Whether you prefer to pump iron in the gym or pump your legs on a treadmill, it’s vital that your body gets enough iron.

From transporting oxygen to muscles and helping build connective tissue to supporting basic cell function, iron is essential for a healthy body.

Fortunately, getting enough of this key mineral is easy when you know which foods are high in iron.

What Is Iron?

Iron is a naturally occurring mineral and an essential nutrient. This means our bodies need it to function normally but can’t produce it themselves.

Therefore it must be consumed in the diet. Luckily, lots of foods contain iron — including both meat and plant sources — as well as a variety of foods that have been fortified with iron.

Heme vs. non-heme iron

There are two main forms of dietary iron: heme and non-heme. Heme iron is found in red meat, poultry, and seafood, while non-heme iron is mainly found in plant foods.

One other key difference: Heme iron offers higher bioavailability, making it easier for the body to absorb, explains Andrea N. Giancoli, MPH, RD.

To help your body better absorb non-heme iron, pair it with animal products or plant-based foods high in vitamin C, says Giancoli.

Both work to help make non-heme iron better available for absorption.

Fortunately, your body doesn’t differentiate between how it uses heme and non-heme iron. So whether you’re a vegan or carnivore, it’s possible to get all the iron your body needs.

What Does Iron Do for the Body?

“Iron plays a necessary role in many functions within the body,” says Amy Gorin, M.S., R.D.N., owner of Amy Gorin Nutrition in the New York City area. “These include helping to create the hemoglobin that transports oxygen throughout the body, as well as playing a role in the creation of some of the body’s hormones and connective tissue.”

Iron is also necessary for growth and development, normal cellular function, and the formation of myoglobin, a protein that helps provide oxygen to muscles.

How Much Iron Do I Need?

The amount of iron you need depends on a number of factors including your age, sex, and diet.

For adult men, the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) is 8 mg per day.

Adult, premenopausal women, however, require considerably more iron — 18 mg per day — due to what’s lost to menstruation.

The RDA for vegetarians and vegans is nearly twice as high, since non-heme iron from plants offers less bioavailability.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has set its own daily values (DV) for labeling of foods based on their highest RDA values.

So the DV for iron is 18 mg for Americans over 4 years of age.

Can you get too much iron?

“It is possible to get too much iron, but not typically from food,” explains Giancoli. “The gut helps to regulate iron absorption, so unless you have some kind of malabsorption in the gut, it’s very difficult to get too much iron from food.”

Iron supplements are often the culprit in rare cases of iron overload, and can cause gastric upset, constipation, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, and faintness.

How do I know if I have an iron deficiency?

Although iron deficiency is the most prevalent nutritional deficiency in the U.S., it’s still relatively rare.

Some groups including teen girls and women with heavy menstrual flows, pregnant women, regular blood donors, and those with cancer, heart failure, or gastrointestinal disorders face a higher risk of iron deficiency.

Research has also found that some ethnic groups such as Black and Mexican-American females face a higher risk.

“Having inadequate iron may go unnoticed unless you get blood work done,” says Giancoli.

A true iron deficiency, on the other hand, can often lead to iron-deficiency anemia and more severe symptoms, explains Gorin. “Symptoms of anemia include fatigue, pale skin, irritability, low appetite, and feelings of lightheadedness.”

Severe anemia can also lead to gastrointestinal issues, impaired cognitive function and immune function, and trouble regulating one’s own body temperature.

Ask your doctor for a blood test if you’re concerned you may have an iron deficiency.

16 Good Sources of Iron

So which iron food sources should you be consuming to keep your body functioning optimally?

According to the FDA, a food can be considered “high” in or “an excellent source” of iron if it contains 20 percent or more of the DV (3.6 mg) and a “good source” of iron if it contains 10 to 19 percent of the DV (1.8 to 3.5 mg).

Whether you’re a meat eater, a veggie lover, or both, there’s a wide variety of iron-rich foods that can help you meet your body’s daily needs.

1. Liver

Iron: varies | Serving: 3 oz., cooked

Liver may not be part of your normal weeknight dinner rotation, but you’ll get a whopping 10 mg of iron from chicken liver and 6 mg from braised beef liver.

2. Tofu

Iron: 7 mg | Serving: ½ cup, raw

This same serving of tofu also delivers 10 g of protein and 40 percent of the DV for calcium.

3. Fortified breakfast cereals

Iron: varies | Serving: varies based on density

Many breakfast cereals are fortified with 100 percent (or more) of the DV for iron. Be sure to check the label to ensure it’s low in sugar too.

4. Dark chocolate

Iron: 3.4 mg | Serving: 1 oz.

Twist our arm — an ounce of dark chocolate (70–85 percent cacao solids) is a delicious way to get 19 percent of your RDA if you’re a woman and 43 percent if you’re a man.

5. Beef

Iron: varies | Serving: 3 oz., cooked

Red meat’s a good source of iron, but the amount depends on the cut. A serving of chuck provides 3 mg of iron, while the same amount of ground beef contains 2.5 mg.

6. Oysters

Iron: 8 mg | Serving: 3 oz., cooked

Three ounces of Eastern oysters (also known as the Atlantic oyster, Virginia oyster, or American oyster) are an excellent source of iron and are off the charts in zinc content.

7. White beans

Iron: 4 mg | Serving: ½ cup, canned

A half cup of canned white beans such as cannellini or great northern beans is an excellent source of iron that also contains 10 g of protein and 6 g of fiber.

8. Morel mushrooms

Iron: 4 mg | Serving: ½ cup, raw

Look for morel mushrooms, noted for their honeycomb appearance, fresh at farmers markets in mid to late spring, or dried at your local grocery store.

9. Pumpkin seeds

Iron: 3 mg | Serving: 1 oz., dried

Not only high in iron, pumpkin seeds also boast healthy magnesium, zinc, and copper values, and contain more protein than they do carbohydrates.

10. Lentils

Iron: 3 mg | Serving: ½ cup, cooked

For added convenience, look for pre-cooked lentils in the refrigerated section of your grocery store to add to salads, sides, or soups.

11. Spinach

Iron: 3 mg | Serving: ½ cup, cooked

Popeye was on to something! Mix spinach into scrambled eggs or serve with roast chicken to help your body more efficiently use this source of non-heme iron.

12. Kidney beans

Iron: 3 mg | Serving: ½ cup, cooked

Add kidney beans to your next batch of chili, soup, or curry and you’ll not only get a good source of iron, but also 8 g of protein and 7 g of fiber.

13. Sardines

Iron: 3 mg | Serving: 3.75 oz., canned

Drain the oil and add sardines to pizzas, pasta dishes, or a homemade Caesar dressing.

14. Chickpeas

Iron: 2 mg | Serving: ½ cup, cooked

Whether you call them chickpeas or garbanzo beans, pop them in the oven with spices for a crunchy snack or make your own DIY hummus.

15. Potatoes

Iron: 2 mg | Serving: 1 large potato, baked

You’ll have to eat the whole potato (flesh and skin!) to derive its full complement of iron.

16. Enriched egg noodles

Iron: 2 mg | Serving: 1 cup, cooked

Ordinarily whole-grain pasta is preferable, but the added iron (as well as thiamin, niacin, riboflavin, and folic acid) makes egg noodles a good source of the mineral.

17. Cashews

Iron: 2 mg | Serving: 1 oz.

Roasted or raw, cashews are not only a good source of iron but also heart-healthy fats.

Weight loss is not easy but with the right lifestyle choices—like eating well-balanced meals and getting enough exercise throughout the day, for example—you can potentially achieve wonderful results. But the best place to start is in the kitchen.

When it comes to losing weight, “your best bet is to eat proper proportions of all food groups to fuel your body in the right way,” advises Lauren Manaker, MS, RDN, LD, CLEC, award-winning registered dietitian and Eat This, Not That! Expert Board member. While there is no one food that will force you to gain or lose weight, there are some common food pairings that may not help in the long run.

Based on the ancient holistic science of healing from India, Ayurveda, certain food combinations should be avoided because they can cause inconsistent digestion and possible weight gain. According to Healthline, there are two main components that are believed to be why specific foods shouldn’t be combined. One, combining foods with different digestive enzymes can cause fluctuations in pH levels (or levels of acidity) in your gut. And two, combining foods that require different digestive speeds can also cause negative effects on health and the body’s digestive system.

Find out if your daily diet includes any of these common food pairings that are causing confusion in your gut or disturbing your digestion and hindering weight loss.

When your digestive system is out of wack, your stomach lining can be damaged and weight gain can occur due to a mismanagement of calories. A combination of bananas and milk specifically, is one example of a food pairing that may cause a poor outcome for your body.

According to The Ayurveda Institute, even though “both of these foods have a sweet taste and a cooling energy, their post-digestive effect is very different.” Researchers from the institute explain that this combo can cause “confusion to the digestive system, which can result in toxins, allergies, and other imbalances within the body.”

This classic breakfast staple, that many enjoy, may not be as great of a choice as you may think. If you are combining two foods that are a part of the same food group, such as carbohydrates, you have a stronger chance of overeating one nutrient and missing out on overall essential dietary needs.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

“Toast with jam is carbs on carbs. You are better off adding some nut butter to help provide some protein and healthy fats,” says Manaker. The overconsumption of processed, calorie-dense carbohydrates, in particular, can cause a spike in the body’s blood sugar (also known as glucose), she goes on to explain. Weight gain can be a result of too many carbs, as your body breaks down all the excess glucose into fat.

Shutterstock

While this may break your heart to read, eating chips and salsa can possibly set you back in your weight loss goals. “I advise against eating foods that don’t have a balance of the aforementioned core nutrients (fiber, fat, and protein),” says Lisa Moskovitz, RD, CDN, another registered dietitian, CEO of NY Nutrition Group, and author of The Core 3 Healthy Eating Plan.

Unfortunately, the chips and salsa food combo not only has a high salt content but can also lead to overeating (and further weight gain), because of a lack of healthy fats or protein to help foster the body’s sense of fullness. Moskovitz suggests that eating excess calories—especially carbs and sugar—can contribute to weight gain over time. Instead, try dipping some low-sodium tortilla chips in guacamole to provide your body with a well-rounded combination of nutrients (e.i. healthy fats and complex carbs) and more satiety.

A dish that brings comfort to our hearts, but is not at all supportive when you’re trying to lose weight. “Most canned tomato soups are surprisingly high in sugar, thanks to added high fructose corn syrup, and grilled cheese is high in fat and carbs, but offers little protein,” said Jennifer Christman, a registered dietitian at Medifast, in an interview with Woman’s Day.

If you consume large amounts of any kind of sugar, including high fructose corn syrup, the “unwanted calories that are linked to health problems, such as weight gain,” according to MayoClinic.

Plus, it doesn’t help that both, the cheese (in the grilled cheese) and tomato soup, contain sodium levels that are through the roof. High sodium foods tend to lead to other health problems besides weight gain—including high blood pressure, stroke, and heart disease—Harvard Health reported.

Shutterstock

Research tends to support oatmeal as a prime contender in weight loss. However, “eating oatmeal and dried fruit alone will offer some fiber, but very little protein and fat.” Moskovitz explains, “this combo can also increase blood sugar and spike insulin, a potentially fat-storing hormone.”

“Instead, add in a lean protein and fats, such as Greek yogurt, nuts, and seeds to balance it out [and] keep blood sugar stable,” Moskovitz recommends this solution for better weight loss results.

We come across friends, family, peers, and colleagues. The majority of them want to lose weight. Unfortunately, due to lifestyle changes and food intake, people are gaining weight across age groups. However, weight loss is more challenging than gaining weight. Somehow, the weight creeps in through our bodies, and when we realise that we are overweight, it becomes tough to shed our set patterns. However, the secret is dietary modification and lifestyle changes.

Weight reduction is often associated with sophisticated meals such as salads and drinks. But one can approach it differently. Interestingly there is an easy way out. Even though it seems monotonous and excessive, eating the same foods daily can help you lose weight.

How Does it Work?

A more varied diet can be related to fat storage and weight gain. It is especially true when one consumes a variety of snacks rather than just one. Furthermore, diverse tastes and textures might lead to overeating. Eating a broad range of meals might lead to eating more and consuming more calories in general. If you don’t get used to what you eat regularly, you’re more inclined to consume food for pleasure. Instead of curbing hunger, food becomes an outlet for a sensory experience. Also, our customs and cultures associate food with togetherness, celebrations and expression of emotion. So, we embrace overeating as a habit that ultimately leads to weight gain. When we restrict ourselves to eating a few food items, we tend to eat less.

When you have fewer options, it’s easier to pay attention to your body’s signals and recognise when you’re full. Binge eating and not knowing when you’re full are two common reasons for weight gain.

Pros of Eating Same Food

Increased Intake of Nutrients

A diet consisting of a few nutrient-dense items can easily outperform a diet composed of many less nutritious options. Since eating the same meal can be restrictive, you’re more inclined to stick to home cooking rather than going out. This meal should consist of quantities of vegetables, fruit, nuts, whole grains, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and omega-3 fatty acids. On the other hand, it should reduce the intake of processed foods, refined carbohydrates, and sugar-sweetened drinks.

Reduced Calorie Intake

When it comes to weight gain, calories are a significant determinant. As per studies, food habituation lowers total calorie intake in people when they repeatedly eat the same meals. Habituation refers to learning wherein a person’s response decreases with repeated exposure to stimuli. The presence of an extensive range of foods to try leads to inadvertently postponed feelings of fullness or contentment from your meal, causing you to eat more. As per research, consuming the same meals daily assists 66 % of American adults who are overweight or obese lower their calorie consumption.

Reduces Stress

Consuming the same item daily reduces the stress of meal planning and food preparation and establishes a routine and an order. Due to the busy modern lifestyle, adults today already have plenty of prior engagements. Therefore, not worrying about deciding on the type of meal helps relieve stress and simplify things to maintain a balanced diet. Furthermore, concentrating on limited types of products and using them to make meals throughout the week is a good strategy. It ensures that all the food items you purchase get utilised and nothing goes to waste.

Cons of Eating the Same food

Increased Pesticide Exposure

There are also drawbacks to lowering diversity in your diet: increased pesticide exposure. Our source for specific food items like vegetables or fruits remains the same. These food items can have chemicals such as pesticides and insecticides. Repeatedly buying the same food item for consumption can result in the constant intake of these chemicals. Therefore, if you eat the same food items every day, getting the most excellent quality is essential. It’s a good idea to buy organic foods. It will lead to fewer pesticides and other toxins. Aside from opting for organic, it’s crucial to be mindful of foods that might be dangerous in large concentrations.

Contributes to Food Intolerance

The gut microbiome may suffer due to a lack of diversity in your diet. Your microbiome alters when you consume a substantial amount of the same diet over a longer time. A lack of diversity may exacerbate intolerances and sensitivities. Food intolerances and sharpness can increase by a diet that is extremely limited in variety. Your stomach may produce less of the enzymes needed to break them down. Moreover, this can further result in experiencing physical problems such as pains, etc., when eating items you don’t eat otherwise.

Slowed Metabolism

Eating the same meal daily might result in a slowed metabolism, which is bad in the long term. The things you consume regularly affect your metabolism. Food digestion is a metabolic factor that contributes to your daily energy requirements. Therefore if you consume the same item regularly, your daily metabolic output will be the same. On eating more food than needed, the body’s basal metabolism increases slightly to compensate. Eat less, and your weight will drop, but your energy consumption will decline. As a result, it decreases your basal metabolism to compensate for your intake shortage.

Foods to Add to Your Daily Diet

Lean Protein

A high-protein diet can assist you to control your hunger, allowing you to lose weight. You can lower the hunger hormone ‘ghrelin’ and increase multiple satiety hormones by substituting carbs and fat with protein. As a result, there is a significant reduction in appetite, which is how primarily protein aids weight loss. It can make you instinctively consume fewer calories. Protein is essential for healthy growth and development and the maintenance of muscular mass. Having protein-rich food in every meal can help maintain blood sugar levels and prevent blood sugar spikes. It is a regular occurrence when you consume carbohydrates exclusively. Intake of protein daily can boost concentration and energy levels in a person.

Protein requirements vary depending on gender, age, and weight. Furthermore, protein requirements differ depending on the amount and type of activity a person engages in and whether or not they are pregnant or breastfeeding. As per studies, an adult requires 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight every day. Food items containing protein include eggs, chicken, soy, legumes, beans etc.

Cruciferous Vegetables

Add cruciferous vegetables. They have low-calorie content and are rich in fibre. They give the feeling of being fuller for longer and prevent overeating. Intake of vegetables keeps the calorie count under check. With time, this can result in a reduction of overall caloric consumption and weight loss.

Glucosinolates are sulphurous chemicals found in cruciferous plants. These are good for your health. As per studies, glucosinolates have anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties, influencing cell networks and genes. Glucosinolates prevent cancer from spreading by changing the enzymes involved, avoiding the transcription process, and stopping cellular proliferation. It also protects against myocardial infarction and other inflammatory illnesses due to its anti-inflammatory properties. The chemicals could also aid in the treatment and prevention of metabolic syndrome.

According to the USDA, people should consume 1.5 to 2.5 cups of cruciferous vegetables every week. As per studies. Three servings of vegetables slow down ageing and a reduced risk of diseases such as slowed cognitive activities, Alzheimer’s etc. Cruciferous vegetables include broccoli, radish, cauliflowers etc.

Nuts and Seeds

According to research, eating nuts can be helpful to one’s health. Nuts are nutrient-rich foods that have no negative impact on weight. Indeed, when they are used to substitute other less nutritious items in the diet, they can aid in weight loss. Even though nuts contain many calories, research suggests that our body doesn’t absorb all these fats. It is due to a percentage of fat staying within the nut’s fibrous wall during digestion. It’s a common belief that nuts lead to weight gain due to fat content. However, fats related to health concerns are saturated and trans fats. Most nuts are high in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. These are healthy fats.

Olive Oil

Olive oil, particularly extra virgin olive oil, is an effective weight-loss component. Crushing or cold-pressing olives and removing the fresh fat from the fruit yields extra virgin olive oil. It is the best grade olive oil. It is unrefined and unadulterated, and rich in monounsaturated fatty acids. These fatty acids aid weight loss, maintain a healthy heart and keep blood sugar levels constant. In addition, it encourages satiety, which keeps people from binge eating other processed or trans-fat sources that are high in empty calories.

Yoghurt

Yoghurt, which is high in calcium and protein, provides various benefits to overall gut health and weight loss. It enhances metabolism due to its high protein content. As a result, it aids in burning a significant amount of calories throughout the day. Yoghurt’s protein helps lose weight by giving the feeling of being full for a long time. Therefore, protein in yoghurt can help with weight loss by promoting fat and calorie burn and managing the appetite.

Precautionary Measures

It’s advisable to buy organic food items. Organic will reduce your exposure to chemicals and pesticides whether you eat the same item every day or a diversified diet. Ensure that all key dietary groups are included in your daily meal: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy, lean protein, and healthy fats. Having the same hearty diet every day can help with weight loss, but only if you follow it for a short period. If you wish to stick to the diet in the long run, talk to a dietitian beforehand.

The Bottom Line

Eating the same food regularly helps to boost the weight loss process. However, it’s essential to include only healthy foods in your daily meal. Furthermore, you cannot undermine the importance of physical activities and an active lifestyle for weight loss. Therefore, it’s essential to balance and consume healthy food and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Sustainable seafood was a trend in 2021 and it isn’t going anywhere.

Listen, we know life gets busy and it’s not always possible to have access to whole foods. This is where convenience-type snacks come into play.
Nootropics are a class of substances that may boost brain function, memory, focus, creativity and motivation. There are both natural and synthetic (supplement) forms of nootropics. Here are some nootropic supplements to consider:

Sprouted grain bread, like Ezekiel bread, is packed with fiber, which also keeps you feeling satisfied and squashes hunger. Top your smashed avocado with cayenne pepper, which contains capsaicin, an appetite suppressant. A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that capsaicin induces satiety, which can help reduce caloric intake. Plus, researchers have found that capsaicin can help you lose belly fat.

When it comes to stellar food combinations, apples and peanut butter are a classic go-to that can help you lose weight. Peanut butter contains monounsaturated fat, which can help you slim down by keeping you feeling full, and polyunsaturated fats, which can help improve insulin metabolism. Spread your favorite peanut butter (preferably with just peanuts and salt as the ingredients) on an apple, which is chock-full of fiber, a nutrient that can help reduce visceral fat. Top with a sprinkle of cinnamon, which contains antioxidants called polyphenols that can help keep blood sugar stable and prevent the spikes and crashes that can lead to weight gain. Cinnamaldehyde, the ingredient which gives cinnamon its flavor (and name), can also help people lose belly fat; in a Scientific Reports study, Japanese researchers gave mice a daily dose of cinnamaldehyde. Those who ate the cinnamaldehyde had a decrease in belly fat.

Tea is a magical drink proven to help you slim down and blast belly fat. Green tea, in particular, is high in the antioxidant ECGC, a compound that can burn fat. It’s also rich in catechins, another antioxidant that can promote the release of fat from fat cells, and can help your liver turn fat into energy. Squeeze a lemon in your green tea, which contains pectin and polyphenols, both of which have been proven to help people feel fuller and lose weight. Add in a sprig of mint, which is a proven appetite suppressant.

Greek yogurt is like the MVP of yogurts, and for good reason. It’s packed with protein (20 grams in a 7-ounce serving), which can help you build fat-burning muscle. It has a healthy dose of vitamin D and calcium, both of which can help turn off the fat-producing stress hormone cortisol. Jazz up your boring plain yogurt with raspberries, antioxidant-rich berries that contain polyphenols, which researchers have proven can help stop the formation of fat cells. Top with a few almonds for a salty crunch. A study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association found that people who ate just 1.5 ounces of almonds a day had a reduction in leg and belly fat.

One of the easiest ways to boost weight loss is to play with food combinations via delicious detox water. Not only will flavoring H2O with some tasty and all-natural ingredients make you drink more of this flat-belly fluid, you can pack a one-two punch with extra metabolism-boosting nutrients. Try adding in slices of cucumber, which are high in vitamins C and K. Squeeze in some lemon for an appetite suppressant, and those slimming polyphenols.

Eating a diet rich in high-fiber whole grains can help you lose weight, so start your day off with a bowl of oatmeal. Researchers have found that high amounts of insoluble fiber will help you shut off hunger and feel satisfied for longer. Top with a handful of blueberries, which are rich in antioxidants like polyphenols and can help blast away belly fat. A study out of the University of Michigan found that rats who had blueberry powder mixed into their meals had less abdominal fat than rats on a berry-free diet after 90 days. Sprinkle on some insulin-controlling cinnamon for a filling breakfast that will melt away the pounds.

Eggs are a satisfying choice when it comes to a meal or snack, thanks to the protein content (about 6 grams per large egg). And not only will the protein help you lose weight, but so will the amino acid arginine. A study published in the Journal of Dietary Supplements found that obese women who were given arginine over a 12-week period lose an average of 7 centimeters from their waists, and dropped an average of 6.5 pounds. Eat them along with a hearty serving of spinach, which is rich in filling fiber and muscle-boosting iron. Researchers also found that people who consumed thylakoids, the green leaf membranes found in spinach, lost more weight than a placebo group, according to the study published in the journal Appetite. Drizzle with avocado oil, a light-tasting oil rich in satisfying monounsaturated fats.

Since lean protein helps build muscle and burn fat, incorporating healthy proteins into your diet is key for weight loss. Wild salmon is one of the best choices because it’s rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which have anti-inflammatory and fat-burning properties. Pair with a side of sweet potatoes, slow carbs that keep you feeling fuller longer. The yummy yams also contain the antioxidants carotenoids, which stabilize blood sugar and can help insulin levels. Top with a dollop of a yogurt-based sauce to get some extra calcium, vitamin C, and protein.

Shutterstock

White meat chicken is also another great source of lean protein, which helps you not only boost muscle but also feel fuller. Pair chicken breast with a leafy green like kale. Research shows people who eat more high-volume, low-calorie greens have lower BMIs and smaller waistlines. Throw in a whole grain like barley for an extra punch of filling fiber and some extra protein.

Looking for a filling, fat-burning lunch? Turn to lentil soup. A study in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found people who ate a daily serving of pulses as part of a calorie-restricted diet lost more weight than those who ate the same amount of calories but didn’t include as many legumes. The broth can also help boost weight loss by filling you up without the unwanted extra calories. Add in some anti-inflammatory tomatoes, which can also help you reverse leptin resistance, leading to more weight loss.

Shutterstock

A melon-rich fruit salad isn’t just a colorful breakfast or side dish; it can help you lose weight, too. Watermelon is one of our best fruits for fat loss because it improves lipid profiles, and can lower fat accumulation. Pair with honeydew melon, which is a natural diuretic that can help you shed some water weight. Top with fresh mint leaves to help with digestion and turn fat into energy.

Think steak is off-limits on a diet? Think again! Grass-fed steak is rich in the amino acid leucine, which can help build lean muscle mass and burn excess fat. Grass-fed meats also have healthy omega-3s, fatty acids that can help reduce inflammation. Enjoy with a side of Jerusalem artichokes, or sunchokes. They’re rich in gut-healthy insoluble fiber called oligofructose, which has been proven to suppress hunger and aid in weight loss. Season with fresh garlic, an anti-inflammatory bulb that has been proven to help lower BMI, according to a study in the journal Nutrition Research and Practice.

Skip the casein protein powder and opt for cottage cheese, which is rich in the dairy derivative. It’s also a slow-digesting protein that will leave you feeling fuller longer and can help you get better sleep with the amino acid tryptophan. Pair it with antioxidant-rich berries, like strawberries or raspberries, and top with a handful of almonds for some extra protein and healthy fats.

Like green tea, white tea can also help you slim down. A study published in the Journal of Nutrition & Metabolism found that white tea can boost the breakdown of fat, and slow the formation of fat cells. It’s also rich in antioxidants that help the liver turn fat into energy. Flavor your tea with some fresh ginger, which has anti-inflammatory properties. A study published in the journal Metabolism found that ginger helps reduce feelings of hunger, which can help with weight loss.
Cruciferous vegetables, like cauliflower, are good sources of fiber, which keeps you feeling full and can aid in weight loss. It’s also thermogenic, which means your body burns more calories digesting it than other vegetables. Sautee this healthy veggie in avocado oil; the combo of healthy fats and filling fiber will make for a satisfying meal. It’s even more filling on a bed of quinoa as this ancient grain is a complete protein, which can boost fat loss. According to a study published in the journal Food Chemistry, quinoa has the highest level of the amino acid betaine, which speeds up your metabolism and fights fat. And if you are looking to improve your diet and shed weight, our advice is to take it slow so you actually keep it off.

White potatoes have gotten a bad rap, but when in enjoyed in moderation (and cooked in a healthy way), they can help you lose weight. Spuds are full of potassium, which helps banish belly bloat, and they can help with hunger pangs; Australian researchers found that potatoes are more filling than fiber-rich brown rice and oatmeal. But be careful how you make them — bake, don’t deep fry, in heart-healthy olive oil, and top with pepper, which contains piperine that can help lower cholesterol levels.

Shutterstock

Protein-rich eggs are not only good for muscle-building, but they can also help you zap fat thanks to the compound l-arginine. Top with some spicy cayenne pepper hot sauce. The capsaicin found in hot peppers has been proven to suppress appetite and boost your body’s ability to burn fat as energy. Enjoy with half a grapefruit. There’s a reason this tart citrus fruit was part of a popular fad diet; it’s rich in phytochemicals, which can help in adiponectin production and help the body with fat breakdown. It’s a complete breakfast that will put your body into fat-burning mode.

Eating healthy doesn’t mean you should cut out dessert. In fact, adding in some dark chocolate could actually help you lose weight. Dark chocolate (at least 70% cacao) is full of antioxidants, especially flavanols, and has anti-inflammatory properties. Flavanols can prevent people from gaining weight, according to a study published in the journal BMJ, and may increase energy expenditure. Double up on the antioxidants by pairing the dark chocolate with berries, which also contain flavanols. Add in filling walnuts, which are chock-full of good polyunsaturated fats, and can reduce fat storage and improve insulin metabolism.

Make a healthy twist on a burrito bowl with a quinoa base. The ancient grain contains the amino acid lysine, which not only helps burn fat but also helps maintain healthy bones and skin. It also has a complete chain of amino acids that can help build muscle, which, you guessed it, also burns fat. Mix in some fiber-rich black beans, which can help you not only feel more satisfied but also feed your healthy gut bacteria to prevent inflammation. Top with about ¼ of an avocado for satiating healthy fats. This is one of our favorite food combinations because it makes for a balanced meal without compromising on taste!

There are two types of people in the world: those who go to bed thinking about what they’re going to eat for breakfast, and those who don’t. And for those breakfast-lovers out there, they know that what they choose to eat can either make or break their morning.

If you’re a breakfast lover who is also trying to lose weight or stick to a similar type of health goal, finding healthy breakfast food that you can still get excited about can sometimes be a challenge.

The key to choosing breakfast foods to lose weight, especially around your abdominal area, is making sure you get enough protein. For example, a great way to start your day is with some eggs and avocado on whole-grain toast, or Greek yogurt with berries and nut butter.

But what about certain foods that you should avoid if you’re trying to lose belly fat? According to Trista Best, MPH, RD, LD at Balance One Supplements, one breakfast food that you may want to limit or avoid when trying to lose abdominal fat are breakfast pastries.

Continue reading to learn more about how refined carbs like breakfast pastries can derail your weight loss goals, and for more healthy eating tips, check out Best Eating Habits to Shrink Belly Fat.

Why you should avoid breakfast pastries if you want to lose belly fat.

Shutterstock

“Breakfast pastries like processed and pre-packaged toaster pastries, donuts, and even some meal replacement bars can be stalling your weight loss efforts, especially because weight gain around the belly is easily exacerbated by a diet containing refined carbohydrates and sugar,” says Best.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

While eating a decadent, fluffy pastry in the morning can be satisfying in the moment, Best warns that there really isn’t much nutritional value to them at all, which may be detrimental to your health goals over time.

“These pastries are calorie-dense and loaded with ingredients that will lead to inflammation, glucose spikes, and subsequent crashes, as well as only temporary relief from hunger,” says Best, “and this may lead to overeating on other foods soon after consuming breakfast pastries with little to no valuable nutrients.”

Best also points out that eating foods that are low in nutritional value, especially in the morning hours, can “leave you feeling hungry and fatigued throughout the rest of the day.”

The link between refined carbs and belly fat

While refined carbohydrates like breakfast pastries can have an immediate impact on your glucose levels and energy, they can also contribute to more belly fat over time if consumed on a regular basis.

For example, one study recently published in The Journal of Nutrition found a connection between regular consumption of refined carbohydrates and more weight around the abdominal area. This same study also found that replacing refined carbohydrates with whole grains could help improve abdominal weight gain, as well as lower your risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

You certainly don’t have to avoid breakfast pastries forever, especially if eating them brings you joy in the morning. However, Best suggests making some adjustments in how you consume them.

“Breakfast pastries should be limited to occasional consumption and replaced with nutrient-dense foods that will fuel your body and set you up for success,” she says.

On the mornings when you do treat yourself to a muffin or a donut, try pairing it with a healthy breakfast food with plenty of lean protein like eggs or low-sugar Greek yogurt.

Want to lose weight fast? The solution is simple: Eat more. Although that may sound counterintuitive, there’s sound food combination science behind our recommendation. But before you get too excited and double-up on ice cream and cookies or sausage biscuits, realize this food pairing trick does have some caveats.

To burn belly fat, you’ll need to pair the right foods together on one plate. Thanks to their complementary nutrients, all the mighty duos below either fry fat, beat bloat, or ignite your metabolism. Why consume just one better-body food when you can eat two and double your weight loss efforts?

Check out our delicious food pairings below to discover some seriously nutritious ideas that boost your health and weight loss! Read on, and for more ideas on what to eat tonight, check out 22 Meals to Melt Belly Fat in 2022.

Shutterstock

Carb pairing is a simple premise: eat a carb and protein at every meal. Why? Pairing healthy sources of protein and healthy complex carbs does more than aid with muscle recovery post-workout. It also keeps you fuller longer. Both protein and healthy fats slow your body’s digestion of sugars, helping to keep your blood sugar from spiking. In this pairing, bananas are your source of carbohydrates and peanut butter is your source of protein and fat.

Whether you squeeze a lemon over your sauteed spinach or add some juice to your morning smoothie, this dynamic duo is going to do wonders for your health. Why? Lemons are a source of vitamin C while spinach is a vegetarian source of non-heme iron. To increase the bioavailability of the dietary iron in the spinach, you have to add vitamin C (also known as ascorbic acid). Vitamin C enhances iron absorption, according to the International Journal for Vitamin and Nutrition Research.

Grab a pepper and a few eggs, and get crackin’! This mighty fat-frying duo is sure to help you fit into your skinny jeans in no time. Eggs contain a metabolism-boosting nutrient called choline, and peppers are a good source of vitamin C. What does vitamin C have to do with weight loss? Getting an adequate amount of the nutrient can help fight off cortisol, a hormone that causes fat to accumulate around the midsection. Chop some peppers, add them to a hot pan with some olive oil, add in two or three eggs and scramble them up to stay slim.

Shutterstock

If you’re trying to lose weight, oatmeal topped with berries is another delicious fat-frying breakfast option you might want to consider. What makes the duo so powerful? They each contain insoluble fiber which, according to Canadian researchers, boosts levels of ghrelin—a hormone that controls hunger. Plus, berries are packed with chemicals called polyphenols that aid weight loss and can actually stop fat from forming. Adding this meal to your weekly repertoire is sure to help you see your six-pack before swimsuit season. And, believe us, the cook time is worth it.

Shutterstock

Fight fat and banish bloating with a fruit salad comprised of honeydew and red grapes. Melon is a natural diuretic, so it helps fight the water retention responsible for making you look puffy even though you have a toned stomach. Red grapes add fuel to the better-belly fire because they contain an antioxidant called anthocyanin that helps calm the action of fat-storage genes. This dynamic duo makes for a delicious, healthy dessert and is sure to turn your two-pack into a six-pack—stat!

Shutterstock

While a snack mix comprised of cereal and pretzels may taste good, it’s not going to give you that tight stomach you crave. Ditch the starchy carbs and replace them with a combination of pistachios and almonds. According to researchers, reaching for these nuts in lieu of carbohydrate-based foods can help speed the rate of weight loss. More good news: A study printed in The Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition found that the amino acid L-arginine, found in almonds, helps the body burn more fat and carbs during workouts, too. So while you’re doubling down on the workouts before spring break, make sure your diet is doing double duty, too!6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

Shutterstock

You’ve almost reached your weight loss goal, but those last few pounds seem to be holding on for dear life. Ditch the last bit of flab with a daily dose of vitamin D-fortified yogurt (we like Stonyfield Organic). A Nutrition Journal study found that diets rich in both calcium and vitamin D can significantly decrease the amount of fat the body absorbs and stores. Why should you add a sprinkle of cinnamon to your container, you ask? Not only does it taste great, but it also contains powerful antioxidants that improve body composition and insulin sensitivity. Animal studies have also found that consuming cinnamon can ward off the accumulation of belly chub. Enjoy this tasty duo as a quick, on-the-go breakfast or an afternoon snack. Just make sure you’re choosing a pot with more protein than sugar.

Shutterstock

If your monster appetite is making it difficult for you to trim down, consider making a sautéed side dish or salad with some olive oil and kale. How will eating these foods help you slim down? Not only is olive oil is rich in monounsaturated fats that help ward off hunger, and high-volume, low-calorie greens like kale help fill you up without filling you out. But the combination of healthy fat with vitamin-rich greens is essential for your body to absorb those fat-soluble vitamins. Vitamin K, in particular, is found in high levels in kale. Vitamin K is necessary to boost cell growth, blood circulation, and bone strength. The thing is, you need the fat from the olive oil to reap all these body-boosting benefits.

Shutterstock

Slightly green bananas are rich in something called resistant starch. This type of starch not only boosts satiety but also—as the name implies—resists digestion. The result: the body has to work harder to digest the food, which promotes fat oxidation and reduces abdominal fat. What’s more, bananas are rich in potassium, a nutrient that helps banish pesky bloat that can make you look less trim and fit than you actually are. Pair this mighty fruit with spinach, a low-cal veggie that boosts satiety and aids post-pump recovery, to create a fat-frying smoothie in just seconds. Simply throw a small banana, two handfuls of spinach and a cup of organic 1% or carrageenan-free almond milk into a blender with a couple ice cubes, blend and enjoy!

Want to look slim and fit on the beach? Look no further than the ocean—or at least the beachside sushi joint. Pairing a tuna roll or a few pieces of tuna sashimi with ginger, the oft-overlooked pickled spice that comes on your plate, can help your abs shine through. Ginger accelerates gastric emptying, which helps diminish that “food baby” look more rapidly than other foods, and it also blocks several genes and enzymes in the body that promote bloat-causing inflammation. Tuna’s role on this team is important, too; it’s a prime source of docosahexaenoic acid, a type of omega-3 fat that can ward off stress chemicals that promote flab storage and down-regulate fat genes in the stomach, stopping belly fat cells from growing larger.

Shutterstock

All fruits are healthy, but some fight fat better than others. And when you put the best of the best together in one simple fruit salad, you’ve got yourself a solid defense against health-harming flab. Apples are one of the very best sources of fiber in the fruit kingdom—and the nutrient is integral to reducing visceral fat. In fact, a Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center study found that over five years, for every 10-gram increase in soluble fiber eaten per day, visceral fat diminished by 3.7 percent. Watermelon, which is one of our best fruits for fat loss, adds fuel to the waist-whittling fire by improving lipid profiles and lowering fat accumulation. This dynamic duo makes for a delicious, healthy dessert or anytime snack, and is sure to turn your two-pack into a six-pack—stat!

Shutterstock

While eating something that can make your belly bloated may not sound like the best way to lose weight, it’s actually a solid strategy. Eating a calorie-restricted diet that includes two daily servings of protein- and fiber-rich legumes aids weight loss more effectively than a calorie-equivalent diet that doesn’t include beans, a study in Arya Atherosceloris says. Besides tasting delicious, pairing beans with corn can help boost the slimming effects. Corn, like bananas, contains resistant starch, a type of carb that dodges digestion. In turn, the body isn’t able to absorb as many of the corn’s calories or glucose, a nutrient that’s stored as fat if it’s not burned off, aiding weight loss efforts. To reap the benefits, create a tasty corn and bean side dish. Combine salt- and BPA-free cans of corn and beans in a saucepan and warm over medium heat. Season with ground pepper and cilantro. Add the mixture to greens for a waist-trimming salad, use it as a flavorful topper for grilled chicken, or load the mixture into a toasted whole-grain pita pocket for a quick, on-the-go lunch.

Thanks to the popularity of low-carb diets, white potatoes have been unfairly blacklisted. However, a second look at the science reveals that the spuds are actually powerful hunger tamers that can help you lose weight. In fact, Australian researchers found that potatoes are actually more filling than fiber-rich brown rice and oatmeal! The root vegetable is also a good source of bloat-banishing potassium, so they can help you look slimmer almost immediately. But just because potatoes are a go doesn’t mean your favorite high-cal toppings also have the green light. We’re looking at you, bacon bits! Our suggestion: Enjoy half a baked potato with a bit of olive oil and fresh pepper instead. Piperine, the powerful compound that gives black pepper its taste, may interfere with the formation of new fat cells—a reaction known as adipogenesis—which can help trim your waist, zap body fat and lower cholesterol levels. It’s a triple win!

Ditch that layer of cold-weather chub with a slimming bowl of yogurt and berries. Consuming a combination of calcium and vitamin D—what’s typically found in a tub of vitamin D-fortified yogurt—can significantly decrease belly chub and fat absorption in overweight populations, a Nutrition Journal study found. To get similar results at home, start your day with some plain 2% yogurt and top it with fiber-packed raspberries. The fruit is a great source of insoluble fiber that boosts levels of ghrelin—a hormone that controls hunger. Plus, berries are packed with chemicals called polyphenols that aid weight loss and can actually stop fat from forming. Enjoy this tasty duo as a quick breakfast or afternoon snack.

Fish host long chains of omega-3 fatty acids, which help to lower triglycerides and reduce inflammation. They’re also great sources of muscle-building protein, and the more muscle you have on your body, the higher your metabolic rate. Throw garlic into the mix, and you have a lethal weapon for fighting belly fat. According to a study published in the journal Nutrition Research and Practice, women who ingested 80 milligrams of garlic extract a day for 12 weeks lost weight and reduced their BMI significantly.

Turn up the heat on your belly bulge by flavoring your chicken with a dash of cayenne powder. Protein-rich foods like poultry not only boost satiety, but also help people burn fat meals, according to a study by the Journal of the American College of Nutrition. In fact, the macro increased post-meal thermogenesis by 100 percent! If you thought it couldn’t get much better than that, think again! Researchers say that chili pepper can also help blast away stubborn belly fat! If you ask us, there’s no better reason to sprinkle some onto your chicken before it hits the grill.

Who needs Spanx when you can sip on a powerful brew? White tea works in three distinct ways to help strip away fat from your body. A study published in the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism showed that white tea can simultaneously boost lipolysis (the breakdown of fat) and block adipogenesis (the formation of fat cells). The Add some lemon to your tea to boost your Vitamin C intake. Participants boosted fat burning by as much as 30 percent during a workout when they had adequate levels of vitamin C, according to one study. If there’s such a thing as a muffin-top-melting tea, this is it.

In a European Journal of Endocrinology study, researchers discovered that those whose diets were supplemented with insoluble fiber had higher levels of ghrelin, a hormone that controls hunger. And a cup of these little ruby jewels has 8 grams of fiber! Insoluble fiber helps feed the healthy bacteria in your gut, triggering the production of a fatty acid that reduces inflammation throughout your body. Pairing these fat-burning bullets with good polyunsaturated fats, like those found in walnuts, activate genes that reduce fat storage and improve insulin metabolism. At about 13 grams per one-ounce serving, walnuts are one of the best dietary sources of those fats.

Pepita is the Spanish term for pumpkin seed, and if you consider them just jack o’lantern innards, you’re in for a treat. One ounce of seeds has eight grams of protein — more than an egg or almonds — and is rich in flat-belly nutrients like fiber, zinc, and potassium, which are key to muscle building and recovery. Sprinkle them in salads for any extra flat-belly fiber punch.

Shutterstock

When it comes to weight loss, fat burning and fitness fuel, few foods are more powerful than yogurt. Why opt for Greek over regular? For one, Greek yogurt provides up to double the protein of regular yogurt for the same amount of calories, making it more satiating. Sweet potatoes, on the other hand, are the king of slow-digesting carbs, keeping you feeling fuller and energized longer. Among the magic ingredients here are carotenoids, antioxidants which stabilize blood-sugar levels and lower insulin resistance, which prevents calories from being converted into fat. Use a dollop of Greek yogurt in place of sour cream for the combo’s fat-frying effects.

You see it sitting there every time you’re sitting around waiting for a massage. Spa water — a pitcher of ice water with sliced whole lemons, oranges or grapefruit — is a great substitute for sugary beverages. The citrus peels add d-limonene, a powerful antioxidant that stimulates liver enzymes, helping to rid the body of toxins and flush fat from your system.

Dark chocolate is more than a blissful dessert — it’s heavenly for your waistline. A recent study found that the antioxidants in cocoa prevented laboratory mice from gaining excess weight and actually lowered their blood-sugar levels. A separate study at Louisiana State University found that gut microbes in our stomach ferment chocolate into heart-healthy, anti-inflammatory compounds that shut down genes linked to insulin resistance and inflammation. To enhance the effects, try pairing your chocolate (at least 70% cacao) with some apple slices. The fruit speeds up your gut’s fermentation process, leading to an even greater reduction in inflammation and weight.

According to the Nutrition Institute at the University of Tennessee, consuming calcium-rich foods like ricotta can help your body metabolize fat more efficiently. Top it with berries, which contain polyphenols, powerful natural chemicals that can help you lose weight–and even stop fat from forming. In fact, in a recent Texas Woman’s University study, researchers found that feeding mice three daily servings of berries decreased the formation of fat cells by up to 73 percent! Mash 1 cup of berries and let them marinate in their own juices for an hour, then spoon them on top of ricotta for a belly-slimming dessert.

You might not think of these little beige bullets as a superfood, but it’s time to start. High in nutrients and soluble fiber, chickpeas are a prime weight-loss weapon, increasing feelings of satiety by releasing an appetite-suppressing hormone called cholecystokinin. And they blend flawlessly with extra virgin olive oil (hello hummus!), which may increase blood levels of serotonin, a hormone associated with satiety.

Shutterstock

Cucumbers are about 95 percent water. Not only will they hydrate you, but they also boost your weight-loss efforts thanks to their H2O content and low calorie count. One medium-sized cuke contains only about 45 calories, so you can chomp away guilt-free, but alone they can be kind of a bore. For added flavor and fat-frying, try drizzling them with apple cider vinegar, which has been shown to “switch on” genes that release proteins that break down fat. In a study of 175 overweight Japanese men and women, researchers found that participants who drank 1 or 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar daily for 12 weeks significantly lowered their body weight, BMI, visceral fat, and waist circumference.

Hot sauce is rich in capsaicin, a compound that’s proven to suppress appetite and boost thermogenesis—the body’s ability to burn fat as energy. A well-cited study by Canadian researchers found that when men ate appetizers with hot sauce (which has zero calories per teaspoon), they ate about 200 fewer calories at later meals than those that did not. Drizzle this fiery condiment over eggs, and fat will sizzle. Eggs are great sources of the weight loss weapon arginine. Researchers found that administering the amino acid to obese women over 12 weeks resulted in a 7-cm average reduction in waist size and a 6.5-pound average weight loss, according to a recent study published in the Journal of Dietary Supplements.

Yes, you read that right; you have our permission to eat chips—so long as they are the nutrient-packed variety. We like Beanitos Black Bean Chips because they pack in more protein and fiber than a “regular” crisp. To boost the staying power of your snack, pair the sea salt-sprinkled treats with a 100-calorie pack of guac. Avocado—the primary ingredient in guacamole—packs healthy monounsaturated fats that contain oleic acid, which helps quiet feelings of hunger.

Shutterstock

Though this creamy and sweet combination tastes indulgent, nutritionally it’s anything but. The raisins in Ezekiel bread provide natural sweetness, which helps nip sugar craving in the bud, while the vitamin B6 and manganese-rich whole grains help boost your mood, making it ideal for afternoon slump snack attacks. The nut butter contributes hunger-busting healthy fats and a solid hit of waist-whittling meat-free protein. To keep excess pounds at bay, be sure to buy varieties free of health-harming hydrogenated oils and added sugar.

Shutterstock

Unlike the majority of crackers you’ll find in the grocery store, Triscuit’s Baked Whole Grain variety is made with just three ingredients, of which fiber-rich whole-grain wheat is the most abundant. Low-cost, protein-rich tuna makes for a tasty cracker addition and is a solid source of docosahexaenoic acid. This type of omega-3 down-regulates fat genes in the stomach, preventing fat cells from growing larger and keeping you on track toward your trim-down goal.

Shutterstock

In addition to providing healthy fat, fiber, and weight-loss fueling protein to your plate, this savory duo is packed with belly-filling water, vitamin A (which helps the body synthesize protein), and magnesium, a mineral that helps boost lipolysis, a process by which your body releases fat from its stores. If you tend to snack away from home, look for single-serving hummus containers, and throw your veggies into a plastic snack bag to reap the benefits on the go.

Shutterstock

Crunchy, filling (thanks to their high water and fiber content) and packed with nutrients, apples are one of the best weight loss fruits around. Smearing on all-natural peanut butter adds a creamy texture and slow-digesting, heart-healthy monounsaturated fats to the equation, which keeps your belly satiated until your next meal. Bonus: Peanuts are a top source of genistein and resveratrol, two nutrients that help diminish the action of fat-storage genes.
Finding easy ways to burn abdominal fat has been a quest that many of us have been on for many years. From “fat-burning” pills to following complicated diets, the goal to reduce belly fat is one that many people have been trying to accomplish for ages.

Unfortunately, to truly burn abdominal fat, you will have to do a bit more than simply pop a supplement or include one specific food in your diet. Reducing your belly fat involves embracing a healthy lifestyle that includes participating in physical activity, following a healthy diet, and limiting alcohol and added sugars.

Once you get those habits down, you can start making a point to include foods that may help take your abdominal fat-reducing mission to the next level. And one food that may do just that is the juicy and tart-sweet grapefruit.

Read on, and for more on how to eat healthy, don’t miss The #1 Best Juice to Drive Every Day, Says Science.

Grapefruit is the best food to help reduce abdominal fat.

Shutterstock

Made famous by the old-school grapefruit diet, the humble grapefruit has been theorized to be a fat-burning fruit that can help you get a flat tummy simply by including it in your daily life.

While no clinical data confirm that eating grapefruit will literally burn off your belly fat to the point that you will be blessed with a svelte physique within days, some studies show that eating this fruit may naturally support your weight loss goals, and in turn, help reduce your abdominal fat.

Grapefruits are a source of nutrients that help support weight loss, including satiating fiber. And data published in the Journal of Medicinal Food shows that eating half of a fresh grapefruit before meals is linked to significant weight loss.

According to observational data published in Food and Nutrition Research, body weight, waist circumference, and BMI were lower among female grapefruit consumers compared to grapefruit non-consumers.

And when evaluating the effects of eating specific varieties of grapefruit on weight, data from a small study shows that eating one-half of a Rio Red grapefruit before each meal for 6 weeks resulted in a significant reduction in waist circumference.

Can eating grapefruit burn abdominal fat? While animal data suggests that consuming naringenin, a flavonoid present in citrus foods like grapefruit, can reduce fat mass, more clinical trials conducted on humans are needed for us to make that claim with confidence.

The health benefits of grapefruit.

Although more research is needed to confirm the fat loss benefits of grapefruit in your diet, including this juicy fruit in your overall healthy diet may help give your body the boost that it needs to see the results you crave.

This fruit has few calories, is fat-free, and contains no added sugars, making it a fantastic addition to any diet that focuses on burning abdominal fat.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

And since eating grapefruit also fuels your body with good-for-you nutrients like vitamin C, folate, and vitamin A, making a daily habit of eating this fruit comes with little downside.

Just keep in mind that this fruit can interact with certain medications, so you should make sure eating this fruit frequently is ok with your health care provider before you jump on the grapefruit bandwagon.

Takeaway

Whether you are enjoying your grapefruit sliced, diced, or even juiced, know that enjoying this classic citrus fruit may help you reach your weight loss goals in a hydrating, natural, and enjoyable way.

Since losing weight often means reducing visceral fat mass, including grapefruit in your healthy diet may indirectly help your body burn that stubborn belly fat while you are on your weight loss journey.

So, when you are trying to reduce your belly fat, feel free to slice open a fresh grapefruit to accompany your morning breakfast meal— it may just be the missing link your body is needing.

When you think “frozen foods,” you might picture a parade of high-sodium microwaveable meals and calorie-laden desserts—and it’s true that many frozen products are loaded with undesirable ingredients that won’t boost your health, let alone help you lose weight. Used correctly, though, the frozen aisle of the grocery store can be a surprising friend to your weight loss efforts. Plenty of nourishing whole foods like lean meats, fruits, and veggies can be found in frozen form.

Every weight loss journey is different, and there are a thousand foods (yes, even frozen ones!) that can make great choices when you’re trying to shed pounds. But as a nutritionist, if I had to choose just one item to stock the freezer with, I’d go with frozen shelled edamame.

Because the most common pitfall of dieting is usually feeling hungry, it’s critical to find foods that will fill you up without overloading you with calories. Shelled soybeans, sometimes called mukimame, fit the bill for a satiating side dish or snack that won’t leave you peckish an hour later.

A 100-gram portion (which amounts to a generous three-fourths cup) contains just 118 calories. On most weight-loss diets, this won’t take you over your daily calorie target.

Shutterstock

A deeper dive into mukimame’s nutrition reveals that a sizable chunk of their calories come from slow-digesting complex carbohydrates. This type of carbs takes longer for the body to break down, generally keeping you fuller longer. In fact, most of the carbs in shelled edamame come from fiber. Research shows that eating more fiber can not only promote weight loss, but help you stick more closely to your chosen diet.

Mukimame’s weight loss benefits continue with an ample dose of protein. Twelve grams of complete protein lie within each 100-gram serving. In a plant-based side dish or snack, that’s hard to top! And because consuming more protein is known to reduce appetite and increase your body’s metabolism, adding more of it to your weight loss eating plan can yield significant results.

These little green beans are also a goldmine of micronutrients. Each serving is packed with high amounts of folate, vitamin K, potassium, and manganese. While these nutrients may not move the number on the scale, they will help meet your daily vitamin and mineral needs. That’s never a bad thing.

Any brand of shelled edamame can make a pro-weight loss choice, as long as it lists just one ingredient: mukimame—also known as soybeans or shelled edamame. I happen to be a fan of Simple Truth’s Organic Mukimame, which steams directly in the bag. (Yay for convenience!) The fact that they’re organically grown adds to their appeal.

Courtesy of Kroger

Need some inspiration for what to do with a bag o’ beans? For an easy snack or last-minute appetizer, there’s always the option to simply eat mukimame as-is (after cooking, of course!) with a sprinkle of salt. Or pop a handful of beans into a stir fry or DIY poke bowl. Think further outside the box by whipping up an edamame hummus, roasting the beans to crispy perfection, or mashing them into plant-based burgers. With a little experimentation, I think you’ll find these frozen legumes are (literally) the definition of “cool beans.”
