It’s almost impossible to scroll through your timeline on the ‘gram without seeing a sponsored post (or several) from your fave celebs and influencers claiming that their brand of choice is the best tea for weight loss.

While it’s appealing to think that something as simple as drinking a tasty tea can help you drop pounds, it’s not a secret weight-loss weapon.

“Although many detox teas make weight-loss claims, few are shown to provide these benefits,” says Emily Pankow Fritz, Ph.D., Principal Scientist at Beachbody.

That doesn’t automatically mean that drinking tea or a tea supplement when embarking on a weight-loss journey = bad.

Certain tea supplements — like Beachbody BEVVY — can support healthy weight loss efforts, thanks to ingredients that are clinically tested to help curb cravings and your appetite.*

But what makes Beachbody BEVVY different than so-called detox teas?

It all comes down to what’s inside.

How Beachbody BEVVY Is Different Than Detox Teas

Detox teas are typically advertised as a way to help the body get rid of “built up” toxins.

Some brands recommend doing a weeklong cleanse to help jump-start the purported toxin purge.

Here’s the thing: If you only drink a detox tea for a week you’ll lose weight and it might seem like it’s working.

“Unfortunately, the weight loss is usually not caused by the tea,” says Fritz. “Rather, the weight loss comes from eating fewer calories during the detox.”

Popular detox teas are also formulated with a variety of ingredients that can affect the body in different ways.

Some detox teas may contain ingredients that can be harsh or negatively impact some people, says Sarah Glinski, R.D. These ingredients can include:

High levels of caffeine

Senna, an herb known for its laxative effect

That said, BEVVY isn’t a detox tea.

“We’re all about helping people achieve their goals in a healthy way,” says Fritz. “BEVVY isn’t meant to eliminate toxins from your body, and we don’t suggest people use it as a replacement to food in a detox program or a cleanse.”

Instead, Beachbody BEVVY is a healthy tea supplement that was designed to be a tasty addition to your weight-loss efforts with ingredients shown to have a real impact on cravings.*

How Does Beachbody BEVVY Support Weight Loss?

Real, sustainable weight loss comes from proper diet and exercise — not a detox tea. But even a perfect routine can get thrown off track by cravings.

That’s where BEVVY comes in.

“BEVVY was designed based on the needs of our customers, using clinically studied ingredients to help support weight loss and curb cravings,” says Fritz.*

The easy-to-transport tea supplement — which comes in lemon and pomegranate berry flavors — contains only 15 calories per serving and 8 mg of caffeine.

You simply mix it with cold (not hot!) water 30 minutes before a meal.

But the real stars of Beachbody BEVVY are the three active ingredients inside:

Brewer’s yeast peptides. Brewer’s yeast peptides start from the material used in baking and beer-making, but they are further broken down using a proprietary process to create these clinically studied peptides, that when taken consistently 2 times per day, help curb cravings and decrease food intake. An 8-week clinical study showed that when taken twice daily, the benefits of these peptides on appetite control (caloric intake) showed improvements in weeks 1 to 3, remained steady in weeks 3 to 6, and got even better by weeks 7 to 8 of the study.‡*

Green tea phytosomes. A complex of green tea extract and sunflower lecithin, has been studied to help support healthy weight loss.*

Fiber. Bevvy is formulated with 3g of non-GMO soluble corn fiber, which helps you meet your daily fiber goals and help you feel fuller for longer.

By drinking Beachbody BEVVY daily, you can stay on track to meet your goals without worrying about the — ahem — tummy and toilet troubles that can come with drinking detox teas for weight loss.

All-natural drinks for weight loss are a hot topic, from the coffee with lemon juice rumor to the chia-seed-in-water trend that nutrition pros actually got behind this week. But, with all these experimental diet drinks suddenly catching buzz thanks to TikTok, there’s a unique tea that one source suggests has been a “best kept secret for weight loss” for ages.

Keep reading to learn about the Chinese tea that science has actually shown might boost weight loss efforts. Also, read up on what two dietitians are saying is the #1 best yogurt for your gut health.

Shutterstock

For sure, you can’t believe every weight loss tip you read. So, when we saw that an Indian news source was suggesting puerh tea has some power to support weight loss, we dug a little deeper to find out if this was the real deal.

Turns out, it seems like this puerh tea (also referred to as “pu-erh” or “pu erh” tea, and pronounced “pooh-air”) could show some effect if you’re trying to lose weight.

NDTV.com said puerh tea comes from the Yunnan district of China and is cultivated from the Camellia sinensis—the same plant as green tea, black tea, and oolong tea.

The source also notes that similar to oolong tea, puerh tea is fermented. However, puehr tea goes through an additional process after fermentation, wherein its leaves are sun-dried in a humid environment.

NDTV.com calls puerh tea “China’s best kept secret for weight loss,” and that may not be a gimmick. The source explains that puerh tea “is said to block your body from producing more fat” and is regarded for its roles in digestion and cleansing the blood of toxins and blood fat (better known in the U.S. as cholesterol).

But does this hold up? According to Healthline, it really might. The outlet cites one 2011 Japanese study with 36 participants that found when it was administered over 12 weeks, puerh tea “exhibited significant effects in reducing the mean waist circumference, BMI, and visceral fat values and might be useful for weight control and prevention of obesity development (or metabolic syndrome) in humans,” as the study’s team of cardiovascular researchers concluded.

This could be due to the tea’s fermentation process and those effects on the gut microbiome—you can read more about that in One Major Effect Pickle Juice Has on Your Gut, Says Science.

Shutterstock

Looking to see if this could work for you? Sources note that puerh tea is often sold in this “cake” form. One place to look for it could be an Asian grocery store, or you may find puerh tea online.

In the study we cited, participants drank tea made with 333 milligrams (or 0.01 ounces) of puerh tea leaves three times a day—all before they ate a meal.

I think we can all agree that it would be nice to have a miracle drink for weight loss, one where we could just take a few sips and instantly shed the pounds.

But sadly, this doesn’t exist. And even though there isn’t a miracle weight loss beverage for us to enjoy, there are types of drinks that can help support our goals as we pursue a healthy lifestyle.

Tea is one of the most talked-about of these “weight loss drinks,” so we decided to learn as much as we can about why it’s so highly talked about among those wanting to lose weight.

To do this, we spoke to Lauren Manaker, MS, RDN, author of The First Time Mom’s Pregnancy Cookbook and Fueling Male Fertility and member of the Eat This, Not That! Medical Expert Board, and her response? That she supports using tea for weight loss as long as it’s coupled with a healthy diet.

Read on to learn more about what Manaker has to say on how tea can help you lose weight, and for more healthy eating tips, make sure to sign up for our newsletter to get daily recipes and food news in your inbox!

What makes drinking green tea so effective for weight loss

The natural ingredients found in certain teas can make them great for supporting weight loss and weight management. For example, according to Manaker, “green tea contains catechins, which are antioxidants that have been linked to fat loss and an increased metabolism.”

There are different types of catechins found in green tea, and one of the most predominant is known as EGCG. Many researchers attribute most of green tea’s health benefits to its high quantity of catechins like EGCG.

Catechins in green tea have been known to support weight loss in a multitude of ways, including shrinking fat cells, blocking the formation of new fat cells, and regulating blood sugar.

Green tea isn’t the only tea for weight loss

Shutterstock

According to Manaker, “other teas, like black and oolong, have been shown to support weight loss too.” There hasn’t been as much research done on these types of tea as there has been for green tea, but current data shows they can still be helpful for your goals.

A study from the Chinese Journal of Integrative Medicine discovered that obese and overweight participants who consumed a daily serving of oolong tea for six weeks saw a decrease in body fat. Part of oolong’s health benefits could be attributed to its catechin content as well, but green tea still contains the highest amount.

A recent study published in the European Journal of Nutrition found surprising results related to black tea and its potential weight loss benefits as well.

Researchers in this study learned that black tea might actually be able to alter the bacteria in your gut, which can attribute to weight loss. However, this study was performed on mice, so more research still needs to be done.

How you drink your tea matters

Teas like green, oolong, and black can be great for supporting your weight loss goals, but Manaker reminds us that how you drink your tea makes a huge difference.

“If the tea is replacing caloric drinks like regular sodas, any variety would likely be a good choice when supporting weight loss,” says Manaker, “and as long as the tea isn’t being enjoyed with a large amount of sugar, honey, cream, or other caloric additions, it can be a fantastic choice for weight loss support as well as overall health support.”

So when reaching for a cup of tea to help you with your weight loss goals, just remember that although it can help you, it’s your daily food, movement, and sleep choices that make all the difference.

What Is Butterfly Pea Flower Tea?

Blue pea flower tea is a mesmerizingly beautiful drink brewed from dried flowers of the butterfly pea plant (clitoria ternatea), originating from Southeast Asia.

Most teas are black, green, amber, or clear in color, but butterfly pea flower tea starts out striking, dark cobalt blue.

But what does butterfly pea tea taste like?

This tea tastes woody and earthy with a light fragrant smell — after all, you are drinking flowers!

The butterfly pea plant is also a multi-tasker — different cultures have used it as a popular, natural dye for centuries.

What Is Butterfly Pea Flower Tea Good For?

It’s good for making a memorable impression, of course. Besides blueberries, rarely will you see any food so blue in nature.

No wonder the beverage has been taking social media by storm!

You can drink the tea as is or use it in colorful cocktails, lemonades, and boba drinks.

Despite its trendiness, you won’t easily find butterfly pea flowers in the grocery store.

If you want to try it, look to the Internet for dried butterfly pea flowers, powders, or liquid extracts.

3 Butterfly Pea Flower Tea Benefits

Health benefits for butterfly pea flower tea are relatively scant, and you likely won’t drink enough to make a difference.

And if you’re concerned about the electric-blue color, don’t be alarmed.

According to Brittany Crump, M.P.H., R.D.N. at Savor Nutrition, “Butterfly pea tea is safe to consume, and most people do so without any significant side effects.”

1. Butterfly Pea Flower Tea Contains Antioxidant-Like Compounds

Butterfly pea flower contains anthocyanins.

“Anthocyanins are a type of antioxidant-like compound responsible for giving many purple, blue, and red fruits and veggies their vibrant color. They can help you stay healthy,” says Crump.

Antioxidant-like compounds can protect you from free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can vreact with your cells leading to damage.

Other foods containing anthocyanins are blueberries, blackberries, purple cabbage, and red wine.

In general, an antioxidant-rich diet is linked to good health. If you score anthocyanins from a cup of tea, more power to you!

2. Butterfly Pea Flower Tea Is Caffeine-Free

Butterfly pea tea is a herbal tea and considered caffeine-free. That’s great news if you’re sensitive to caffeine.

It’s especially great news if you like to enjoy a cup of hot tea before bed.

3. Butterfly Pea Flower Tea Changes Color

The sorcery of butterfly pea tea doesn’t end there: Add a splash of lemon or lime to the liquid brew, and it will change from deep blue to pretty magenta-purple right before your eyes!

That’s because the anthocyanins in butterfly pea flowers react to changes in pH. Acidic ingredients (e.g., lemon, lime) lowers the pH causing the blue to morph into purple.

In theory, basic ingredients can make blue butterfly pea tea green, but it’s not commonly practiced.

How to Make Butterfly Pea Flower Tea

You don’t really need a recipe for tea. Simply drop dried butterfly pea tea flowers into boiling water and let them steep for three to five minutes.

We recommend a ratio of 1 cup water to 1 tablespoon of dried flowers. Then, strain out the flowers and enjoy your tea!
