<p>&#8220;<a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://www.jci.org/articles/view/37385">Studies</a> suggest that added sugar can lead to fat accumulation around your abdomen and liver,&#8221; explains Michels. &#8220;Sugar provides empty calories that digest quickly and spike blood glucose rapidly. It sets off a metabolic response that jumps and crashes blood sugar levels, leaving you feeling hungry sooner. If not used for immediate energy, sugar may be stored as fat.&#8221;</p>
<p>To decrease your consumption of added sugars, she suggests that you assess your current added sugar intake by reading food labels, and gradually decrease the number you come up with by several grams each week until your goal is reached.</p>
<p>&#8220;Surprising foods with high added sugar include yogurt, dressing, sauces, (like BBQ, ketchup, spaghetti sauce), granola, breakfast cereals &amp; cereal bars, flavored coffee, pre-made soup, crackers, fruit juice, and canned fruit,&#8221; she says.</p>
<p>According to Michels, the biggest ways to decrease your consumption of added sugar include swapping out sugar-sweetened beverages with lower or no-added-sugar options, and swapping out candy, cookies, and sugar-sweetened snacks with fresh fruit, cut-up vegetables, or any lean protein source (like a protein shake, hard-boiled egg, uncured beef jerky).</p>

<p>&#8220;Soluble fiber is found in plant foods and has a gel-like consistency that slows down digestion, improves satiety, and aids in blood sugar management,&#8221; says Michels. &#8220;The average American diet is very processed and low in fiber.&#8221;</p>
<p>One five-year-long <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3856431/">study</a> found that <strong>consuming 10 grams of soluble fiber per day reduced abdominal fat by 3.7%</strong>.</p>
<p>To increase your intake of soluble fiber, Michels suggests first assessing your current soluble fiber intake, and gradually increase it to at least 10 grams daily.</p>
<p>&#8220;Soluble fiber food sources include oatmeal, flax, beans, carrots, green beans, broccoli, navel oranges, avocados, grapefruit, strawberries,&#8221; she says.</p>

<p>Incorporating weight training and cardiovascular exercise are two of the most effective healthy habits for reducing abdominal fat.</p>
<p>&#8220;These activities have also been found to decrease the risk of chronic disease and aid in weight management,&#8221; says Michels. &#8220;Exercise also aids in blood sugar management and stress reduction, which are both associated with abdominal fat when not in check.&#8221;</p>
<p>According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://health.gov/sites/default/files/2019-09/Physical_Activity_Guidelines_2nd_edition.pdf">Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans</a>, you should aim for a minimum of (1) 150 minutes of moderate-intensity cardiovascular exercise per week and (2) 2 weekly strength training sessions, exercising each of the 5 major muscle groups (chest, back, arms, shoulders, abdominals) with a minimum of 1 set for 8-12 reps.</p>
<p>&#8220;Those that schedule and write down their workouts on their calendar are more likely to stick to them,&#8221; says Michels. &#8220;If you don&#8217;t have 30 minutes at once, consider breaking up your activity into three, 10-minute sessions throughout the day.&#8221;</p>

<p>It may be tempting to find a weight loss supplement that can help speed along your process, but it&#8217;s important to know which ones are actually helpful and which ones may just be a waste of time and money.</p>
<p>According to registered dietitian <strong><a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/blanca-garcia-rdn/">Blanca Garcia</a>, RDN</strong>, <strong>one of the worst supplements for weight loss is one that requires a person to completely replace a meal.</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;There is no supplement out there that can effectively provide all the nutrients nature has created for the body, so a complete replacement of a meal over an extended period of time can cause a person to lack certain nutrients and fibers, sometimes only found in whole foods,&#8221; she says.</p>
<h2>Why meal replacement supplements are not as great for weight loss as you may think</h2>

<p>As Garcia tells us, it&#8217;s very difficult to get enough fiber with a meal replacement shake, and fiber is one of the most important components not only of weight loss but of maintaining overall health in general.</p>
<p>According to the <em><a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://academic.oup.com/jn/article/149/10/1742/5512578?login=false">Journal of Nutrition</a></em>, consuming dietary fiber (along with a calorie deficit) is linked to weight loss in those who are obese or overweight.</p>
<p><em><a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/fiber/art-20043983">The Mayo Clinic</a></em> states that fiber can help with healthy weight loss in more ways than one. For example, consuming fiber is associated with more regular digestion and bowel movements, regulated blood sugar levels, and staying full for longer periods of time.</p>

<h3>You may end up consuming more calories</h3>
<p>Oftentimes, we may have the intention of only consuming the meal-replacement shake, but the lack of nutrients, fiber, and whole foods may leave us feeling hungry.</p>
<p>In another article on weight loss shakes, <strong>Ana Reisdorf, MS, RD</strong>, a registered dietitian for <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" href="http://wellnessverge.com/" target="_blank">Wellness Verge</a>, tells <em>Eat This, Not That!</em> that meal-replacements aren&#8217;t a sustainable method for weight loss. They may be high in calories, but with only protein as a digestion-slowing nutrient, these beverages may not make you feel satisfied after drinking them. As a result, you may end up gaining weight by reaching for more food on top of the shake that you drink.</p>

<p>With more than 50,000 dietary supplements on the market, you can just imagine how many of those are marketed as weight-loss products. It&#8217;s a multi-billion-dollar industry. So, trying to find agreement on what the #1 best dietary supplement for weight loss is a toss-up.</p>
<p>Most weight-loss supplements contain such common ingredients as vitamins, minerals, caffeine, fiber, protein, herbs, and other plant compounds purported to burn fat, boost energy, build muscle, lower blood sugar or simply improve nutrition. Many nutritionists and other weight-loss experts have their favorite ingredients, while others think whole foods are the way to go. <strong>So, choosing the one pill, powder, gummy, or drink that may work best for you will require some trial and error.</strong> The #1 dietary supplement that works for others may not work for you, which is why it&#8217;s important to peruse your options—and talk to your doctor—to make a decision that makes sense for your body.</p>
<h2>Do weight loss supplements work?</h2>
<p>Many nutritionists and weight-loss coaches sell their own formulations of their favorite ingredients or certain manufacturers&#8217; products; that alone should make you wary when considering weight-loss supplements recommended by them.</p>
<p>Recent studies have called the efficacy of weight-loss supplements into question, including a large review of 121 placebo-controlled trials of herbal and dietary supplements involving nearly 10,000 adults over 16 years presented recently at The European Congress on Obesity.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our rigorous assessment of the best available evidence finds that there is insufficient evidence to recommend these supplements for weight loss,&#8221; said Erica Bessell, a practicing dietitian, PhD candidate from the University of Sydney in Australia, and lead investigator of the studies, <a href="https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2021-05/eaft-mcs050621.php">in a statement</a>. &#8220;Even though most supplements appear safe for short-term consumption, they are not going to provide weight loss that is clinically meaningful,&#8221; she said.</p>
<p>A similar study published in the <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6683127/"><em>International Journal of Obesity Supplements</em></a> in 2019 focused on efficacy and possible drug interactions of common ingredients used in dietary supplements. That research determined that the effectiveness of weight-loss dietary supplements &#8220;is still inconclusive and the cost of these products can be considerable.&#8221; Study researchers concluded that &#8220;healthy diet and physical activity remain the first-line intervention for weight loss.&#8221;</p>

<p>The best way to ensure weight loss is getting enough dietary fiber from fruits and vegetables, says <strong>Morgyn Clair, RD</strong>, a nutritionist for <a href="https://sprintkitchen.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sprint Kitchen</a>. Problem is, most people don&#8217;t eat enough fiber-rich plants to get the recommended minimum of 25 to 30 grams of fiber a day, so she recommends supplementing.</p>
<p>&#8220;People can easily get this through an over-the-counter supplement like Benefiber,&#8221; she says.</p>
<p>That product is made from a soluble fiber called Inulin (chicory root fiber). Another popular soluble fiber supplement, Metamucil, uses psyllium fiber. If you don&#8217;t want to take a fiber supplement, you can boost your fiber intake by adding flax meal to your soups, salads, and smoothies. &#8220;It&#8217;s an excellent source of fiber for those who have low fiber intake and it&#8217;s tasteless,&#8221; says <strong>Fiorella Di Carlo, RD, CDN</strong>, cooking video host of <a href="https://www.fiorellaeats.com/livinginitalian">Living in Italian</a>.</p>
