the use of plastic in the process. If you’re considering organic gardening, your home can serve as a solid starting point. A backyard with enough space to plant a few vegetable sorts and some fruit will be enough to start with. Here are some tips on how you can start an organic garden in your home.

Find A Suitable Location

A garden where you’ll be growing food should be isolated from the street racket and pollution from the cars. Therefore, your backyard will be perfect. Look for a corner of the garden that will be a nice starting point and eventually allow you to spread out once you get a hang of gardening. Preferably the spot you choose will allow for plenty of sunlight and rain.6 to 8 hours of sunlight a day is necessary for the plants to grow well, so plan for the site accordingly. The garden should also be out of kids’ sight and reach so that they don’t wish to run around and pick crops that are not ripe yet.

Organic Garden Soil And Mulch For The Base

Healthy soil is the prerequisite for a healthy organic garden. Compost, manure and peat moss are some of the best types of organic matter you can use to enrich the soil. The decayed microorganisms from earlier plants will offer future plants all the nutritious elements they need. To make the garden as organic as possible, make your own compost or use bagged compost from garden centres. With mulch, you’ll prevent the weeds from overgrowing your garden area. The weeds won’t get as much sunlight or germinate in the garden. Newspaper, weed-free straws and cocoa hulls will be perfect to use as mulch.

Enclose The Garden And Protect From Pets

The next matter to take care of is protecting your garden from unwanted visitors. If you have pets who like to run around the backyard, they’ll inevitably want to roam through your organic garden. To prevent them from making huge damage to the plants, build a fence around them. Consider using chain wire fencing to create a barrier for pets. You can even consider enclosing another part of the backyard with wired fencing to create a designated pet area with all of your four-legged friend’s toys and entertainment.

Water Regularly

Knowing how much water your plants need and how often to water them is of the essence when taking care of your organic garden. One of the best ways to know whether your plants need watering is to stick a finger in the soil, and if it’s moist, it doesn’t require water yet. Only water it when you feel it’s dry. Instead of watering the top of the plants, focus on the soil around the base of the plants. That way the soil can absorb the water that will later reach the roots. You might want to consider drip irrigation for your organic garden.

Feed The Plants

Aside from enough water, the plants will need food as well. Look for plant nutrition options and give your garden the necessary boost. That will help them produce richer harvests and make your peppers and tomatoes extra juicy. Go to your local garden centre and look for prepacked organic fertilizer. Alternatively, if you know someone who has an animal farm, ask for manure made by chickens, sheep, horses or rabbits. As long as it’s well-rotted, it will help your plants yield juicer crops. Unlike synthetic fertilizers, when you use organic, the soil will level up in quality every time you use them.

Starting an organic garden will be the best hobby for you and your family. The food that you grow in the garden will be pesticide-free, and you’ll know that you’re eating only healthy fruits and vegetables. Aside from offering your family the best quality food, you’ll also have a new hobby to enjoy and potentially grow your garden and turn it into a profitable pastime. Just make sure you’re watering the plants regularly, feed them with natural fertilizers, protect them from pets, and you’ll have a garden to enjoy for a long time.

A healthy, loving relationship is a wonderful thing —there’s much to be said about the psychological and even physical benefits of knowing that someone loves you. Yet, relationships are commitments, and any commitment will require some degree of sacrifice, whether that be a reassessment of your priorities, a reevaluation of your self-worth, or placing the needs of your partner before your own.

The truth is that we owe it to our future partners to be fully prepared for a relationship before getting ourselves involved in one. We cannot make it another person’s responsibility to lift us up because we would be dragging them down, which is not what love is.

So, before you commit to a serious relationship, here are some essential bits of self-improvement you should attend to first that will make you a better partner in the future.

1. Learn to Enjoy Your Own Company

This may seem counterintuitive, but you must learn to enjoy yourself before entering a relationship, even while you are alone. Not being comfortable by yourself will inevitably lead to anxiety and neediness when you eventually do find yourself in a relationship, which will only serve to push your partner away and may even breed feelings of resentment towards them.

To better appreciate ourselves, we must explore our interests, find hobbies that we enjoy and things that we are passionate about. This will help you understand what makes you unique and allow you to bring something to the table when it comes to your future relationship. Therefore, your reasons for being with your partner will stem from genuine love rather than a need to fill an emptiness within yourself.

2. Resist the Urge to Entertain Feelings of Jealousy

Jealousy is a demon we all struggle with; it can come up in every aspect of our lives. Learning to manage our feelings of jealousy is an invaluable skill whether we’re talking about romantic relationships, friendships, or even careers.

In our romantic relationships, extreme cases of jealousy can lead us to become possessive, as we desperately attempt to guard what we perceive as ours from threats —real or imagined. We might force our partners to give us access to their phones, forbid them from forming friendships with people we deem threats, and live in a constant state of paranoia that somehow they are disloyal.

By giving in to our jealousy, all we are doing is helping to bring about what we fear most. Rather than allowing ourselves to be overcome by feelings of jealousy, we must take the more difficult path of learning not to begrudge others for their good fortune and to trust our partners.

“You are essentially who you create yourself to be, and all that occurs in your life is the result of your own making.” ― Stephen Richards

3. Practice Coping Mechanisms For Stressful Situations

When we love someone, an important part of that love is the desire to protect them. On the other hand, lashing out at even those closest to us can be an involuntary and impulsive response when we find ourselves stressed out. If you’re constantly taking out your frustrations on your partner, you’ll have only yourself to blame when they say enough is enough.

The measure of our capacity to love is not determined by how we act when the weather is fair, but by how we are in the darkest moments of our lives. Two ways come to mind for learning to love when we’re stressed and loving is hardest: the first is to gain an understanding of our flaws and harmful tendencies when under pressure, and the second is to learn how to relieve the build-up of stress and pressure before it becomes an issue.

The first method is undoubtedly essential —as it’s impossible to go through life without encountering some form of challenge that will take us to the breaking point. But, getting a good grip on the behaviors we should avoid is usually a process of trial and error and self-reflection after the fact. It is a lifelong process and not something any of us will perfect before getting into a relationship.

So, to be more loving partners, we can learn how to destress so we don’t get to the point where we’re lashing out unconsciously. A workout or a yoga session, a stroll through the park, or simply a brief diary entry at the end of the day are all healthy ways to relax —find something that works for you.

4. Check Your Baggage at the Door

Yes, you are a strong person. But, despite your own potential beliefs to the contrary, your baggage: prior relationships —traumatic experiences in particular— will have a significant impact on your future relationships.

Overcoming past trauma is rarely straightforward. Even if you’re able to identify what past events are impacting your current ability to connect emotionally, it can still be really difficult to make the conscious decision not to let them influence your feelings and actions.

Perhaps you’re still in the midst of your recovery; some pain never really goes away —our capacity to bear it merely increases. But, the consciousness of your baggage is the first and most important step toward becoming a better person for your partner and creating a healthy relationship.

5. Learn to Communicate Sincerely

Most of the relationship advice listed above is just as helpful for success outside of relationships. The information below is no exception.

No relationship is going to be smooth sailing to the horizon, and no couple lives “happily ever after, full stop.” When a relationship becomes so difficult that you feel like cutting your losses and calling it quits, don’t. These are the situations where what we want to communicate is often too difficult or too painful for us to comprehend fully, and so we feel the urge to give up and withdraw, or worse, to fight back and cause harm with our words.

A strong, long-term relationship has to be built on a foundation of sincere communication where both parties feel safe in freely expressing their desires, needs, and apprehensions without fear of reprisal or belittlement. A failure to communicate will only lead to more and more drastic misunderstandings between partners.

Being able to express yourself freely without fear of judgment is an amazing feeling and is necessary to a firm foundation for any relationship, not just romantic ones.

“Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking.”
Marcus Aurelius

“If you want happiness for an hour — take a nap.
If you want happiness for a day — go fishing.
If you want happiness for a year — inherit a fortune.
If you want happiness for a lifetime — help someone else.”
Chinese Proverb

Saying no is often the easier way out.

When you say no you can safely stay within your comfort zone. You don’t have to fear failing or being rejected.

The scary unknown and sometimes difficult change can be avoided.

But if you say yes your life can expand and deepen. The yes allows you to open up your life to more happiness.

Today I would like to share 10 things that I have said yes to and that have helped me to become happier in my life.

Pick one of these that resonate the most with you and focus on making it a part of your life.

1. Being imperfect.

Trying to be perfect is setting the bar too high. It will be impossible to reach.

And so you’ll lower your self-esteem. You may not feel very happy about how things are going in your life.

Even though they might be going very well indeed.

Perfectionism is mindset that eats at you and your happiness. Saying yes to being imperfect can turn that around.

How to do it:

Realize the costs of buying into myths of perfection.

By watching too many movies, listening to too many songs and just taking in what the world is telling you it is very easy to be lulled into dreams of perfection.

It sounds so good and wonderful and you want it.

But in real life it clashes with reality and it can harm or possibly lead you to end relationships, jobs, projects etc. just because your expectations are out of this world.

I find it very helpful to remind myself of this simple fact.

Go for good enough.

Aiming for perfection usually winds up in a project or something else very slowly or never being finished.

So go for good enough instead.

Don’t use it as an excuse to slack off. But simply realize that there is something called good enough and when you are there then you are finished with whatever you are doing.

2. Being you.

Not being able to be yourself, always trying to change for others or censoring yourself don’t feel good at all.

It makes life feel so small and limited.

So how can you be yourself? Your environment plays a huge part.

How to do it:

Supportive people.

Spend more time with the people who support your dreams, values and you. Or are at least neutral.

And spend less time with people who always criticize you or you simply aren’t a good fit for.

Supportive and life-expanding influences outside of your everyday life.

Change your environment not only close to you. Go further and spend more time with sources of information that supports your dreams and can give you information that expands and makes your life happier and more exciting.

Find support from people you have never met via books, movies, blogs, forums and music.

And spend less time with negative and limiting influences.

3. The things that make you come alive.

It is important to find some time and energy for the things that you feel makes you come alive.

How to do it:

Mix it up.

Try something new, even if it is just something small each week.

Eat the vegetarian dish at lunch if you always eat meat.

Listen to some music that isn’t your normal cup of tea.

Go out to a movie, café or pub with friends if you usually stay in at night. Or vice versa.

Create variation and expand your comfort zone regularly in small ways to live a happier life.

Reconnect with what you used to love if it has fallen by the wayside.

If you used to go fishing, paint or play the guitar and it really made you come alive then reconnect.

Use an hour for it this week and see if it still brings you joy and makes you come alive.

4. Optimism.

Pessimism can really limit your life and bring it to a standstill.

It can make it feel like there’s no point in trying because it won’t make a difference or you’ll just fail. It can create ceilings and walls made out of glass where there really are none.

Saying yes a more optimistic way of thinking can on the other hand open your life up.

How to do it:

Ask yourself optimistic questions.

When you’re in what seems like a negative situation then make something better out of it by asking yourself questions that promote optimism and helps you to find solutions.

Questions like:

What is one thing that is positive or good about this situation?

What is the opportunity within this situation?

Start your day off on the right foot.

As mentioned in tip #2, the influences in your life can make a huge difference.

So choose to spend your breakfast time with an optimistic influence like for example a book, a blog or your mom.

Or talk to someone early in the day that most often supports and cheers you up like a co-worker or a friend in school.

5. Turning negative self-talk around.

It is very important to keep your motivation and your self-esteem up to live a happier life.

Your inner critic may be one of biggest obstacles standing in your way of that.

If you make a mistake or fail, if someone criticizes you or if you are just getting tired then that small inner voice can become louder and louder and drag and keep you down.

It can tell you that you are stupid or lazy. That you will not succeed. That you are worse or uglier than someone else.

Being able to turn the inner critic around or to shut it up as soon as it pops up is a very helpful skill.

How to do it:

Say stop.

Simply create a stop word or stop-phrase that you say or shout in your mind whenever your critic pipes up with a distorted and self-esteem hurting thought.

Say: Stop!

Or: No, no, no, we are not going there again!

Explain to yourself what this will lead to over the next year or more.

As I mentioned in tip #1, reminding yourself of the cost of buying into myths of perfection is a powerful way to replace those thought habits.

This works very well for other self-esteem hurting thought patterns too.

Remind yourself of how the inner critic has shaped your life so far. And in your mind see the cost of letting it roam free for another year or five.

6. Saying no when you feel it is the right thing for you to do.

To have the time and energy to say yes to the most important things you have to say no to some things too.

How to do it:

What do I truly want to focus my time and energy on?

When you get an offer or an opportunity arises ask yourself this question.

When you look over your schedule ask yourself this question. Think about and look at what your top priorities are and what you deep want before you say anything.

Disarm and then state your need.

It becomes easier for people to accept your no if you disarm them first.

You could for example do that by honestly saying that you are flattered or that you appreciate the kind offer.

Then you, for instance, add that you do not have the time for accepting and doing what they want. Or say that you do not feel that this offer is a good fit for your life right now.

7. Forgiveness.

Not clinging to the past and to the hurt that is there but to let it go and look to the now and the future is an essential thing to find more happiness in your life.

Forgiving is not always easy and can take time but there are some things that can make it a little easier.

How to do it:

Remind yourself that you forgive for your own benefit.

As long as you don’t forgive someone you are linked to that person. Your thoughts will return to the person who wronged you and what he or she did over and over again.

The emotional link between the two of you is so strong and inflicts much suffering in you and – as a result of your inner turmoil – most often in other people around you too.

When you forgive you do not only release the other person. You set yourself free from all of that agony too.

Make a habit of forgiving yourself.

Do not just forgive others but also yourself. By forgiving yourself – instead of resenting yourself for something you did a week or 10 years ago – you make the habit of forgiveness more and more of a natural part of you.

And so forgiving others becomes easier too.

8. Making someone else happy.

Making someone else happier has many benefits. The happiness spreads back to you as you see his or her face light up and as you know you did the right thing.

It spreads back to you as people have a strong tendency to want to give back when you have done something good for them.

And it spreads out into the world as that now happier person may spread his or her happiness to other people.

How to do it:

Help out practically.

Lend someone a hand when they are moving. Or give them a ride in your car. Or if they need information, try to find a solution by asking the people you know or via Google.

Just listen.

Sometime a friend or someone close to you may just want to vent or for someone to listen as he or she figures things out. It may not seem like much but it can be an immense help for someone who needs it.

So be there fully – don’t sit there thinking about something else – and listen.

9. Openness and growth.

Saying yes to being open to the good things in life and growing as a person plays a big role when it comes to happiness.

The other things in this article will help you with that. But here are two more tips that will make your journey a little easier and simpler.

How to do it:

Change one thing at a time.

Changing many things or your whole life at once sure sounds good. But willpower is something we often overestimate and everyday life tends to come in the way.

So to make sure you have a much better chance of changing a habit or area of your life change just one thing at a time.

Start small.

Just say no to one small thing you don’t want to do this week. Or forgive one person for one thing. Or help and make someone happy in some small way.

Take just one small step outside of your comfort zone.

10. To living your life fully despite setbacks.

When things have been standing still for while or you hit a bump in the road then it’s easy to back down. To shrink. To give in or give up.

But a better way to say yes to happiness in those situations is to say yes to living your life fully.

How to do it:

Keep going.

When you fail or make a mistake don’t give up. Reconnect with optimism by using the questions further up in this article. Find inspiration from books and blogs and the people around you.

And don’t beat yourself up. Instead nudge yourself back on track again.

Remember, it’s not too late to change your life.

I didn’t really try to improve my life very much until I was 25. And many throughout the world and history have made positive changes far later in life than that.

So if you want to make a change then start today. Work with what you have where you are right now.

Start small and take the first step towards something new.

Nearly one fifth of U.S. adults are on a special diet at any given time, according to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. However, countless individuals still find themselves struggling to shed those extra pounds, and with so many weight loss companies promoting so many different—and frequently expensive—ways to lose weight, it’s no wonder slimming down remains such a challenge.

That’s why we’ve reached out to registered dietitians to provide their best tips for healthy, sustainable weight loss you can start right now. Whether you’re eager to lose 10 pounds or 100, read on to find out what nutritional experts really recommend when it comes to losing weight. And for more great ways to slim down, check out these 15 Underrated Weight Loss Tips That Actually Work.

iStock

Instead of simply focusing on what you’re giving up to slim down, try focusing on what you could be eating more of, like healthy, low-calorie vegetables.

“Vegetables help keep you full for longer due to the fiber and water in the vegetables,” says Courtney D’Angelo, MS, RD, registered dietitian and author at Fit Healthy Momma.

“If you struggle eating veggies in the first place, try making eating them more fun! You can try cooking spaghetti with spiral [veggie] noodles, or you can add greens to smoothies,” D’Angelo suggests.

Shutterstock

While ketogenic diets may be having a moment, you may want to think twice before cutting grains from your diet if you’re trying to lose weight.

“Research supports that eating carbohydrates, or whole-grain wheat, can help with weight loss. Eating grains has been shown to increase your metabolism, which helps with weight loss,” says D’Angelo, who notes that a 2017 study published in Nutrients has linked consumption of whole grains to lower rates of obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Even if you’re not big on breakfast, kicking off your morning with a few glasses of water can make it easier to avoid overeating throughout the day.

“Hydrating is a simple and effective way to promote weight loss. Water is also an appetite suppressant. Sometimes, you may feel hungry when you are, in fact, thirsty, especially in the morning,” says Kristen Fleming, MS, RD, a consultant for BetterMe. “Start your day with two glasses of water. This will help you stay hydrated, keep you from misinterpreting thirst for hunger and unnecessary snacking.”

If you want to speed up your weight loss, try slowing down your meals by increasing how much you chew each bite.

“Putting in a conscious effort to chew your food more slowly can help increase weight loss,” says Fleming. “Slow eating has been shown to reduce energy intake during meals. According to a small study, caloric intake was higher with chewing 15 times per bite than with 50 times per bite.”

Shutterstock

Eating meals that keep you full for a longer period is key when it comes to weight loss, so try making healthy fats a priority whenever you sit down to eat.

“Of all the macronutrients, fat takes the longest to digest and is the most satiating, so eliminating it sets you up to fail by inviting hunger to creep in shortly after a meal. Include a healthy fat source such as avocado, olive oil, nuts, cheese, etc. every time you eat to minimize hunger so you can get on with the rest of your day,” recommends Kayla Girgen, RD, LD, founder of Nutrition Untapped.

Shutterstock

Losing weight isn’t only about what you eat or how much you exercise. Factors like sleep can play a major role in how quickly those pounds come off.

“Not getting adequate rest puts your body in a heightened state of stress, which negatively impacts hormones involved in weight loss. Dim the lights and ditch the screens about 30 to 60 minutes before bed. Try reading, gentle stretches, or having a cup of hot tea to wind down instead,” Girgen suggests.

Shutterstock

If you’re looking for a flavorful alternative to those sugary coffee drinks you use to perk up in the morning, try adding some weight-loss-boosting green tea to your diet instead.

“Drinking pu-erh tea, a glass in the morning about an hour after breakfast, can be a great tool for weight loss. It speeds up your metabolism while also helping your body to eliminate excess fat, resulting in a slimmer waistline,” says Lauren Pimentel, RD, founder of The Cake Nutritionist, citing a 2012 review of research published in Dongwuxue Yanjiu.

It can be easy to lose track of every bite of food you take over the course of the day but keeping a food journal can help you better gauge how much you’re really eating.

“A 2019 study found that keeping a food journal, especially one that allows you to upload photos, resulted in significantly greater weight loss,” says Sarah Williams, MS, RD, owner, and founder of Sweet Balance Nutrition. “This helps people understand how to get in a calorie deficit and stay mindful about food choices.”

For many teachers, private tutoring has become a popular alternative career to working in a school. Tutoring offers added flexibility and the ability to set your own income. Below are some tips on how to start a tutoring business from home.

Know Your Subject

A passion for your subject is essential. Whether you’re teaching kids or adults, you need to have the knowledge to gain your students’ trust. An understanding of the curriculum and school examination system could be useful if you’re tutoring school subjects – experience working in a school could be beneficial. You should also consider obtaining relevant qualifications. If you’re teaching a non-curricular subject, such as teaching a foreign language without examination or teaching someone to play a musical instrument without grades, you may be able to come up with your own itinerary, although having qualifications could still be useful for gaining client trust.

In-Person Vs Virtual Lessons

You can choose to either tutor students in-person or tutor them via virtual lessons. When tutoring in-person you need to decide whether to go to your clients’ homes or to invite students to your home. The former is usually preferred as it means that you don’t have to convert part of your home into a classroom. Virtual lessons are another option that could allow you to teach students remotely via video call. Virtual tutoring also allows you to take on students further afield instead of being restricted locally.

Managing The Business Admin Side

As a private tutor, you’ll be working for yourself. You need to be able to keep on top of all the necessary business admin. Consider setting up an office in your home. If you’d prefer to divide your personal and home life, consider buying a separate phone for business use and use a service like PhysicalAddress to separate your business mail. You’ll need to calculate your taxes and expenses each year and file a tax return. Downloading some accounting software could be useful for automating a lot of this.

Marketing Your Business

You will need to find a way of marketing your tutoring business. You should consider starting by launching a website. Consider investing in some SEO and PPC advertising to help increase the reach of this website. You should then consider setting up social media pages on the likes of Facebook and LinkedIn. You can then use these social media pages to run promoted posts. There are various others ways in which you can market your business from door-to-door flyers to email marketing. Try to do your market research to work out exactly where your target audience can be found so that you can target these places. For instance, if you’re thinking of tutoring maths, work out exactly who the types of people are that are hiring maths tutors.

Given the stress and challenges of this past year, your inner critic may be at a dull roar by now. This harsh internal voice can contribute to “imposter syndrome” or a feeling that you’re not worthy of success. This roommate you would never choose might sound something like this: “I’m not doing anything well,” “I’m not as smart as my colleagues and not equipped for this job,” “I should be further along in my career; I’m stagnating,” “That person is so together,” “I am overwhelmed!” And as you listen to this inner voice, you may be thinking you are the only one in the world wired this way. The truth is, you are not alone.

As human beings, we are in a never-ending internal conversation with ourselves. The average person has 12,000 to 60,000 thoughts a day. About 80% are negative, and 95% are repetitive from the day before. We catastrophize. We add drama. We add unnecessary significance.

But despite the amount of automatic negativity, there is good news! The good news is you do not have to be permanently stuck with this awful roommate delivering non-stop cruel commentary. You can choose your thoughts and change the narrative. (Audible sigh of relief!) Get started taming your inner critic today, and take back control with the following four practices.

Practice 1 – Clear Power Outages

Everyone experiences a temporary loss of power or confidence triggered by unmet expectations, mistakes, breakdowns, conflicts, and other people. Some power outages are small, while others can feel like a city-wide grid failure on New Year’s Eve. It can be extremely difficult to function during a power outage, causing you to spiral, and then spiral some more. Fortunately, the severity and time spent in these power outages can be drastically decreased with our three-step model.

Take three deep breaths.

Find a person you trust to talk through the power outage. Make sure this person understands they are there to give you the opportunity to be heard and not problem solve/give advice. When you share all the details out loud, it will be cathartic and mitigate the drama while trapped in your head.

Decide when you can let it go. Determine what actions you can take to help yourself reset.

People continually tell themselves disempowering stories — about their circumstances, themselves, and others. Then, we go about collecting evidence to prove ourselves right.

In my 30s, when I was in corporate America, I was layered under a new manager as a result of a reorg. This change was a complete shock and disappointment. I was angry. I thought the new manager did not like me and did not value my contributions. I thought it would never work.

During the next few weeks, I collected evidence supporting this belief — all of the reasons why this was a mistake and why I should not be reporting to him. I got screwed, and this manager was not right for me. After weeks of suffering, losing sleep, and venting with a select few about how I was feeling trapped and unmotivated, my husband finally asked me in a calm supportive way, “Am I going to have to listen to this every night or do you plan to get a new job?”

That was a wake-up call. I didn’t want a new job. I appreciated my team, my clients, my compensation and upward potential. But currently, my sleep, job satisfaction, and sanity were on the line! I realized the cost of this negative story was steep. This could not go on any longer, but I didn’t want to make a career change. It was then I talked to my closest friend Wendy (Fast Forward co-founder) who gave me valuable counsel — I could either continue down this path, or I could choose a new story and be happy.

“If you gave your inner genius as much credence as your inner critic, you would be light years ahead of where you now stand.” – Alan Cohen

I chose the new story: “I can learn from every manager.” This new story provided me with a new lens to look through, which led me to take actions I would not have otherwise taken.

I sought out my manager’s council on challenges, and, to my surprise, he was helpful. I set up breakfasts with him to get to know him personally and found he was not so bad, after all. I made recommendations to improve the business and culture, and he listened! Within months, I had evidence for the new story and was thriving at work and home.

You, too, can choose a new story using our simple three-step process:

What is your negative story?

What is the cost of believing the story? Understand the cost of believing in that story and how it is holding you back from progress and happiness.

What is another story you can choose? Choose a new story that empowers you to move forward.

Since we are often attached to our stories, it is quite valuable to get input from someone you trust like I did! The powerful practice of choosing a new story allows you to have an outlook that fuels you. You can choose to be right, or you can choose to be happy.

Practice 3 – Run Your Own Race

This expression comes from thoroughbred horse racing — jockeys put blinders on their horses so they focus on the track ahead and not the horse to the left and right. This is a powerful metaphor! Comparing yourself to others is often disempowering and focuses you on what you don’t have versus what you do.

Put your energy toward running your own race, so you can focus on your strengths and be your personal best. Here are some recommendations to do this:

Limit scrolling through social media: The phrase Instagram versus reality exists for a reason. Spending hours in a rabbit hole of the cultivated image of people’s lives and adventures does not move you closer to your goals.

Focus on your strengths: Practice a glass half full attitude. Instead of focusing on your shortcomings, make a list of the valuable things you contribute — at work, personally and in the world!

Shift envy to admiration: If you see someone advancing more quickly in their career, reach out to them for advice. Ask them to be your mentor. Tell them they are a role model to you. You never know what those conversations can lead to for your personal and professional growth.

Practice 4 – Journal Daily

This simple practice takes only six minutes a day and creates a huge impact. Journaling is proven to help people sleep better, lower stress and improve confidence and relationships.

Every morning, write down three things you are grateful for.

Every evening, write down three things that you are proud of and/or did well that day.

While there are many things in life we can’t control, you CAN control your inner critic. Start using these four practices today. You have one life — you are worth it.

“Gratitude is when memory is stored in the heart and not in the mind.”
Lionel Hampton

“Let us be grateful to the people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.”
Marcel Proust

Maybe the simplest and most effortless habit for living a happier life is to take one or a few minutes every day to focus on what is already here and that you can be grateful for in your life.

It can help you to…

Lift your mood and boost motivation very quickly.

Find the things in your life that you want to focus even more of your time and energy on.

Not just take things for granted and to find joy even during the tougher times.

It is simply a great habit to cultivate that demands little but gives much back.

So this week I’d like to explore 5 small tips that you can use to cultivate more gratitude and happiness in your life.

1. Pause and look around yourself.

A first simple step to build the gratitude habit is simply to pause in your everyday life and to ask yourself questions like:

What can I be grateful for in my life today?

Who are 3 people that I can be grateful to have in my life and why?

If you cannot come up with several things or people every day then that is OK. If you find one thing or one person then that is great too. Don’t get hung up on the numbers.

Just take a few minutes and see what you come up with.

Try to not repeat the same things too often. Instead, try to think of more things and people you can be grateful for in your life.

2. Look towards yourself.

Don’t just look outward.

Take a look at yourself too. A habit of being appreciative and grateful towards yourself is a simple way to improve self-esteem and self-confidence.

Ask yourself:

What are 3 things I can be grateful for about myself?

It could be that you were a good father/mother/friend in a moment of crisis this week. It could be that you finally got done with that task you had been procrastinating on.

Your self-gratitude does not have to be all about achievements at work or in school for example.

You can simply be grateful for your good sense of humor or that you help people out a lot by being a good listener from time to time.

3. Take a closer look at the very smaller things or what you may take for granted.

Don’t just focus on the big and obvious things you can be grateful for.

Think about what very small things you can be grateful for too.

Like the plant just in front of my laptop that I am writing these words on.

It is not a remarkable plant. But its simple beauty in the vibrant green color, how it keeps growing on just a little water and sunshine and the faint smell of nature is something simple I feel grateful for.

Another thing that I am grateful for today – that I may sometimes take for granted – was my lunch. It was a few potatoes with some grilled chicken and a dollop of sauce. It was delicious.

And, more importantly, I don’t have to go hungry. I am in the very fortunate position of being able to eat lunch every day.

Ask yourself:

What is one very small thing that I can be grateful for today?

What is one thing I may usually for granted that I can be grateful for?

Opening your eyes to the small and daily things you can appreciate lets you truly see more of the simple beauty in life.

4. Do it early or late in your day.

But how do you get the gratitude habit to stick and not just become one of those things you forget about or abandon after a few days?

Two things that I have found effective are:

Take 1 minute in the morning to get a good start to your day by finding 3 small or big things you are grateful for in your life.

Take 1-2 minutes each evening and use a journal to write down maybe 3 or 5 things you are grateful for about your day, about yourself or about your life.

Try one of these tiny time commitments every day for a week and see how it impacts your thoughts, feelings and life.

5. Express your gratitude.

Don’t just keep the gratitude on the inside. Express it.

Make other people happier too – and help them to perhaps pay it forward later on – by expressing how you are grateful for having them in your life.

Plus, their smile and the joy in their eyes when you tell them this will make you happier too.

Now, that gratitude could just be a small sentence. But it can have a big impact on someone’s day, week or even life sometimes.

So tell the people in your life.

Tell them in person tonight. Or write an email or a letter to someone a little further away in the world. Or send a small text message right now.
